6:00 pm
>> in fact, dottie, from four to eight feet this week, he has not missed. 18 of 18. this putt from six feet four inches. >> see if he can go 19 for 19 with the tournament on the line. >> and some emotion. we don't see that much from sang-moon bae. >> had the lead by himself at one point yesterday. lost it. struggled with his swing. worked his way out of it and has kept his hopes alive of winning for the first time. >> as dottie pepper said, this was not an easy putt.
6:01 pm
above, you can see two or three inches of break left to right. struck right in the middle of the putter face, though. you can see the ball turning over, see the name turning over. that's what you're looking for. >> more evidence that sang-moon bae is here to stay on the pga tour and have an impact in the years to come. final group is left back at 18 and off the fairway is goosen. >> two balls, only a yard apart. goosen first, 161, and the better of the two lies in my opinion. >> it's like he actually got through that one a little better, but that one comes up short. it's in the front bunker. >> a couple of years ago when jim furyk was on his way to victory here at 18, hit pretty much of a shank shot. >> yeah, he was deeper into the trees and was trying to play a little low punch shot and got a
6:02 pm
little bit ahead of it and caught it toward the hozzle. he only needed a five to win and he figured out a way to do that. >> this now, gary, from 160. the grass a little more lush here and the ball has settled. i mean it's sitting down a little bit. >> roger, it will be interesting to see what he attempts here. i think if he goes directly at the hole, if he carries the green-side bunker, chances are the ball will release well past the hole. >> par will join a playoff, birdie will win it. >> actually it looks like he's looking a little out to the right. >> actually this is just left of the hole. oh, man, watch out, there's a slope over there. okay. stays up on top. >> jim furyk will have a birdie putt to win his second transitions championship when we come back.
6:03 pm
6:04 pm
jim furyk into it, looking over his birdie putt, which would win it. first play is goosen from the bunker. >> a little bit of a plugged lie, but on an uphill slope, it's going to force the ball up into the air quickly, so i think this is doable, just flop it out onto the front of the green and
6:05 pm
let it release. it came out a little hotter than he wanted. >> goosen will head for virginia beach wednesday for an injection in his back, and it has been an incredible performance by him this week with that tentative back that he says has really been bothering him for a couple of years. but the stage is clear now for jim furyk to pick up his first victory in 18 months since he won the tour championship at east lake and clinched the fedex cup. since then, though, he has been waiting for the next victory to come along. coming off the heels of his worst season ever on the pga tour. he said he developed a bad attitude. he says he's cranky to fluff out there on the bag. he says he did his best not to take it home to his wife, tabitha, and her kids. but it was a tough year for him. gathered himself, took some weeks off, and came into 2012 with a renewed energy. here he is with a chance to pick
6:06 pm
up the first win in quite some time. >> and, rog, certainly not an easy putt. shot length telling us just under 26 feet. but that's the least of the problems. >> yeah, you never want to say it can't be done, but this is an unlikely putt to hole. big sweep to the right and you've got to be very careful with speed. as that putt starts turning right down that hill, it's going to pick up some pace. this is really a tough putt. >> we've seen a couple of other players putt from this portion of the green earlier in the day and both didn't play nearly enough break. left the ball low.
6:07 pm
>> gave it a good run. >> he did. that was a very good putt. you can see him motioning with his hand, he thought it would turn a little bit more. to be honest, i'm surprised it didn't turn a little more than it did. >> it had and tthe look of atteg to win it instead of cozy it up in what will be a four-man playoff. robert garrigus has stuck around after his final round 64. so the playoff will head back to
6:08 pm
this hole at 18 and then go 16, 17, 18. go to the snake pit if necessary. goosen for par. >> well, i've got to take my hat off to him. he really hung in there. after the first few holes, i was wondering if he would even complete the round, let alone post a reasonable score. so kudos to him for staying with it. >> after the double bogey, bogey start, plus 4 in his first five holes and you just can't recover from that, even though he got it together in the middle portion of the round but ends with two straight bogeys and a 75. so jim furyk taps in for his 2 under round of 69 and we've got a four-way playoff. and the first playoff in the 12-year history of this tournament. so they'll go back to the par 418th. luke donald, jim furyk, robert
6:09 pm
garrigus and sang-moon bae heading back to 18. let's see if we can decide it.
6:10 pm
all right, hi again, everyone. back down to florida in just a
6:11 pm
moment. first let's bring you up to date on some of the other sports news of the day. we start with march madness. first game of the day midwest region, big east against the acc. georgetown and nc state. and the wolfpack pulled off the offset. they'll face the winner of kansas and purdue. nc state is in the sweet 16 for the first time since 2005. michigan state gets a narrow victory over st. louis. another impressive game for draymond green. they will now face louisville. moving to the nhl, terrific game in philly today. the streaking penguins, winners of 11 straight, taking on the flyers. pick it up in the third. pens up 2-0. they get philly on the board, the blast so we're 2-1. then it's the scottie hartnell show. just over 15:00 left and he ties it up. this one went to overtime. great pass and hartnell beats
6:12 pm
marc-andre fleury. philadelphia wins it. pittsburgh's winning streak snapped at 11. the pens miss out at a chance to pull even with the rangers. no points today for sidney crosby. and we've got more hockey tonight on the nbc sports network. good matchup in chicago between the hawks and the caps. ovechkin and his mates holding on to the eighth and final playoff spot. right now a big game tonight over on the nbc sports network. that's it. back to florida now. more final round coverage of the transitions championship. >> this has been the u.s. bank nbc sports report. u.s. bank, all of us serving you. sang-moon bae, the only one of the four playoff contenders, without a pga tour win heading back to the tee at 18 to meet luke donald and company. in the meantime we show you how this four-man playoff was
6:13 pm
determined. jim furyk began with the lead with retief goosen and this is how he started his day. his third at the par 5 1st. >> it was not an easy bunker shot, not much green to work with but furyk made it look pretty easy. >> he played even par golf from there to post the 13-under number. garrigus came from the farthest back. he had a long birdie at 17. he began the day five off furyk's lead. so a birdie at 17. and then a birdie at 18. he had a final round 64. to wait around in the end, it would be good enough to get into the playoff. luke donald began the day back of the leaders, 11 under, at 8 under. so he was coming back, birdie at 10. and luke donald posted a final round 66 to get to the 13-under number. sang-moon bae for par at 18 after he ran by his third a bit.
6:14 pm
so the four guys are in and there's not a lot of playoff success there when you look at the records. jim furyk has been involved in the most playoffs, but he's won three. the rest of the guys, obviously sang-moon bae, this is his first playoff. garrigus is 0 for 2 and luke donald is 0 for 2. any feelings as you look at this four-man playoff? >> well, i would think if robert garrigus or sang-moon bae can get the ball in the fairway at 18, i think they will have an advantage because they'll be playing a much shorter second shot up that hill. we saw garrigus hit a mammoth drive in regulation. the second shot was from about 120 yards, he was able to put a wedge in close and make a birdie. if it goes beyond 18 and it gets to the snake pit and 16, it could get interesting. >> this four-man playoff could have been bigger. it could have been six guys. as you take a look at some of the guys that missed the playoff, scott piercy posted a 62 more than four hours ago, but in the end that 12-under number
6:15 pm
would come up a little short. that would have got him to the 13 under with that birdie at 18. still, an incredible round by piercy. jeff overton also had a birdie attempt at 18 which would have joined the 13 under group. so a good comeback by overton, who shot 66, but finished one off the playoff number. ken duke was 13 under before he missed that short par at the 17th. and in the most heart breaking of all, after bogeying 17, ernie els had this par putt at 18 that would have gotten him into the playoff. so four guys play on, gary, but stinging misses there, especially for ernie els. >> well, i think he has to be the most disappointed, no question. after a brilliant second shot at 16, he had a putt from under five feet for birdie to get to 15 under par which would have clearly put him in control of this golf tournament. and then to bogey 17 and 18, you know, he has to be devastated.
6:16 pm
>> so the last two guys, donald actually making his way back to the 18th tee. jim furyk has the most wins by far with 16 on the pga tour, been involved in a lot more playoffs, as we indicated. 3-7 record of extra holes. >> it's going to be interesting. it's been a long time since robert garrigus finished his final round. yes, i'm sure he's probably been over at the range trying to hit some baullls, but that's a long time to wait before you play another shot. >> let's listen in as they determine the hitting order out there among the four. >> good luck to you. >> best of luck. >> best of luck. >> david cole with transitions optical, our host this week, is going to help us out here with the draw. we're going to play 18, 16, 17
6:17 pm
and 18 in a playoff, gentlemen. robert, you finished first, you'll draw first, luke, you'll draw second, sang-moon bae, you'll draw third and jim will draw fourth. >> number two. >> one. >> three. >> okay. >> sang-moon, you'll lead us off. gentlemen, play well. >> so you heard mike russell say to sang-moon bae, the lone member of this foursome who has yet to win on the pga tour. again, just a rookie, leads it off at this difficult 18th again. he was positioned perfectly in regulation in the fairway. >> he was. he hit a ma'mmoth drive up the hill. then i thought he maybe tried to get a little too cute or tried to do something he didn't need
6:18 pm
to do. tried to play a three-quarter looking shot rather than hitting a nice, full 9 iron up the hill. >> we've got double coverage for you out there. dottie pepper and roger. >> this is a low cut. it should bounce right into the area where the bunkers are. >> garrigus has just one pga tour win. it came a couple of years ago. children's miracle network classic. he became the first player since john daly to lead the tour in driving and win in the same season. see how this drive goes.
6:19 pm
>> wow. this is a high, to youriwering . this is perfect. this is right in the middle. >> just flew it past the ball of sang-moon bae. that is huge up that hill. >> furyk, who went right in regulation. >> this ball drawing up the left-hand side just at the edges of the bunkers. needs to kick right. i believe it stayed just short of it. >> it got it right at the very end. came within a foot of going in the bunker but dribbled back down to the fight.
6:20 pm
the ball will be below his feet, but a lot better than it could have been. >> and here he is, luke donald, on the cuss -- cusp of regaining that number one world ranking again, just a week after relinquishing it to rory. >> that ball up the right side and cutting. >> it will miss the fairway into that area where jim furyk played from and it was a very heavy lie. thick rough right there. we'll have to wait and see. >> so the early advantage to 34-year-old robert garrigus, who just pounded his tee shot up the 18th.
6:21 pm
6:22 pm
there they are, pretty good mix of guys. you've got garrigus looking for win number two, luke donald hoping to regain the top spot in the world with his fifth pga tour win. sang-moon bae just getting his career started and the veteran jim furyk looking for win number 17. >> and a second win here at the transitions championship, having won just a couple of years ago in 2010. >> by the way, garrigus' drive, roger maltbie, went 313 yards. so a mammoth drive by garrigus. he will be last to play a second
6:23 pm
shot, obviously. while we have a moment, remind you of the all-new episode of "celebrity apprentice" that comes your way tonight at 9:00/8:00 central on nbc. again, the first playoff hole. they will go to the snake pit, 16, 17, 18 if necessary. luke donald looking over the yardage, first to play, dottie. >> 152 yards just to the front of the green, 164 total. gary, you're right, that's a pretty lush patch and it settled down.
6:24 pm
>> the problem by missing the fairway is now it becomes a guess. does the ball come out quickly or does it come out softly if you hit it just a little bit heavy. >> it came out very, very high and right at the flagstick, gary. >> luke donald carries the bunker by about a foot. >> you said it earlier, gary, all these guys ahave not been i the mix of high-pressure stakes like luke donald has been the last couple of years. this was a thing of beauty from up above. >> watch, it barely carries the bunker. >> hit it exactly where you needed to to get it close.
6:25 pm
>> leaves himself a very makeable putt. >> a statement has been made by donald, who could be close to regaining that number one ranking. here is bae. >> 146, a slightly hanging lie an a touch uphill. that's pretty good looking as well. >> yes. it's above the hole but it's going to catch that little slope, dottie, and there it goes running down toward that little low. unfortunate there. >> furyk is next. >> 140 left to the hole here. the ball has settled just slightly in the intermediate cut. the ball will be below his feet.
6:26 pm
this is one you've really got to stay with, gary acti, or he's g to lose it right. >> they're calculating that this shot will play about 149 yards. >> boy, that's a good-looking shot. >> no, it's deep, rog, and that's going to catch that same slope and fall down into that low area. >> so garrigus has not much
6:27 pm
left, roger. >> 116 left. what a great tee shot he hit here. wow. >> almost the identical distance he had in regulation. he was able to take the spin off a wedge and hit it within about six feet of the hole. he needs to do that right now. >> it looks good. >> oh, wow. garrigus knew it from the get-go. >> that's pretty good there. >> is it ever. but donald is right there as well. >> sudden death at the transitions championship.
6:28 pm
6:29 pm
four-man playoff continues. robert garrigus and luke donald have short birdie putts. jim furyk, sang-moon bae, well outside of those two, to play first. >> and furyk with a big sweeping break from right to left across the ridge downhill. actually as he's putting up into the ridge, it's actually a little uphill. once it gets across that ridge, then it runs away from him. this is -- well, again, it's really an unlikely putt to hole.
