that ripped homes apart and sent tractor trailers flying through the sky. good afternoon. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the twisters ripped through the densely populated dallas/ft. worth area. miraculously no one was injured or killed. >> but the storms did leave a violent path of destruction in their wake. jay gray has the latest now on the cleanup efforts in texas. >> reporter: the sounds of recovery echo across north texas now. crews working through the wreckage, a string of 13 tornadoes left behind. in some areas using heavy equipment and others the work is by hand. for some. all of this debris being pushed into piles is all that's left of their lives before the storm. >> we need help. i know we can't go back in our house. we don't have a roof. >> reporter: hoping to provide that help, hundreds of volunteers have poured into the strike zone, sweeping up,

scraping up, and carrying away what they can. >> they need it. that's why. >> reporter: and there is still so much to do here. texas governor rick perry got a first-hand look at the damage from the air today. >> it's a stunning amount of devastation. >> reporter: so many here have lost so much. >> irreplaceable treasures and things that the men and women who lived here two days ago see strong across the roads and in their yards and then in some places never be able to find them or replace them. >> reporter: it is an emotional struggle for survivors battered by the violent storms but not broken. >> it's really a close-knit area here. >> reporter: a bond and history they will call on during what is sure to be a long and difficult recovery.

costly as well. state and federal officials will only say likely hundreds of millions of dollars as they continue to assess the damage here. jay gray, nbc news. forney, texas. back home get ready. temperatures are heading south overnight. >> meteorologist doug kammerer is in the storm center with the latest. >> you look outside right now and it is a gorgeous picture. looks like plenty of sunshine. over the past couple months we've been talking about temperatures way above average. today, however, we're sitting outside below average. take a look ut there right now. you can see a few high clouds across the area and now down to our city cam you can see what is happening across the region. temperature right now sitting at 60 degrees at the airport. that is below average. the average high temperature is 63 for this time of year. winds right now out of the south about 8 miles an hour. i expect the number to go up just a little bit before we end the day today. 57, a cool 57 in gaithersburg and leesburg. down to the south fredericksburg right now with more cloud cover around 61 degrees. look at charlottesville only

around 56 down there. they have a lot more in the way of clouds just down to the south and even a few showers along the blue ridge. roanoke by the way 46 degrees out there right now. there is cool air across the area and there is going to be even colder air moving in overnight tonight. cool around 9:00 down into the upper 40s in most locations. 46 at 11:00. then 39. this is in the city. 39 at 5:00 a.m. 40 by 7:00 a.m. when you step out the door it will be a very chilly start. some areas will be near freezing. overnight tonight. and there are freeze warnings in effect. i'll show you where those warnings are and who is going to be affected the most coming up. >> thanks, doug. you may have seen and heard fighter jets fly over the district this morning. nasa and the faa are preparing to bring the space shuttle discovery from florida to the washington area to dulles airport. two t-38 training jets flew about 1500 feet over the city taking photographs and scouting out possible routes for the shuttle. they wanted to make sure it could pass safely over the

monuments. discovery is set to arrive april 17th traveling atop a 747. it will then be flown to the smithsonian's air and space m museum. a judge in texas today ordered a psychiatric exam for the jet blue pilot accused of disrupting the flight. the exam will determine if clayton osbon was legally sane that day and whether he is competent to stand trial. passengers said they wrestled him to the floor after he left the cockpit and ran through the cabin screaming about religion and terrorists. it happened last week and forced an emergency landing in texas. he also has a detention hearing on monday. prosecutors say he should remain in federal custody without bond. some welcome news today on the jobs front. fewer americans are filing for unemployment. it's another sign that the recovery is accelerating. in this fiercely partisan election year both sides came together today to celebrate a little common ground. steve handelsman has the story. >> i want to thank all of you for coming.

>> reporter: president obama and top republicans came to the rose garden. they cooperated on a bill to help new business start-ups and, coincidentally today got the good economic news. the number of americans claiming new unemployment benefits last week. 357,000 was the lowest in four years. >> our economy has begun to turn a corner but we've still got a long way to go. we've still got a lot of americans out there looking for a job. >> reporter: this was atlanta airport. people lining up to get jobs -- 700 will in new restaurants and shops here. there's hope tomorrow's national jobs report will show another strong bounce back. the bill signed today cuts red tape to promote business start-ups. critics worry wall street giants like goldman sachs might abuse the bill to avoid regulation. the goal is getting financing for small businesses to grow. house republican leader eric canter. >> i hope it represents the kind

of bipartisan work that we can actually accomplish here in washington over the next few months. have a very difficult economic situation still. >> reporter: our record warm weather is helping. retail clothing sales are up. outdoor sporting goods sales. and that means jobs. >> when we start to see these retailers do well because of an early spring, many of them will take the sales and continue to create jobs and look for opportunities to grow their business. they'll need new people to do that. >> reporter: more americans hired, music to president obama's ears, as he runs for re-election. tomorrow's the big day -- the march jobs report. will it show another positive move in the hiring direction? i'm steve handelsman, news 4. invisible children, the group that produced the viral kony 2012 video that targets african warlord joseph kony released a sequel today. >> telling your leaders that you care is critical for the success

of these efforts. your voice. >> this new video show cases the efforts to uganda, in uganda, and encourages people to take action and also addresses critics who say the group distorts facts and doesn't spend enough to help people. noticeably absent is jason russell the narrator of the original film. last month he was diagnosed with brief psychosis after a public outburst. lawyers for former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky tried to get the judge to throw out some critical evidence today. the judge said he's not ready to rule on their motion to dismiss the child sexual abuse charges. nbc's michelle franzen has the latest from pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky walked into court this morning where defense attorneys were expected to present arguments asking a judge to dismiss all child sexual abuse charges against him due to what they called lack of sufficient evidence. instead, defense attorney amadola asked the judge to withdraw the motion for now he

said until the evidence is more concrete. outside the courthouse he says he is still concerned the ongoing investigation that includes grand jury testimony won't give them enough time to prepare a defense at trial now set to begin in june. >> we're ready with what we have. the problem is what we don't have and what we don't have right now is any additional discovery the commonwealth gives us at our request or our own volition as well as the grand jury materials which we know we're not going to get until right before trial. >> reporter: the former penn state assistant football coach faces 52 child sex abuse charges involving ten alleged victims dating back more than a decade. sandusky's defense team says they are still missing key information about his accusers. >> for instance to have a case where there is no person. they say there was a victim and we can't tell you how old the person was, what their name was, who they are, or whether they consented or what. >> reporter: prosecutors expressed their own frustration, saying they have provided as much information they can due to the ongoing investigation and

accused the defense of using delay tactics. >> we look forward to the day when the victims under oath testify as to the abuse to which they were subjected. >> reporter: that day in court for both the alleged victims and sandusky now two months away barring any other delays. following the hearing sandusky left the courthouse and remains confined in his home while this court case plays out. michelle francen, nbc news, belafonte, pennsylvania. time to play ball. the nats played their first or will play their first game of the season this afternoon. >> what a ticket. after bill murray threw out the first pitch before the game began the nats are in chicago to play the cubs. steven strasburg was the opening day starter. strasburg began well. here with a strikeout to end the second inning. we'll have much more on the nats coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. it's still a megamystery. today maryland lottery officials say no one has come forward to claim the winning megamillions

ticket bought in the state last week. what they do know is the ticket was sold at a 7-eleven in baltimore county, one of three winning tikds in the record-breaking $656 million prize. lottery officials say they looked at surveillance video to see if they could identify the person who bought the ticket but no luck. we'll have more on that in a live report from baltimore coming up on news 4 at 5:00. for its part the illinois lottery gave the convenience store that sold one of the winning megamillions tickets its jackpot today. we still don't know who purchased that ticket in red bud, illinois, but the moto mart received a $500,000 check. in turn, moto mart is sharing the money with its ten employees. a lottery official says the situation is a perfect illustration of what lotteries are all about. >> just shows you that lotteries are all about luck, all about randomness, and anything is

take a look at this video. residents on the outskirts of the german city of dresden were surprised by an unusual sight this morning. a driver who wanted to load a container on to his truck miscalculated that container's weight, up ending the vehicle. luckily for the driver he wasn't inside the cab. it took two cranes to get the truck back up on to its wheels. matt lauer got a chance to ask ryan seacrest if he was after his job. >> there was some back and forth yesterday on "today." seacrest announced he will be joining the nbc team during the olympic games this summer. on the tonight show jay leno told viewers what really went on between the two of them. thnchts morning on the "today" show matt lauer interviewed ryan seacrest about the rumor that seacrest might take over his job. here is a piece of the interview. take a look. >> ryan, a friendly -- we have talked about this. we've joked about this. there is no tension here. >> they went to commercial break. show what happened right at commercial break. >> great to see you.

some interesting pictures here from mars. the red planet. nasa says this traveling plume of smoke is a massive dust storm

on the planet. the phenomenon is called a dust devil. it's created by strong surface heat. this particular dust devil was captured by a special camera orbiting mars. the plume is 12 miles above the surface. that's nearly the entire length of the capital crescent trail. despite the size of the plume scientists say you wouldn't be knocked over by it because the atmosphere on mars is very dense. >> it looks a little like a twister at the very bottom. >> it does. >> it is. that is exactly what it is. i would see those out in colorado quite often. >> really. >> clear skies. everything is great. then you look off in the distance and there is a big dust storm going on. >> yeah. >> really amazing. also had one in elementary school. fifth grade. a big one right there over in burke right by the mcdonald's. >> yeah, yeah. there was a huge one that we all put our faces in. that was really cool to see. >> all right. >> it was that. >> one of those -- anything can happen. >> way to go, doug. he knows about them from first-hand experience. >> yes.

but not on mars. let's take a look and show you what's happening right now. temperatures a lot cooler than they were yesterday. by ten to 20 degrees. but it's still a pretty nice day. actually i was walking outside a little earlier loving today. a lot of people really enjoying it. a great day to get out and about running, maybe doing a little biking. one thing i will say though, pollen is even higher today than it has been over the past couple days. 60 degrees right now. the current temperature. winds out of the south about 8 miles an hour with all that sunshine. at least most of us seeing some sunshine but even with the sun, only at the 57 in gaithersburg. 57 leesburg and 57 in martinsburg. down to the south we have a little more in the way of cloud cover so charlottesville right now only around 56 degrees and there is a freeze warning in effect overnight tonight and through tomorrow morning so we will be seeing a very chilly morning. winchester, la ray, really right around i-81 back to the west but it also includes frederick county, maryland once again for temperatures that will be very close to the freezing mark. cover up those plants.

bring in any sensitive vegetation again. it should not affect the washington, d.c. metro area but i still expect most of us to see temperatures in the low to mid 30s overnight tonight. storm 4 radar nothing to show you as far as rain is concerned until you move way down here with a little speck just south of fredericksburg where the rain is right now and that's where the best chance of rain will be southern portions of virginia but that storm that caused all the damage in texas now moving in towards the southeast. so the masters are going to get wet down there in augusta, georgia later on this afternoon. look at this line of storms just to the south of atlanta. they will continue to see a lot of rain down there over the next 24 hours and this storm is going to have big implications on our weather next week. it's going to move off into the atlantic, up into canada, and then back down bringing us some colder air. next week is going to be a chilly week. we'll talk about that more as we get closer. cooler weather for today? you know that. we've seen the sunshine. we'll see the same thing tomorrow. it'll be sunny but is going to be cool. high temperatures tomorrow, struggling to reach that

dismiss child sexual abuse charges against former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. there was a short pretrial hearing this morning. sandusky's lawyers say they hope the judge will allow them to refile a motion for dismissal after more evidence is disclosed by the prosecution. >> the group invisible children released a followup to its wildly popular kony 2012 video today. it continues to call for the arrest of ugandan war lord joseph kony. the new film addresses some of the critics who argue the group distorts facts and doesn't spend enough of its profits to help people. stocks posted their biggest weekly decline of the year. the dow closed the day lower for the third straight session ending 15 points lower. the nasdaq was up 12 points and the s&p 500 was down about a point. wall street is closed for good friday. for the first time we're hearing the dramatic flight recordings from an 80-year-old woman's incredible emergency landing. helen collins was forced to take over in the cockpit after her

husband died while piloting the plane. eileen park has her story. >> i'm doing fine but i'm getting too close to the airport to land right now. i'll have to make another turn. >> reporter: last time helen collins took flying lessons -- >> my air speed is about 170 right now. >> reporter: -- was almost 30 years ago. after her husband collapsed and died from a heart attack while piloting a cessna twin engine plane helen had no time to panic. >> don't you have any faith in me? >> reporter: officials at door county's cherry land airport are still amazed at her calm and confidence the entire time. >> she attempted a left-hand turn and did an outstanding job. >> reporter: there are plenty of scary moments. >> right here at this position all of the way around the pattern until we come in and land. okay? >> you better get me in it pretty soon. i don't know how long i'll have gas. >> bring the nose up. nose up. keep turning right. keep turning right. >> reporter: helen says her biggest fear was running out of gas but thanks to robert's help she made it. >> don't dive into the runway.

do not dive into the runway. you're doing fine. there you go. okay. you're down. great job, helen. great job. >> reporter: helen was hospitalized from injuries to her spine and a cracked rib but family members say she is doing well. >> you should know they are both licensed pilots. helen's husband suffered a heart atark tack on that flight. >> the idea is so creepy they made a movie out of it but a snake on a plane was all too real for a pilot in australia. he was forced to make an emergency landing today in darwin. the pilot spotted the stow away about ten minutes after takeoff. he wasted no time calling the control tower with a may day and a request that his flight be met by a snake handler. by the time the pilot got back to the airport, the snake was crawling down his leg. >> the snake was crawling down the leg which is frightening. >> the call he made was, you're not going to believe me and it's

not a joke but i have a snake on the plane. >> the snake turned out to be mildly venomous. wildlife officials say it may have followed a frog onboard. there is no sign of a frog though. >> a bank in illinois steps in to save a cat from being euthanized. boots is a healthy 11-year-old cat whose owner recently passed awachlt the owner's will which was written 20 years ago stipulated all of her cats be euthanized but the fifth third bank which oversees the estate took the request to court after finding a shelter for boots. the bank also pointed out that most of the money in the estate was going to animal charities so they didn't think she'd want the cat to be killed. the judge agreed and earlier this week boots was sent to a no kill shelter. high heels or platform shoes? they often lead to lots of pain for a couple of hours of wear. >> even one hour. but now one company is selling emergency flats out of a vending machine in night clubs.

pollen, angry e-mails from farmers wanting some rain. we really need to see some rain. and people today, i put out a tweet and said hey, it's a great day. a little cooler but still i love it. people are like, no, i want it warmer again. >> can't make everybody happy. you can't win. >> no. hopefully we can make you happy because today we've got a pretty nice day and this weekend everybody should be happy because we're looking at a very nice holiday weekend. out there right now you can see what's happening. out across the ball fields right there, along the city and just to the east of the potomac river, just south of the potomac river, temperature right now 60 degrees. with that sunshine, winds out of the south about 8 miles an hour. it is another very nice day but once again a very nice day means we're not seeing that rain. we're not seeing that rain to push down the pollen levels and take a look. very high today. friday and into saturday it's going to stay at that very high level. maybe come down a little on saturday but i doubt it. if you are suffering from pollen you are going to be suffering right on through the weekend. and we need to see some rain to bring that pollen down. i don't think we're going to see

any substantial rain maybe for one to two weeks across our area. current temperatures right now 60 in washington. 62 in rockville. 60 in reston and dulles and down toward prince george's county coming in at 62 right now in college park and 59 in camden springs. a few showers down around the richmond area. a few more clouds down there toochlt for us we're not expecting to see any rain. as i mentioned, anywhere soon. again, we'll stay on the dry side and that is going to mean very cool night tonight. down to about 39 in washington. 33 in frederick. 34 in manassas. there is a freeze warning in effect well to the west including the i-81 corridor and portions west of there. tomorrow afternoon look at these numbers. not bad. temperatures cool though. cooler than average. 59 degrees in washington tomorrow. 57 in gaithersburg. down to the south maybe around 64 in fredericksburg. we're going to go through a little cold streak here and then another one next week. we'll talk about that at 5:00 and 6:00. >> see you then. technology makes it easy

these days to connect with people all over the world. however, a connecticut man managed to send a message 4,000 miles away without using a smart phone or a computer. >> he did it and it did take a while. amanda ross has the story. >> reporter: staring out on the water of the coast jerry pope had an idea. he says he always heard about people finding small treasures in the sea so in october of 2010 he decided to send one of his own. >> i had my bottle and note in my hand and decided to send it on a journey. >> reporter: he tossed the bottle into the water and bid it farewell. >> i said, well, good luck to you. maybe somebody will find a bottle and maybe, hopefully somebody will find it and send me a letter. >> reporter: he had no idea where the bottle would go but inside he put his own letter which gave his name and his address and asked the person who found the letter to send him a letter back. he didn't know if it would make

very sore looking kinda blistery. like somebody had set a bag of hot charcoal on my neck. i was a firefighter for 24 years. but, i have never encountered such a burning sensation until i had the shingles. i remember it well. i was in the back yard doing yard work. i had this irritation going on in my lower neck. i changed shirts because i thought there was something in the collar of the shirt irritating my neck. and i couldn't figure out what was going on. i had no idea it came from chickenpox. i always thought shingles was associated with people...

a painting by the late french artist yves klein is expected to sell for as much as $40 million next month at auction. the painting is called fc-1 which stands for fire color one. it was created with water, a blow torch, and two models coated with paint. klein is considered an important figure in post war european art and his popularity has grown in recent years. he died after a series of heart attacks in 1962 at the age of 34. the painting will be sold by christy's in new york in may and is expected to seat new record for the price of his work. >> wow. incredible colors there. the coast guard plans to sink a ship that was set adrift by the tsunami in japan last year. the derelict shrimping boat has floated all the way to the gulf

of alaska in the past year. the coast guard officials say the boat has no lights or communication systems. not only is it a danger to passing ships, it contains about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel. if left to drift, it could run aground and cause an environmental disaster. environmental officials decided it is less risky to sink the ship with explosives and let the fuel dissipate in the open water. still ahead on news 4, medical experts weigh

health experts say whooping cough has reached epidemic levels in washington state. hundreds of cases have been reported this year. nbc's mike taibbi reports on what parents should know about getting the vaccine. >> reporter: it was whooping cough that landed 2 1/2 week old natalie in intensive care. >> can you open your eyes? >> reporter: where she spent 72 days struggling to breathe, to rest without pain, to survive. she recovered but her mom, michelle, says it was touch and go all those agonizing weeks. and natalie still needs followup care. >> you never, ever want to see your child go through something like this. it's definitely a parent's worst nightmare. >> reporter: it was the same nightmare for heidi brook who passed the disease to her newborn daughter caroline before giving birth heidi thought she just had a cold. >> i was nursing her and she

started to have one of these coughing episodes. she stopped nursing and she turned blue and was coughing and choking and gagging. >> reporter: in fact, four children have died in the current outbreak and the skyrocketing number of newly reported cases led state officials to declare an epide c epidemic. >> so far 646 cases have been reported and confirmed as of march 31st. last year we had 94 in the same period of time. >> reporter: this march of dimes public service announcement can tell you what it sounds like. but in the so-called hot pockets in washington, oregon, across the country in vermont it is a race to get as many people vaccinated as possible against the foe our dr. nancy snyderman says will sneak up on you. >> it sort of looks like a cold. a little cough, runny nose, fever. but all of a sudden that cough becomes a barking cough and then a real struggle to get air. >> reporter: for health

even surveillance video from the 7-eleven can't reveal the winner. good evening. welcome to news 4 at 5:00. >> we begin with breaking news. a police chase begins in fairfax county and ends with a crash. >> it involved several women and a child. news 4's jackie bensen joins us live where it all ended at memorial circle in front of arlington national cemetery. >> reporter: wendy, this was just a wild scene here this afternoon and you can understand with this congest wed spring tourists it was mayhem for a little while. it started about 3:30 in fairfax county and at one point helicopters from two different law enforcement ag swris following the suv. we have a little video of what it looked like after the vehicle crashed. six people including a little boy about 4 or 5 years old were inside the vehicle and were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. i can tell you when w
