plus we're going to put -- i've already put a little bit of the hieronic acid, but you can put some of the aging preparation and see you will be able to introduce it to a deeper level of the skin. >> what is hieronic acid? >> it's a great plumper of the skin. it's in a lot of skin care products and it's also in the fillers that we use when we inject them into the skin. >> so when you put the little holes, that's going to go in at the same time? >> that's actually putting the hieronic acid down into the skin. >> is she going to squeal? >> i hope not. i have it on kind of a low speed here, but it's done kind of in a circular motion like this, and we're just going around. these needles are puncturing. do you feel anything, joan? barely? just barely. >> no pain at all. >> there is a little bit of redness. >> if you can move to this side

we'll be able to see it better with our camera. >> i'm not left-handed, but we'll try here. it's in a circular motion. as you can see, just a little bit of redness right there. then we go in a diagonal motion and horizontal vertical motion, and what it does is all these little stabs create wounds or columns in the skin that the collagen has to form and grow in it. >> is this done over the entire face? >> it is done over the entire face, yes. >> about how long does it take to do it? >> it can take about an hour to do the full face and around the eyes and around the lips. the person is numb, so it goes pretty quickly. you'll have a little residual redness for about a week, and other than that, did you have much -- you can see, actually, a little bit of redness on her skin right now. >> did it hurt, joan? >> not at all. it felt like holding an electric toothbrush barrel against the skin. >> more vibration, if anything.

and the needles are very, very tiny. >> have you been able to see any results? have you been using it enough to be able to tell us if it works well? >> also, i have the fraxel, which is a laser we brought into the studio -- >> about a month ago? >> yes. it's doing that without the heating element. if people have ever had the fraxel, they know this doesn't hurt as much as that does. and there is an element that causes hyperpigmentation, and this is actually a better method. we use it for fine lines, we use it for tightening of the skin, we use it for wrinkles. it's used for a number of different things. it's pretty portable, very affordable. therefore, we can pass on the lower cost tohe patient versus the expensive fraxel treatments. >> joan, thank you for being our patient today. before you go, dr. burgess, we want to ask you about a report

we had earlier which is about the rise of melanoma, especially in younger women. >> yes, we do see that, and impart of skinpac, which is the skin political action committee with the american dermatology, and yes, we have found there is truly an increase. what we have been trying to do is to lobby a lot of state legislature bodies to minimize or cut off the age in which students or kids can go to these tanning beds. >> so you actually agree with the report. you believe tanning beds may be the reason? >> right now anyone can go to tanning beds regardless of their age. we're saying they need to be older than 18. if they want to make this choice and be at risk at 74% increased risk of melanoma, we don't want to inflict that on children. we pass all kind of other laws to protect children, why can't we pass that one. >> dr. burgess, thank you. and joan, thank you for coming today. very interesting device. 11:52.
