i read it and it's very doable. >> it's just had a phenomenal first week opening. >> it is incredible. >> i think it's interesting, too, that it appeals to people our age and these young kids and it really runs the gamut, doesn't it? >> yeah. >> tell us about it. i know kath loved it. i have yet to see it. tell us about it. >> it is a really great movie and a very good adaptation. sometimes you read a book and wish they hadn't actually made the movie. >> a lot of people who loved the book said it is so true to it. >> it is true to it. he really took his time in setting up these characters really well which often doesn't happen. we think that that's sort of not important. we want to get to the action. but gary really takes his time and it is so compelling. >> the action doesn't matter if you don't care about the characters and you care about them right off the bat. it looks like it is a modern story because the protagonist young woman that comes from what looks like appalachia or something like that. but then you realize how far into the future does it take place? >> i don't even know -- 20 some years into the future. >> so fashion has changed.

>> fashion has changed. but the devil's still wearing prada. some things don't change. >> tell us about your look. that blue wig, the teeth -- did you have anything to do with putting that look together? >> yes. well, he's very well described in the book and in the script. but i wanted to go a little bit farther so i wanted him to be very tan. i had teeth made -- i was in england so we had everything made there, had teeth made, two upper, lower teeth. we only used the upper. i had noses made, too, because i wanted him to look like he'd had excessive amounts of plastic surgery but the noses didn't quite work. >> so that's your schnoz up there. >> yes. >> that's quite impressive. >> thank you very much. but it took time. it took about seven hours to put all the pieces together on the first day. then after that, it was about an hour and a half. >> you've walked so many red carpets for so many films. this one looked different from all the rest. watching that crazy mob scene that's been following you guys around. >> yeah.

that was weird to have -- to see people like that. people so excited about it. then people just bursting into tears. i'd never seen that before. >> you know what i'm heartened by with that reaction? there is so much callousness in our world today and we don't appreciate life that we have and this movie really celebrates life and for young people especially reading these books about sacrificial love that's the complete opposite of so much of the garbage we get from our culture. so i'm thrilled -- because i'm a parent. i want my kids to see movies like this. >> i think it is a really important movie. i think that the main character played beautifully by jennifer lawrence, she's just incredible. she has such a true moral compass, this character, and she is so compelling. you want to watch her. you want to see what choices she's going to make. >> i don't think that the violence is gratuitous. you have to understand the violence to understand why the violence is such a bad thing. >> the violence is actually not gratuitous.

what-if. i really miss my grandmother so when i'm sitting there working, this is my way of being close to her. my mother has all my records my grandmother used to play. you ole r -- you will know this because of the music. at the turn of the century caruso was the first guy to do records. other opera stars thought it was beneath them to record their records but this guy was such a man of the people. i felt like i really wanted to write that voice. and my grandmother was crazy about him! so i made her his seamstress. so that gets you into the metropolitan opera. so you have these immigrants that built these costumes. you know? we never talk about that. we would think about her. but the artistry of every seam and stitch and the blood, sweat and tears that went into it, the tailors -- the shoemakers. i really wanted to do an ode to craftsmanship, tell an immigrant tale, on homage to my grandparents but a real page-turner. it takes you through two generations. >> i'm waiting for a trip so i
