mega millions mystery. that mcdonald's worker from baltimore stands by her story that she won, but now, now she claims she lost the winning ticket. >> shamari stone has our exclusive interview. >> reporter: she held a news conference and refused to talk to the media but now she wants to set things straight. she's stressed out after making national headlines claiming to have won the mega millimeters jackpot, $105 million after taxes. >> did you really win the lotto or did you make up this story? >> i didn't make up the story. >> did you really win? >> let me tell you how the story start. >> reporter: on monday the 37-year-old mother of seven told me she won mega millions and hid the winning ticket. her mcdonald's co-workers say they're entitled to some of that money. 15 pooled together and asked her to buy the tickets. she said she bought the tickets

at this 7 e8en a few blocks way. now she told me she sent a friend back to the same 7-eleven to buy a separate ticket for her. she claims that ticket has the winning numbers. >> are you going to claim the ticket? >> if i find it. >> did you lose the ticket? >> i misplaced it. >> you now have misplaced the ticket. >> i don't even know. >> mirlande reportedly said she hid the tickets in mcdonald's. >> near the fries? the hamburgers? the buns? the mcflurries? >> how is it going to be behind the mcflurry machine? >> reporter: maryland lottery officials say the ticket was bought at 7-eleven but no one has claimed it yet. >> here's the bottom line. did you win mega millions or did you make up this story to get attention? >> i did not make up no story to get no attention. >> reporter: maryland lottery officials say the winner has until september 28th to claim the winning ticket. the winner does not have to make their identity public. two other winning tickets were sold, in kansas and illinois. in baltimore, maryland i'm sham p.ari stone, news 4. now tie story about a real

win. the caps won tonight. they are now in the playoffs, folks. washington beat the florida panthers down at verizon center. we'll have a whole lot more to say about that coming up in our sports broadcast. a wild police chase across three jurisdictions ended in a violent crash near arlington cemetery today. six people were rushed to the hospital, and investigators say it all started because they were trying to chase down some suspected shoplifters at tyson's corner. jackie bensen's live in arlington with more. >> dorene, take a look. you can see this pole over here. that's what the vehicle hit. and by the time the suv struck this cast iron light pole and rolled over several times, the chase had already been called off. six people, including a little boy who appeared to be about 4 or 5 years old, were removed from the crumpled ford explorer and taken by ambulance to local hospitals. officials say their injuries are non-life-threatening. but it was a dramatic scene,

closing some lanes on memorial bridge for almost two hours during the evening commute. some were surprised to learn it began as a shoplifting investigation, miles away at tysons corner mall. >> fairfax police had their aviation unit airborne and were calling out the locations. the vehicle ended up coming into the district of columbia and drove around in d.c. for a little bit, and then it came back out of the district of columbia, across memorial bridge. this vehicle went into arlington cemetery with our aviation people above calling out the locations and our officers in the area. there was no pursuit at this time. >> reporter: a spokesman for fairfax county police told news 4 a shopping center officer made an initial stop but one of the suspects got back into the suv and took off. >> we're going to be working with the fairfax county police department to finalize the investigation. right now it looks like the vehicle may be a stolen vehicle and there may be some issues with stolen property in the vehicle. >> reporter: now, this area between memorial bridge and

arlington cemetery filled with people. tourists, spring break tourists. about 3:30, 4:00 this afternoon when this happened. luckily, no one was hit. dorene, back to you. >> okay. jackie bensen reporting from arlington. thanks, jackie. the so-called blo bandit pleaded guilty to a series of robberies and car jackings. 26-year-old stephen jie schwab admitted to carrying out three bank robberies and stealing the vehicles used in the holdups. schwab also admitted to participating in a heroin distribution ring in manassas. police arrested her last november after a chase on the beltway. she'll be sentenced in july. would you believe that after all this wonderful weather we've had noting issing there's actually a freeze warning out there for parts of the area? where and how old? >> freeze warning out to the west and that same area has a freeze watch for tomorrow night. so we're not just talking about one night of cold temperatures. we're talking about a couple of nights of cold temperatures. and that's not the end of the cold either. temperatures out there right now look at the difference. 37 in fredricksburg, 39 in

martinsburg, but still 52 at the airport and 50 in annapolis. yes, we are talking about a freeze warning to areas to the west of washington. i'll break it down for you. who has the freeze warning? who has the freeze watch for tomorrow? and just how cool are we talking about those temperatures? i'll show you that. plus the weekend forecast. the all-important holiday forecast coming up. governor of texas getting his first look at the destruction there. 13 tornadoes hit the dallas-fort worth area on tuesday. no one killed. but the damage is severe. and it is widespread. jim handly with more on this. >> despite the damage and destruction, community spirit remains strong in north texas. today hundreds of volunteers entered the disaster zones to help pick up the pieces and clear out the debris. texas governor rick perry got his first survey of the damage from the sky in the hard-hit community of lancaster. he noted a path of destruction that stretched seven miles long with the width of two football fields.

according to the national weather service, most communities had a 28-minute warning before tornadoes touched down. governor perry praised emergency responders for being ready. >> they played out a scenario. real-time. at the emergency operations center. almost identical to what happened. and having that ability to practice and to put in place, i will suggest to you saved lives in this community. >> reporter: while no one is putting a price tag on the damage, federal and state officials estimate it could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. jim and dorene? >> thanks, jim. four people are under arrest tonight accused of prostitution at a massage parlor in vienna. police say the arrests follow a two-month investigation of maple therapeutic massage on maple avenue in vienna. jam sook smith and yam un are charged with pandering and keeping a bawdy house. two other women are charged with prostitution.

the child sex abuse trial of former penn state football coach jerry sandusky is expected to begin two months from today. during a pretrial hearing today sandusky's attorney dropped his request to have the charges dropped. the defense says they will wait until prosecutors reveal new evidence in the case. sandusky is accused of abusing ten boys over a 15-year period. he has denied any wrongdoing. an apology today from d.c. councilman marion barry. he says he is sorry for criticizing asian-owned businesses in ward 8 and for calling them dirty shops. tom sherwood with the latest on the story first reported here on news 4. >> reporter: marion barry's comment about unwelcome asian shops that are "dirty" came tuesday night. >> we've got to do something about these asians coming in, opening up businesses, these dirty shops. they ought to go. i'm going to say that right now. but we need african-american businesspeople to be able to take their places too. >> reporter: in an interview

thursday barry insisted he wants all businesses to clean up in the city's poorest ward, saying more business owners need to hire locally and need to get involved in ward 8 as a community. >> now, i says asians. that wasn't being derogatory because that was just stating a fact of who's there. anybody who comes to ward 8, we're going to try to attract as many businesses as we can, as many restaurants as we can, as many corner stores as we can. they've got to be a part of the community. they can't come in here, take our money, take it to virginia somewhere, don't support little league, don't support nothing, and that's what i'm talking about doing, is making our community a better place to live. >> reporter: but late thursday barry issued a clear apology. "i am sorry that my choice of words in expressing my discontent with some of the asian business owners in my ward offended the asian american community and i am deeply

apologetic for any harm that i have caused." jamie baromeo, an asian american advocate for minority business owners nationwide, said barry shouldn't single out asians. >> for him to pit one group against the other was -- i was completely dumfounded by the remarks. he shouldn't have targeted one group. to say you want to clean up the businesses in ward 8 implies that you're looking at all the businesses, all the storefronts, not just one specific group. >> reporter: ward 6 council member tommy wells joined other city leaders in criticizing barry. >> when i saw the remarks, i was stunned. and part of the reason i was stunned is that marion barry is a civil rights hero icon. and that's not the kind of thing i would expect him to ever say. >> reporter: barry said as mayor he helped bring asian americans into the city government. tom sherwood, news 4. budget negotiators in virginia have agreed on a new $85 billion deal that will direct state spending for the next two years. the talks almost broke down after lawmakers argued over money to prevent sharp toll increases in northern virginia. a final vote will be done by april 17th.

it's the eve of a highly anticipated jobs report. this week marked the lowest number of americans claiming new unemployment benefits in four years. and retail sales reports are higher than expected. analysts are expecting to see about 200,000 new jobs created for the month of march nationwide. they say the unemployment rate may still go up slightly but that could actually signal that more people are once again looking for work. coming up at 11:00, some new images of a notorious killer. we'll show you how he looks after 40 years in prison. routine yard work sparks a huge house fire, and it could serve as a warning for the rest of us. also,

he was just outside trying to spruce up the yard, but ended up sparking a huge house fire in mclean. investigators say the homeowner's son was trying to start the lawnmower in the yard when a spark ignited some leaves and the leaves set the shed on fire. then the flames spread quickly. the fire continued down the fence line up the tree and right on to the side of the house. all four people inside the house made it out of there safely. there's no word yet on what all this damage is going to cost. there are some new pictures of charles manson now. they were taken by the california department of corrections back in june of 2011. they're just now being released because manson is scheduled for a parole hearing next week in los angeles. he was convicted back in 19 --

well, for the 1969 murder of an actress named sharon tate and six other people by a group of his followers. manson has been denied parole 11 times. less than a week after being fired by current tv, keith olbermann is now suing his former bosses. olbermann filed a breach of contract lawsuit in los angeles today. he claims the bad production values of his show hurt his reputation. and he says he's owed $70 million. olbermann left msnbc in january. he took the job at current tv. he was fired on friday. current tv owners say their relationship with olbermann "no longer reflected respect." matt lauer isn't going anyplace. the "today" show host has signed a new multier deal to stay on the show. the terms of the contract haven't been released but lauer's expected to pull in about $25 million a year. the new contract comes in the midst of rumors he wanted to leave the show. just yesterday matt and ryan

seacrest quipped about whether seacrest would take matt's place. lauer has been with the "today" show since 1997. nasas goi's going to bring retired space shuttle "discovery" on the back of a jumbo jet. they'll do that later this month. today the space agency flew two t-38 jets over the wash region. the pilots flew at 1500 feet to figure out the best path for the carrier jet to take. once the "discovery" is here, it will become part of the smithsonian air and space museum's collection out in chantilly, virginia. some incredible images today of a dust storm. this is not out in arizona or anything. that's on mars, folks. that thing extends 12 miles above the surface. the video was captured by a camera orbiting mars. even though it looks like a tornado, it is not. experts say it is similar to what we call a dust devil found here on earth. that stuff feeds off surface heat. d.c. forestry crews are trying to help the city smell a

in at 50 degrees. here's the freeze warning back to the west. martinsburg and frederick, maryland. the same area is under a freeze watch for tomorrow night. so we have not one but two cold nights ahead and two cold marinings. make sure you take care of your sensitive vegetation, whether you're covering it up or bringing it inside. we're going to see some chilly temperatures, maybe upper 20s to lower 30s in most locations but i'm not expecting too hard of a freeze. now, we do need rain. we have been very dry. we need the rain and i don't see any rain coming anytime soon. average rainfall through this time of year is normally over nine inches, but so far this year we've gotten a little bit over 5 1/2 inches. and we're almost four inches below average so far this year. we need to see some rain. and as i mentioned, i don't think we'll see any for the next week. maybe the next two. maybe some showers in there. but that is about it. storm 4 radar all dry. we have to go down to the south. and before you start to see some rain and a lot of it, in through tennessee, in through the kaurnlas. right around the masters, which dodged a pretty good bullet
