resolutionary. apple unveils the highly anticipated new ipad it is a huge deal, everybody. hello, i'm handily. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we are taking a look at apple's website where you can see the brand new ipad 3. >> this new tablet has all the power of the previous models and much more. nbc's mark barger has a look at the specs. today we are announcing the new ipad, and it is amazing. >> reporter: apple ceo tim cook unveiled the newest incarnation of the company's top-selling tablet this afternoon, simply called the ipad. among the new features, a high-resolution retina displayed screen, like first introduced on the iphone 4 with over 3 million pixels. >> a million more pixels than your hdtv at home. >> reporter: resolution combined with the 4 g connectivity should enhance video streaming possibilities. >> a a lot of people may not have been interested in the idea

of a 3 g ipad but a fast 4 g one with capabilities becomes a lot more compelling, especially for businesses. >> reporter: updated ipad will have a higher resolution camera, capable of hd video and slightly thicker, heavier than its predecessor it will have similar battery life. >> the claim that it is going to get nine hours of battery life on 4 g is eyebrow-raising for a lot of people who know tech because 4 g devices tended to have short battery lives. >> reporter: new ipad will keep as 499 price tag for the wifi model when it hits stores march 15th h the company will sell the ipad 2, cutting the base price to 399. mark barger, nbc news. also today, apple announcing it will let more users store movies on its icloud remote storage service. the ask upgrading its apple tv to play movies in 1080 p. that is the highest resolution for video. a suspicious letter that led to the evacuation of a d.c.

elementary school is being linked to similar letters sent to other places in the city. the letter arrived at the oyster adams bilingual school on 19th street northwest this morning. police were called after someone noticed a suspicious white powder inside. the school was evacuated. the powder was found to be harmless. it is the fourth suspicious letter sent to a d.c. address this week. to the weather, if you like today, folks, you are going to love tomorrow. >> meteorologist veronica johnson has the first forecast from the storm center. veronica. >> that is right. and why so many people are smiling today and suddenly, it's spring. yesterday, the temperature was 49 degrees. today into the 60s, 67 degrees right now with snipe across the area. the only thing about right now is that we have got some wind. it's breezy. it's gusty. that wind out of the southwest at 21 miles per hour. we are getting some current gusts at 33 miles per hour. as far as sky companies go, it's been a day with sunshine. we have got some clouds off to

rain, i will have that with your 7-day forecast. he won by a hair. mitt romney can count ohio in his victory column with a 1% lead over second-place finisher rick santorum. newt gingrich came in third place. ron paul informs last place in the state that is said to count the most on super tuesday. although romney is far ahead in the delegate count, he still can't close the deal with some party skeptics. nbc's steve handlesman has more. >> reporter: mitt romney survived super tuesday, barely winning ohio, after pounding rick santorum with attack ads, but romney put on a bright face today. >> i don't apply sentiment to it, i must admit to last night, i feel pretty darn good. >> reporter: he did win the super tuesday quest for delegates. nbc news projects romney got 219, santorum, 97, newt gingrich, 82, ron paul, 22. so, romney keeps his big lead in total delegates, maybe enough to block his rivals from the

nomination. >> mitt romney did what he had to do he put away six out of the ten states last night. >> reporter: but rick santorum won three states and claims today he is on a roll. >> we are heading for misand m mississippi and alabama and we are going to have a sweep on saturday. >> reporter: backers pressed newt gingrich to quit. he refused. >> we are staying in this race because i believe that it's going to be impossible for a moderate to win the general election. >> reporter: and after winning georgia, gingrich could take more southern primaries next tuesday. romney's so weakened, there's no incentive for gingrich or santorum to quit before the convention says the former republican party chair. >> for romney to actually have the nomination in his pocket going into tampa is going to be virtually impossible to do. >> reporter: math that mitt romney disputes. >> we have the time and the resources and a plan to get all the delegates and we think that

will get done before the convention. >> reporter: he thinks. less certainty after super tuesday. mitt romney says he is certain there won't be a brokered convention, some new candidate swooping in to gram gab the nomination. i'm steve handlesman, news4. meanwhile, in virginia, mitt romney's margin of victory was larger, nearly 20 points. he had 59 1/2% of the votes on the commonwealth's abbreviated ballot. ron paul was the only other candidate on that ballot. he finished with 40.5%. following breaking news in montgomery county a man there has been shot to death. this is happening in the aspen hill area. these are live pictures over at the scene from chopper 4 above superior court. police are still looking for a suspect and a motive. we will bring you more information on this story as soon as we get it. the search is on for a gunman who burst into a home of college students near george mason university in fairfax this

home invasion happened late last night, an off-campus house on car raj park road. news4's melissa mollet has more on what happens next. >> reporter: five george mason students were inside their townhouse late tuesday night. >> and they were chatting, doing homework, playing video games and that sort of thing. >> reporter: when two men came inside to an unlocked back door, arm with handguns they start demanding money and valuables and run through the house gathering items. the victims complied with their demands and then called police who put a chopper in the sky and a k-9 unit on the ground to search for the suspects. they got away with phones and computers, luckily, no one was hurt. >> very scary, we have a nice neighborhood, a lot of families in this tight community. it is a little unnerving. >> reporter: townhouse is a block off braddock road across the street from mason university. gmu student stephanie forest lives down the street. >> i was surprised. it just doesn't really happen around here. it is pretty quiet.

>> reporter: it is a neighborhood filled with students and one police say they would typically consider safe. investigators spent part of the morning taking photos and gathering any potential evidence. >> we usually lock the doors and lock our trucks and cars. we have a few of them. so, i'm not getting paranoid, extra paranoid about t. >> reporter: the victims tell news forth suspects also got away with an ipad, an iphone and an ipod. investigators say anybody with any information in the case is asked to call police n fairfax county, melissa mollet, news4. >> two of the victims are now telling us exactly what happened during that home invasion. erika gonzalez will have their story tonight on news4 at 5:00. d.c.'s fire chief is under fire following revelations from his previous job. kenneth ellerbee was named d.c.'s chief last year after a 16-month stint as fire chief in sarasota, florida. the washington times reports ellerbee's personnel file includes a sexual harassment complaint and the report says

mayor vincent gray never asked for a copy of ellerbee's personnel file before hiring him. using the freedom of information act, "the times" discovered a complaint made against ellerbee by a female employee who accused him of leering at her. the issue came up today during a performance oversight hearing of the d.c. fire department. darcy spencer talked with ellerbee a few minutes ago and we will have a live report coming up on news4 at 5:00. he has hit the road an emotional farewell today for colts quarterback peyton manning. at a giant news conference, the team owner announced he was releasing manning after 14 years in indianapolis. the two men said they had long discussions about moving forward together but in the end, the most logical decision was to part company. >> nobody has had it better than i have playing for the indianapolis colts these 14 years. i can't say how thankful and how fortunate i feel to have played here but, yeah, i still -- i love playing quarterback. >> the 18 jersey will never be

the couple have not yet said went baby is due but in an interview with "elle" simpson announced she is expecting the little girl. the singer to, who has very successful clothing lines, says she fears her daughter will be a tom boy and won't want to go shopping. rush limbaugh is facing more backlash today. the band rush is demanding he stop using their music on his talk show. ♪ according to tmz, the band, are you was furious when they learned the talk show host was playing the spirit of radio. the talk show host has used the music on several occasions, including you the time that he called the george up to law student a slut. the band fired off a letter to rush, ordering him to stop flag on his show. singer peter gabriel was upset when his song "sledgehammer" was used during the program.

small children are coming to the dentist with enormous dental problems. according to "the new york times," dentists are now regularly seeing preschoolers with as many as ten cavities. some toddlers even need root canals. their dental problems are so extensive that general anesthesia is necessary. dentists blame the epidemic on too many sugary drink and snacks. they also say parents are not following guidelines that call for brushing their children's teeth twice a day. many patients complain about having to wait at the doctor's office. these day many doctors have a lot of patients and a lot of red tape to deal with. in get healthy for life, how to make the most of your next office visit. dr. jackie egg larry sabet is here with good advice. the number one complaint is they have to wait. is that because patients are late or because doctors are overbooking? not allowing enough time? >> it is a partnership, like any

dance. everybody's got participate and everybody needs to coop write. so, there's enough blame to go around. part to have is we need patients to understand what they are supposed to do when they come to the doctor's office. how to be prepared. >> let's take a look at some of the things they need to do first of all, you say they should keep the appoint, don't be a no-show. >> right. ? a big problem. some physicians' offices have gone the way of personal trainers and the hair dresser which is if you don't show up, there's a fee. and some have even gone -- some physicians' offices have gone to the part where they will collect a credit card to keep that fee and they will be able to ring that up if you are not there it messes up the whole schedule, trying to fit you in again later, later in the day doesn't work. keep the scheduled time and come on time. if they show up on time, it keeps you on time? >> that's right. >> all right. and don't expect the doctor to handle a bunch of problems in a single visit. why can't i complain about my elbow and my foot? >> someone it gets very confusion and two is are the amount of time you're scheduled for, like when you go for the

hair dresser, scheduled for a haircut and color, not an elbow and foot. you are scheduled one problem at a time and trying to explain varying diseases, in my world, asthma and food allergy in one visit leaves more confused. we can handle it all, but it is going to take a number of visits. you have got to parse it will out. >> one at a time. don't take the family to the office. we have had people take the entire day care to the office it takes a long time to move the whole tribe into the examining room. second, if you are going to take people that matter in the family, if you want a parent there, make sure they are there on time with the rest of the patients. if you need to be there by telephone, make sure you are available by telephone but there's not time after the visit for the doctor to be able to call the other family members and if you have got the whole family with you, you are really not paying attention. i should take my significant other. >> make sure you take that significant other there is not time afterwards for us to be able to stop and call them. >> know your medications? >> yes, come to us with a list, go to the pharmacy, get it all printed out, don't take time, as many patients do, in the visit to stop and have somebody check

medicine cabinet and tell you what the dosages or medications, get the list printed out and bring it to us. >> all that slows you down. don't ask for refills over the phone if you haven't seen the doctor. >> yes, we run into this all the time, especially this time of year, haven't seen parents sometimes for years, sometimes decades and ask us to refill medication it is a liability issue. we really can't refill medications on patients who are not up to date who we really don't know what other medications they are on what happened their problem is. so come in, make that appoint, see the doctor and we are happy to refill your medication if you are a current parent. >> take lab results and x-rays with you. >> so when you go get an x-ray study done, a ct scan or a chest x-ray, ask for a copy film. oftentimes, radiologists will give it to you on a cd and you can bring it. if you are at another physician's office and they have done the blood work, ask them for a copy of that as well. you can bring it to your next doctor who doesn't have to take the time or the expense of having you redo all those tests. >> you say tell your doctor the

truth. your patients lie to you? >> this is the part that takes up the most time. they will come in and say all these medications didn't work, ski them how they are taking them, they say, well, actually, i wasn't really taking them at all. please, tell us that you haven't been taking the medications, tell us that you haven't gotten rid of the cat, tell us whatever it is. we really can't help you if you are not honest with us, it takes too much time, by that time, your time is up. >> truth or consequences. finally, know your insurance and know your other doctors. >> other doctors. it is very important that you know your other doctors because we like to be able to communicate with them and if you just come in and say, i don't know, i saw some nice woman on k street it doesn't really help us. please know their name and particularly their fax number so we can communicate with them. in terms of your insurance, it is the patient's responsibility to know that we do not memorize all the co-pays and all the deductibles and we have no way of keeping track of all that stuff. we are just the middleman. that's for the parent to go to the insurance company for. have that ready before you come. we are able to check you in faster, get you back faster and keep everybody on time. >> all right.

so, really 27. that really is for trees but we are seeing some of the grass pollen come along now and that grass pollen is traveling into our area on some of the air currents because we have got a southerly wind. that's what the folks at walter reed are telling us, but 67 the temperature, winds gusting up to 33 miles per hour. that wind is going to settle down some for the evening hours, but look across the area, 64 in hagerstown, 66, winchester, 70 in cumberland, upper 60s, south fredericksburg to culpepper, nice and mild everywhere across the area that means for your good night forecast, it is going to be a very nice night. 56 by 9:00, 54 at 11 p.m. we will see just a few clouds up until midnight. after midnight, we are going to see more clouds and i think we are going to start the day off tomorrow partly cloudy with a temperature about 45 to 50 degrees. but that, still, folks that is awfully mild. the radar is quiet. your clouds up to the north and west around pittsburgh, we have got some more clouds approaching

west virginia, right through ohio, down from detroit. nashville and charlotte. so, those are the clouds that will be moving in early tomorrow. so, we will start partly sunny. as far as the rain goes, here we are at 6 p.m. tomorrow there is your rain ahead of our next front that cold front should stay out of the area until we get to the late evening hours, a fast-moving front, by the time we get early friday, all that rain is gone and then for friday, the end of the week, it is going to be a little cooler but give back the sunshine and it is going to be a little breezy to windy once again. how we will round out the week, a little bit of wind, mild temperatures, 25056 for your evening with a south wind, for tomorrow morning, southerly wind, 44 to 50 degrees but a great start to the day tomorrow and not a bad finish either for most of your daylight hours. could see a shower possibly again during the evening hours i'm thinking after the sun sets,

welcome back at 4:30, i'm jim handly. i'm pat lawson muse. here is what is happening in the news at this hour. minutes ago, prince georges county council woman karen tolls apologized after being fined on the beltway two weeks ago. she was clocked doing 105 miles per hour, police gave her a warning but later changed that penalty to a $500 fine and six points on her license. the prince georges council took away the county vehicle she is driving. she pledged to take a driver are improvement course. tolls says her lawyer is looking into the fine. one of the most highly anticipated gadgets of 2012. today, apple up veiled its new

ipad. the latest version of its popular device comes with a sharper screen and faster processor. it will cost you the same as previous models, starting at 499. the new ipad goes on sale next friday. a suspicious letter forced students from their classrooms and into the street today. it happened at the adams oyster biling wall school on 19th street northwest. police say they were called after a where a white powder substance arrive ted school this morning. it was found to be harmless powder it is the fourth suspicious letter sent to a d.c. address this week. it was a nail-biter through the night but mitt romney rode to victory in the all-important state of ohio last night in the race for the republican nomination. he beat rick santorum for first place by one percentage point. overall, romney won six super tuesday contests while santorum three. newt gingrich won georgia. prince harry is turning a whole lot of heads while on his ip to jamaica. >> what a time he is having.

the world's largest chocolate bar was taken to a school in los angeles today a company called world's finest chocolate made the 12,190-pound bar. and get this the candy bar is supposed to promote healthy eating. 60 schools are part of the touctour. girl scout cookies are addictive and no one can say no when offered just one. >> sometimes the tasty treats are difficult to get ahold of. nbc's -- nbc 4's wendy rieger is here and she has got an app that will help us find these treats. wendy? >> all you got do is come to our newsroom, there is always a big box of girl scout cookies in our newsroom. seems you walk out in the street and cookies walk up to you, if you are looking for them there
