handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. there are new demands for action and outraged citizens are urged to remain calm in response to the trayvon martin shooting case today. civil rights leaders are pressuring authorities to at least arrest the man accused of killing an unarmed black teen last month. we have the latest from sanford, florida. demonstrators calling for the arrest of george zimmerman are especially outraged at the treatment zimmerman has received so far from florida police. >> as far as we know he is still in possession of the nine millimeter that he used to shoot this young man. >> reporter: they're calling for his concealed weapon permit to be rebuffed but cries for his immediate arrest have even reached the halls of congress. >> trayvon martin was murdered 25 days ago and, still, there has been no arrest. the evidence is overwhelming. >> reporter: that evidence is zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in sanford following martin on the evening of

february 26th although 911 tapes show police told him not to. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: and admitting he shot martin but only in self-defense. >> he's coming towards me. >> okay. >> he's got his hand in his waist band and he's a black male. >> reporter: a neighbor of zimmerman's has come to his defense saying there had been a string of burglaries in the neighborhood. >> it is really sad that he has already been convicted in the public media. >> after the shooting sanford police decided against charging him and released zimmerman. >> they decided on the scene to be the judge and jury and i just want this guy arrested and so he can be brought to justice. >> reporter: state investigators are back on the scene of the shooting wednesday the day after federal agents were assigned in the case and after the florida state attorney said a grand jury will be seated next mongts to launch a new investigation. >> the shooter has ties to

northern virginia. coming up on news 4 at 5:00 jane watrel will tell us what people who know george zimmerman are saying in manassas. >> reporter: big sports news on this wednesday. tebow mania is going to be in the big apple now. today the new york jets traded for quarterback tim tebow. denver didn't want tebow since they just signed peyton manning yesterday. however, just a few minutes ago espn reports there could be a problem with the trade involving tebow's contract. the nfl is coming down hard on the saints for the bounty scandal. saints head coach sean payton has been suspended for the entire season without pay. former washington and new orleans defensive coordinator craig williams has been suspended indefinitely. the saints had a bounty program that gave thousands of dollars to players who knocked out opposing players. the league says more than 20 saints defensive players were involved in this program. the saints' general manager was also suspended and the team will lose two draft picks.

a former mount rainier, maryland police officer will spend the next decade in prison. today a judge sentenced 27-year-old jean jillette to a 20-year sentence with half of that suspended. he pled guilty last november to attempted murder charges. prosecutors say he lured a 20-year-old man to his home last summer and shot him after the man refused to perform sex acts. if jillette is found guilty of another crime after serving his sentence he will have to go back and serve the other ten years. police officers tried to pull a man out of a burning car this morning and then found that he had been shot and killed. it happened in the 11,000 block of palmer road in fort washington around 1:00 a.m. m marcelles jackson was shot several times and police do not believe the fire was intextually set. mitt romney is coming off a commanding win in the illinois primary last night and is telling supporters he is in his words almost there. and some new backers seem to agree with that.

steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: mitt romney's 12-point illinois win impressed big name republicans. and won him the endorsement of jeb bush, popular former governor of florida, who said, now is the time for republicans to unite behind governor romney. another prominent romney supporter called for an end to the primary fight. >> the sooner get on to the target and the debate and the contest between mitt romney and president obama the better off we will be. >> reporter: rick santorum tried spin. >> all the endorse ers, the establishment, comfortable with the status quo, go with mitt romney. >> it is great to be back in pennsylvania. >> but his weak second place in illinois may doom his campaign. >> if rick santorum cannot break through against mitt romney in a one on one match in a big midwestern state he can't turn over the table of this race

joins us from the storm center with more on that and on today. >> we're starting off an extremely warm spring, too. temperatures out there today 67 degrees. now, that is cooler than we've been over the past couple days but that is still nearly 10 degrees above average and i don't think we're done just yet. i think we'll see some sunshine over the next couple hours and i expect the temperatures to rise. winds right now out of the northeast about 3 miles per hour. and we are starting to see some breaks in those clouds. temperatures down to the south where we're seeing the sun. la plata right now at 70 degrees. charlottesville 72. fredericksburg and culpepper both at 68. up to the north gaithersburg coming in at 64 degrees. so a nice afternoon all across the area but a little on the cloudy side. no rain to talk about on storm 4 radar. i don't expect to see any shower activity. only a slight chance of that throughout the evening into the overnight hours. most of the rain has stayed to our south around the norfolk area down to the west around roanoke and off to the west through portions of southern west virginia. but for us, we don't expect much in the way of shower activity

jihad he says. he has admitted to carrying out all of the recent killings in the area and says he killed the french soldiers to protest western intervention in afghanistan and killed the jewish children to avenge quote children killed in palestine. so mareh is hard core, home grown, clearly an islamist. that is where we are right now with this unfolding story. i'm jim maceda reporting from teluge. >> the shooting rampage allegedly carried out by a u.s. soldier is putting new attention on the army's mental health programs. the army is now reviewing whether soldiers are properly diagnosed. 16 civilians were killed in the shooting spree. staff sergeant robert bales is in solitary confinement at fort leavenworth in kansas while the military investigates. bales' attorney has suggested a defense based on stress from his multiple tours of duty. today the wife of jason

bridal train according to the gunest book of world records. it is nearly two miles long. in fact, it is so long the designers showed off the train by dangling it from a hot air balloon yesterday. the gown was created by a fashion designer in romania and took ten seems treses nearly a hundred days to make it. actress reese witherspoon is breaking out a new production. u.s. production confirms reese is pregnant with her third child. she and her new hubby have been married for about a year now. sources say she is about three months along and both are, quote, so very happy with this latest addition to the family. witherspoon also has two children from her previous marriage to actor ryan philippe. jersey shores star mike "the situation" is denying rumors he has checked into rehab. a rep for the retallet star tells "access hollywood" he is getting rest after an extensive production and appearance schedule. last night he tweeted, don't believe everything you read or hear.

earlier this week mtv announced plans to start shooting season six of "jersey shore" this summer. the entire cast, including mom to be snooki is slated to return. well, it's not broken. it's just bent. >> don't try to get in my head. >> oh, i'm already there. >> "bent" is a new show debuting tonight on nbc. it stars amanda pete perhaps best known for her role from the movie "something's got to give" and david walton who played dr. rick in the movie "fired up." she plays a recently divorced high strung lawyer raising a 10-year-old daughter and walton is a free spirited ladies man she hires as a contractor. >> there is a tone and a sense of humor that isn't on tv right now. i think it's really exciting and unique and i think all the reviewers across the board, what they're saying about this, is they only had to watch one episode and they couldn't stop. they watched all six. they all loved the show and they think it's sort of this

this evening, and one of us gets off soon. don't you leave soon, barbara? >> i'm going to go out to see the sun. >> your evening is going to be fantastic. i think you have another hour left pat. >> that's okay. >> you'll be fine. i'm here until 7:30 when the sun is already set. for most of us it gois going toe a nice evening once the sun starts to come out. i also expect temperatures to go up a bit. right now we've seen the cloud cover, the fog across the area. even dense fog earlier this morning. but that did not stop temperatures from once again climbing to near 10 degrees above average. you think we've seen a warm winter and of course now we're in the second day of spring but, yes. was winter warm? it was the warmest ever as a matter of fact. 2011, 2012, the temperatures 45.6 degrees. that's the average temperature for the entire winter. and that is beating the old record by more than a degree and a half. simply amazing how warm we have been. the other winter 44.1 degrees and in 1973 to 1974, 43.5

degrees. doesn't sound like a lot. 45.6. that is a record, folks. temperatures on the warm side. 67 degrees under mostly cloudy if not completely cloudy skies depending on where you are. winds out of the northeast about three miles an hour. we are starting to see some breaks in the clouds and you can tell where those breaks are. 71 in la plata. a couple breaks there over toward easton. 68. 70 in culpepper. 68 toward frederick. we're going to continue to see those temperatures come up i think another 2 or 3 degrees before 6:00 or 7:00 tonight as we will see a little bit in the way of some clearing. take a look at these numbers to the west. these are simply incredible numbers. 85 in chicago. 85 in cincinnati. this is the seventh day in a row chicago has set a record. that's the kind of heat that we're going to see move our way. i think friday we will get into the 80s. but then comes this guy. this is a monster of a storm. it's cree atded upwards of 4 to 8 inches of rain. they've seen tornadoes, a tremendous amount of snow back toward the west, and that whole

system is moving our way. if you have plans this weekend, you want to make sure you stay tuned to the forecast because i think we're in for a lot of rain. no rain right now around the metro area. all of that rain is well down to the south and east and that's where it is going to stay i think through the rest of the evening. so we'll stay on the dry side and as i mentioned things are going to start to clear up here. mild conditions today. tomorrow we're back into the warm stuff. into the mid 70s i believe. i think we'll see a better chance of a shower, maybe a thunderstorm during the day tomorrow. kind of like what we saw early this morning with shower activity. then on friday, very warm with a lot of sunshine. friday is looking spectacular. but then here comes our storm. watch what our storm does. it's going to bring that rain right on in here during the day on saturday. mostly cloudy. mild. humid this evening. a few showers. temperatures dropping 61 to 67 by around 7:00 or 8:00 tonight. tomorrow morning watch out for some dense fog. we saw it out there this morning. we could see it again tomorrow. maybe even some drizzle out there tomorrow afternoon, early clouds, afternoon sun, possible

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. here is what's happening in the news at this hour. investigators and protesters descended on sanford, florida today as outrage over the trayvon martin shooting case continues to grow. civil rights leaders say police should at least arrest george zimmerman. the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old last month. zimmerman claimed self-defense. many see the shooting as

racially motivated. federal and state authorities are now investigating. we'll have live team coverage at 5:00 including news about the shooter's ties to this area. mitt romney is set to hold a town hall in baltimore county, maryland within the hour. he is fresh off a big primary victory in illinois and the momentum appears to have shifted decisively in his favor. today former florida governor jeb bush endorsed romney and encouraged other republicans to rally around his candidacy. 18 hours and counting now for police who are engaged in a standoff with the man suspected of shooting seven people in southern france. hundreds of police are surrounding the house he's holed up in. the suspect is a 24-year-old french national. he told police he carried out the killings in the name of al qaeda. an investigation is under way in prince george's county after a man was found shot in a burning car. it happened in the 11,000 block of palmer road in fort

washington. police do not believe the fire was intentionally set. the victim was shot several times. we all know that a dog is man's best friend and for a georgia toddler this rings true even more. the 3-year-old was born with an extremely rare condition and requires an oxygen tank to help her breathe. >> but a short cord and heavy equipment kept her from getting around very far. nbc's amy robach shows us how her furry little friend is giving her the chance to truly be a kid. >> reporter: by all accounts mr. gibbs looks like any other golden dude puppy. but mr. gibbs is here to work. >> good job. make sure we got it turned on. we going to go play? let's go play. >> reporter: his boss? 3-year-old aleada. >> what do we do with mr. gibbs? >> down, down. >> good boy.

>> this special little girl suffers from neuro cell plasia in infancy or nehi, an extremely rare lung disease requiring her to breathe with the aid of an oxygen tank. only 500 children in the united states have ever been diagnosed with it. she was born premature and had breathing issues from the start but as months went by her parents debby and aaron had an instinct something was very wrong. >> debby was able to look up all the tests they were doing. the first one, like she would have made it to four months. and so you just go through two weeks of not being able to help. >> once the diagnosis was made doctors told them they needed to leave utah and live at a lower elevation and aleda would need an oxygen tank at all times to continue breathing. >> she was already falling

behind on her milestones and she didn't sit up until she was 8 months old and as soon as we got her on the oxygen she started catching up quickly. >> reporter: but catching up presented a new problem for a toddler attached to ten-pound oxygen tanks. >> you know, when she crawled it wasn't a big deal because she couldn't get that far away. when she started walking we had to come up with something different. we saw a show on tv about service dogs and that's when it clicked. you know, i don't need a cart for her. i need a bottle that's going to follow her. >> reporter: enter mr. gibbs. they found dog trainer ashley kinsley and proposed the idea of training a service dog to carry the oxygen tanks. >> he's trained to do everything he needs to do. but for a service animal to do that with a 3-year-old is kind of the difficult part. >> reporter: but so far mr. gibbs has passed the test and aleda has a new found freedom. >> what is your favorite thing to do outside? >> swing! >> reporter: who is your best friend? >> gibbs. >> and mr. gibbs and aleda hope

no, i hear a click or nothing. then it lists all the stuff of what it could be. now you also need an app for a dictionary so that you understand what a manifold is because it does use words like that. but my favorite was one of these. my car makes noises. you hear ticks? i hear mini ticks. only while moving? while moving and stopped. at one point it says get a screwdriver and put the metal against the car and put the handle up against your ear so you can hear where the ticks are coming from. i thought i hope this thing also has triple-a's phone number or a tow truck so i can call them to figure out what is going on. for you people with fancy cars there is the onboard diagnostic codes which you know what that is so you can, if you see it on your dashboard, whatever your codes might be, you can put it in and see. it will tell you. we have an audi, ford, infinity, jaguar. your series throttle control

okay. you promised us sunshine. >> yes. >> is it out there now? >> some locations we're starting to see that sun and it's slowly creeping north. normally clouds come from the west or from the northeast clouds are moving to the north. interestingly enough it's an odd weather pattern but we are going to see some sunshine in parts of the area over the next couple hours so don't put away the sunglasses just yet. take a look. 68 degrees. temperatures are still rising. we were at 67 last hour and now 68. winds out of the northeast right now. they are calm as a matter of fact and dew point is at 59. that very warm dew point is going to leave the potential for more fog overnight last night. we saw a lot of fog this morning. even a dense fog advisory for some of you. i expect to see fog again tomorrow morning. 71 right now in la plata. 70 in culpepper. now up to 70 in cambridge where the sun is trying to break out to the south but i do think we will see more breaks. don't expect completely sunny skies by the time the sun goes down but i expect to see more breaks. most of us should see some sunshine. here is what i think we are all

going to see on saturday and on sunday. this storm out here is really a monster of a storm. yesterday we had moisture from the gulf of mexico all the way up toward canada. we kind of still have the moisture train riding all the way up incredibly warm temperatures all the way to the canadian border. this area of low pressure, this spin in the atmosphere will move our way so enjoy tomorrow. enjoy friday. but then this weekend we've got big changes. i'll show you those right now. mild temperatures for today. the showers down to the south. here comes the nice, warm air. during the day tomorrow. very warm on friday as we get into the 80s as that warm air moves our way. slight chance of showers friday but i think most of us will stay dry. then here is what happens on saturday. look at all the rain associated with this area and this frontal boundary. that front is not going to move very fast in that area of low pressure behind it is only going to increase our chances for rain on sunday, too. as we make our way through the next couple days here's what you can expect. temperatures into the 70s. tomorrow 77 in d.c. 82 on friday. under mostly cloudy skies. or mostly sunny skies rather on

assistant football coach jerry sandusky. sandusky was arrested in november and is on house arrest awaiting a mid may trial on charges he sexually abused ten boys over 15 years. he denies the allegations. the counseling services are confidential and will be provided by counselors from outside penn state. check out this video. a thief beats up a store clerk during a robbery in florida and the crime is caught on tape. the brazen attack happened about two weeks ago in lauderdale lakes. the surveillance video, seen here, shows the suspect punching the victim in the head after jumping the counter. you then see him taking all the cash from the register. police say the clerk wasn't seriously hurt in this incident. they hope this video will help lead to an arrest. they are seen as stylish and fashion forward. but skinny jeans may be a little too forward for a school district in connecticut. officials in the city of meridan are looking at a dress code change that could ban skinny jeans.

new clues have emerged in the desperate search for a missing california teenager. sierra lamar left for school on friday morning just south of san jose and hasn't been seen since. nbc's kristen dahlgren reports police are now searching her cell phone records and interviewing registered sex offenders in that area. ♪ amazing grace >> announcer: a vigil for 15-year-old sierra lamar her mother broke down. >> i love you so much. >> reporter: it's been five days since she last saw her daughter. >> she goes mom i love you too. have a good day at work. that was the routine every morning. >> reporter: but all the tears and pleas -- >> i want my daughter back. >> reporter: have brought few clues about where the petite sophomore could be. on friday morning before leaving for school sierra says sierra

the northern virginia area. good evening. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm wendy rieger. jim handly has the night off. investigators and protesters descended on sanford, florida today. state authorities returned to the scene where 28-year-old george zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin last month. zimmerman is a neighborhood watch volunteer who claimed it was in self-defense but martin was not armed. demonstrators, lawmakers, other leaders who say the shooting was racially motivated are calling on authorities to at least arrest zimmerman and martin's parents say they are honored by the outpouring of support that they've gotten around the country but they're still troubled that their son's shooter is free. >> they decided on the scene to be the judge and jury and i just want this guy arrested and so he can be brought to justice. federal agents are now assigned to the case and a grand jury will be seated next month to launch a new investigation into zimmerman, who has ties to our area. jane watrel is live in manassas with morn
