hello, everyone. thank you for starting your weekend with us. >> it is saturday march 24th. welcome to news4 today. and i guess we can say right now it's the calm before the storm. we are expecting wet weather to move in. >> we are and welcome. it's early on a saturday. >> it is early. i'm not used to getting up early at this time. >> he wasn't sure what day it was. but it is the weekend. you're still waking up getting the coffee. lo . >> we need the rain. we're behind in rainfall. so we need to be playing catch-up here.

man has it been toasty warm. it would be hard to guess it's the end of march here. feels like june around here. made it into the 80s yesterday. unprecedented. so far the warmest march on record. we're not close to first place. we're way out in front of it right now. so warm we're actually above aempbl even if this were the month of april. yeah. crazy weather. 62 already in washington. 57 now in gathersburg. showers moving northbound. you folks near annapolis, be on the lookout there. and there's more rain across parts of central virginia. so finally a little chance for us playing catch-up. and these are the kind of rain showers that will take most if not all of the pollen out of the air. it's been oppressively bad pollen here thanks to the mild

weather. showery weather for your weekend. but muggy. almost a hint of humidity outside. upper 60s and low 70s today. keep your umbrellas handy today and tomorrow. i think the pulg of the rain is today, but that being said we will have another chance for rain drops to land. talk about that in just few more minutes. for now keep the umbrellas ready to go for your weekend. and today hundreds of d.c. community members will rally in response to the shooting death of an unarmed teen in florida. a so-called justice rally's being held at freedom plaza from 2:00 to 4:00 this afternoon. participants plan to wear hoodies and carry bags of skittles in honor of trayvon martin. martin was killed nearly a month ago while walking back to his dad's house holding an iced tea and those skittles. george zimmerman spotted trayvon dressed in a hoodie and called 911 saying he looked suspicious.

moments later he shot trayvon in the chest claiming self-defense. he has not been arrested. >> what do you want? >> justice! >> what do we want? >> justice! >> yesterday members of howard university joined together for a similar rally. participants held candles, passed out skittles to remember trayvon. those say it is a tragedy that should have never happened. >> george zimmerman got it wrong when he stereotyped trayvon martin because he comes from a good family and he was innocent, just simply passing through a gated community. >> the justice department has launched an investigation into trayvon's death. a florida man is behind bars this morning for threatening to -- john stewart was arrested after sending a profanity laced e-mail to sanford police chief

bill lee jr. stewart apparently sent the e-mail with the subject line coming after you. and said that lee and his family should be hunted down and killed. chief lee temporarily stepped down from his position thursday after receiving a vote of no confidence from city commissioners. it's official. the u.s. soldier accused of killing 17 afghan civilians earlier this month has been charged with murder. but this morning the attorney for staff sergeant robert bales is questioning whether the government even has a case. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: staff sergeant robert bales officially charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other offenses related to the bloody rampage targeting afghan children, women, and men. >> this case is still under investigation. so what we saw most recently was the first step in a long

process. >> reporter: bales could face the death penalty. his attorney is focused on the evidence or lack of it. >> there's no dna. there's no ballistics we know of. in most cases there's csi, ballistics, confessions. which there isn't. it's interesting how the government proves this case. >> reporter: bales is being held at fort leavenworth, kansas. his case has raised troubling questions. he served three tours in iraq and suffered a head injury. >> if i told you some of the stoirs, you wouldn't be able to put it on the air. >> reporter: meanwhile the u.s. military is making its case in a crime that has shaken two countries. appears to be laying the case for a post-traumatic stress defense. but first lawyers have to prove his client was responsible. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. now to decision 2012 where

early voting starts today in maryland. maryland's republican primary is not until april 3rd, but voters can get a head start from today through march 29th. there are specific early voting centers. tomorrow the voting centers will be open from noon until 6:00. for a list of early voting centers, head to nbcwashington.com and search the key words early voting. meanwhile, the polls will soon open in louisiana for their presidential primaries today. yesterday mitt romney visited the city of sheave po-- shreveport. he commented on the trayvon martin shooting calling it a tragedy and unnecessary. rick santorum was also in louisiana at a firing range and back tracked on comments he made earlier in the week. the former senator said voters

should support president obama over mitt romney. yesterday he said that he would support the republican nominee over the president no matter who it is. after firing off a few rounds, santorum turned his sights back on romney saying he had no true core. >> it's the reason he hasn't been able to seal the deal in these primaries. because he's not giving the republicans a clear vision. then we hear this week the etch-a-sketch which is i'll say what i have to win the election and say what i have to say the next election. god knows what he'll do if he does win. >> and there was a bit of controversy at his event yesterday. at the firing range a woman yelled out pretend it's obama. secret service is trying to find that woman. at least one company can say this nasty election cycle has increased business. etch-a-sketch.

they've seen sales boom. the aide said the campaign can shake it up and start all over again. they have reaped benefits. downloads of its app have tripled since that comment. gamblers are feeling lucky in maryland. yesterday the state budget and gaming commission allows table games like blackjack in maryland casinos. the bill will also create a new casino at national harbor. the gaming expansion bill now goes to the full state senate. a traffic alert if you are traveling in northern virginia this weekend. you'll want to avoid a section of route 50. it'll be shut down for bridge demolition. westbound 50 in arlington will be closed between courthouse road and tenth street. crews will be taking down the roads. those closures start at 8:00

this morning we are hearing from the families of two teenagers killed in a horrific crash in chevy chase. cousins died after this toyota echo they were riding in burst into flames. police say moments earlier an officer spotted the car and discovered it was stolen. the car then sped off down

connecticut avenue and crash z in chevy chase circle. >> he put his life on the line for my grandson and for the other boy. and he was trying to save the rest of them but he couldn't. >> i can't even talk. i don't know. words can't describe right now. >> the driver of the car 16-year-old raynard osmond is still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the officer that tried to pull the teens from the cars is still recovering. videos showing a school fight between a parent and a student in howard county has more than 850,000 views online and started with a food fight. this is from long reach high school on wednesday. school officials say a parent showed up on campus and attacked

night. it was too late to move the space station, so the six astronauts were forced to take shelter in do space capsules. this morning it made its closest run. it's the first time in 12 years astronauts have had to seek shelter from debris. >> out of all that space up there. i mean, the chances. >> a lot of the satellites, they put them up into orbit which means there's a place about 22,000 miles up and just leave it in orbit. >> geosynchronized orbit? >> this is a huge distraction from the weekend forecast which includes the chance of rain. don't go away. ♪

believe the cherry blossoms' peak bloom could be over. thousands descended to enjoy the weather and blossoms. the warm weather made the peak bloom season ahead of usual. the original was tuesday the 20th. even if you can't get down this weekend, don't worry. the cherry blossom festival runs through april 27th. who knows if there's anything at that point. >> they'll watch the dogwoods by then. >> they're not as pretty. >> the problem is they don't have any around the basin. they went to the trouble of putting 3700 cherry trees around the basin. they look great. just don't last. >> i have a girlfriend coming in from california to see the blossoms this week. >> this week? she coming in today? >> no. in a couple days. i know. i'm not going to tell her.

>> outside there's no doubt about it. mild weather has continued to be more the rule than the exception through the month of march. you know, this march now we are 12 degrees warmer than average for the month of march. number one warmest march on record already in the bag. almost no matter what happens between now and the 31st of march, we're so far out in front for first place now that it seems unlikely we will fall back into second place. on a saturday morning it's cloudy outside. and there are rain drops on the radar of all things. haven't had to worry about rain on the weekend in the last couple months. mostly cloudy but really humid outside. 62 degrees our current temperature. dew point temperatures flirting with 60 degrees already. so it really does feel a lot more like early summer than late springtime. 57 gatheresburg. 61 towards front royal. cherry blossoms now are going to be passing peak very, very

across western virginia. it is inching in our direction. keep in mind you're going to need your umbrellas on and off today. any chance for organized -- stay to the south today. organized severe weather. this area of low pressure is cut off from the main jet stream. any time it wobbles around it's problematic for the forecast. a break or two of showers. rumbles of thunder then back to the sun. you know the routine in the springtime. cloudy and mild and humid. one or two strong thorms can't ruled out. high today upper 60s and low o 70s. cloudy, a touch cooler tomorrow. most everybody flirting with 70 today. should stay in the 60s tomorrow and one or two rumbles out of the question on sunday. we'll have a lot in the way of thunderstorm chances today and not tomorrow. keep the umbrellas around.

welcome to news4 today. i'm richard jordan. >> and i'm angie goff. here's some of the top stories we're following this morning. hundreds of members of the d.c. community are expected to rally today in support of an unarmed florida teen shot by a neighborhood watch captain. a so-called justice rally is being held at freedom plaza from 2:00 to 4:00 this afternoon.

participants plan to wear hoodies in honor of 17-year-old trayvon martin. the u.s. soldier accused of killing afghan civilians in a shooting rampage has been charged. robert bales faces 17 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder. bales could face the death penalty. voters go to the polls today in louisiana. 20 of the state's 46 delegates are up for grabs today down in the bayou. mitt romney holds a commanding lead over rick santorum of close to 300 more delegates. after today the next contests are in maryland and wisconsin. prince george county police are looking for a suspect that attacked and sexually assaulted a realtor. it happened wednesday even along dupont avenue in suitland. darcy spencer has the story along with a warning for neighbors in that area. >> i can only stress safety,

safety, safety. >> reporter: alice is disturbed by the fact that a realtor was sexually assaulted in the basement. >> we stress you keep a charged cell phone with you at all times. trust your instincts. >> reporter: it happened in the 2300 block of dupont avenue in suitland. the home was supposed to be vacant. the realtor was surprised by her attacker. >> was there any sign the home had been broken into? >> not that i'm aware of. >> no idea how this guy got in the house? >> no idea. >> reporter: the victim was able to fight the man off. he remains at large. >> hue do you feel about about a realtor getting a house ready and attacked in the basement? >> people do some crazy things. like, why? >> reporter: this street is off

the beaten path. we counted a dozen homes on the block. you can see here it dead ends into a wooded area. the home has no for sale sign in the yard, no lock box on the door. neighbors say the residents of the home moved out over the last few weeks. many are left wondering how this could have happened. >> are you taking any precautions? >> what can you do? if somebody actually really wants to come in, you know, it's going to be unexpected. it's going to be a time you're not looking for it. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. >> a neighbor has a video surveillance system, but unfortunately it cannot record. police only have a vague description of the attacker. the man who killed the former d.c. council intern will spend more than three decades behind bars. omar cotton received a sentence of 36 years in prison for killing sutton two years ago. sutton was the intern of brown.

sutton refeudsed to give cotton's girlfriend a ride to work. his body was found on mother's day of 2010. the man who set fire to a d.c. club will spend an additional 35 years behind bars. graur is in prison for assaults the manager of good guys in november 2007. he then set fire to the club leaving the manager with severe burns to his body. when he died, grire was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison. his second sentence will begin after his first one ends. right now president obama is on his way to south korea. he and more than 50 other world leaders are meeting to discuss how to keep nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists. the visit comes as tensions rise between the u.s. and north

korea. the u.s. had planned to offer food aid to the country but north korea is planning a rocket launch that would scrap that plan. the president's first stop will be the dematerialized zone separating north and south korea. all of mexico is abuzz as pope benedict makes his first trip to the country since becoming pontiff. he told the crowd mexico should stop what he called the idolatry of money. mexican president felipe calderon called the pope's visit a momentous visit. pope benedict will travel to cuba on monday. cuba is putting together the finishing touches for when the pope visits monday. it will be quite different than when his predecessor visited. he pope is expected to talk about the importance of faith

and human dignity. human being rights activists are hoping he will talk about political rights in the communist nation. so it appears that even batman needs the proper license plates for his car. montgomery county police pulled over the caped crusader on route 29. nice car there. apparently his bat mobile didn't have tags. just the green emblem. officers did not say if batman was charged. they did not reveal his true identity. >> never reveal his true identity. if you happen to be around for a shower of cash on 270 an picked up and any of the money, police would like it back this morning. coins and bills and amounts up to $50 spilled on to the road. the two bags were holding more than $5,000. some people pulled over and grabbed fistfuls of crash. maryland state police want anyone who took the money to return it.

they say they won't charge anyone with a crime. students may not have gotten many snow days this year, but that could mean an early summer. officials are thinking of ending classes two days early. that mans the last day would be june 15th instead of june 19th. the county has used only one of its three allotted snow days and that was from flooding from rain in september. a fairfax county school teacher is in hot water for a school assignment. told students to research the republican presidential candidates and find each one's weaknesses. parents began complaining about the project saying it favored one political party. the principal agreed asking the teacher to revise the assignment for future use. >> that if he were to give this assignment again, give the kids the opportunity to pick the candidate of their choice. do some research off either

demand passwords from job applicants. they have threatened to take legal action. documented several cases of job applicants that were asked at the interview table asked to reveal their facebook passwords for a background check. one of the leading metropolitans in the nation to find a job. the unemployment rate for the region was 5.7%. which was actually up from december. that may be in part to the district's unemployment rate which rose back above 10% in january. minneapolis and oklahoma city tide for second. las vegas has the highest jobless rate at more than 13%. >> then we have the job fair going on in fast fax county today from 10:00 to 2:00. >> hopefully people find good

a midwest town is recovering from yet another tornado this morning. a twister touched down in the louisville, kentucky, area yesterday afternoon destroying one home and knocking another from its foundation. the national weather service says the tornado was 50 yards wide but have not determined how strong it was just yet. no injuries have been reported there. so tornado season is upon us. >> no doubt. it's been a very unusually busy tornado season already. the month of march way ahead of average. about 400% of average in march for severe weather outbreak. and what's more amazing is that it's happening in louisville, kentucky, and southern ohio. places way further north.

typically the severe weather is typically further down to the south this time of year. that's normally where we expect to find it this time of year. not in our year without any winter and year with early summer showing up way ahead of schedule. another 80 degree day down into the books yesterday. 8 3 at national airport. the only reason we didn't tie a record was because the record high yesterday was over 90 degrees. yeah. our earliest 90 on record. 90 degrees, march 22nd, 1907. that's one warm weather record that will actually stand for another year. but man is it humid outside on your saturday morning. overcast, 62 degrees now in washington. 62 degrees now up in martinsburg, west virginia. cherly blos skoms are quickly now moving past their peak blooming period. i think today and tomorrow kind

of sort of maybe that's the end of the peak. there's already a lot of green leaves visible inside of all the puppy white flower blossoms. peak is defined at 70% or more in bloom. rain showers today, tomorrow and wind b coming up into monday. i think that's all she wrote for the blossoms. there are a line of showers with some rumbles of thunder now from indianapolis up towards columbia, maryland. had a little rain about 15 minutes ago. had rumbles in montgomery county as well. that's all gone for now. but there's a whole lot more rain just down to our west and southwest. this is all lifting in our direction. so it's not going to rain every minute today and tomorrow. but rain chances are in the forecast for today and tomorrow. and showers will last on and off far couple hours. it'll be dry for a bit. might even see a break of sunshine after the first round of rain. before more rain showers put in. and occasional rumbles as well with all the humidity around today. the main area of low pressure is sort of wandering around.

almost everyone these days has a cell phone. and that means you're a whole lot more likely to lose it. a new study by the mobile security firm lookout shows last year around $30 billion worth of cell phones were lost by americans alone. on average consumers lose their phones about once a year. and the study also showed that philadelphiians were most likely to lose their cell phone. people lost their devices at the usual locations like restaurants, bars, and their offices. be careful late at night. the number of cell phones that disappear happens between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. >> wonder why that is. it's been a little more than 24 hours since "the hunger games" hit theaters. already making waves at the box office. the movie pulled in more than $19 million on midnight showings yesterday alone. that's good enough for the
