tracked those threats back to his computer. pat collins is at the college park tonight with the latest. >> reporter: you know how police say if you see something say something. well, three people saw these threats on the internet, called the cops, case closed in about 12 hours. the target? the grassy mall, a popular student hangout. the center piece of the university of maryland campus. under police guard today. just in case. the threat? posted on the internet. i'll be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30. hopefully i kill enough people to make the national news. the suspect? 19-year-old alexander song, a sophomore arrested by university police sunday morning on campus,

a day before that threatened attack. at the time the chief says the police didn't alert the campus because they knew where song was and they didn't want to tip him off. >> we felt we had the situation contained and the last thing we wanted to do was to alert the entire campus including mr. song that we were looking for him and therefore cause a precipitating event. >> reporter: that threat, front page news here. students here on edge. >> you never think that something like that can happen at your school i guess. but i guess this makes it a little more real. >> this is a little scary. hits close to home. >> reporter: suspect song lived on campus on the third floor of the oakland dormitory. police say they searched his room and found no weapons there. students who know him say this threat is way out of character. >> i think it's just a joke that

went wrong. it was a pretty bad joke. i don't think he actually meant it. >> reporter: alexander song is from fulton, maryland in howard county. he graduated from reservoir high school in 2010. he was in the top 10% of his class, a member of the national honor society. his family lives in this house on brookwood farm road. steve alexander lives across the street. >> bizarre. it's right across the street. how do you -- it's in your neighborhood and strange. >> reporter: tonight song is in the hospital. he's getting psychiatric care. he's been suspended from the university of maryland. he's been charged with interfering with the orderly activities of a campus. that's a misdemeanor. live in college park, i'm pat collins, news 4. >> thanks, pat. a judge denied a motion today to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit brought against virginia tech. 32 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on the blacksburg campus in april of

2007. the families of two victims filed the lawsuit saying university officials botched the response to the shootings. officials say they handled the shooting situation as well as they could have. after a motion to dismiss was denied, they called police and expert witnesses to the stand today to help support their case. a judge in pennsylvania heard pretrial arguments that related to the jerry sandusky case today. the former penn state assistant football coach is charged with sexually abusing under age boys for a period of 15 years. today his lawyers requested more details from the attorney general's investigation. penn state's trustees also issued a report today saying a lack of followup displayed a failure of leadership by joe paterno and they say that is why they fired him. at the d.c. council today the public had a chance to weigh in on a new bill that would broaden requirements on reporting child sexual abuse in the city. a d.c. city council member introduced the bill after the child sexual abuse scandal at

penn state. current law makes it mandatory for professionals like counselors and teachers to report sexual abuse involving a child. the child sexual abuse reporting act of 2012 would require everyone to tell police if they believe a child is being sexually abused. failure to do so could result in a $300 fine or 90 days in jail. me mendelson says the mandatory reporting requirement helps defenseless children. >> requiring reporting begins to put some protection in place for the child who cannot protect himself or herself. >> opponents testified today that the bill does not take attorney-client privilege or spousal privilege into account and it doesn't allow for the fact that most people don't have expertise in recognizing child sex abuse. the bill will go on to the committee on human services for further review. in the republican presidential campaign the candidates will be put to the test again. this time in primaries in alabama and mississippi. and the latest poll suggests both races are awfully tight.

today the candidates were aiming their fire at president obama. here's jay gray. >> reporter: the gop southern swing continues today. looking to energize their campaigns while taking aim at the president newt gingrich and rick santorum addressed the gulf coast energy summit in biloxi this morning. >> we want to make sure we have a candidate go up against president obama who can make the case about energy in our future. who can draw a sharp contrast. >> these people are ideologically committed to fantasy land. if you read the president's energy speeches he is in cloud kukoo land. >> reporter: a new poll does seem to indicate president obama is running out of gas when it comes to the issue of oil. almost two-thirds of americans say they disapprove of the way the prds has handled price increases at the pump and that seems to be fueling a drop in his overall job approval numbers. 46% of those asked give the president a thumbs up for his work in the white house but 50%

a 5-year-old is dead after a violent crash involving a packed school bus just before 8:00 this morning this happened in indianapolis. investigators say the driver of the bus lost control, hit the railroad bridge. he was also killed. police say there were a total of 50 kids on the bus. ten of them were taken to the hospital. two with critical injuries. one child was pulled from underneath the front wheel of the bus. united nations peace envoy kofi annan is urging the world to send a message to dplas cuss to stop killing syrian citizens. he left syria yesterday without a deal to end the year-long conflict. today at the u.n. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton said even as president assad was meeting with annan the syrian army was mounting new assaults on civilians. the u.n. security council is now meeting to decide how to address the crisis. russia has already vetoed two u.n. resolutions that condemn

assad's crackdown. a california utility company will pay $70 million in restitution in connection with a deadly pipeline explosion in the san francisco suburb. pacific gas and electric announced the settlement today. pg&e says the money will be used to help establish a nonprofit group to help the community recover. the explosion in 2010 killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. the money is in addition to money pg&e already promised to repair the city's infrastructure and to help rebuild the neighborhood. there may be a delay in the criminal case linked to the worst mine disaster in recent history. the explosion at the upper big branch mine in west virginia killed 29 men on april 5th of 2010. federal investigators later determined that flagrant safety violations contributed to the explosion. the former superintendent of the mine is charged with conspiracy, disabling a methane gas monitor, falsifying safety records and other crimes. he was supposed to enter a plea

9:00 in most areas. i think we'll start to run in through some showers out there. high temperature today? it was actually 72. that was the high temperature for today. the average high is 54. this is right though. you think 72 could be a record with 20 degrees above average. no. the record 89 set back in 1990. that was also the earliest the cherry blossoms have ever come out. 1990. this year they'll come out a little early too. 69 degrees the temperature right now with winds out of the south about 8 miles per hour. current temperatures 64 in winchester, 64 west virginia. 71 in charlottesville. 74 in fredericksburg and a cooler 60 degrees down toward pax river as we are looking at a little bit in the way of water influence. talk about the tree pollen today. it's on the moderate side and is going to stay that way through the week this week. a lot of people on my facebook and twitter page asking about the pollen. that's what we're going to have. we'll be a little lower tomorrow especially if we get some showers.

you can see some of the showers making their way through winchester back down through the shenandoah valley continuing to move toward the east. we have a chance for some of those showers overnight tonight and in through tomorrow morning. this is all part of a bigger system here that's swinging on through the eastern parts of the country. we'll wait and see this area here to make its way through overnight. i do expect to see some showers by early tomorrow morning. and then look back here. this is some severe weather toward parts of michigan. numerous tornado warnings now in effect. tornado warnings, potential tornadoes on the ground up here toward michigan so a very stormy day there. for us, yes we have a chance for some thunderstorms during the day tomorrow. but i do not expect anything severe here. warm temperatures out ahead of the frontal boundary and here the showers. the showers move through overnight tonight and along the front tomorrow afternoon the same front that's coming through michigan right now, the same front will bring us that chance of isolated thunderstorms once again most of us will not see those thunderstorms. and if we do it'll be a quick shower with maybe a couple rumbles. thunder. that's about it. on wednesday, it's just warm out there with plenty of sunshine.

washington state in early december. the afghan army has stepped up street patrols to prevent an violent retaliation. a university of maryland honor student is psychologically evaluated after his arrest for threatening to carry out an attack on campus this weekend. police say 19-year-old alexander song made internet threats to carry out a shooting rampage. he was arrested yesterday and police say he was not armed. >> reporter: republican candidate mitt romney is celebrating his 65th birthday on the campaign trail today. alabama and mississippi hold their primaries tomorrow. the latest polls suggest both races are too close to call. there will nobody jail time for a prince william county mother initially charged with murder for leaving her toddler in a hot van last summer where the child died. as julie carey reports now the commonwealth attorney agreed to a plea that will allow dr. karen murphy a veterinarian to do community service. >> reporter: relatives shielded

a distraught karen murphy as she left the courthouse after her tearful guilty plea to two counts of misdemeanor child neglect. >> dr. murphy accepted responsibility for her actions. the commonwealth accepted the plea deal entered today. it was a fair resolution of the case. >> reporter: the commonwealth attorney originally charged her with felony murder after her 2-year-old son was found dead in the family van last june. prosecutors say murphy had driven to work at an animal hospital with the toddler strapped into his car seat and didn't discover ryan until she came home later that afternoon. he died in the hot van. it was the second time murphy had forgotten to drop her son off at daycare. >> justice won't be served by making her go to penitentiary. if she is convicted after felony she'll lose her license to practice veterinary medicine and third i don't think it is possible to punish her more than she has been. >> reporter: under the plea

she'll performed 400 hours of community service at the local animal shelter and she'll also lend her voice to a national group called kids in cars.org which aims to raise public awareness about dangers facing busy commuting parents. its vice president spoke with news 4 via skype. >> the karen murphy case has gotten a lot of media attention because she's got such tremendous support from the community. it speaks to the fact this could happen to any parent. it doesn't discriminate to so-called good and bad parents. >> reporter: many supporters have signed online petitions backing federal legislation that would require vehicle manufacturers to install seat belt alarms in the back seat of cars. as the nasa youtube video shows the alarms could trigger an alert on a key fob if the child were left behind. the kids in cars campaign also urges parents to put something of value like a purse or brief case in the back seat with the child. parents are also urged to ask their daycare provider to contact them if their child is

more than 15 minutes late. in manassas, julie carey, news 4. as part of dr. murphy's plea the judge suspended a two-year prison term. she will be on probation for six years. d.c. police are still looking for a man and woman seen leaving the columbia heights ihop after a shooting sunday morning. two men were arguing about a woman when one pulled a gun and shot the other in the chest. this was at the ihop on irving and 14th streets in northwest. the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. the restaurant was briefly closed while police interviewed witnesses. it opened three hours after the shooting. police are trying to figure out who stole an expensive family heirloom in annapolis. the 24 carat gold championship boxing belt disappeared last thursday. the home owners in the 100 block of winchester road say they notice today and other items were gone when they got home. this particular belt is from the british empire lonsdale. investigators say an older, faded red vehicle was in the area the day it disappeared. anybody who might have seen

something should call police. authorities in anne arundel county are looking for an under ground dog fighting ring. in the last month two so-called bait dogs have been found in the county severely wounded and suffering. darcy spencer talked to the man who found one of the injured dogs. >> her name is princess and she is recovering at the animal hospital in anne arundel county from life threatening bite wounds. >> she is a love bug. just loves to sit on your lap and cuddle. >> reporter: authorities believe the pit bull was a bait dog in a dog fighting operation. >> it's sad someone would use these poor dogs as, you know, fighting dogs because they are so sweet and so trusting. >> princess was found wandering in a parking lot on richie highway in brooklyn park nine days ago. one of her wounds was so severe it left a gaping hole under her arm that got infected. >> she would have died from it had she not received this care. oh, yes. very much so. >> probably a matter of days? >> yes. >> reporter: this is steven williams. he was the person who found princess. tell us what kind of condition

she was in when you found her. >> she was just, you know, she walked across richie highway like she didn't know a car would hurt her. >> reporter: williams says he spotted princess right here in this parking lot. he called her over and she came straight to him. he quickly realized that she was in very bad shape. >> you see the marks on her from where she had been bitten by other dogs from her tail to her nose. she was full of them. >> reporter: this is rocky road. he is also being treated and is also believed to be a bait dog. he was found within a few miles of where princess was found a month ago. he has bite marks on his face and here on his leg is what doctors believe was a knife wound. >> i just hope they find whoever did this to them and, you know, that they'll be tortured as much as these guys were. >> reporter: county animal control officers say princess and rocky road were likely used for training other more aggressive dogs. they're asking the community to help find those involved. >> watching for lots of dominant

breed animals in one area, lots of people traffic in and out of an area or any other injured dog. >> reporter: why do you think no one is reporting these dog fights? >> because they're scared more than anything else. they don't want the people engaged in it to know who they are. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. and the dogs will be placed with rescue groups and the vets are confident that both will find permanent homes. the catholic priest who recently denied communion to a lesbian at her mother's funeral has been suspended. the archdiocese of washington placed father marcelle on leave last friday for intimidating behavior toward parish staff and others. he serves at st. john newman catholic church in gaithersburg. artist barbara johnson says the priest denied her communion at the funeral because she was living with another woman. the archdiocese says the suspension is not related to the communion incident of last month. the archdiocese apologized for what happened in that instance. maryland lawmakers are discussing a partial ban on

smoking in cars. today the debate resumed on a bill that would allow outlaw smoking when there are passengers in the car who are under the age of 8. supporters say second-hand smoke is harmful to children. they amended the measure last friday which would have included passengers under the age of 16. lawmakers changed the age to make it easier to enforce since kids under 18 have -- under 8 rather have to ride in car seats. she is a woman who works wonders with buildings. linda rabbit was the first woman in the washington area to start a construction company. rand construction is now one of the largest in the country founded by a woman. pat lawson muse has her story. three this is the hangar at general dynamics. >> reporter: linda rabbit is founder and ceo of rand construction, the area's fifth largest commercial interior construction company founded and owned by a woman. >> we were in fact the first woman owned general contractor and i learned it as i did it.

a rhode island couple say they can't believe their family was kicked off a flight last month because of their toddler's behavior. the family was boarding a jet blue flight from turks and caicos to the united states when their 2-year-old natalie had a meltdown. her parents say they eventually got her under control but the flight attendant told them they had to get off the plane for safety reasons. the husband and wife both doctors and their two girls spoke to matt lauer on the "today" show this morning. >> i guess the part that i don't understand when i look at it is we had her under control. so i have her seated. i can't, i've been on the flight with my children 14 times before and it was never an issue. i can't say what will happen in the future. but i have her under control so if that was the issue why kick

hello everybody. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer. right here at nbc 4. outside right now take a look at the kennedy center. a pretty nice day. 69 degrees. winds out of the south at 8 miles per hour. it is simply gorgeous across the area and it's going to be a very nice evening all around the region. 71 the high temperature today in washington. 73 in richmond. 68 in hagerstown. but still a cool 57 toward ocean city. with that cool water over the atlantic ocean still giving them a cooler temperature. storm 4 radar showing the rain trying to make its way into the region. already seeing some of that rain now making its way across the region but again very, very light rain.

that's what we expect right on through the night tonight. a few more showers back here to the west. we are going to see those move through overnight and probably right in through early tomorrow morning. let's break it down for you. 6:30, this is where the rain is just off to the west and then overnight tonight it'll reform around our region maybe around 5:00 in the morning so if you're getting up and leaving fairly early you may run into fairly wet roadways out there especially from i-95 down to the south and east where i think we have the best chance of seeing that rain. but by noon, it's out of here. a great day for lunch tomorrow with plenty of sunshine and then tomorrow afternoon along that frontal boundary we see those showers and storms developing. we could see a couple thunderstorms. nothing strong. don't worry about any severe weather. but a couple rumbles of thunder with this little batch as it makes its way down to the south and east too. temperatures overnight tonight 49 in leesburg. 54 in washington. 52 in fredericksburg so a very mild night. tomorrow afternoon, 77 in washington. 80 in fredericksburg. 76 in frederick. guys, i'm not feeling so good. >> yeah.

we're not buying that thanks, doug. i got our tee time ready. we're good. early. don't tell. >> you've got it too huh? >> yeah. it just comes and goes. >> yeah. redski redskins? >> this really came out of nowhere. >> yes it did. >> everybody was so excited over the weekend with the big news and the feelings around town after the redskins traded up with the rams to draft robert griffin iii. washed away amid reports td organization will lose $36 million in caps base for front loading contracts during the uncapped year. this will seriously hinder the redskins' efforts to sign free agents when the market opens tomorrow. albert haynesworth, the gift that keeps on giving. since his contract was the primary target of the nfl's wrath. the penalties can be divided over two seasons. so the redskins, who had between 30 and 40 million in caps space to chase free agents will now

have 18 million less if they divide that $36 million penalty in half. the league reportedly more warned teams at least six times there would be serious consequences if a team used the uncapped year to dump salaries by front loading contracts. apparently there was an invisible cap during the so-called uncapped year. so with free agencies starting tomorrow the redskins have released two players to free up additional cap space. the first major free agent signing for the redskins last season, expected to team with landry to form a devastating tandem at safety. but both battled injuries most of the season and atagwe only started eight games sitting out even when healthy. sellers was the longest tenured redskin and a former pro bowler. he lost his starting job at fullback to durill young last season. tourney time has arrived. virginia is at tenth seed with a tough first round game against

florida. georgetown is a three seed and they should have an easy time with 14th seeded belmont but the hoyas have struggled lately in the tournament getting bounced out of the first round the last two years in a row. this year the hoyas, well it should be easy but this is a tough draw with belmont. the bruins are the fourth highest scoring team in the country averaging 81 points per game. and many of the so-called experts picking belmont to win. georgetown's recent history says they're ripe for an upset and the hoyas still have that in the back of their heads. >> yeah. definitely. anybody says it doesn't is, you know, i think they're lying. you know, we know that in the past couple seasons it's been a disappointment in terms of fans and even for our team especially. and we keep that in mind. we're going to do everything in our power, us and all the coaches, to win that game. >> i think individually everybody can do their part. you know, do what you do and do it well. play as hard as you can. you know, leave everything on the court because it's all or

experiencing discomfort in his left achilles. another injury setback for the former world number one yesterday at durill a second shot on the tenth. watch tiger here after he hits the shot. grimaces a little bit. starpts to limp. the ball goes in the water. it's not good. take another look. tiger just kind of favoring that left leg. he will withdraw from the tournament after hitting his drive on the 12th hole but tiger could be out for a while. this is the same achilles tendon that kept him out for a significant amount of time. he is trying to come back of course and win his first pga tour event in quite sometime. he continues to be the biggest draw in professional golf. in spring training the nationals defeated the cardinals 8-4. bryce harper not in the starting lineup for a fifth day in a row because of a tight left calf. the manager davie johnson saw harp inner the trainers room this morning and said hey bud whai's up? johnson apparently nursing a

of its preorder inventory in some countries like france, japan, and the uk. the delay is two to three weeks. at&t and verizon say they'll notify customers by e-mail when the ipad is available. nearly 30 years since the shuttle challenger disaster we are getting a never before seen perspective. jeffrey alt attended the liftoff january, 1986. the film -- he filmed the flight on his super 8 camera. recently he remembered he had that film in storage and had it digitalized. alt says while the pictures depict the horrifying experience, being there was even more difficult to see. >> and then just as the seconds went on and you realized these two trails were going off and you saw this, the debris falling, you just knew something was wrong. everybody was just grasping for some sort of hope.

deal. don't expect everybody to see this. but temperatures, look at that. 75 to 80 degrees as you make your way out and about tomorrow and then look at this as i mentioned. simply gorgeous. 72 on your wednesday. 73 on thursday. and let's just keep it in the 70s all the way through saturday. just a couple chances for rain. >> okay. >> sounds good. >> like san diego. >> yes, true. anna thomasan lives in norway. over the weekend a rock crashed right through her roof. first she thought vandals caused the damage then looked more closely at the rock. it weighs about a pound. she called in experts. they say it was meteorite and the rock was probably formed when two asteroids collided in space. an expert says this rock marks the second meteor to hit norway in six years. that's very unusual he says. anna thomason says she'll turn it over so scientists can study it but not quite yet. she wants to keep it around for a little while just to look at. that as whole lot more
