this answer. it turns out there is a new rule that went into effect in maryland at the beginning of this year. now there are low lead requirements for any appliance that's used to supply cooking or drinking water. that means that any new installation or repairs done in maryland to parts that convey cooking or drinking water must comply with these new low lead standards. unfortunately, that does mean that a repair or installation is going to cost 10% to 30% more than a plumbing job and the low lead requirement is part of a federal standard that is expected to go into effect in 2014 but maryland's is in effect now. >> 10% to 30%. >> more. >> wow. >> our next question comes from nicole here in the district. she wants to know what's the difference between whole grain, multi grain, and whole wheat? >> she is trying to eat right. the food and drug administration and they say whole grains have many health benefits including lowering your risk of heart

disease. a whole grain includes the entire grain kernel which consists of the bran, germ, and the endosperm. whole wheat is a type of whole grain. other examples include oatmeal and brown rice. when parts of the kernel are removed, though, you end up with a refined grain, which has fewer nutrients. some examples are white flour and white rice. the word multi grain simply means more than one grain was used in a product. however, the grains are not necessarily whole in that case. if you're trying to add more whole grain to your diet look for foods that show the word whole grain listed first on the ingredient list. that way you know the majority of the product is made with a whole grain. >> all bread is not created equal. our last question comes from jeff in fair oaks, virginia. jeff wants to know how long the battery or chip in a water pitcher filter normally lasts. >> we spoke with the water filtration company brita for this answer and it says one brita filter can filter out the equivalent of about 40 gallons

of water. after that an indicator will go off letting you know the filter needs to be changed. the average consumer needs to change the filter about every two months and that indicator battery typically lasts more than five years. after that you may need to buy a new battery or put in a whole new pitcher. if you have a question you'd like us to consider for ask liz as always send it to ask liz at nbc washington.com and also connect with me on twitter. just search liz crenshaw. on facebook by searching liz crenshaw's consumer watch. now, coming up on ask liz on news 4 at 5:00 tonight are there rent control laws in our area? where did all the excedrin go? and how do you dispose of old kitchen knives you don't want anymore? find out at 5:00. >> oh, good question. >> yeah. where did all the knives go? >> i have all these knives and i don't want to put them in the trash can. >> i'll see you at 5:00. >> thank you. coming up on news 4 at 4:00, no hugs allowed. school officials make a new rule that has lots of students and
