a newborn baby has been found dead in the trunk of a car. chopper 4 is over this road. police are classifying the death as a homicide. they're now interviewing relatives of the person who found that child. >> also tonight another tragic story, a baby died at a day care in virginia. now we've learned that that day care was unlicensed. parents are outraged. they had no idea. other children were inside the day care when the 3-month-old girl stopped breathing. shomari stone reports. >> reporter: people who live in this community are stunned. they look across the street and see a prince william county police cruiser parked in this driveway. inside detectives are talking to people trying to figure out how this three-month-old child died. this woman is concerned after picking up her son at had home day care.

a 3-month-old girl was found unconscious, pronounced dead this afternoon. they questioned employees when they walked two women to a police car. we tried to get answers in this quiet neighborhood. >> i'm shomari stone from news 4. can we ask you some questions about the death of that 3-month-old child? >> reporter: place say the owner operated an unlicensed day care here. at least 12 attended the day care. >> it all seemed legit. >> you get the usual packet saying they're licensed. >> reporter: we're hearing this is an unlicensed day care. did you lead people to believe that it was licensed? police say they plan on releasing more information tomorrow. the medical examiner's office is expected to do an autopsy, which could determine the exact cause of death. shomari stone, news 4.

>> outside tonight they say there's some storms coming our way. isn't that what they say, doug? >> that's what they say. you can see the washington area high and dry. look back to the west through martinsberg and down through winchester. this is a line of showers, no thunder or lightning with this. i wouldn't be surprised to hear a rumble of thunder but no reports of lightning now but we are getting report of very heavy rainfall and very strong winds. we've already seen winds today gusting to 40 miles an hour. this line could bring through 40, maybe 50 mile-an-hour winds as it moved through. just came through martinsberg, charlestown, through frederick and then through our area. this is a very long line, a cold front that will continue to make its way through. i'll show you what it brings behind for the weekend coming up. >> a gun battle broke out inside a hospital on the university of

pittsburgh campus this afternoon. tonight investigators are trying to figure out a motive. a gunman walked into the lobby of the psychiatric hospital there about 2:00 and opened fire. two people died, seven others were hurt. the shooter died after a firefight with police. >> the fbi is trying to figure out who keeps sending letters filled with white powder all over the country. three suspicious letters were found in the district today. one showed up at the epa building on constitution avenue and another in an elementary school in southwest d.c. another was opened by a chef on new york avenue. so far none of the substances has been harmful. >> extra police officers will be at high schools at flowers high school in spring veil, maryland. a student was robbed today. two students used a bee bee gun to hold up a student during gym class.

>> springfield mall was once of crown jewel of shopping in virginia but that mall will be closing for two years, part of a renovation project announced today. it's meant to attract new customers and improve the entire neighborhood. jane wattrell has our report. >> once parked parking garages are now nearly empty. >> i stopped going because of all the violence. >> reporter: over the past decade, the mall developed serious crime problems. one of the most infamous in 2007 when a man was killed in its parking lot by two members of the ms-13 game gang. that's when people started to stay away. >> there was like three different times i was there when someone was shot or stabbed so i wasn't allowed to go there anymore. >> the owner plans to start a transformation to a vibrant town

he was walking his dog when a pickup truck veered off the road. he leaves behind a wife and two sons. he was 65 years old. >> $70,000 worth of shirts ordered for the d.c. hire department are sitting in a warehouse in northeast d.c. they have never been worn and they may not be. the fire chief kenneth ellerbe says he won't distribute those shirt because they have a patch that was used by the previous fire chief. the union that represents d.c. firefighters says the shirts cost taxpayers money and they should be put to use. >> i don't want to waste anything, and i don't want to be responsible for something somebody else ordered that they know we're not going to use either. >> it's been a huge push for fire resistant stationwear and we're not backing off of that. these shirts have been paid for by the taxpayers and they should be in use. >> fire officials say they've received inquiries from the inspector general's office about those shirts and the inspector

general's office did not return our calls today. >> a big victory for virginia teachers tonight, a bill designed to make it easier to fire teachers is now on hold. the state senate voted against the bill which would have phased out tenure in the commonwealth and brought in renewable contracts instead. teachers argued against the bill. >> stop kony. unless you're been living under a rock this week, europe probably aware of the campaign in the media. there are serious questions being raised about the charity behind the film. jim is here with more. >> reporter: in just days it's been viewed almost 50 million times online. but tonight there's a new focus on the group, invisible children, that produced the film. some critics say the group isn't being forthcoming financially. they say while the group has

time of year. temperatures around the region at 68 degrees with winds out of the southwest at 20 miles an hour gusting to near 30. we're going to continue to see the winds right on through the night tonight and probably in through tomorrow morning. 66 in manassis. here's the radar, nothing along the i-95 corridor but back to the west some showers down along blue ridge, winchester, charlestown, this is where we have heavier showers coming through. we could easily see 40 to 50 mile-an-hour winds with this line. right now i don't see any lightning associated with this but we may see cloud-to-cloud lightning in these storms, maybe a rumble of thunder or two but right now nothing hitting the ground. eventually over to shepardtown and down through frederick and just to the north and west of you, you folks in middletown in frederick county. that line continuing to make its way our way.

it's breaking up a little bit as it comes over the mountains. do i expect it to almost reform as it makes its way across toward our area. we will see rain tonight with that frontal boundary, warm air out ahead of it. the front will move through extreme live quickly. by tomorrow afternoon, plenty of sunshine. saturday, however, does look like it's going to be a very cool afternoon but with plenty of sunshine. still not that bad for the beginning of march. heres the future weather forecast showing what's happen being now. watch what happens around 1:30. right around the i-95 corridor, you will most likely hear this out the window as the breezes start to pick up but then by tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m., it's all but out of here and by 9:00 i think everybody's starting to see sunshine. a pretty nice day in store for our friday. clearing skies tomorrow, breezy and cooler. we are going to see cooler air make its way in here behind this front. tomorrow afternoon, 54 to about 60 degrees. those winds still gusting 10 to
