we begin tonight with two developing stories.

first in maryland, a fire breaks out at a senior living center that happened at the pinewood east. one man is hospitalized with life threatening burns. four firefighters injured when they crashed on their way to the fire. they're all expected to be okay. a race between two cars caused a deadly crash in colesville, maryland. it happened on randolph road this afternoon. the driver of a nissan lost control and flipped on to the sidewalk while trying to change lanes. police believe two cars were racing. one of them may have hit the nissan. melvez garcia died. she was only 31 years old. neither of the cars stopped. the man hunt is over but the investigation is beginning after a deadly shooting. police are not yet saying whether this is a case of gun play ending in tragedy or murder. >> reporter: one young man is dead, another is in police

custody, and a third is mourning the loss of his good friend a a shooting at this house late this afternoon. crime scene investigators work late into the evening gathering evidence from the home. one item recovered, the gun used in the shooting. it was around 3:20 when police were called to this home. they found the victim dead of a gun shot wound. neighbors say another young man who lived at the home emerged saying i didn't do anything. and was led away by police. >> he was crying his eyes out. >> he was upset about what happened? >> he looked destroyed. and then they took him to the police station. >> reporter: police launched an intense man hunt for the third young man, the suspect. dozens of squad cars patrolled the streets. neighbor zach atkins captured this video of police spotted a man in a car fitting the suspect description and surrounded the

vehicle. >> there were about 25, 30 police cars. cops came from everywhere. and pulled all three of them out of the car. two females and a male. >> reporter: while police confirmed they have the man they were seeking in custody, no charges have been filed. >> we're trying to determine just exactly what happened. it's still early. >> reporter: police say both the suspect and the young man who lived at the house are answering questions tonight and cooperating with the investigation. in aspen hill, news 4. a home invasion near george mason university. it happened last night. just a few blocks from the campus. students say two masked men with guns broke into their house and started yelling. one student managed to get into a bathroom where he called the police. while on the phone, he heard the commands. >> on the ground. yeah. or i'm going to blast your head off. it was -- for me it was on the other side of the door.

seeing my best friends on the other side is so hard because i'm the one on the safe side. >> police say the gunmen stole laptops and cell phones. they got in through an unlocked door. police in fairfax county are warning parents about a man exposing himself to kids. thils happened in herndon. he flashed several kids. none of the children were touched. mysterious smell, really funky, on metro this evening. a lot of people complained about it. >> people who ride the metro told us they smelled a foul odor this evening. they started tweeting about it. the last time we heard these reports was early january. there was speculation back then that organic brake pads caused a smell like rotting fish during a stop. there was a similar smell throughout the system. one said quote, why does metro

smell like fish? this woman said i love when the metro smells like rotten fish. it smells like a fish shop/pet store in lefant. >> it has a fishy odor to it. that's the only thing i can describe it as. >> closer we got actually from the fran cone ya location to this location, the smell did increase. >> reporter: a metro employee told me he believes brake pads caused the smell. a spokesperson wouldn't confirm that, but he said he will look into it tomorrow. news 4. getting back to business is the plan for prince george councilwoman. she apologized today. she was clocked going 105 miles an hour on the beltway in a county car two weeks ago. police originally gave her a warning. but earlier this week, slapped her with a $500 fine and six points on her license. very brief news conference today, toles apologized.

>> i offer my utmost apologies to my constituents and colleagues and all county residents. i trust we can now move forward with the very important business of the county. i thank you for your cooperation and support. >> took away the county car that she was driving. says she plans to take a driver improvement class. d.c. mayor vincent gray denies handling cash or money orders when he was running for office. contribution to gray's 2010 campaign are the focus of a federal probe. they're looking into tens of thousands of dollars of unexplained cash or money orders. they want to know if some came from a businessman whose home offices were raided last week. he has not responded to requests for a comment. kenneth ellerby is speaking out about a claim that he

sexually harassed women at his old job. a woman is claiming elerby leered at her. two women accused the chief of looking them up and down and talking to their chests. >> i think what they were referring to was a uniform inspection activity. if you were to find out my name right now, how would you find out my name? >> looking at your tag. >> that's where most people in public safety wear it. i never intended to and never did harass anybody. >> mayor vincent gray told news 4 he was not aware of the complaint but will look into it. there will not be a state fair in virginia this year. the group that run the event filed for bankruptcy today. it will now be up to a court to decide what happens next. the state fair is a 156-year-old tradition in virginia. most recently it was at a park near kings dominion.

in an effort to take a bite out of the high def market, apple introduced the new ipad today. >> reporter: online, apple's referring to the new version as resolutionary for the sharp new screen. this device is impressive. unlike previous versions, the camera on this new ipad can shoot video in hd. apple also claims with a higher resolution monitor, you'll have the best picture on any mobile device that's out there. and that's good news for people who play video games or watch movies. apple says the ipad has 1 million more pixels than an hd tv. battery life is expected to be nine hours. but unlike the first two models, this new one will be 4g capable. meaning it will be able to be used on verizon and at&t's lt e! networks. with all these future.

apple will keep the ipad 2 in production as well. cutting its price by about a hundred dollars. now, you can preorder the new ipad on apple's website and it hits stores next friday. back to you. we are following a developing story involving the sex abuse scandal in the catholic church. tomorrow a coroner will reveal what caused the death of cardinal anthony bevilaqua. he died january 30th after a long bout with dementia and cancer. his death came just one day after a judge ruled that he could testify at the trial of a former aide. that aide is accused of transferring priests suspects of molesting children. the cardinal was 88. toyota tonight is recalling

more than 600,000 cars and trucks. it's the biggest recall that involves the tacoma pickup from 2005 to early 2009 models. a defect may prevent the air bags from deploying in those vehicle. the other recall involves the 2009 camry and the venza models from 2009 to 2011. both cars have a lamp switch problem that could cause electrical malfunctions. toyota will notify owners about what they should do next. a teenager is hospitalized tonight after he got hit by a car outside -- or she got hit outside of a high school. it happened after classes were dismissed. the driver stopped after hearing a thud. when she looked in her rearview mirror, she saw the teenager lying in the road. >> i could not stop the car. even if i had seen him running, like seen him just crossing the street, i would have stopped. >> the driver said the teenager,

a young man, told her that he was okay. a high school valuetorian. she has a near perfect gpa and dreams of being a heart surgeon. she moved to the u.s. when she was four years old. last week as she waited to hear back from colleges, she learned that she had one month to go back to colombia. last night she learned that immigration would be deferring her case for another two years. >> i'd just like to say a couple days ago i thought my whole future was crashing. i worked really hard to be the number one in my school and to help my community and giveback. and i'm grateful that i'm getting something in return. >> an immigration officer says the agency's focus is removing

well, there are wrecks and then there are wrecks. d.c. police trying to find the guys who left this mercedes wrecked on its side. this was after a police chase. the police lost sight after the car then quickly discovered it. after a three car accident outside of providence hospital. the suspects were able to jump out of that wreck and run away. a prominent writer was tortured in china for what he wrote about the government there. now that writer is living in northern virginia. tonight he's talking about the inhumane treatment that forced him out of his country and he's still trying to make an impact. >> reporter: for most, the flag on the front porch flies for

afternoon and before 5:45, all 30,000 slots were sold. the runners will take their marks on sunday, october 28th. >> and it was a good day to start training. >> yeah. for sure. tomorrow another great day to get out there. really when you're training for a marathon, there's no bad day. out there right now, pretty nice. not just pretty nice. it is simply gorgeous. 11:19 at night, it is spectacular outside right now with temperatures still in the 50s in most locations. outside, temperatures today reached a high temperature of 67 degrees after an average high of 53. well above average today. you may have noticed a beautiful full moon tonight. it is really spectacular out there. clouds trying to move in. mostly clear skies, the sun has gone down by now. winds out of the south at 14 miles per hour. current temps still in the 50s everywhere. this is still above average at 11:20 at night for high temperatures.

it's amazing how warm we are right now. and more amazing how warm we're getting during the day tomorrow. you start off this warm, we're warmer tomorrow. nothing to show right now. no rain across the area. i don't expect to see any rain probably until this time tomorrow night. as our frontal boundary moves in. right now just some clouds streaming in ahead of that front. not evident if you step out the door. we did see plenty of sunshine today. nice warm temperatures. but watch what happens tomorrow. here comes our frontal boundary. with high pressure off the coast, we continue to see our winds. maybe even gusting to 40 miles an hour during the day tomorrow. it's going to be a warm afternoon with sunshine early. then the clouds move on in here. the rain will hold off until tomorrow night. then we get a little bit cooler on friday. but we're still above average with temperatures ranging in the mid to upper 50s. that's with plenty of sunshine. let's break down the sunshine for you. here's 11:00 tomorrow morning. no rain to talk about and then watch what happens during the afternoon.

7:00 still no rain out there. we wait until about 11:00 or 12:00 when we start to see the rain moving on in. about 2:30 in the morning, everybody seeing some rain before it quickly moves out of here by 10:00 in the morning. i think we're starting to see sunshine again. nice day even on friday after the front moves through. tomorrow morning, a few clouds. nice and mild and a great start. 44 to 50 degrees to start off our thursday. tomorrow afternoon we'll see partly sunny skies and windy and warm with late showers. once again, i expect most of the day to be on the dry side. high of 70 tomorrow. 59 on friday. saturday and sunday a bit cooler. 50 on saturday then back to 60 on sunday. don't forget to spring forward for late savings time. 67 on tuesday. even warmer on wednesday. >> beautiful. >> not bad at all. >> not bad. coming up, did you see the third quarter tonight? who were those guys? who were they?
