that. and in her name i'm going to fight until zimmerman meets justice in the courtroom. >> from al sharpton in florida to hundreds of local students holding up skittles, demanding justice in the trayvon martin case. good evening. i'm wendy rieger, in for dorene. >> and i'm jim vance. a rally initially planned for only 400 people drew thousands of people to sanford, florida tonight. and now leaders both in and out of that city are responding to calls for action in the killing of 17-year-old trayvon martin. today the police chief of sanford announced that he is temporarily stepping down. city leaders will allow the reverend al sharpton and martin's parents to have the floor during a council meeting on monday. and the governor of florida appointed a new prosecutor to investigate why and how an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain. but the lack of an arrest in this case continues to outrage people all over the country

captain george zimmerman called 911, saying trayvon looked suspicious. zimmerman, who is hispanic, fatally shot the teen, claiming self-defense. police let him go. students say he racially profiled trayvon and killed him. >> i'm wearing this black hoodie with skittles. do i look suspicious? >> reporter: this evening sanford's police chief announced he's temporarily stepping down while the fbi and the department of justice investigate. >> while i stand by the sanford police department, its personnel, and the investigation that was conducted in regards to the trayvon martin case, it is apparent that my involvement in this matter is overshadowing the process. >> it needs to be investigated much further. >> reporter: back out here live at howard university, students will protest this saturday at freedom plaza. live here in northwest d.c., i'm shimari stone, news 4. tonight police went door to door 24 hours after a female realtor was attacked in a home. news 4's jackie bensen joins us. she's live in suitland, maryland. jackie? >> reporter: wendy, police

learned tonight that a second car pulled up here at this home after the realtor did. neighbors thought it was just someone she was showing the house to. prince george's county police detectives went door to door and handed out flyers to people in the 2300 block of du pont avenue in the suitland area. they want to know if anyone saw the man who entered an empty home while a real estate agent was inside. police say he tried to sexually assault her but she fought him off and he ran away. >> around 7:30 last night if anyone in the area saw someone that looked out of place or was acting suspicious, please call us. >> reporter: there are only about a dozen homes on the quiet street. most neighbors were unaware of the incident until detectives returned to the scene this evening. >> everybody's shocked, scared that something like this would happen. you know, when it happened, nobody had, you know, noticed anything.

they're just thinking, oh, you know, somebody coming to look at the house. >> reporter: detectives got their hopes up tonight when they learned the next-door neighbors had a security camera system, but they checked with them and found that the camera does not record. reporting live in suitland, jackie bensen, news 4. >> news 4 has learned the d.c. police have a lot of unanswered questions about a stabbing this morning of a woman who was eight months pregnant. the baby boy was delivered at the hospital and then died. the baby was named kuron rashad hunt. it happened about 2:30 this morning in the 4200 block of 9th street southeast. a neighbor says the 31-year-old mother banged on her door, screaming "i've been stabbed, please help me." another neighbor tried to help. >> we just tried to keep her calm, you know, not more concerned about ourselves. there was so much blood everywhere. >> sources say the mother told police an assailant broke into her apartment. but detectives say they found no sign of any forced entry.

the woman also told police her three older children slept through the attack in a nearby bedroom. we have an update on the triple stabbing that we first told you about last night. today d.c. police arrested a young female. three women were stabbed near trinity university on rhode island avenue. police say the attack happened after an argument and all of the victims are expected to survive. the coroner's office in los angeles is classifying whitney houston's death as an accident. however, whitney houston apparently used cocaine before she took a bath in a hotel in los angeles six weeks ago. stephanie staunton reports. >> reporter: troubled pop star whitney houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub with cocaine and heart disease as contributing factors in her death. the l.a. county coroner released the autopsy findings late thursday, ending weeks of speculation as to what killed the 48 years singer. >> we know that when she slipped under the water she was still alive. we have evidence of drowning.

so there was water in the lungs. so that substantiates that finding. >> reporter: houston's body was found submerged in a bathtub by one of her staff members at the beverly hilton hotel on saturday february 11th, one day before the grammys. >> they found her unresponsive. they attempted life-saving resuscitation measures. unfortunately, they were not successful. >> reporter: the coroner's report found no evidence of foul play but did indicate results consistent with chronic cocaine use. the findings also showed marijuana, xanax, the muscle relaxant flexeril, and benadryl in her system. but they did not contribute to her death. houston had planned to attend clive davis's pre-grammy party the night she died. her death shocked and saddened the world. houston leaves behind daughter bobbi kristina and a musical legacy that will forever be remembered. stephanie stanton, nbc news, los angeles. a traffic alert for the morning rush in montgomery county. there's going to be an anti-terrorism exercise at walter reed medical center. that is expected to cause some

delays tomorrow in bethesda. officials at walter reed say nobody outside of the campus is going to see anything out of the ordinary. but there will be increased security at the entrance gates. and that could back up traffic on those surrounding roads. mayor vincent gray wants the skins to move their practice facility back into the district. tonight the mayor spoke to a crowd on capitol hill, a crowd of about 200 people tonight. the mayor wants the team to build a training facility on land near rfk stadium. he says it could boost the local economy and tourism. critics, though, say the 30 acres would be better used for housing or neighborhood improvements. >> the most important issue is how do we do something that we think will benefit the district of columbia, all eight wards, all 618,000 people? >> he says there have been no official talks with the team and it will be years before anything could happen. oh, we are expecting a weekend washout. so we may have to kiss our

little cherry blossoms good-bye, doug. >> well, the good news is you've got to get out there tomorrow because i am expecting another great day tomorrow. out there right now not a whole lot going on in a pretty nice night, but you may notice a couple of flashes in the sky. that's because we have a thunderstorm right now, down toward southern faulkner county making its way toward culpeper county. right now just to the east of culpeper. but a lot of lightning associated with this storm and also a couple of other showers in through stafford county. these were all moving down to the south. the rest of us will remain on the dry side. our issue tonight and into tomorrow morning could be some fog. but then the big changes come in. after a great day tomorrow, this huge storm off to the west will finally move our way. it's not going to leave anytime soon, either. it will affect your entire weekend. i'll show you how coming up in just a minute. >> thanks, doug. the man suspected of killing seven people in france is on america's no-fly list. a u.s. counterterrorism official says mohammed merah was among a group of known suspected

terrorists. merah was killed today in a gun battle with french police. during that standoff he admitted to shooting three jewish children, a rabbi, and three french paratroopers. tonight, investigators are studying video found in merah's apartment. they're hoping it will help them to determine whether he had any accomplices. it is official. ken kucinelli o'officially filed papers today to run for governor of virginia. in his statement he called his current role as attorney general there as the most rewarding and fulfilling position he's ever held. he says he wants to continue the work he's done so far. he will challenge current lieutenant governor bill bolling for the gop nomination. still to come tonight, some dramatic video released of a u.s. military helicopter crash-landing. seriously. the class at a virginia store that has some women on the wait list for months. we'll tell you about a

this video shows the moments before a u.s. army helicopter went down in afghanistan. it happened last month at a u.s. outpost near the pakistani border. the chopper can be seen flying very low before bouncing off the ground and spinning around. it narrowly missed several people standing nearby. nobody inside the chopper or on the ground was injured. the army's investigating how it all happened.

well, tide has become the gold standard for thieves. and tonight a barbershop is busted in prince george's county. today detectives raided nouveau hair on new hampshire avenue in chillum, maryland. they found stolen tide detergent along with dozens of bottles of dove beauty wash and other stolen goods. police arrested four men at the shop, charging them with theft, and more arrests are on the way. some controversy tonight over a curbside ad outside a sex shop on king street in old town alexandria. the store's called lotus bloom. it has a sign that advertises a class instruction in a certain intimate act. some have complained that the sign is not appropriate for kids and some others. the store owner says they need to advertise because people don't know the store offers classes. the class is quite popular. the next session is sold out. with a waiting list from january. and another grocery chain is getting rid of the filler known as pink slime. today giant foods said its

stores will no longer purchase fresh ground beef that contains pink slime. the companies that own safeway, shopper's food warehouse, and food lion already said they're doing the same. pink slime is a low-cost additive that's typically treated with ammonia to kill bacteria in meat. the government has deemed it safe for the past 20 years, but recently critics have raised concerns that it could harbor e. coli and salmonella. >> a woman in colorado who bragged about getting out of jury duty is going to find herself on the other side of the courtroom now. she called a radio show to admit that she tricked the judge. >> hello. i just want to make a confession. and i didn't want to do jury duty. i had too much on my platter. >> the woman's name is susan cole. she told a radio program she went to court wearing hair rollers, reindeer socks, and mismatched shoes. then she said she had a mental illness. the judge dismissed her from jury duty. but it turns out the judge was listening to that show at the

time. now the woman has been charged with two felony counts. despite her confession, cole says she actually really does have a history of mental illness. legal experts say it's going to be really tough to defend her. >> they threw me in the mental institution and kept me there for five days. >> the defense will have to show that she did not knowingly lie about a material fact. >> the woman is charged with perjury and attempting to influence a public servant. we're under an hour away from the midnight screening of "the hunger games." these people are wait hg in line at the uptown theater in cleveland park. people are lined up across the country right now to see this movie. it's based on a wildly popular book series that tells the story of a futuristic society in which teenagers are forced to fight to the death on television. nice night to wait outside. >> yeah, it is. >> there you go. >> but we have one more day, and then boom. >> and then boom. yeah, that's pretty much exactly how you can say it. we have seen two weeks of some

fantastic weather. maybe some of the best march weather ever. if march ended today, it would officially be the warmest march ever in our history. and we've had some cold marches out there. this march, however, pretty good so far. it's going to get even better during the day tomorrow. outside right now it is simply gorgeous all across the area. we are dealing with nice warm temperatures at this time of the night. there is one lone thunderstorm down to the south. we'll talk about that in just a second. but first off, yet another day above average. 76 degrees. the high temperature today. the average high is 57. the low was 59. so the low was above the average high. and yes, 12 days in a row above average now, moving on toward two weeks. i think we'll get there as we make our way through friday and saturday. that would be officially 14 days two, weeks. 81 degrees. that was the high today in frederick, maryland. 84 in culpeper. 83 in fredricksburg. 78 actually in the district at the airport. and 69 in annapolis. i'm going to revise those numbers just a little bit. but temperatures were way up there.

and i think they're going you c warmer during the day tomorrow with a little bit more sunshine. out there right now 66 degrees. that dew point is 60. our humidity is at 81%. you can feel it when you step outside. and as these two numbers get closer, i do expect to see some fog as we move on through the overnight hours. some of that fog could be dense. 64 in leesburg right now. 69 in fredricksburg. and 68 in patuxen river. if these were high temperatures during the afternoon, you'd be saying hey, that's not a bad day at all. but it's 11:00 at night and we're still dealing with numbers like that. not a whole lot going on on storm 4 radar but you can see this area of storminess right on down to the south here making its way through portions of cumberland county right now. right around richardsville, down around flat run just to the west of fredricksburg. a lot of lightning earlier. starting to die out just a little bit. but i would be surprised if you were seeing lightning around the area and also hearing some thunder. not severe this storm. it will continue to make its way down to the south and east. all that happening around this

guy. and look at this circulation going all the way from the gulf all the way up toward canada back down into the rockies and back type the central plains. this is a monster of a storm. and that fetch out of the gulf of mexico is going to make its way, our way just in time for the weekend unfortunately. it is going to be a very rainy weekend. if you have plans coming up over the next couple of days, tomorrow is going to be the day to get things done outdoors because i'm expecting a beautiful day. plenty of sunshine after the morning clouds. we'll see that sunshine probably by around 11:00, 12:00 tomorrow morning. very, very warm. maybe the warmest day we've seen so far this year. and then sunday that boundary with the rain likely friday night into the day on saturday. this area of low pressure moves slowly niceó more rain all day on sunday. and maybe a cold chilly rain with temperatures in the low to mid 50s in some locations sunday is not looking to be very nice at all. tomorrow morning areas of fog, some of that will be dense. temperatures 50 to about 58 degrees. then tomorrow afternoon we'll see clouds a lot

john wall watching, said oh, man, i can't believe it. roy hibbert is pumped, winning in the house he used to play his college ball in. we've been hearing the talk all week that if the colts take robert griffin iii in the first pick of the nfl draft then they wouldn't take andrew luck. well, he's only the guy considered to be the best quarterback in the country two years in a row. so that would be okay if the redskins ended up with him. today the redskins brass in palo alto, california to watch luck's pro day. the former stanford star impressed, just like rg3 did yesterday, despite performing in less than ideal conditions. the consensus seems to be that rg3 has a slightly stronger arm, but the colts will still likely select luck, which would lead the redskins, of course, to select robert griffin iii. and you can see that he has a pretty good arm there. >> absolutely. >> you've got to catch that ball. >> he threw 50 passes today. he completed 47. two of them were dropped. there's no defense out there. but he's p

a cat up in boston is proving cats do land on their feet even from extreme heights. this is sugar. take a look at her. she fell out of her owner's 19th-story window. and by what some would call a miracle she landed on a two by-two-foot patch of grass with concrete all around it and she only suffered some minor bruising on her lungs. otherwise, she's doing great. i mean, that's a current picture
