start here and around the country. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly this evening. today marks a month since the killing of trayvon martin. the 17-year-old was shot by a neighborhood watchman who told police he acted in self-defense. he has not been charged. >> the case has generated rallies across the country with people demanding an arrest. there is one going on right now, a march protest, that is, at the justice department. and there is also a huge rally getting under way in sanford, florida at this hour where the whole case began. that's where martin's family spoke out again today. jay gray has the story. >> reporter: late today new information in the trayvon martin case. revelati revelations that the teenager had been suspended from school after a baggy containing marijuana residue was found in his book bag. >> the only comment that i have right now is that they've killed my son and now they're trying to kill his reputation. >> reporter: supporters call it

a diversion from the real issue here and today on the anniversary of the shooting hundreds gathered at this community forum. >> we'll occupy this town. >> reporter: this evening thousands plan to take part in a rally and meeting with city commissioners pushing for justice for martin as friends of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the teenager are now pushing back. >> he couldn't stop crying for days after the shooting. >> reporter: george zimmerman has been in hiding since the incident a month ago. >> george zimmerman is absolutely not a racist. this is -- whatever happened that night was in self-defense. >> reporter: his attorney and friends say it was martin who initiated the confrontation, wrestling with zimmerman, knocking him to the ground cutting him and breaking his nose before the fatal shot was fired. >> if george zimmerman did have an injured nose or any other injuries it was because he initiated a confrontation. >> the bottom line is there was

a life and death struggle in that instance and someone was going to die. >> reporter: but thousands were demanding an arrest and say no one had to die. >> neighborhood watch is to watch and call the police. now they're calling on police and city leaders to take action. the city manager made a public appeal for calm at this evening city commission meeting which has been moved to the civic center to handle the overflow crowd expected. in sanford, florida, jay gray, news 4. for the first time since the massacre of afghan civilians earlier this month the wife of the soldier accused of doing it is speaking out. keri bales says she doesn't believe her husband was involved in the shootings. staff sergeant bales is accused of shooting 17 afghans including nine children. she says even though his fourth deployment into a war zone was a shock to both of them she believes he was physically and mentally prepared for it and told matt lauer this morning he would never hurt children.

>> you've spoken to him twice on the phone. did you say tweet heart did you do this? >> no. no. >> as spouse wouldn't you want to ask that question? honey, why are they saying these things about you? >> not on a monitored phone call. we couldn't discuss those details. he was -- seemed a bit confused as to where he was and why he was there. >> bales says whatever happened it isn't what it appears to be and nothing will change her mind on her husband's innocence. the supreme court heard a case today in a case that involves a hallmark of president obama's administration, the health care reform law. 26 states are suing to have the law declared unconstitutional and to have it thrown out. this was the first of three days of arguments. steve handelsman is at the supreme court with the latest. >> reporter: outside the high court both sides rallied. backers of obama health care. >> we want all americans to be

able to opt for the health care that they need rather than the health care that they can afford. >> reporter: in a new poll, two-thirds of americans want health care thrown out. >> i believe it violates the fundamental relationship between the government and a citizen. >> reporter: can anything that happens out here, public opinion, affect the rulings in there? justice thomas called this a distraction. three days of oral arguments. today's was on the obama fine for refusing to buy health insurance. is that a tax? conservative justice scalia. >> there is at least some doubt about it. >> reporter: liberal justice ruth bader ginsburg. >> this is not a revenue raising measure. if it's successful, it will -- nobody will pay the penalty.

dropping below freezing and we've got the budding spring flowers to worry about. right? check out the morning temperatures here. you can see we dropped down to about 46 to 55, 57 degrees. manassas to culpepper. that wasn't a big deal at all. today was the 14th day temperatures have been 50 degrees or higher but now a look at all that blue on the map. that is our freeze warning for tonight. that means we've got the potential for several hours to drop below freezing. all those areas shaded in blue. freeze watch off to the east for d.c., prince george's county, anne arundel county, st. mary's, and calvert county. for several hours, perhaps more than three, we could drop below the freezing mark. i think our most critical time period will be between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're at 59 degrees right now. boy, it has been a gusty one today. 38-mile-per-hour wind gusts currently coming through the area. 55 in gaithersburg and only where it's 61 degrees in falls church, 62 right now in stafford and fredericksburg, virginia.

as far as sky cover goes, hardly a cloud to be found. we've got a few clouds down around kentucky but that is about it. so it's clear skies starting the overnight and again quite cold. we'll drop to 45 degrees by 11:00 p.m. and that wind is going to start to lighten up as well. so as far as the forecast goes, with our temperatures here coming up, we've got the cold to talk about. i'll have more details in just a couple minutes. >> all right. thanks, veronica. our weekend rain washed away most of the cherry blossoms over the weekend. thousands of people stood in the rain as the fireworks marked the start of the festival. the peak bloom is already over. however, events are planned for the rest of the festival. for the next six to eight weeks be prepared to see construction cones along maryland's new intercounty connector. police are making repairs to the highway that runs from i-370 in shady grove to i-95 in prince george's county. in the fall inspectors found

premature cracks on four bridges. the affected overpasses are at georgia avenue, emory lane, muncaster mill road and needwood road. the state says there are no immediate safety concerns but they are making repairs as a precaution. the icc will stay open during the repairs. pope benedict has arrived in santiago, cuba for an historic three-day visit, the next stop on his latin american tour. he started in mexico. the pope will celebrate mass tonight in the city's main plaza where he will address the faithful and in a country that until recently has been officially atheist. as nbc's kerry sanders reports, it will all be followed by a key meeting with cuban leaders. >> reporter: the pope arrived here in cuba with what he says is a message of love, hope, and reconciliation, but as he arrives here, he is also criticizing marxism. of course, cuba since 1959 has had a communist government. when he landed here, he met with

president reuel castro. that is the brother, the younger brother of fidel castro, who is the architect of this country's revolution. fidel castro remains in havana. reuel will stay here with the pope. the pope will spend two days here and then travel to havana where he will be with fidel castro. while here, just a short period of time, he is going to begin a mass for we don't know how many thousands will show up. this is perhaps the least catholic nation in latin america. about 10% of the population is considered to be catholic. clearly, based on the number of people who have shown interest in the pope's visit even if they're not catholic, it's an important visit, one that many here say even if they're not catholic, even if they're not religious, they have a faith that somehow this visit here will improve their lives. in santiago, cuba, kerry sanders, nbc news. meanwhile, the life of a

maryland man jailed in cuba hopes the pope's visit will help free her husband. we'll have more on that coming up live on news 4 at 5:30. some medical experts are coming to the defense of former vice president dick cheney who is recovering from heart transplant surry in virginia. cheney underwent the procedure on saturday at inova fairfax hospital in falls church. some are questioning if he got special treatment getting a donor heart considering his age. cheney is 71. however, doctors say under current rules medical need is the top criteria for a transplant not the patient's age. and one doctor said the fact that cheney received the transplant after having five heart attacks and a number of heart procedures over the years shows he did not get any favors. a strong odor coming from a suitcase sent four tsa workers to the hospital in boston today. workers found the suitcase in a bag room at logan airport around 8:00 this morning. it turns out the passenger had

packed away some rodent repellent that was letting off noxious fumes. the tsa workers were treated for eye and throat irritation. no passengers were affected. tebow mania is taking a bite out of the big apple. there was a media circus there today as the new york jets introduced tim tebow as the new backup quarterback. the jets traded with denver for the quarterback. tebow says he is excited about the prospect of playing for new york and just wants to help the team win. >> i'm so honored and humbled to be a jet. i'm so thankful that they wanted me. and i'm so excited about meeting my teammates. i've had the pleasure to meet quite a few already. i'm looking forward to my future as a jet and i'm very, very excited about it. >> some businesses are already cashing in on tebow's popularity. the famed carnegie deli in new york has a sandwich named after tebow now. it weighs more than three pounds and includes roast beef, corn beef, and pass trtrami on white

22-year-old liam amsworth engaged to miley cyrus? >> no it's not true. they're not engaged at all. she says she has been wearing it since november of 2011 so i haven't seen it but it's a topaz and not a diamond. it is on, you know, this finger on the left hand, so i would just say, come on, man. i mean, put it on. you got ten fingers. move it at least to the other side if it fits perfectly on that finger. it perpetuates a lot of chat. i don't know. it seems silly. but this guy is big. he's not in "hunger games" much in the first movie but will be in the second movie a lot. >> let's assume the ring at least has meaning for them. >> listen, billy. simon cowell says he was watching tv at home over the weekend and suddenly he heard this loud crash. what was that all about?

>> all right. let's picture simon. i love this first of all. he is watching himself. on an interview that he taped earlier for the jonathan ross show. so he's home, relaxing, soaking in a little, you know, him time watching himself on tv. here's this loud crash in the bathroom and he runs in there and finds this 29-year-old woman standing there with a brick, simon obviously takes off, you know, tells security, they come back. they find the woman in his walk-in closet hanging out with the brick right there so they apprehend her and security does and then they call the cops and they come. simon said he, you know, through his rep, that he feels sort of relieved today and actually quite lucky because it could have been a gun or a knife instead, you know. i told him, look. be more positive. it also could have been flowers and a massage oil. you don't need to be so negative. simon, he's okay. he's okay. the woman is good. going to be, i think he is probably going to take some legal action but, yeah. kind of scary. >> it was. >> what's up on "access"

celebrated her 70th birthday over the weekend in a star-studded event. the queen of soul is reuniting with one of her musical mentors for a new album. franklin is teaming up with sony music mogul clyde davis who engineered her comeback in the '80s. franklin says there will be new music but they haven't decided which songs yet. she also has other things in the works she'll be performing in california and is currently negotiating a record contract for her grandson. >> actress eva longoria got divorced last year but hasn't given up on love. there are reports her production company is developing a primetime dating show. it's tentatively called "all about love" a group of professional match makers will set up singles with potential mates. the show goes into production next month. titanic film director james cameron completed the world's first solo dive to the deepest known point on the earth last night. he used a specially designed submarine to reach the bottom of the pacific ocean's nariana trench roughly seven miles below

some tender sprichk plants or flowers that take a hit or a little more damage in the counties far out around shenandoah. may look a little peeked by the morning but i think we'll bounce back with the 70-degree high on wednesday. let's talk about it. the cold is coming yourself. those have started making their way up and saying hello. 41 degrees is our recoaverage l. we're down to 36 degrees for an overnight temperature so just a few degrees below the average here for the overnight period. as i said, it'll be the coldest since march 11th since that started. 59 is where we are now. you can see our camera shaking around with winds gusting at 38 miles per hour and a dry wind at 26 miles per hour. in fact some of the highest winds here up in the philadelphia area, 39-mile-per-hour wind gusts. but i just look at the airport delays. none except for newark. those are only running a couple

minutes so nothing major because of the wind today. with high pressure over us we have the clear skies through the overnight, chilly for your evening. look at the temperatures. 55 by 7:00. 49 by 9:00. 45 by 11:00 p.m. sun sets at 7:26. so we've got high pressure over us. that's going to be with us for one more day. bright sunshine tomorrow. we've got the warm front that's going to be moving through on wednesday so temperatures are really going to be bouncing right back up and we'll get a little bit of rain during the afternoon on wednesday. you can see it coming through with that front. it's going to be in and out of here. not quite like the last front. cooling early. breezy. we go from gusty conditions to breezy. your morning will be a cold start indeed so get the coats out for tomorrow morning. for tomorrow afternoon plenty of sunshine. much cooler than we've had but again not that bad. 53 to 57 degrees for a temperature and there you are on wednesday with that warm front

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. rallies in d.c. and florida are helping mark a month since the killing of trayvon martin. the unarmed 17-year-old was shot by a neighborhood watchman in a gated community in sanford, florida. the shooter george zimmerman told police that he shot martin in self-defense and was not arrested. people attending the rallies are asking that zimmerman be charged. >> the first of three days of supreme court arguments on the health care reform law ended before noon today. the justices indicated they believe they can decide this issue during this session rather

than waiting for parts of the law to take effect. pope benedict arrived in cuba a short time ago the next stop in his latin american tour. the pontiff will celebrate an open air mass tonight in santiago and is also scheduled to meet with cuban president reuel castro and possibly his brother long-time cuban leader fidel castro. the pope left mexico this morning after spending the weekend there. and a suggestion from fed chair ben bernanke about the need to keep interest rates low sent stocks soaring today. the dow gained 160 points to close at 13,241. the nasdaq gained 54 points and the s&p 500 gained 19. the fast growing social website called penterest that is getting a lot of attention these days, a site that lets users share pictures they find interesting. >> but some legal eagles are concerned about what the law allows when it comes to pinning photographs on the internet. >> it's all about pinning

pictures online of those things you just happen to find interesting at the moment. brian cooley at c-net uses pizza as an example. >> if i say wow this is the greatest pizza i ever had and i put up a picture of a pizza whether i took it or it comes off the restaurant website, i kind of told you the whole story right there. >> reporter: but as it turns out if the picture of the pizza did indeed come from the restaurant website there might be a problem. >> a lot of this is very unclear. it's very gray. this is a very new technology. it's a brand new social media site now. >> steve eter legal correspondent at "the wall street journal" just wrote an article on copy right laws online and talked to several lawyers to ask whether you could be sued for posting someone else's pictures on pentrest. >> the lawyers i've talked to say probably not. >> because owners of copyright photos probably won't bother provided you aren't trying to profit from the photo but the safest way he says to post pictures anywhere online is to

use only those you took. >> if it's your work, your photo, your content you can feel really comfortable posting that type of material without having to worry. >> it can even be a picture of a picture provided you were the photographer. on its website, pentrest says it respects intellectual property rights of others and expects users to do the same. the site says it will terminate or disable the accounts of users who repeatedly break copyright and intellectual property right rules. and in less than three days rovio says its angry bird space has topped 10 million downloads. rovio shared the milestone through an official angry birds twitter feed. angry birds space was released on thursday. this version of the game transports the birds to outer space where they travel in straight lines and not parabolic arcs as in other games. the cast of birds has also been revamped giving them new

abilities. queen elizabeth is 85 years old and great britain is celebrating the 60th year of her reign but the queen still has the ability to surprise her subjects. the queen and her husband prince phillip did just that on friday. they popped into a wedding in the city of manchester. the queen even knew the names of the bride and groom and where they were planning to have their honeymoon. the newlyweds and their guests were stunned to be clear her royal highness didn't quite crash the wedding. that would be coarse, of course. weeks ago, the bride-to-be heard that the queen would be passing through manchester so she decided to send a wedding invitation to buckingham palace. it was politely declined by the palace. little did the newlyweds know that the queen was planning to surprise the happy couple. a candy lover's dream came to life at a fashion show in portugal over the weekend. these lovely ladies were all walking the run way wearing dresses decorated in chocolate as part of the tenth annual international chocolate festival. this year's show had a disney

theme. the winning designer scored a trip to disneyland, paris. a bill to ban minors from tanning beds in maryland has died in a state senate committee. the bill was sponsored by montgomery county democrat jamie raskin and would have prohibited anyone under 18 from using electronic tanning beds and would have eliminated a provision that allows minors to tan with parental permission. another version of the bill is before the house of delegates but has not yet received a vote. coming up next an app that helps you spring clean your house. >> plus a college student falls out of a sixth floor window and survives. he

your fabric. baked beans sounds good. you click on that tab and it'll tell you how to get it out of your fabric or upholstery or your carpeting. it has all of the instructions that you need right there and let's try -- oh, beets are very tough. pretreat with liquid laundry detergent or prewash stain remover. it has great tips for helping you get stains out. also general house cleaning. let's try computers for example. if you want to clean your computer screen, which i never do. it says never use household glass cleaners. did not know that. on computer monitor screens. instead use a static free product made for cleaning monitor screens. it tells you how to clean all of these items around your house, counter tops, cutting boards, collectibles. there is a whole list there. the other thing i like about this, this app, is the home decor gallery. this is one of my favorite.

three british teenagers are lucky to be alive after they were trapped for five hours in their hot air balloon. the balloon wrapped itself around a high voltage power cable. the 18-year-old pilot and his two passengers suffered minor burns when they crashed into the electric pole. they were left suspended nearly 50 feet above the ground as they waited for the overhead cables to be turned off.

the three balloonists, though, are doing okay. >> authorities at michigan state university say a college student is lucky to be alive. she fell from a sixth floor dorm window over the weekend. friends say the freshman tripped and fell out of the window while playing catch in the room. it had been raining at the time so the lawn beneath her was soft. campus police say that that may have saved her life. it would be soft ground rather than soft grass. the student underwent a couple surgeries. one of her family members said she tested negative for alcohol and drugs. and still ahead on news 4, ten days after a teenager disappeared, the family and rescue crews are not giving up.

the search continues today for a missing california teenager. sierra lamar has now been missing for more than a week. over the weekend her family joined searchers as they combed through the area around her home. kristen dahlgren has the story. >> reporter: on sunday sierra lamar's father steve hiking through canyons and over hills. >> it has to be more than just desperate. >> reporter: he spots a bone from an animal but for a moment fears the worst. >> you go there. it's natural. you know, i have nightmares still. you know, every night. >> now ten days after the petite 15-year-old was last seen for

her family every day brings fresh agony. >> it gets harder and harder but we're hanging in there, you know, we're hopeful. >> reporter: there are vigils almost every night. her friends sporting red chuck taylors the kind sierra liked to wear, her face smiling out from flyers that dot the town, but more than a week since she was last seen getting ready for school the only clues are her cell phone and a bag with her clothes neatly folded inside found on the side of the road within two miles of her house. authorities think they are the same clothes sierra was wearing in this picture she took the morning she disappeared. >> there are county crime lab criminals who will do further testing. we're hoping some further information will be gathered as a result. >> reporter: the fbi searched her mom's house where sierra was last seen and investigators have questioned registered sex offenders in the area. though sierra's father is a registered sex offender officials insist he is not a person of interest. perhaps no one understands the
