ticket in town. good evening. i'm chris gordon. it's just a matter of hours before the u.s. supreme court begins hearing three days of heated debate over the president's health care reform. the key questions for the high court are these. should every american be forced to have health insurance, and, if so, what are the government's boundaries of power? news 4's derrick ward has more on how people from across the country want to hear those answers in person by landing a front row seat to history. >> reporter: the line started before dawn. way before dawn. >> we got here around 3:00 in the morning. and we've been last in line for eight hours now. >> three hours after the watered loun health care law limped through congress to be signed by the president and after a number of lower court battles over its constitutionality, opponents and advocates will get their day in court. actually three days of arguments are planned on one of the most controversial and politically charged issues to come before the high court in a number of

years. the challenge comes from 26 states. those who plan to see the sessions in person have a number of reasons for coming. >> i'm more here today less about my own political beliefs and more just to see it all go down in history. >> reporter: but there are at least two people in line here who have more than an academic interest in the arguments and ultimate decision. kathy mcclure came all the way from georgia to witness the proceedings. she's the mother two of chronically ill adult children. >> i have a son who is 29. he has type 1 diabetes and i have a daughter, 27, who has epilepsy. they were diagnosed as teenagers. so our family for years has had to deal with insurance issues and paying -- i mean seriously exorbitant premiums. so -- and i fear for their future. >> reporter: while monica writes a blog on the supreme court, she also has a more personal interest in the issue at hand. two sisters without health care. >> they are hard working. they have a job but their

company doesn't offer it. and this law is incredibly important. >> reporter: as it is to some 30 million americans without health care that the act promises to cover. and to the opponents who see it as too expensive or too socialist. it will be a total of six hours for those on both sides to make their respective cases. derrick ward, news 4. arguments are expected to begin at 10:00 tomorrow morning and a decision could come at any time after the three days of those hearings. former vice president dick cheney remains in intensive care tonight after undergoing a heart transplant. the 71-year-old had surgery yesterday at a nova fairfax hospital in falls church. cheney had been on a waiting list for nearly two years. he suffered from congestive heart failure and had five heart attacks starting at the age of 37. mr. cheney will now have to take daily medication to prevent rejection of his new organ. the parents of trayvon martin will speak publicly

tomorrow in sanford, florida, at a city council sponsored town hall meeting there. sanford officials are calling for civility and calm as outrage grows over the killing of the teen by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman who has not been charged and claims self-defense. dozens of people tonight gathered to pray in sanford, florida, where the shooting occurred last month. 17-year-old trayvon martin was wearing a hoodie, unarmed, walking back into a gated community from a convenience store with candy and iced tea. the neighborhood watch captain, george zimmerman, says he shot martin in self-defense. tonight, that community is praying for peace. >> we got to unify. we've got to come together as a family. black, white, orange, green, purple or whatever. we are all one family here in the city of sanford. >> this, to me, this is what it's all about. it's about pulling our community together in the wake of an absolute tragedy.

>> no, it's not all right. >> reporter: clergy and congregants wore hoodies at sunday church services in florida, new york and here in atlanta, georgia. >> we stand in solidarity with the family of trayvon martin, and we stand in support of our children who deserve better than to be stigmatized and stereotyped. >> reporter: stop the violence, save the children. that was reverend jesse jackson's message at macedonia missionary baptist church near orlando. >> the danger of focusing on the hoodie. he didn't get killed because he wore a hoodie. he got killed because he was black. >> reporter: his attorney says he has evidence he acted in self-defense. >> zimmerman suffered a broken nose, an injury, a gash to the bask his head. he claims trayvon martin struck him and he went down. >> reporter: one of zimmerman's friends gave some insight into his state of mind. >> through his family members, i learned that right after the

shooting, he couldn't stop crying. >> reporter: here in d.c., a demonstration is planned for tomorrow at the justice department. supporters of trayvon martin want hate crime charges to be filed against george zimmerman, alleging his motives for the shooting the teen were racist. a 4-year-old child is recovering tonight after getting a foot caught in a metro escalator. it happened just about two hours ago at the dupont circle station. a police spokesperson says cruise stopped the escalator and removed the shoe. the child was taken to the hospital and is getting checked out. well, there's another casualty from yesterday's fire that engumped a west virginia home. today, brian timothy camp was taken off life support at a charleston hospital. making the death toll nine. seven of the victims were young children. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. authorities found a smoke detector in the home, but it was not working.

well, the u.s. has now made payments to the families of the afghan villagers killed and wounded in this month's shooting spree. the families received $50,000 for each of the 17 civilians who died. an additional $11,000 was paid to each person wounded. staff sergeant robert bales is charged with murder in the attack. in an exclusive interview with the "today" show's matt lauer, bales' wife said her husband is a loving dad. >> you said to me awhile ago. when i asked what kind of dad he was, you said he was so involved with his children. he loves children. >> he loves children. he's like a big kid himself. >> and he is accused of killing nine children. >> right. >> innocent children. >> it's unbelievable to me. i have no idea what happened, but he would not -- he loves children. and he would not do that. >> matt's entire interview with karilyn bales airs tomorrow

morning on the "today" show. the idea companies can force job seekers to hand over their social media passwords. they can gain access to all kinds of personal information like race, religion, age, even e-mails and photos. they are troubled by the practice. they want the justice department to launch an investigation to see if it breaks federal employment laws. >> but we believe employers have no right to ask their job applicants for many things. for their house keys, for their diaries. why should they be able to ask them to do the electronic version of the same thing and get their facebook passwords? >> last friday, facebook warned employers not to ask for that information because it violates the company's longstanding policy against sharing passwords. turning to the weather now, the cherry blossoms are mostly gone with the rain.

as we just reported at the top of tonight's newscast, former vice president dick cheney is now recovering from a heart transplant. darcy spencer sat down with a young transplant recipient in arlington who has a message that she wants the world to hear. darcy? >> chris, veronica was born with

a heart condition. so she figured a transplant would be in her future. but she never thought it would be so soon. before her 21st birthday. veronica stumpo is only 21 years old but already is the recipient of a heart transplant. she was born with an enlarged heart. >> my heart just started failing where it got to the point where i couldn't even walk up the stairs. i couldn't breathe, nothing. >> reporter: that happened when she was 20 years old. she was hooked up to a heart pump and was on the waiting list for a new heart for ten months. >> every time your phone rings, you have this anticipation that it's, oh, you know, they found something. they got something for me. any time, even, you know, it sounds horrible, but any time you are like on the road and you see a big car crash you are like, oh, i hope i get a heart soon. >> reporter: her father had the same heart condition. he had also received a heart transplant. the former news 4 photographer passed away in 2009 just a few

months later, his daughter's heart got worse. >> i kind of wish i had him to share my story with and compare and everything. but i guess he's in my heart, too. >> reporter: veronica says it took a few months, but she's back to her normal activities. >> i still hang out with all my friends. i go to concerts. i do the things that normal people do. i just have a big scar. >> one lasting change? all the meds. she's taking about 20 pills a day. >> i take a lot of colorful pills. all my anti-rejection. my steroids. there's stuff just to even ease my stomach from having so many medicines. >> reporter: veronica is studying education at northern virginia community college. and she would like to get the message out that donors are always needed. >> i am grateful. i mean, i wish i didn't have to go through this. but i did. and i feel like it's just made

me so much stronger. >> veronica says she has signed up to be an organ donor herself and hopes more people will become informed about becoming donors as well. and one of the hard parts of doing this story, you and i both were very good friends with her dad. he did not live long enough to help her through this process. >> but he did live many years. he was with us at nbc 4. always taught us lessons, and it appears now, like father, like daughter. >> yeah. >> thanks, darcy. "the hunger games" is cashing in on box office gold. the film rung up $155 million in ticket sales this opening weekend. that is the third best debut ever in terms of revenue. the only films to top that number are last year's "harry potter" finale and 2008's "dark knight." "hunger games" set a revenue record for a nonsequel. well, if you have caught "hunger games" fever, now is your chance to train like a tribute.

washington sports club is offering a hunger games workout. participants don't exactly exercise to the death, but they do compete to the last man or woman standing. and each person or tribute does a few reps of exercises like pita presses, katniss killers and capital crunches. and after they complete a round of each exercise, they get one point. >> the more rounds you have at the end of the game, you win. they become very competitive. and when they become competitive, they realize from the game master that only one life is chosen. and that's the survival of the fittest. >> the "hunger games" workout is being offered at washington sports club in chevy chase on tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. for the next seven weeks. the class is open and free to the public, and we will have more this wednesday on news 4 at 5:00 when we ask, what's your workout? kim, you were laughing because

be drying up south and east of warnton. we have some rain coming down. and all of this is attached to this big upper level low. this is very much like a springtime weather pattern where the air upstairs in the atmosphere is very cold. it caused all that hail yesterday in southwestern virginia. this gamemaker is going to be pulling into the ocean and allow cold air from canada to come down. it's also going to allow some clear chicago is already happening outside and it will be a clear but breezy day tomorrow. so by the morning, we'll have clearing skies and the winds will be picking up out of the north, 5 to 15. in the afternoon, they could be in the 20-mile-an-hour range-plus. the temperatures are still in the 50s. pretty pleasant outside. but tomorrow, we're not going to be as warm as we were the last couple of weeks. and tomorrow night, it's going to be downright cold. we have a freeze watch in effect for monday night into tuesday morning. upper 20s is a possible. frederick county, maryland, you come to mind. we can get to the freezing mark in d.c.

the growing season is well under its way. it's had a head start. if you have a garden with plants, you can go to home improvement stores and get those stakes with the plastic with the little holes in it. my friend tobias on facebook told me this and it definitely helps save some of your plants from a potential frost. i wanted to pass that along to you. and bring those other plants in the pots inside tomorrow night. tomorrow, temperatures are going to rebound. a little cooler to the north. what you'll notice, very busy winds out of the north. a much colder day with those winds. as i mentioned, we have that freeze watch in effect. and tuesday is going to be definitely a cold day. we'll get a warm-up on wednesday from that front. that's when more rain gets here. breezy and cooler tomorrow. low 60s. and then extending the forecast, we're back down in the 50s on tuesday. wednesday, we warm up into the 70s with some showers. and then beyond that, it's pretty nice for the end of the week into the weekend. nothing super warm but nothing
