this trip. police believe her ex-husband was preparing to kill her, and she was afraid of him. the fatal shooting happened just after 9:30 this morning. a surveillance camera caught video of the minivan driving south at connecticut stopping at a red light at knoells. a body being pushed out, witnesses say they heard a pop, it turned out to be a gunshot. they ran to help the victim in the roadway. >> the people from urgent care, the nurse and doctor came out there, and performed cpr. and then -- she didn't make it. >> according to witnesses it appeared there was some commotion in the vehicle. one witness described seeing the woman trying to get out of the van.

the man pulling her back, shooting her, and then pushing her out into the roadway. at that time according to witnesses, the van took off. >> the suspect apparently ditched the van at a service station on park lawn and disposed of its license plates. the owner of the station says he spoke to gilberti. >> he was sitting there in the chair like he usually sits. i said, they had a real rush -- somebody killed a lady. and he was real nervous, and he said, tom, give me a ride. got to give me a ride. i was like, phil, what's wrong? my mechanic says, i think he's the one that killed -- i said, no. >> did you give him a ride? >> no. >> reporter: this bouquet of flowers was put by the scene of the shooting as a memorial to the victim. this cell phone videotape by a man on the scene just seconds after the shooting shows people administering cpr to the victim. the person who took the video helped police translating from

spanish to english the account of an iwitness to the shooting. >> a lady was trying to come out of the car. get a rifle or a shotgun. and shoot the back her head. he was trying to load again and he took off. >> the fella from the service station who says he talked to gilberti after the fatal shooting says he believes gilberti left on foot and may have been heading to metro. that's the latest from kensington, chris gordon, news 4. >> thank you. pat collins is in rockville where police have set up a command post. >> this is the command post for the intense manhunt. the suspect they're looking for is an ex-boxer. he has a scorpion tattooed on his neck. he's on foot, he has weapons. he was last scene right here in rockville.

the murder suspect 51 years old, 6'0", 250 pounds. last seen wearing a red shirt, dark jeans, carrying a dark duffleb dufflebag. he's armed and dangerous. the victim was his ex-wife. she had a stayaway order against him. according to court documents, gilberti told her, i catch you with another man, i will kill you both. and if you call police on me, i better be locked up for a long time because i'll be coming back for you p.m. the manhunt for the murder suspect first led police to this aspen hill neighborhood. streets closed off. neighbors warned. the s.w.a.t. team deployed. they say suspect phillip gilberti has friends here that he might have reason to be here. ray broomall lives nearby.

he saw police make their move. >> lots of cops? >> yes. >> big guns? >> of course. >> what do you make of of this? >> it's crazy, man. >> for hours, police surrounded the place, when they got inside, no sign of the suspect. neighbor broomall knows gilberti, he described him this way. >> phil's crazy, man, he's real crazy. i wouldn't mess with him, come across his path at all. >> reporter: about a half block away, police locate a pickup truck with arizona plates. linked to the suspect. they search the truck, they tow the truck, still no sign of the man they're looking for. then this afternoon in rockville, they located the van, the van that was used in the kensington murder. that caused police to intensify their search here. they set up a command center, they have the s.w.a.t. team at the ready, a helicopter on high. they're using every available resource. >> now, over the weekend, gilberti was arrested for violating that protective order.

he was brought to court on monday. the prosecutor wanted him held but the judge released him on a $50,000 bond. that was yesterday. today that murder in kensington. live in rockville, pat collins, news 4. >> pat, thank you. we're following a developing story out of fairfax county. two lanes of the dulles toll road are shut down by a construction truck accident. these are pictures from chopper 4 a short time ago. a boom truck fell into the eastbound lanes between mcgarretty road and idle woodbridges. there were no injuries. this is expected to affect traffic until at least 7:00 this evening. president obama says the u.s. will spare no effort -- a u.s. army sergeant is in custody

accused of those murders. a court-martial may take place in afghanistan. president obama says he told the afghan president the u.s. takes this case as seriously as if the victims were our own citizens and our own children. >> we're heart broken over the loss of innocent life. the killing of innocent civilians is outrageous and unacceptable. it's not who we are as a country. and it does not represent our military. >> president obama said he wants to ensure the american people and the afghan people that anyone involved in the case will be held fully accountable with the full force of the law. a flurry subpoenas issued today. news 4 has learned the new subpoenas volled cash and contributions controlled by jeff thompson.

tom sherwood broke this story today and joins us with the latest. >> these are grand jury subpoenas. they want information they want information going back ten year s. the subpoenas just web with the out today. several councilmembers confirmed they have received the grand jury is a peen 2345s but declined further comment. others said they have not yet received the mailed subpoenas, but have heard about them. >> vincent gray's 2010 campaign for may, already is the focus of a federal probe looking into a possible shadow campaign involving cash and unreported expenses. as well as donations from jeff thompson. council chairman kwame brown's 2008 campaign is also under federal probe.

a spokesman for the u.s. attorneys office declined comment. businessman jeff thompson who has obtained counsel i8 but declined comment issed focus of a wide ranging probe into his massive giving campaigns. a copy of the subpoena shows a broad based search for documents referring or relating to thompson. his business partners and firms he controls. thompson holds the city's medicaid contract worth more than $300 million a year and has a prominent accounting firm. he's been a major political fund raiser for local and national elections. the subpoena asks for any documents detailing fund-raising pledges. other campaign commitments, meetings, excessive go nations even if returned. and copies of invitations and rsvp's to thompson events. >> those subpoenas are looking at political activity going back nearly 10 years, doreen? >> tom sherwood reporting, thank

you, tom. jpmorgan chase became the first bank to reduce their dividends. the dow jones industrials closed above 13,000. the nasdaq finished above 3 thourgs, the first time both have reached that level at the same time. a judge in pennsylvania denied a request by jerry sandusky in the penn state child sex abuse case. the former assistant football coach is charged with sexually abusing ten boys over a 15-year span. yesterday his lawyer requested more details about the alleged crimes, including where and when they took place. prosecutors say they cannot provide those details. sandusky's lawyers say he will file a motion to dismiss all charges for a lack of specificity. another beautiful day outside today. >> this was hard to top any time of the year, but especially in early march. doug? >> and normally, in march we talk about a weather pattern like this, we say, dopt get used

captured another town held by rebels in syria. rebels have lost control of a city near the turkish border. it was once a major base for the oppositi opposition. we have just gotten individual yost fighting over there. one consequence shows rebels setting up an improvised explosive device in a road in the hopes of bombing an army tank. 9 rebels are shown grieving after several of their friends were killed. some tense moments between diplomats from north and south korea. yesterday about 4 south korean lawmakers tried to grab a north korean diplomat as they were wleeving the meeting. the incident comes amid reports that china is repatriating dozens of north koreans to their communist homeland rather than allowing them to defect to south korea. david cameron is here in the states for a three-day visit with president obama. hoops and diplomacy on the agenda.

shortly after he arrived in washington this afternoon. he and the president flew to dayton ohio so they could watch a first round game in the ncaa men's basketball tourney. tomorrow the leaders will hold a joint press conference at the white house. growing tensions in syria and afghanistan expected to be among the topics. cameron will be honored with a state dinner tomorrow night. >> he flies over from london and goes to ohio? >> that's one of the games tonight. i forgot those are on tonight. i'm excited. >> you don't want to stay in and watch basketball on a night like this, do you? >> nos you put a tv outside, you go to one of those places -- a lot of the restaurants they are all out now. they put their furniture outside. tonight a great night to eat outside. >> absolutely. look at this, windy, tulip magnolias. >> i said tulip trees. >> the two of us together.

there. 80 right now in fredericksburg. 79 in washington, 79 in baltimore. 79 in gaithers berg. high temperatures around the region extremely warm. 76 in philly, 73 in new york today. 78 in roanoke. we're not the only ones dealing with with the warm air. it's about the eastern two thirds of the country. a couple showers in around falkeer county. here's one coming in around annan dale right now. here it is along 236. little river turnpike as it makes its way down to the south and east. you're going to see that coming through 395. another one just to the south of waldorf. here's 301. watch out, just a quick shower. we did have a couple rumbles of thunder earlier, as these are all making their way offshore. you can see the frontal boundary that helped create the showers

and the thunderstorm. here's the front, it's not going to do a lot for us. tomorrow's weather will be similar to today. maybe a degree or two cooler. that's going to be about it. plenty of sunshine, nice and warm tomorrow. we're going to see a repeat of this again on thursday before our next frontal boundary moves in. that one coming through on friday, with a better chance showers and thunderstorms on friday. once again not a wash out, we're talking about springtime thunderstorms, or even more like summertime, where they develop one after the other, most of us remain on the dry side. i think that's what you can expect over the next couple days. breezy and mild this evening, 65 to 74 degrees. tomorrow morning, mostly clear and nice. 47 to 55. tomorrow afternoon, how about this, i mean, just fantastic, sunny and warm again, nice and pleasant. 73 to about 80 degrees, as we look over toward the next four days, nice through the weekend. another chance of a shower on saturday. high temperature around 75, i think we stay at 0 or better

an extensive police search underway in montgomery county for a man suspected in a deadly shooting this morning in kensington. the suspect 51-year-old phillip gilberti. the victim is his ex-wife who had a stayaway order against him. he may be armed and police consider him dangerous. federal prosecutors this week are sending out a flurry of subpoenas in the city's ongoing scandal against campaign

corruption. republicans are casting their votes in presidential primaries in the south. analysts say if mitt romney wins alabama and mississippi tonight, it could be curtains for his opponents in the gop campaign. a man sentenced to 25 years in prison today for setting a series of fires in our area. one of those blazes seriously injured d.c. firefighters. darcie spencer has more on the motive for that arson spree. >> reporter: was it good being there and being able to state how this impacted you? >> absolutely. >> reporter: robert alvarado gave a victim pact statement in court as the man who set the fire that injured him was sentenced for his arson spree. >> this is something that's going to affect all of us for the rest of our lives. never going to forget it. >> reporter: the fire in northeast washington last april flashed over, the roof collapsed, trapping and injuring several d.c. firefighters. >> truly, i thought i was going

to die. >> reporter: maurice dues admitted to setting at least eight fires over the span of three and a half years. he was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. in court, he said, i take full responsibility for it, i'm trying to get myself together to get the help i need so i can come back. prosecutors say he set the fire so he could be part of a rescue mission. on some fire scenes he took action to help people escape harm after setting the blaze. is prosecutors say as the flames were burning here at the house on 48th place. dues called 911, he ran over here next door, banged on the door and warned residents to get out because the flames were spreading. here's reaction from the neighborhood. >> i'm glad that they caught the culprit and now we can rest assured and sleep peacefully. >> did it shake everybody up knowing an arsonist was out

there doing this? >> yes. like we say, glad they got him. >> chuck ryan was the most critically injured in the northeast blaze. he returned to the job seven months after the fire. both firefighters say it hasn't taken away their desire to serve. >> something we love to do, and would never walk away from it. >> i still love my job, it's the greatest job on earth. >> all of those firefighters have returned to duty. we hear none of them even considered leaving the fire service. a 5-month-old baby is back with his parents tonight after a man carjacked the suv with the child inside. it all started before 8:00 this morning at a home on the 3800 block suitland road in southeast. police say the parents of a 5-month-old boy were trying to strap the child into his car seat when a man jumped inside their suv and took off. after a search of the neighborhood police found the abandoned car a mile away from the house. the baby was inside and he was

not hurt. >> it's the most frightening thing i ever experiences. probably not compared to what my sister and brother-in-law have experienced. we bless god for the safe return of the baby. >> police dogs are now searching for the suspect. again, no arrests so far. encouraging news for area job seekers. the unemployment rate in the region continues to fall. it's at the lowest rate in three years, julie carrie has more on what's driving job growth in the commonwealth. christopher myers has been in his new job for just two days. he wasn't hired off the unemployment roles, his specialty is in demand. he does represent the kind of job growth that's given virginia it's lowest unemployment rate in three years. >> in our field, virginia's the place to go, because of the technology sector. >> for microtech, being close to federal government business helps too. tony himmenpshe started his tech

company and picked fairfax county over some other locations. the number of employees has nearly doubled to about 450. still, jimenez gives the governor some of the credit for the recent growth. >> i think the things that he's doing make all the sense in the world, and i love the fact that i live in a state, and i have a company in the state that people know is open for business. >> a recent analysis by george mason university shows that the recent job growth in northernp virginia really got started back in the spring of 2010 and continued through 2011. this ceo has been adding jobs at humantouch. since 2008 he's tripled his number of employees. >> i think there's a lot of energy here. especially in the fairfax county area. you want to talk about energy, all you have to do is look outside my windows, you'll see anything from construction to the mall to all the i.t. places here. >> reporter: as they look ahead, northern virginia government

contractors are bracing for the coming defense department cuts. but micro tech's founder plans to constantly adapt and train. >> looking for ways to taking the jobs that aren't necessarily going to be there in a year or two years and figure out where we can repurpose our folks. what kind of additional training, and more importantly, the innovation types of things that we need to do to ensure that the jobs are created. julie carrie, news 4. the department of labor says unemployment rates fell in 45 states and the district in virginia, it's 5.8%. in maryland it's 6.5%. in the district it's 9.9%. the national unemployment raten sads at 8.3%. jury deliberations may begin tomorrow in the wrongful death case brought against virginia tech. 32 people were killed in that april 2007 shooting. the families of two of those victims claim their children may have survived. if the school had notified the students earlier. they say they want officials to

be held accountable. the everyone t the integrity of charles staiger was facing questioning as the state sought to establish that he did not cover up mistakes. two years after arlington county first deployed red light cameras, police want to add more. the county will add eight new cameras to six different intersections throughout the county. violators will get a $50 ticket but not have any points added to their license. police say it's all about safety. >> they're very proactive. we're recognized nationally for efforts in this area, this is another tool for us to enhance our program. >> when the new cameras are deployed, arlington will have cameras up at ten intersections. the county can have up to 20 according to state law. every spring something wonderful comes to life here in our city. the environmental film festival in the nation's capital.

a volcano in southern japan is erupting for a second day today spewing hot rocks and ash into the sky. despite the violent nature of this, there was no major damage. scientists say the volcano's been erupting steadily for years, the eruption yesterday the most violent in two years. an eruption warning has been issued urging residents to evacuate. if you've ever lost your change while going through security at the airport, you're not the only wealth. the tsa pocketed more than $400,000 worth of spare change. under federal law the tsa puts the money into homeland security coffers. a florida congressman is hoping to change the law. dulles had the most loose

hello, everybody, welcome back. i'm doug kammerer, taking a look at something really cool right now. this is a look over the city, right now you the washington monument, here's the cathedral. a little bit of a shower. take a look at the cumulus clouds building up. see this right in here, that is the rain craft coming down across parts of our area. i'll show you where that shower is. a pretty cool shot from our towercam this afternoon. as you look at our citycam over toward the airport, winds gusting to 22 miles an hour, a very warm day pup know that already. still 81 in college park, 77 in hunting town, right now 79in ft.

a very good wide receiver. the biggest news, he's already signed and sealed, almost delivered here in washington, and that's pierre garcon, he made the announcement on his facebook page. he's a wide receiver who was one of the hottest on the free agent market. 6'0", 210 pounds coming off a career year in indy, without peyton manning he caught 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns. just 25 years old, he fits the bill in terms of being a youth player forward redskins. he he never had more than 1,000 yards receiving but he's gotten better every year. he gets a monster contract, five years 42.5 million. 21 and a half million of that is guaranteed money. it's been a craze zbi last couple days. first we get the trade, where the redskins move up to get the second overall pick where they will presumably draft rg3. then they get penalized by the

another ncaa tournament trying to avoid the upset. they're a third seed taking on 14th seeded belmont. a very popular cinderella pick this year among the experts and among the average fan as like. belmont located in nashville, tennessee, they can put the ball in the basket. they ranked fourth in the nation in scoring. their head coach one of just 11 active coaches with six wins. the bruins running a 14-game winning streak. they don't expect georgetown to care too much about that at all. >> momentum is big in the game of basketball. i don't think georgetown cares how many games we've won. they're going to look 59 the schedule and not respect this a far as the win streak they're in the big east. i think the biggest thing, they're not going to get any extra points because they're in the big east. we're just going to have to go out there and play a complete 40 minutes. >> they're a three seed, which means the committee thinks they're one of the top 12 teams
