with the possible swing justice, anthony kennedy, today, not signaling definite support for the obama health care mandate. court watchers are guess iing tt obama care may be closer now to being declared unconstitutional when the court renders its ruling in a couple months. back to you. >> steve handelsman, thanks. a 13-year-old virginia girl is dead along with her father in an apparent murder suicide. the father is a former fairfax county police sergeant. this happened overnight. pat collins is live with the story. pat? >> reporter: why would a man kill his own daughter in cold blood? that's the question they are trying to answer tonight. police investigating this as a murder suicide. the murder victim believed to be 13-year-old alexis jackson. it's believed she was killed by her own father, an ex-cop who

then turned the gun on himself. that's the theory of the case. police awaiting word from the medical examiner to make it official. >> bang, bang, bang, three times. >> reporter: that's doris. she heard the shots and she was shaken when she found out what happened. for something like this to happen three doors down from your house. >> deaf stating. >> reporter: this vehicle was parked at the home that belonged to the teenagers grandparents. it happened around 1:00 this morning. people here in this bedroom community most upset. >> oh, my goodness. it's terrible. i never heard of something in this nabld. >> reporter: her father identified as 40-year-old john jackson. he lived in this house on summers lane in fairfax county. he was a sergeant from the police department. he served 16 years on the force.

law enforcement sources say alexis lived here with her father. john jackson ran a trash hauling business with his brother who is also a fairfax police lieutenant. alexis mother, it appears lived at her parents at the house where it happened. he was a student at the glasgow middle school. parents of the students affected. what are you going to tell your child? >> that it was a very sad set of circumstances that we don't know all the details but that my son is safe. >> reporter: what's the motive? there's more to be known here. live in fairfax county, pat collins, news 4. >> thank you, pat. the latest now on a developing story out of prince george's county. three people are injured after a shooting and a chase.

it started on riggs road. two men shot in the woods. police located the suspects vehicle in hyattsville. in the vehicle, a baby boy strapped in a car seat. the child is fine. a police officer was injured during the arrest. no word on the where abouts of the charnts of the child. a jetblue airliner made an emergency landing today because one of the pilots suffered apparently what they are calling a medical episode. the flight was headed from new york to vegas. they had to make an emergency landing from amarillo, texas after the pilot started acting erratically. cell phone video of the incident. they say the pilot was disruptive, yelling about a bomb. he was locked out of the cockpit and restrained by some of the passengers. an off-duty pilot took over. the plane was able to land safely. new details today about last

month's deadly confrontation between an unarmed teenager. they come amid growing questions about trayvon martin's growing past and the investigation into the shooting. jay gray is live in sanford, florida. jay? >> reporter: the questions about trayvon martin, concerning his time. the family says it has nothing to do with the case. that, while friends of george zimmerman say there's growing evidence the teenager may have forced his hand the night of the shooting. >> trayvon was our son but trayvon is your son. >> reporter: as the parents join leaders at a hate crime forum in washington. >> everyone is holding the legacy of trayvon and making sure he did not indeed die in vain, just like to say thank you. >> reporter: more details about their son's life before he was shot and killed continue to surface, including reports he

had several brushes with administrators and security at the miami dade high school and was suspended at least three times. that news as friends of george zimmerman continue to insist martin sparked the deadly confrontation striking zimmerman from behind and slamming his head on the concrete. >> what's been released shows it wasn't george who was the aggressor. it shows it was trayvon. >> reporter: they will say it's consistent with the evidence gather gathered. they are concerned about a leak in the case. >> we are looking into the leak. >> the leaks are an extension of some conspiracy on behalf of the police department to exonerate mr. zimmerman for killing unarmed trayvon martin. >> reporter: the 17-year-old had no police record and no history

gasoline. he walked down main street and met several voters there. romney was in virginia last week. santorum and paul are stopping in maryland next tuesday. in virginia, they are going to the polls in a special election to fill a vacant seat on the board. three candidates are on the ballot. the winner will finish out the term. the polls close tonight at 7:00. it was quite chilly out there today. the coldest day in more than a couple weeks. doug is going to tell us things are going to warm up quickly. hey. >> we are going to get into the 70s tomorrow. today, a big temperature swing down. tomorrow, right back up. take a look out there. we were cool today. a high temperature of 55. that's still very nice across the area for mid to late march. a little below average. not that bad with plenty of

finally launched rockets to study the upper level jet stream today. nasa blasted five rockets into the air from the eastern shore of virginia. the rockets will release a chemical into the sphere to form white cloud that is allow scientists and the public to see the winds up there. nasa had been trying to launch the rockets since last week. bad weather delayed the project. pope benedict is in havana now. he will meet privately with president raul castro tonight and celebrate in another open air mass. last night, police arrested a man shouting down with the revolution and other antigovernment slogans before the pope's mass in santiago. the pope is calling for a renewal in that country. today, a top cuban official said there's room for improvements,

but there will not be political change. president obama left south korea earlier today and is expected back at the white house tonight. he was in seoul for a nuclear safety summit. he met with pakistan's prime minister. they have not seen each other since they killed osama bin laden in may. nato killed 24 pakistani soldiers in a friendly fire in november. president obama announced there are strains in the relationship and they agreed to work on it. back home, maryland is a step closer to getting table games. they approved a bill to pave the way to a vegas-style casino. chris gordon has the details. >> reporter: the maryland state senate voted 35-11 in favor of the bill to expand gambling and the revenues it creates to a sixth gaming parlor in the state. it's being actively supported by

the county executive. >> our estimation is that we can get somewhere between 40 to $50 million additional each year in prince george's county at the completion of the sight. >> reporter: the bill must go to the house of delegates. if it passes there, it would have to be ratified in a statewide referendum. prince george's county members are divided over gaming. >> it's a county trying to grow and move in a positive direction. it would move it backward. >> i think the county needs this and other sources of revenue to support the county and the growth of the county. i support gambling in prince george's county. >> i don't see it helping us as people of the county, prince george's county more than it hurts us. it's not the way. >> i think it probably will help bring revenue into the county and provide employment for individuals who needs it.

>> reporter: he says the revenue from table gaming would be shared from the county and state. >> this creates a lot of new jobs. it helps prince george's county and the state. it's another reason the state is going to come in. >> reporter: if the casino is ratified by maryland voters it could stimulate the development almost instantly. chris gordon, news 4. >> the maryland senate also voted about the ref knew slot parlors can keep. they increased it by 8%. whale watchers have a story to tell. it started friday night off baja point. sailors spotted a 30-foot long gray whale tangled in a huge fishing net. rescuers were called in. the sailor name d peter bartholomew agreed to baby sit the whale overnight. the whale, nicknamed bart fought

today. believe it or not, this was only the fourth day of the entire month that was below average. i'm sure you believe that because we have been so warm over the last couple days. itis been extremely warm. today was a cool one. at least it was a cool, sunny day rather than rainy. 45 right now. winds out of the southwest at three miles per hour. temperatures around the region, everybody in the 50s. 52 in gaithersburg. 52 in winchester. plenty of sunshine during the day today. not a cloud in the sky. there are some clouds starting to make their way our way. they are just off to the west. they are high to mid-level cloud that is stream on in here. we'll see a few clouds overnight and early tomorrow morning before more cloudiness makes its way in here. nothing to show on the radar. we are not expecting rain tonight. tomorrow will be different. as you step outside this

evening, we are going to see the sunshine until 7:30 when the sun goes down. chilly temperatures continuing throughout the evening hours. if you are going to be out and about, take the jacket. if you are thinking of picking up the lottery tickets, 363 million dlarls. i'm ready for that. here comes it cold front. it brings a chance of showers, maybe a thunderstorm during the day tomorrow. a good chance, about a 40% chance. not everybody is going to see it. if you do, you could see a couple rumbles of thunder or so. thursday, breezy and behind the system it will feel cooler. still not that bad. temperatures above average on thursday with a high temperature into the low 60s. that with plenty of sunshine on friday we see the sun. the breezy conditions go away. right now, forecasting a fantastic friday. another great friday after last friday's 82, this will be cooler but still nice. let's go through the forecast. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. no worries about the rain.

don't worry about anything other than the jacket you'll need. not a coat, just a jacket. here is the front around 4:00. you can see where the best chance of rain is going to be toward the blue ridge and the mountains. it's the best chance to see the thunderstorms. we could see those across the area. that front will move through here. by thursday morning, around 7:00, we are high and dry again. this will be a quick frontal boundary that moves through. ahead of it, warm air behind it. breezy conditions. this evening, clear, a chilly evening. 45 to 50 degrees as you make your way out and about. that will bring in light winds. tomorrow morning, we see the winds shift a bit. another cool morning but not as cold as this morning. temperatures 37 to 46 degrees in some areas. tomorrow afternoon, partly sunny. late day showers, maybe a thunderstorm, breezy and warmer. 76, going with a 20 degrees temperature improvement. winds tomorrow gusting upwards

announcer: now, from washington's leading news station, this is news 4 at 6:00. a former fairfax county police sergeant and his teenage daughter dead in an apparent murder suicide. police found the bodies of john jackson and alexis jackson in a parks suv overnight. he worked for the fairfax police department 16 years before leaving the department in 2010. today, the state senate approved a measure to allow games in a sixth casino. this paves the way for a

possible vegas style casino. they increase the revenue the slot owners can keep. it's increased by 8%. it will go for a vote in the state house. a challenge in the nation's health care law. they centered on whether the gove government can force people to buy insurance. there's one more day of arguments. a large show of support today for the family of trayvon martin. it came from hundreds of high school and college students here in the district. >> they marched on the white house to push for an arrest. his parents were on capitol hill today. jane watrel has more. >> reporter: several hundred dollar d.c. high school and college students marched to the white house demanding a federal investigation into the death of florida teen trayvon martin. >> he has a personal connection. he's 17, near our age.

>> it's an example of racism in the u.s. >> reporter: there were plenty of people who saw it and joined in. >> i came up here for a white house tour. i happened to see them out here protesting. i wanted to join. >> reporter: the case drew national attention after 911 tapes were released the night george zimmerman shot and killed martin, an unarmed teen. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> we don't need you to. >> reporter: there's a one-minute gap where they don't know what happened. zimmerman told investigators he was returning to his vehicle after losing sight of the teenager when martin struck first from behind. he asked, do you have a problem? when he said no, martin said well, you do now and punched zimmerman in the face breaking his nose and smashing his head against the sidewalk. zimmerman was treated for nose and head injuries.

on capitol hill, his parents appeared in a meeting on racial profiling. >> i would like to say thank you and he's sadly missed. we'll continue to fight for justice for him. >> a lot of people can relate to our situation. it breaks their heart just like it breaks mine. >> reporter: zimmerman has yet to be charged in a case that has generated widespread outrage. jane watrel, news 4. >> in florida, a special prosecutor is in charge of this case. she says her agency is several days away from deciding how to proceed. extra precautions taken at potomac high school in virginia after somebody threatened to take a gun to school. last friday, graffiti was found inside the bathroom. in it, writing someone threatened to take a gun to

school today. e-mails went out to parents. police were on campus all day. they do not believe it was a credible threat, but they had to take precautions. a hate crime victim is speaking out for the first time since he was attacked in the district. he was beaten and robbed in columbia heights part of the city earlier this month. his attacker is still on the loose. darcy spencer reports on the difficult recovery. >> completely broken jaw in the front. >> reporter: he doesn't want to be identified for fear of his safety. he's the victim of a violent hate crime. his jaw wired shut after it was shattered in two places. >> two titanium plates hold iin my front jaw together. >> reporter: the victim now home from an eight-day stay in the hospital was robbed, beaten and dragged down a sidewalk because he's gay. police called the attack a hate crime. >> i would like to think it was just a crime. i don't know. but, i mean, that is what was

being screamed out at the time. >> reporter: the attack happened in the victim's own community. it started right here at the corner convenience store. he says it's shaken his sense of safety. >> oh, absolutely, absolutely. i don't like leaving the house alone right now. >> reporter: the attack happened march 12 on georgia avenue in columbia heights. the victim stepped out of a cab when he was attacked, twice. >> the next thing i know, i'm being dragged and kicked repeatedly and i just remember clawing the ground trying to get away. >> reporter: in the second attack, he was robbed of his cell phone and ipad. >> i was attacked again by someone coming up saying they were police. then again, i was repeatedly kicked in the face. >> reporter: the victim and his partner believe someone must have seen something. >> if you know about the attack, come forward.

>> reporter: it was the second hate crime in a 24 hour period. the day before, another gay man was shot in the stomach during a fight in an i hop restaurant. a woman was arrested in the shooting. >> i have to believe in karma and hope it catches up. >> in columbia heights, darcy spencer, news 4. >> he may have suffered nerve damage to his chin. his mouth will be wired shut for a month. d.c. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information in the case. vandals desecrated a se cemetery. 20 tombstones and monuments knocked over at the cemetery earlier this month. some of the stones date back to the 19th century. they can't be repaired. they offered a $500 reward for information that leads to an arrest. thanks to contributions of local businesses and community members, the award is more than

$1400. closing time at bars in the district might be getting later if mayor gray gets his way. some people worry the move might create what they are calling a bourbon street atmosphere in some neighbors. tom sherwood reports. >> i would like to thank major gray. >> reporter: he presented his $10 billion budget for 2013 trying to avoid major tax increases or too many service cuts. gray would raise $3 million a year by allowing bars to stay open an extra hour to 4:00 a.m. on weekends. that's meeting resistance from people worried about safety. >> we don't want any of that. we don't want a bourbon street atmosphere. >> any suggestions about changing the alcohol sales will be met with concerns. >> i am concerned about people

being in cars or otherwise out later at night and drinking for longer periods. >> this place opening since the 1950s, this owner would welcome the new business. >> it's okay. lots of people are out late and people who work late shifts. they want someplace to go. they don't have to get up early. >> urban essentials or a late night bar could affect the retail mix. >> it makes it more difficult to run day-to-day businesses. the bars get too rowdy. >> reporter: it would take weeks to work out and wouldn't become effective until late this year. in the district, tom sherwood, news 4. many of the bars have voluntary agreements with their neighborhoods. those agreements could affect whether some bars could take advantage of the new longer hours. five bomb-sniffing dogs that

22 face transplants have been performs all over the world. surgeons at the university of maryland medical center say a man from virginia had the most extensive face transplant to date. erika gonzalez reports on his

remarkable transformation. >> reporter: richard norris' high school prom picture. n normal by most people's standards. then in 1997, a terrible gun accident left him severely disfigured. >> you can see the individual as he lived 15 years of his life behind the mask. >> reporter: this is after multiple rounds of reconstructive surgery. doctors at the university of maryland were working on how to perform the most extensive full face transplant, originally intended for combat veterans injured by ieds. >> this is the most remarkable thing i have ever seen. >> reporter: once it was ready to be tested, norris was selected to have the surgery. the opportunity came after a man died and his family donated his organs. >> in their terrible, terrible moment of grief, they were able to think of others in need.

>> reporter: last week, four people received the heart, two lungs, kidney and liver. norris received the man's face, including jaw, teeth and tongue. >> we look at the donor and richard and it's a blend of two individuals. >> reporter: after 36 hours of surgery and 150 nurses and physicians, this is the new richard norris. >> before people used to stare at richard because he wore a mask. the hardest thing for him was to eat. children would look at him and that was fine. to have adults stare at him. now they have another reason to stare at him. it's amazing. >> reporter: the recovery time is seven to ten days. if you ask richard norris, he's ready to go home today. physicians say he'll have to have a few more outpatient procedures to get him back on the road to recovery. in baltimore, erika gonzalez,

got to 55 earlier. now 54. winds out of the southwest at 54 miles per hour. the temperatures are cool over the next few hours. 54 in honeytown. as you go outside, you may need the jacket as you step out and about. not going to get quite as cold as last night. 36 in hagerstown. 35 around frederick. 35 in culpeper. 40 in fredericksburg and 44 inside the district. temperatures staying above the freezing mark for most of us. we didn't see too many of the effects of freezing numbers last night. it wasn't below freezing that long. tomorrow, high temperatures back in the 70s after 55 today. we move up nearly 20 degrees to 73 in washington. 75 in fredericksburg. the there's a chance of showers, maybe a thunderstorm. but they will come late in the afternoon. they are few and far between. 7:00 nothing to worry about. through the day, here comes the front. 4:00, 4:30 is when the front is expected to pass through the
