>> the man accused of shooting his estranged wife and dumping her body on connecticut avenue in kensington is found dead tonight inside a rockville home. jackie benson is there live with the latest. jackie. >> reporter: doreen, police activity became very intense just a couple of hours ago. dozens of police officers took up positions in in neighborhood near montgomery college around a home owned by someone we're told is it known to the suspect. moments ago montgomery county police chief thomas major updated us. >> the tactical units entered the home and found him deceased of an apparent gunshot wound. we believe it was self-inflicted. tactical units are currently clearing the house to make sure the rest of it is safe. >> reporter: it is a shocking end to this morning's rush hour murder in kensington. the security camera video from a

nearby business shows a surreal scene during tuesday morning rush hour. a minivan stroped briefly, presumably when 36-year-old heather mcguire, the estranged mother of his 1-year-old son is shot. the minivan pulls away after her body is shoves out on connecticut avenue. cars drive past for 45 seconds before a tractor trailer stops almost hitting mcguire. court records show she filed a restraining order in 2011 accusing of him of slapping her, shove her and hitting her with a freezer door. he had been lives out of his car since the couple split and was despondent over not seeing his son. police began to suspect he was on foot when they found the minivan. again, an end tonight to the day-long manhunt for the suspect from this morning's rush hour murder on a busy street in downtown kensington.

corruption. the subpoenas ask for information dating back to 2003 on any dealings with businessman jeffrey thompson. the fbi recently raided his home and offices. news 4's tom sherwood broke this story and reports the subpoenas are seen as a major expansion of the criminal probes into d.c. politi politics. the u.s. attorney's office refused to comment. now to our weather and the warmest temperatures of the year so far, in the 80s in some places. doug, will this continue? >> 80s in a lot of places, 82 in culpepper and fredericksburg. it was warm everywhere, all across the region, sxe we saw thunderstorm activity tonight very reminiscent of what we would see towards late spring or early summer. along the eastern shore we will see another chance for thunderstorms, though. some could be strong, and we'll talk about those plus how long

can the nice temperatures last. the complete forecast is in just a minute. still no sign of a man who carjacked an suv with a 5-month-old in the back seat. it happened just before 8:00 this morning in southeast washington. police say the baby was strapped into his car steet when a man jumped into the suv and took off. there was an intense search and it tended a half mile away. they say the carjacker ditched the suv with the child in it. he wasn't hurt and reunited with his parents. >> it's the most frightening thing that i experienced. but for the grace of god we have our nephew, my sister has her son back, and you know, again it's just -- if god had not shown his favor on us, there would be a different result. >> they don't have a good sdrichgs of the carjacker. mayday, mayday, mayday. >> that's the call for help made after the roof came crashing down on a burning home p in northeast d.c. last april. tonight the man responsible for setting the fire was sentenced

to 25 years in prison. maurice dews confessed to eight arsons across the district in prince georges county including one that jr.ed four firefighters. in a bizarre twist he said he set the fire to be part of a rescue mission, sometimes pulling people from the houses he torched. tonight defense officials tell nbc news that xhol may be a factor in that deadly shooting spree in afghanistan. over the weekend a staff sergeant alleged shot and killed 16 civilians including children. today investigators say a search party that night found him on his belly in a nearby field. when they got on base, they say he admitted to the murders. at the white house today president obama conveyed the severity of this situation. >> the united states takes this as seriously as if it was our own citizens and our own children who were murdered. we're heart-broken over the loss of innocent life. the killing of innocent

civilians is outrageous, and it's unacceptable. >> charges could be filed against that staff sergeant by the end of the week. an abused dog found in war-torn afghanistan, but tonight he gets a new lease on life in our area. jane spoke with ms. new ownhis about the special arrival today at the airport. >> if he looks like enjoying the good life, he is. he's enjoying his new home inial hex andrea after being rescued from the streets of afghanistan. >> several of the soldiers spotted a little stray white pup that was bleeding from the neck and just was winter. >> this photo shows polly fighting an infection after a too tight dog collar became embedded in ms. neck. caught in the case yos of war, american soldiers notified the afghan stray animal league, an arlington nonprofit that works to rescue dogs and cats.

run out of gas near the watergate and it will cost you. the price is a whooping 5.39 per gallon of regular. d.c. has the highest prices in our area. marylanders pay 3.81 a gallon and in virginia it's 3.70. gas prices are 30 cents higher than they were just a month ago. it could be months more before you see any relief because the prices typically go up during the summer as we know. traffic back to normal tonight at this hour after a crane came crashing down in fairfax county.

this accident created gridlock for hours during the evening rush hour. we're told a boom truck fell onto the eastbound lanes between mcgar rhetty road. no one was hurt and drives were on a stand still between the beltway and i-66 for hourdz. by 6:30 traffic was moving slowly around the accident. it if you were in an accident and lost a limb, you might think your life was over. for a young woman who had a bright career in the modeling industry, losing her hand gave her more strength she never knew she had. >> i had no idea my idea my hand was gone. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a great weekend of fun. off-roading and camping in the california desert. in an instant everything changed when the dune buggy in which she was riding flipped over and left her without a right hand. >> it sounds so strange, but i

was hit like with a ton of bricks of just strength. >> reporter: dominick, then a 21-year-old aspiring model, says she immediately began trying to calm her friends. she was losing a lot of blood and one of the friends, a form erma reason, made a makeshift tourniquet for her. >> he saved my life. >> reporter: she was brought to a hop hospital in phoenix, arizona where doctors tried to reattach her hand but had no success. she was left an amputee. >> it didn't hit me until i was out of the hospital, but i didn't realize this is forever until i had gotten home and started doing everyday tasks. >> reporter: just imagine trying to function without a hand suddenly. the things we take for fwranted because next to impossible. holding two things at once, using a computer or cell phone. >> you can imagine the hand is involved in everything we do, every functional activity. so having that type of amputation takes a lot of

as you walked around the city this evening. 81 degrees is the high temperature. a low of 56. the low was 1 degree higher than our average high temperature was, and there's the record for today set back in 1990. that record is 87 degrees. current temperature out there right now, a very mild and very warm 67. winds out of the south at 6 miles per hour. right now i don't expect these numbers to drop a whole lot, although they'll go down maybe about another 10 degrees or so. 64 in leesburg and 68 in la pla plato. very warm and mild out ahead of this. it did give us a chance for showers earlier. look at the numbers across the region. this shows you there's no cold air anywhere. 73 in columbus, ohio, 72 in state college, 73 in new york city, and even 71 out there towards ocean city. no matter which direction our air is coming from tomorrow, it's going to be coming from a fairly warm direction. storm 4 radar picking up a couple of showers way out there

towards the eastern shore making their way into southern portions of delaware. we saw a couple of showers and even a couple rumbles of thunder towards annapolis and northern calvert county and around the waldorf area earlier this evening, but that was really about it. some other showers around fredericksburg and warrenton this afternoon and those are gone. all because of a little frontal boundary, very warm air ahead of the front. very warm air behind that front, too, as we see plenty of sunshine foam. then on thursday we watch another frontal boundaries. could be showers along the higher elevations here on thursday afternoon, but most should stay dry on thursday. it's friday that we have a pretty good chance of seeing scattered thunderstorm activity, maybe even a couple of strong storms. still don't anticipate anything severe, but we watch the chance for rain coming in on friday. i think this is a little bit overdone here, but i expect to see some shower activity on friday and probably into saturday, too. just about all days are on the

warm side, but not just warm but abnormally warm. 47 to 55 degrees tomorrow as you stet out the door. temperatures tomorrow afternoon just about where they were today, 73 to 80 degrees and sunny and nice and warm and pleasant once again tomorrow and into the weekend. 80 on thursday, 77 on friday. there's that chance of showers. you may want to up that chance a little bit on friday and same deal for saturday and another chance for rain on monday. the average is around 55, 56 degrees. we stay above 70 for the next seven days, and you might as well make it ten. >> yeah, go for it. >> seems like we pay for this lat later, though. >> i don't think so. that's a longer conversation. a wild scene on the streets of d.c. tonight on this warm evening. half a dozen elephants and clowns and other animals took part in the parade starting in garfield park up to verizon
