commenting, but a post on the kindle publishing forum says there was a website issue and that's what was to blame. back to you. >> no twilight zone? no mystery, huh? >> no mystery. but i couldn't resist the twilight zone music, if we had it. >> all right. at least you didn't do the music with it. >> that's right. exactly. >> thank you. you're welcome, see you soon. >> today dr. joshua winer is here to answer your questions dealing with disability and obsession with cutting your hair and help for a stroke victim. we like these sessions when you get to answer things that folks have written in and we've got some interesting questions for you today. are you set? >> ready. >> the first question comes from a 45-year-old man from maryland. he wrote i spend most of my days laying in bed alone in my bedroom. it's difficult for me to do the things in life that are fun because i have terrible back and leg pain. i don't think people understand how desperate i am to get out of this deep dark hole.
11:48 am
how can you help this man? >> well i think this guy clearly needs to seek out some mental health treatment as well as some pain management treatment. it's very common for people dealing with colonic pain to suffer emotionally. a lot of people who have chronic pain need to be on antidepressants to help them deal with the chronic pain. this gentleman also is under a lot of financial stress and feels like he doesn't have the money to get the help he needs. i would suggest he contact his county mental health clinic. sometimes they offer services on sliding scale. or look for schools in the area that are training therapists, psychologists or psychiatrist and oftentimes they'll have trainees that will see you for free. >> if someone is in pain and depressed over the pain, just solving the pain problem is not enough. >> solving the pain problem can often make a huge difference. you should probably start there. treat the pain and then see what happens. but oftentimes treating the pain requires an antidepressant as well. >> here's the next question from

a woman who writes, i have reason to believe my husband may be a sociopath. he doesn't seem to pose a threat to our family, but he fits many of the characteristics i've read online. can you please tell me more about this disorder and what steps we should take to get help? >> a sociopath is more of a layman's term. the term used in psychiatry is anti-social personality disorder. and people with this disorder have little regard for right or wrong. they're man patelipulative. this person probably doesn't show that much affection towards his wife or care how she feels about the marriage. i think she absolutely needs to number one, seek out some help with a marriage counselor. if he's willing to get treatment. unfortunately, people with anti-social personality disorder, they don't think there's a problem with them. they think there's a problem with everybody else. and unfortunately, the data isn't very good. there's not much help out there for people with this disorder.
11:50 am
she's in a very rough spot. she needs to think about whether she can stay in this marriage with this person. >> we've got another question. it's i have a problem with cutting my hair when i am upset. i'm taking symbalta which seems to be the only antidepressant that i can stand. i don't know which direction to go in next. >> i've never treated with people with this condition. i've treated them with a similar condition that they'll pull their hair out. generally, what's needed is cognitive behavioral therapy with some relaxation training to help people have alternate coping skills and also she should probably try a number of different antidepressants, because sometimes one antidepressant won't work, but others will and it seems like there's. and people with ocd-like behaviors, generally need very high doses of the antidepressants before they get a response. maybe she needs to try some of

the medicines she's used in the past, but at higher doses. >> talk to her doctor about that one. >> yes. >> last question here, my friend suffered a stroke almost three years ago and has suffered multiple problems after that i often feel like i'm dealing with a 5-year-old. what coping strategies should i be utilizing? and what can i do to modify his behavior? >> well some things that a lot of people are not aware of is that after anyone has had any kind of traumatic injury to their brain, either from a trauma or a stroke, they develop person algt and behavioral changes very often. sometimes these can be permanent behavioral changes. this is not all that uncommon. i think what this person has to do is seek out the help of a network. a group therapy support group. they can go to the american stroke association website, which is a very good website. in there you can put in your address and you can find support groups locally in the area. that might be of some assistance. >> it sounds like good advice, dr. wiener, thank you so much. we look forward to another

feeding her 10-month-old son named bear. but the technique is what some consider questionable. silverstone chewed up vegetables from her soup and used her mouth to feed it to her son. nbc's dr. nancy snyderman wayed in on this unusual feeding style. >> certainly there are no health benefits from all of this and a couple of down sides, there's nothing dirtier than the human mouth. there's nothing good about the viruses and bacteria that live in the adult mouth and a child's immune system may not be ready for those in his or her mouth. so it's not a great idea and you hit on the social parenting aspect. toddlerho toddlerhood. learning the skills of how to sit in a high chair and eat foods with your hands and eat on your own, those just are really born adaptive skills. >> snyderman said the method could put a child at risk of contracting a virus. silverstone posted a note with the video that said the veggies from the miso soup are her son's favorite.
