and now, from washington's leading news station, this is news4 at 6:00. $640 million, the biggest lottery jackpot of all-time, and one of the winning mega millions tickets was sold in maryland. good evening, everyone, i'm chris gordon. we'll have more on that in just a moment. but we begin tonight with breaking news. a man was shot at the tacoma community center in northwest washington as early voting was going on inside. news4's darcy spencer joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: chris, i can tell you, this early voting center has reopened. voting was disrupted for a period of time today because of this shooting. it broke out right around 3:30

this afternoon as people were here coming to this center to vote in the early voting process. you can see here behind me that it has, in fact, reopened. we're told the man was not shot inside the community center. he was shot outside, and then stumbled inside to receive help. at that point, the community center was placed on lockdown. we're told that no voters were inside at that time. but the center had to be closed down for about 20 minutes this afternoon as police conducted their investigation. >> one of our staff members heard a gunshot, and followed emergency procedures to go ahead and lock down the voting area when she heard that. that was at about 3:30 this afternoon. none of our poll workers left the area. no voters, no one entered the room. no voters present at the time. >> there was someone standing out there directing voters coming in to try to vote. when it first came up, they said you couldn't actually vote here and i would have to go to another location and then someone came over and said no, we could go in but had to walk

behind the building. >> what i understand is that they're investigating a possible robbery, an adult male was shot in the shoulder. and then he ran to the recreation center. >> reporter: d.c. police are saying that the victim, again, appears to have been shot in the shoulder, was transporteded, conscious and breathing here from the scene. police are looking for what they believe are possibly four people involved in this. we don't have a very good description, but one thing to keep in mind, they said two of them they're looking for were we're neon yellow shoes, and one was wearing a pair of bright purple shoes. again, the voting was disrupted here for about 20 minutes. it has reopened. and this center here will be open until 7:00 tonight. reporting live from northwest washington, darcy spencer, news4. >> thank you, darcy. last night was a bit of a letdown for most of us who bought a mega millions ticket but not for three winners including one in maryland who hit that $640 million jackpot. a store in baltimore county sold

a ticket with the winning numbers 2, 4, 23, 38, 46 with 23 as the mega ball. brian mooar explains what this historic jackpot could mean for that winner and others across the country. >> tonight's mega number is 23 -- >> reporter: after the biggest mega millions lottery drawing in history -- three winning tickets are about to bring some serious change to a fortunate few in maryland, illinois and kansas. one of the tickets was sold at this 7-eleven in baltimore county, maryland. >> it was a quick pick, and there was only one ticket purchased by the player at that time. >> la keisha polk got lucky. just not that lucky. >> i checked my tickets and i won $150. dollars. >> reporter: sure, the odds were long. but someone had to win and someone did at this illinois convenience store. but a lot more didn't. >> i heard a lot, darn, it wasn't me. or darn, i forgot to get my

ticket. >> reporter: the store is going to share its bonus with employees. this big check is waiting for the illinois winner. >> thank you. >> reporter: but with all the fren frenzied ticket-buying, the state is reaping its own reward. >> all eyes on it, participating record jackpot, record money for the common school fund. it's just an exciting time for all concerned. >> reporter: for most of us, the mega millions was a mega letdown. back down to earth and back to work on monday. brian mooar, nbc news. >> at least a dozen people in our area are partial winners after last night's drawing. five tickets that matched the first five numbers were sold in virginia. one at the hanson sunoco gas station in fredericksburg. those winners will each get $250,000. now, four $250,000 tickets were sold across maryland. and in d.c., the mac market and deli on mccarthur boulevard in

northwest was one of four stores in the city to sell a $10,000 ticket. now, chuck bell, by your presence here at work tonight, i take it you're not holding. >> i love my job so much that i'm here even with $200 million in the bank. >> uh-huh. >> nice day outside today. would have been nicer if we had hit the jackpot, chris, no doubt about that. but alas, it's a good thing i like what i do for a living. outside today, we've seen breaks of sunshine from time to time, and that did help push temperatures today up into the low 60s for a brief time. right now, though, as the sun getting ready to go back down fairly shortly, temperatures drifting back into the mid 50s from washington northbound to the pennsylvania line. still some warmer air ahead of that cool front, near 70 down the road in charlottesville. looking for a cool and dry evening. a sunny start to your sunday. but some fast-moving showers coming our way. i'll tell you when they're going to get here and how long those fast-moving showers will stick around, chris, with the seven-day. >> see you later, chuck. they're not backing down

until there is justice for trayvon martin. that's what a civil rights leader, al sharpton and jesse jackson said today as they led a crowd of thousands in sanford, florida. they marched to the police department and demanded the arrest of neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman. he remains free more than a month after he shot martin, claiming it was in self defense. the death of unarmed black teenager has sparked dozens of rallies around the world. >> you act like we are not going to rise up and stand together. if you shoot us in sanford, it hits us in harlem. it hits us in chicago. it hits us in l.a. we will stand together! >> the fbi and justice department continue to investigate. a grand jury in florida could take up the case as soon as april 10th. police have arrested a maryland man accused in at least five bank robberies in three different states. he is john tal rico, a 49-year-old man from cumberland.

he's suspected of robbing banks in maryland, pennsylvania and west virginia. the robberies took place between december 2010 and march 16th of this year. he has been charged with three robe res in maryland. charges are still pending. still ahead tonight, what sparked a wild police chase that was caught on tape. the suspect crashes the get-away car and then takes off running. also coming up, robots doing battle over a game of basketball. and why the national cathedral will be going dark

my dad was a union electrician. sometimes i'd tag along to a work site, carrying his lunch or tools. it was good, honest work. i went to college with the help of a union scholarship, then started a maryland business, creating jobs by providing financing to small companies wall street ignored. today, congress is ignoring our need for jobs. my dad the electrician taught me, if something's broken, get in there and try to fix it. i'm john delaney, and i approve this message.

witnesses say a funeral turned into a war zone last night in miami. two people were killed and twelve others were injured in a drive-by shooting outside a funeral hope. a gunman opened fire on a group of mourners, mostly young adults as they left the home for services for a 22-year-old friend. one of the wounded is a 5-year-old girl. no arrests have been made in this case. the families of two young women who went missing are teaming up to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to anyone else. relatives of morgan harrington and bethany decker spent the morning outside the giant food store on fairfax boulevard in fairfax. decker disappeared in january 2011. she was several months pregnant, and there is still no sign of her. harrington went missing after a

metallica concert in charlottesville. her body was found in a field three years ago. dna linked herrington's murder to a sexual assault in fairfax. in that case, the victim was walking home from the same grocery store where the families passed out flyers today. >> we're here today, really, to help save the next girl. there's a predator in this area somewhere between charlottesville and fairfax who at the top of his game. and we want to make sure people know to look out for one another, so that he's not able to create such pain for another family. >> now, there is no evidence of any connection between herrington's case and decker's case. a police chase through philadelphia ended with a violent crash. police say it started last night when a man pulled a gun on an officer and took off in a silver car. police chased him for miles. eventually, he plowed into two other cars at an intersection and decided to ditch the car and

a wildlife center in south africa has a rare new addition. this is harry. he's a pigmy hippo. he was born back on march 22nd, and his mother rejected him. so the staff at the wildlife center have been caring for him to help him survive. pigmy hippos are on the critically endangered species list. there are 3,000 left in the wild. some of our nation's future leaders in science and engineering showed off their skills at the d.c. convention center today. high school students put their robots to the test in a three-day basketball tournament. rebound rumble featured more than 60 teams from 10 states and the district. competition is designed to help build interest in technology, but for most of the kids, it's really about having fun. >> this is the first year we've made it to eliminations and

we're really, really happy about that. >> the robots are just a trick. the students get engaged with the robots, but they're actually learning how to work together as a team, and they're getting excited about hands-on opportunities to build something, to create something, to invent something. >> the robot competition includes teams from nearly a dozen district public high schools. major defense contractors were on hand, saying these students are among the company's future engineers. in australia, sydney's iconic harbor bridge and opera house went dark this evening, along with hundreds of landmarks all around the world. it's part of earth hour, a call for action against climate change. this year, 147 countries and territories are participating. now, in our area, the national cathedral will go dark, 8:30 local time, and the lights will stay off for an hour. earth hour from 8:30 to 9:30. one of the things they say you should do is look at the stars.

>> absolutely, right? we have a few too many clouds for an awful lot of star-gazing tonight, unfortunately, because that would have been a nice treat. that's usually when -- the lights in and around your house and saving electricity and therefore saving a little bit of pollution. outside today, did you have your kite ready to go? did you go to the national mall with it? because today was the day for kite-flying at the national mall. the smithsonian national kite-flying festival down there today. hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of beautiful kites all aloft. and many, many very excited spectators and participators down at ground level. look at her. she's excited about her kite. running around, having a good time today. weather actually cooperated pretty well. wouldn't have hurt to have a little more sunshine, but hey, at least it wasn't raining. sometimes the kites don't fly as much as you would like them to.

outside right now, still a mostly cloudy sky. 56 our current temperature. an east breeze at 20 miles per hour. the easterly breeze perfect for quite-flying weather this afternoon. temperatures, though, trending downward. there has been a weak cool front slide down through the area during the course of the day. the cooler air coming about washington northbound. still a little bit milder ahead of the front. 64 in fredericksburg. 70 down the road in charlottesville. so as you make your plans to get outside and enjoy your saturday evening, clouds, yes, but rain drops no. so it will be dry. temperatures, mid 50s now, back into the upper 40s and low 50s by 11:00 to be able to. nothing to worry about as far as rainfall goes. radar shows zero drops in our immediate vicinity. there are rain showers. some thundershowers now going just south of the richmond area along interstate 64. stronger and in some cases severe thunderstorms across parts of tennessee and alabama. that's all well down to our south, and that's where it's going to be staying. so no worry for us for tonight or for the majority of your sunday, as well. as high pressure is building on

in, cool and dry weather for the overnight hours. start off temperatures tomorrow morning, upper 30s to low and mid 40s. so noticeably cooler than today. and high pressure moves offshore tomorrow allowing a fast-moving clipper to come running our way. here we are at 11:00 tomorrow night and that system zipping through here. probably going to stay dry through about sunset. but between about sundown, which is about 7:30 tomorrow night and this time, 11:00. and then intoel the early morning hours monday, that will be our best chance of seeing some quick-moving showers. but by monday, late morning, lunch time, the sunshine will be back. so overnight tonight, mostly clear, a bit of an april chill in the air for your april fool's morning tomorrow morning. start-off temperatures, 39 to 44. and tomorrow afternoon, a sunny start. clouds coming back tomorrow afternoon, and a chance for some showers here, but not until late in the day. and really after the sun goes down. and as a result, highs tomorrow will be nice and mild. mid to upper 60s. here you go with your seven-day forecast. nice-looking day tomorrow. rain chances stacked up between sundown tomorrow and sunrise on

well, homefully this is the relief caps fans have been waiting for. amber is here. >> they need to hold on to the final playoff spot. missing 40 games was enough. niklas backstrom will finally return to the ice for the capitals tonight as they take on the canadiens at verizon center. game time is set for 7:00 p.m. the star center is sure to give the caps big boost offensively. as of right now, they hold on to the final playoff spot, which is four games remaining. it's been a long haul for the 24-year-old swede who suffered a concussion back on january 3rd. canadiens' winger, rene bork who was a flame, suspended for the illegal elbow to the head. so a bit of irony perhaps that

virginia cavaliers to college park. looking to avoid an 0 and 2 start. second quarter, maryland down one. the goalie, outlit pass to brigs. and brigs isn't stopping until he is scoring. he takes it all the way, beats rob fortuneato and tied at 5. game at 7, virginia with the ball. look at bregs. he gives virginia an 8-7 lead, a lead they would hold on to. later in the game, steel stanwick, i love that name, double teamed, doesn't matter, manages to score. take a look at that again. unbelievable goal from stanwick. he had three goals, five assists. virginia wins 12-8 to improve to 9 and 1 this season. maryland drops to 5 and 3. next up for the terps, they face navy this friday in college park. opening day is less than a week away. steven strasburg will tow the rubber for the nationals in

he was at the dulles expo center signing autographs for a experts memorabilia show. a lot of people think this is the preview, maybe touring the city he might be in as the redskins have that number-two overall pick. coming up in the draft, just 26 days away. but remember, everybody thinks rg3 is going to be the one that comes to washington. remember, the colts haven't for sure said they're going to take andrew luck. so we don't know exactly what's going to happen. but he could be living in d.c. soon. >> and, you know, he could be at the final four. so being here in d.c. is a good thing. >> exactly. >> thank you. that's the news for now.
