stabbed in the stomach in the 2400 block of adams morgan. police say a man was stabbed on upshore street, two miles away from the first incident. police have not said if the two cases are connected. i want to bring in chuck bell. we had a couple of days this week that were just gorgeous and then yesterday it all started to fall apart. >> well, but don't worry. that's all i really have to tell you about this weekend. this is the winter we've not had to fear extended periods of cold at all, so a little chill outside to get our weekend morning started and that's the case again tomorrow morning, but oh my goodness is it going to be warm around here again. and i mean soon. outside right now, enjoy all of the daylight early in the day. the last time we get our sun rise this early because, of course, it's daylight saving weekend. tonight when you go to bed, you have to move your clocks ahead one hour. those of us already sleep

the former massachusetts governor captured the caucus in the u.s. territory of guam, securing nine more delegates. 215 registered republicans that participated decided instead of using paper ballots they would vote by a show of hands. there are three more caucuses today. the guam win for romney comes as he prepares for tuesday's primaries in alabama and mississippi. he was in birmingham yesterday, joined by singer randy owe nguyen, front man for alabama. romney stumped for votes, telling the crowd his business experience makes him a better choice to help america's economy than president obama. romney close to tied in alabama. and rick santorum traveled to kansas ahead of that state's caucus and told crowds in topeka and wichita, he is the candidate to trust to square off against the president. santorum slammed romney, saying he reinvests himself for

whatever is convenience and simply can't be trusted. there are 40 delegates available in kansas and a distant second to romney in the delegate count. newt gingrich says he's staying in the race, even if he loses mississippi and alabama. this despite being a distant third in the delegate count. gingrich traveled to all parts of mississippi, stumping for votes, and told reporters he plans to stay in the race, all the way to the republican national convention in august. the former house speaker was pressured to drop out from rick santorum's camp earlier this week, but expects to outlast santorum. redskins fans have wanted a blockbuster move, and the team has answered and could bring the quarterback of the future to washington. the redskins traded up to acquire the second overall pick from the rams. it's expected to be used stud quarterback robert griffin iii to d.c. the heisman trophy winner threw

more than 4,200 yards his junior year at baylor and 37 touchdowns. the move came at a high price. the rams will receive this year's first and second picks from the redskins along with washington's first-round picks in 2013 and 2014. the move is creating major buzz online. it lit up our facebook page overnight. so far, a mix of excitement and skepticism. voss says yes, great choice. they need all of the help and top-notch hungry players they can get. and another says you just traded the next three years' first rounders for a college qb that has done nothing in the nfl? a fan for 50 years, and this could be the last straw. and finally, greg day is willing to give rg3 some time.

krin call condition. a woman who lives in the area spoke to news 4 and says there seems to be more problems popping up in her neighborhood. >> this is a nice neighborhood, nice, quiet neighborhood. here lately with the new neighbors that just moved in, you know, you're starting to have trouble. >> police are not sure if the suspect and victim knew each other. any information? contact the arlington county police department. 703-558-2 703-558-2222. a driver in bad shape after flipping off a d.c. highway overnight. the car flipped over the guard rail and fell 15 to 20 feet into brush below. it appears the car was speeding before it flipped. and it landed on sterling avenue in southeast. the driver taken to the hospital with critical injuries. fire on the southwest waterfront overnight started around 8:30 on board the dinner cruise boat the odyssey. docked at the cantina marina.

the blaze started in the ship's engine and firefighters had to use axes and saws to get to the fire. no one was on board at the time. well, it's the weekend, so you know what that means. there is work on the metro system. four of the system's five lines this weekend are experiencing work and this could keep you from getting to a popular d.c. attraction, woodley park and cleveland park metro stations are closed. you won't be able to access the national zoo. free shuttle buses between dewpoint circle and van ness stations. just like last weekend, trains will be sharing a track on the blue, orange, and yellow lines. all of the work should be finished in time for the monday morning commute. one less hour to ride metro tonight. the system usually is open until 3:00 a.m. on friday and saturday nights, or actually morning and sunday morning, but because of daylight savings clocks spring forward one hour at 2:00

new amateur video out of syria this morning appears to show explosions in the heavily bombarded city of homs. the video cannot be independently verified. tank rounds and mortars hit the city, killing 20 people. one resident said 30 tanks entered one neighborhood and opened fire on houses. another video shows people taking part in a funeral march in damascus. the u.n. estimates syrian forces killed more than 7,500 people since the anti government uprising began a year ago. a state-wide manhunt is

under way in washington state for a man who hurt a judge and sheriff's deputy in a courthouse shooting. michael thomas walked into the gray's harbor courthouse and stabbed the sheriff's deputy. a judge came to her aid but was also stabbed in the neck. the cherve's deputy pulled her gun, but it was wrestle ahead way by thomas who shot her in the shoulder and ran. both the judge and sheriff's deputy have been released from the hospital. there is no metal detector from the courthouse and no security was on duty at the time. 35 years ago, you could virtually walk into any building in the district, unchecked, unchallenged. 35 years ago, we were all much more trusting. but that changed for a lot of people in march of 1977. news 4 pat collins has a look back at the hamafi takeover and the first act of terrorism in washington. >> 35 years ago, i was lying in my own pool of blood, other

presidential race. kansas, u.s. virgin islands and northern mariana islands vote today. they are all trying to get last-minute votes before tuesday's primaries in alabama and mississippi. redskins look to make a blockbuster trade to nab the second pick in the draft. they had to give up three first round picks and a second rounder. they are expected to use that pick to take quarterback robert griffin iii. the state of virginia is expected to begin their defense monday in a lawsuit filed by parents of two students killed in the virginia tech mass shooting. nearly five years later, the university's president says he does not believe he made a mistake that take. president charles steiger said "i tried my best" when he took the stand and defended his actions during the deadliest mass shooting in modern history. also, powerful words from the mother of one of the victims, describing the moment she found out her daughter was among the dead. >> up until that point, i was

really hoping that julie would either be there or be in a hospital. i really thought that. but that worst-case scenario was she was going to be in the hospital. but when i saw leah's face, i knew that wasn't the case. >> the two families who brought the civil suit are each seeking $100,000. are. today, you can see what teachers go through every day after hours. hundreds are expected to gather at potomac mills to gather what's being called a grade-in. teachers will grade papers or work on other projects. it's a chance for people to talk to teachers about the issues they face every day. it's scheduled from 11:00 until 1:30. a shocking incident at montgomery county as two teachers started fighting in front of students. it happened at roberto clemente middle school. two gym teachers started arguing and wrestling on the ground.

one ended up with marks on his face before the two were finally separated. >> sounds like the teachers were being kids this time. it's kind of crazy. >> reporter: what's your reaction to teachers fighting in front of kids, though? >> it's definitely concerning. i'd like to find out what's going on and what happened. >> the school released a statement, saying the teachers apologized to one another. no word if the teachers have been punished for the fight, and school officials say they will investigate the incident. you may not know this, but it is illegal to start your car remotely in maryland. now a state lawmaker wants to change that. delegate barbara frush says maryland law prevents leaving a car intended while the car is running. she says that should not control remotely starting the car. no opposition to the proposal so far. a cash shortage apparently on wall street, but that doesn't mean another economic meltdown on the way.

the occupy wall street movement is running out of money. they said on their website, that they could run out of funding completely in about three weeks. the group started that -- the group that started a worldwide movement against economic inequality say they have about $45,000 left. donations way down. are you not imagining things, folks. prices at the pump going even higher. right now according to aaa, a gallon of gas in the district averages $3.91, 20 cents higher than a month ago. virginia is the cheapest in the area at $3.66. up 19 cents in a month maryland drivers pay an average of $3.44. and out in west virginia, gas is 22 cents higher than a month ago. one gas station in our area is giving everyone a case of sticker shock. check that out an exon station in northwest d.c. is above $5 a

gallon. some drivers say what other choice do you have? >> can't do much about it. they are a little high. i have a flower business. i'm careful, but nothing i can do about it. >> drivers on rock creek do have other options. the sunoco station right across the street offers gas at more than $1 cheaper than that exon station. >> drive into maryland like i do. >> or you live in virginia like i do. well, one teen has tried his best to try and relieve pain at the pump. the 17-year-old senior at georgetown prep in maryland is doing what he calls the one-gallon challenge. created a car that is capable of going more than 200 miles on one gallon of gas. dewey is currently working on getting clearance to actually hit the road with the hybrid electric car, even though he passed maryland's emissions

sophisticated scammers take advantage of consumers every day. but fraudsters are being put behind bars. the department of justice opened up to our liz crenshaw in an exclusive interview. >> we are prosecuting these people and we're prosecuting these scams. >> reporter: tony west, the assistant attorney general for the u.s. civil division. >> not only are we looking at the financial fraud on wall street, we're looking at consumer fraud that affects people on main street. >> reporter: scams are not new, but there are new victims every day. >> these are actual cases that we have on our docket. >> reporter: for instance, americans falling victim to

phantom debt collectors. >> i get the debt collection calls too for things that i never charged, purchases i never made, old debt. the important thing when you get those calls, consumers have to do due diligence. they should ask to make sure that whoever is calling them has proper verification that they are indeed a bona fide debt collector first of all. second of all, they ought to be sure that the debt they owe is really theirs. >> reporter: west says if it's old debt, don't just pay it. the statute of limitations may have expired. another big problem? lottery scams. a notice of some kind that you have won a lottery or sweepstakes. >> fraudsters have gotten clever, disguise what they do to make it look official. this is one my favorite ones. a department of justice press release, so-called press release telling the person that they have won a sweepstakes. won a prize. all they have to do is pay a

certain fee. >> reporter: it's got the federal reserve logo on it, your logo on it, your website on it. >> that's right. >> reporter: no good? >> no good. completely bogus. >> reporter: a valid lottery or sweepstakes doesn't require to you pay any fee to collect winnings. mortgage rescue scams are big this year. scammers preying on some of our country's most vulnerable consumers. >> elderly folks in particular are targets of these schemes where people will sign over the lease to their home, and thinking that they are going to be able to rent their home, stay in their home, and eventually get their home back and what happens, of course, they never get their home back. >> reporter: west warns against paying any upfront fees for loan modification help. another sophisticated scam, business opportunity schemes. a common pitch? >> we will be business partners with you, set you up in the best locations. just give us this investment.

we see a lot of these, unfortunately, and we've been very successful in cracking down on them. but they are still out there. >> reporter: west says cracking down on consumer fraud has led to record-breaking results. in the past year, the consumer protection branch of the justice department recovered nearly a billion dollars. >> people will always find a way in which they will try to take advantage of someone else, and, unfortunately, that's true. and we're going to prosecute those folks when we find them. >> reporter: liz crenshaw, news 4 today. >> assistant attorney general west says if you have been victimized, must report it, go to our website and search top scams. so the guy who famously and incorrectly predicted the end of the world last year, has now admitted he was wrong. harold kemp issued an apology on his website, saying he had no evidence that the world was going to end on may 21 last year. the 90-year-old said is he glad
