conscious, he was alert and talking to detectives before he was transported from the scene. this investigation is moving into the third hour. detectives are still here on the scene. there's a lot of concern in arlington county tonight because this gunman is still on the loose. you heard a few pops? >> three. >> reporter: a man in his late 20s was shot and wounded here in arlington county just before 8:00 p.m. >> no trouble in the neighborhood until tonight. >> reporter: police say the victim who speaks spanish had just gotten out of his car when the armed suspect approached, said something in english and opened fire. >> suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the abdomen and one to the upper leg/thigh area. that individual was transported and treated on scene. he's at a local hospital right now. >> reporter: police say the gunman ran away toward arlington boulevard. police were can vags the area with a canine trying to track the scent. many neighbors heard the shots.

odyssey right now. it started in the engine. the firefighters got on the ship with hoses and axes. nobody was on board at the time. now to an arrest tonight in connection with with suspicious letters that have shown up at congressional offices across the country. police arrested 39-year-old christopher lee carlson at a home in the portland vancouver area. the letters arrived at the offices of several senators and representatives over the last couple of months. they all contained a nontoxic white substance. these letters are not connected with those that arrived at d.c. schools and restaurants this week. two teachers got into a fight in a montgomery county school today. as jane reports, it happened in front of the kids. >> reporter: it was late morning when the fistfight broke out. officials say it happened in the gym between two male phys ed

teachers. the students were shocked. >> sounds like the teachers were being kids this time. >> reporter: in a letter to parents the principal described the incident as an altercation but a student said the teachers went at it rolling back and forth on the gym floor and at least one had abrasions on his face after it was over. what's your reaction to teachers fighting in front of kids? >> it's definitely concerning. i'd like to find out what's going on and what happened. >> reporter: a school spokesman says after the fistfight the teachers apologized to one another and to the principal, but officials say they'll still investigate the didn't and handle it appropriately. the principal told parents, quote, this incident is completely inappropriate and unacceptable and such behavior lnlt be tolerated. the action of our staff members undermine the core values we must model for our children. there's no word if they've been suspended. according to school officials

there will be an investigation and possibly further consequences. in germantown, jane wattrell, news 4. investigate onnors are awaiting autopsy results on a baby who died at a day care in prince william county, virginia. there are no signs of foul play. police questioned neighbors about what happened at the house yesterday. mirna menendez and yolanda marin face child endangerment charges. they were taking care of nearly two dozen children at the day care, six of whom under the age of one. they were running the day care while the owner was in peru caring for a sick father. >> i was very shocked there were 23 children. i was under the impression there was 12 kids. i would have his birthday parties, invitations would be for 12 kids. >> the family of the baby who died asked for privacy during this difficult time. nearly five years after the mass shooting down at virginia tech, university president
