residential area of virginia beach today and burst into flames. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. that fighter jet hit an apartment building head on. the two pilots onboard ejected from the plane before impact. they are right now at virginia beach general hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. we know of four other people taken to the hospital also with minor injuries. so far officials say amazingly there have been no deaths associated with this crash. >> reporter: at least five apartment buildings were gutted by the crash or the fire that followed the crash of a navy fighter jet in virginia beach, virginia. it went down just blocks from the atlantic ocean, moments after take off from nearby naval air station oceania. >> it was an fa-18 d which is a two seat strike fighter. >> i looked up and could see the plane going straight up with no sound of engines and then i seen it pitch over and go down.

>> reporter: wreckage of the jet was scattered in the courtyard area of the complex. >> we have not had any reports from family members that say, hey, my loved one is missing or anything, so that's a good thing. >> reporter: both pilots ejected safely and were taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. the few injuries on the ground are also believed to be minor, which for now is what authorities find remarkable. given that the area is so densely populated and that most of the apartment units are usually occupied. just into our newsroom this afternoon this is believed to be the first picture of one of the pilots who ejected that plane. this is from our nbc affiliate in virginia beach. the man believed to be the pilot is just to the left of the police officer. we're also seeing the first picture of the canopy of the fighter jet, which came off when the pilots ejected. and we've got a first look at one of the parachutes which appears to have gotten hung up on a house. we heard from witnesses on the

ground that one neighbor actually had to help cut one of the pilots out of that chute when it got stuck on the building that later caught fire. some incredible pictures still coming in to news 4. rick santorum's campaign announced today that his 3-year-old daughter isabella is back in the hospital. she was born with a rare genetic condition that often proves fatal. in january she was hospitalized with pneumonia. a person familiar with the situation has told nbc news that the santorums keep medical equipment in their home in virginia and that they have a nurse on call. so isabella only goes to the hospital we're told when her condition is very serious. this news comes as santorum takes a few days off from the campaign to spend the easter holiday with his family. the controversy surrounding the killing of florida teenager trayvon martin has prompted lawmakers in that state to take a closer look now at the stand your ground law. it allows a person to use deadly force if they think they are in imminent danger. as jay gray reports, a month

after trayvon's death passions over this case are only becoming stronger. >> what do we want? >> reporter: tensions over the trayvon martin case stretched all the way to ohio today. students rallying around the frank w. hale jr. black cultural center after someone spray painted the building with the words "long live zimmerman" an apparent reference to george zimmerman the community watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed teenager. his legal team continues to say that martin initiated the confrontation and zimmerman only fired in self-defense. >> when you're going to get your head slammed on the ground after your nose is broken that is a good reason to have fear of imminent injury and you are entitled to use force including deadly force to protect yourself. >> reporter: a right provided by florida's stand your ground law. >> please repeal this law. >> reporter: state democrats, many who voted against the initial measure, have created a task force to examine the

controversial law. >> the police and prosecutors unanimously are opposed to stand your ground the way it's written. this immunity provision isn't a good thing. >> reporter: for many who testified at the first hearing thursday night the issue is much more personal. >> many of us no longer feel safe here. >> somebody doesn't even have to say any more than "but he hit me first." that's all that is required. and they get to go free. i lose my child. and he's a good boy. >> what do we want? >> justice! >> reporter: it's the same thing supporters have been saying about trayvon martin for more than a month now as both sides in this highly charged case prepare for the possibility a grand jury could review evidence and testimony early next week. jay gray, nbc news. >> prince george's county police are looking for a suspect today in the murder of a district heights woman. that woman was apparently found wednesday morning inside an apartment in the 2100 block of

brooks drive here. she's been identified as 32-year-old raquel israel. police tell us it appears she was strangled but at this time they have no suspects or motive. gas prices are way up and if you filled up today you probably paid at least four bucks for a gallon of regular. triple-a reports the national average is $3.94. in d.c. it's $4.19. maryland drivers are paying $4 while virginia commuters pay the least at $3.94. the hardest hit by the rising cost of gas are those who drive for a living. but many say there is nothing they can do about this. >> i'm spending like $65 for each day so it's really expensive. u know, it's really hard to pay. i mean, it's really hard, man. >> april is typically the beginning of peak driving season, so we can expect even higher prices at the pump through august. a first glance at the march

unemployment rate looks pretty good. it dropped 0.1% to 8.2. but a closer look at the new jobs report uncovers some worrisome details and in this election season, it is not what democrats were hoping to see. here's steve handelsman. >> reporter: it's mostly bad news for the recovery and for president obama's re-election bid. but he cheered the positive numbers. >> we welcome today's news that our businesses created another 121,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate ticked down. >> reporter: 8.2% unemployment in march sounds better than 8.3 last month. but overall more americans gave up looking for work and weren't counted. that's why the jobless rate improved. and 120,000 new jobs in march is far fewer than the 200,000 in february. good weather, the early spring, sent retail sales up. but retailers hired fewer

workers and confused economists. >> that's just not consistent with the reality of what was going on in the retail sectors. >> reporter: and even though warm weather is better for building, construction hiring dropped. another inexplicable downtick. there was less hiring in hospitals and clinics. >> it's clear to every american that there will still be ups and downs along the way and that we have got a lot more work to do. >> reporter: how might the downturn in march hurt barack obama? >> it's not bad enough to doom the president's re-election chances nor is it good enough to reassure him of a return to the white house. >> reporter: mitt romney said millions of americans are paying a high price for obama economic policies. factoring in march, it's been the best four months of hiring in two years. now the question is are we starting a new negative trend? i'm steve handelsman, news 4. j.c. penney is cutting about 900 jobs. the retailer announced today it

is looking to streamline operations and save about $900 million. 600 of the jobs will be at the company's headquarters in texas. the other 300 will be at the department store's call center in pittsburgh. j.c. penney is the nation's fourth largest department store. the 110-year-old retailer slashed prices earlier this year as part of a new pricing strategy. it appears virginia has avoided a government shutdown. >> lawmakers reached a tentative agreement on an $85 billion budget last night that'll keep the commonwealth operating for the next two years. negotiations nearly broke down over a dispute over funding that would prevent steep toll hikes on the dulles toll road. democrats have pushed for that additional money but republicans were able to keep it out of the final agreement. lawmakers will vote on the budget april 17th. >> a cool day across our area. get ready for a big chill. >> meteorologist doug kammerer joins us from the storm center with details on this friday. hey, doug. hello. we'll see a very chilly night

tonight. maybe one of the coolest in the past couple weeks. temperatures out there right now in the low 60s for the most part. many of you still in the upper 50s. a pretty nice shot though. blue skies. it is just beautiful out there as far as the sunshine is concerned. take a look at the numbers. currently sitting at 61 at the airport. winds though out of the north about 17 miles per hour. that makes for a little bit of a cool wind and it is gusting upwards of 20 to 30 miles an hour right now. 59 at gaithersburg and leesburg. down to the south. 62 degrees right now in fredericksburg. what are we seeing? storm 4 radar? no rain to show you. you have to go down toward the outer banks to catch some rain. that rain now moving into the atlantic and nothing in behind it. that means we will see a dry weekend and a nice couple of days. 45 by 11:00 tonight. by 5:00 tomorrow morning, temperatures around 38 degrees and then waking up tomorrow and stepping out the door we're talking about 7:00 a.m. with a temperature of about 39. most of you will wake up to temperatures around freezing and there are numerous freeze warnings in effect. much of the area under a freeze

justice. you step outside. you know what i'm talking about with the blue skies. temperatures right now 61 degrees with all that sunshine. winds out of the north at 17 miles an hour gusting to about 26 miles an hour so we are talking about a fairly gusty afternoon as we look out there and look at the numbers. can we look at them? there's the numbers. that's all right. taking a look at the numbers across the rest of the area. 59 degrees in leesburg. winchester and in gaithersburg. 62 in fredericksburg. temperatures at or just a little bit below average for this time of year. this is where we're supposed to be normally for this time of year but we've been so warm today actually feels fairly cool. it is going to be a cool night tonight. take a look at this. a freeze warning for just about everybody. the exception, southern maryland and the district as well as arlington county. we're not looking at freeze warnings there but everybody else under a freeze warning as temperatures will get very close to the freezing level. i do think we will see temperatures in the upper 20s back towards winchester.

maybe martinsburg and frederick. so tonight really could be a problem as far as getting your plants in. make sure you cover up any tender vegetation. you don't want to use plastic by the way. you want to just use a sheet if you have that just to be sure. storm 4 radar, no rain to talk about. we've been very dry. we're going to continue to be very dry. watch what happens when we widen out here. taking a look at the eastern half of the nation, one little storm. this is the storm that brought the tornadoes in texas, the rain last night through the southeast. that is it. the rest of the nation fairly dry at least the eastern two-thirds of the nation. this storm, however, is going to do a little loop up into canada and then help bring us some cold air into next week. so we're not done with that storm quite yet. sunny and cool conditions across the area today with that north lir wind. we will continue to see that wind out of the north tonight and tomorrow it will shift more out of the northwest. it will be rather breezy but mild tomorrow. temperatures into the mid 60s and then on sunday ahead of a cold front i think we get near 70 in many areas. so sunday, easter sunday is

(man) that you have all these people coming together for one common goal. (woman) the goal is to bring an end to breast cancer. (woman) the fund-raising was the easiest part. people were very giving. complete strangers wanting to help. if i can do this, you definitely can do this. and welcome back at 4:30. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. here's what's happening in the news at this hour. a navy fighter jet crashed into a cluster of apartments in virginia beach just after noon today. the two pilots onboard ejected from the plane before impact. both suffered nonlife threatening injuries. right now we know of four other injuries. all of them are minor. several apartments were destroyed. virginia governor bob mcdonald says they are working to provide immediate assistance to those impacted by the crash. the controversy over the killing of florida teen trayvon martin has lawmakers there taking a closer look at the stand your ground law. it allows someone to use deadly force if they think they are in imminent danger. a grand jury could review evidence and testimony in the martin case as early as next week. the new jobs report is out for march and it's not as positive as analysts expected. the labor department says

employers added just 120,000 jobs in march. more than 200,000 were expected. the unemployment rate fell slightly but economists say that's because some people gave up and stopped looking for work. her story has captured national headlines but now the mcdonald's worker from baltimore says she has lost her winning ticket. >> this is the story that keeps on giving and it's one that you saw first on 4 as shomari stone reports now she is still standing by her story that she is a winner. >> reporter: she refused to talk to the media but now wants to set the record straight in this exclusive interview. she's stressed out after making national headlines claiming to win the $105 million after taxes. did you really win the lotto or did you make up the story? >> i didn't make up the story. >> reporter: did you really win? >> let me tell you how the story start. >> reporter: on monday the 37-year-old mother of seven told me she won megamillions and hid

the winning ticket. her mcdonald's co-workers said they're entitled to some of that money. 15 of them pooled together and asked her to byte tickets. she says she bought the tickets at this 7-eleven a few blocks away. she also told me she sent a friend back to the 7-eleven to buy a separate ticket for her. she claims that ticket has the winning numbers. are you going to claim the ticket? >> if i find it. >> reporter: did you lose the ticket? >> i misplaced it. >> reporter: you now have misplaced the ticket. >> i don't even know. >> reporter: she reportedly said she hid the ticket in mcdonald's. near the fries, the hamburgers, the buns, the mcflurries? >> i don't know where you get the story from. how i hide it behind the mcflurry machine? >> reporter: maryland lottery officials say the ticket was bought at the 7-eleven. no one has claimed it yet. the bottom line, did you win megamillions or make up this story to get attention? >> i did not make up no story to get attention. >> reporter: officials say the winner has until september 28th

to claim the winning ticket and does not have to make their identity public. two other winning tickets were sold in kansas and illinois. in baltimore, maryland, shomari stone, news 4. take a look at this live picture of this whopping check they've just unveiled in kansas where there is a megamillions winning ticket. they are set to come forward any minute. we understand they're going to remain anonymous but lottery officials know who they are. they are in kansas and holding this news conference right now. this kansas ticket is one of three that matched the winning numbers. each ticket is worth about $219 million. as you see on there, anonymous jackpot, they are not coming forward and no one has come forward yet to claim the winning ticket in illinois either. you've only got 11 days to go before your tax returns are due. so what are you going to do if you get a big refund this year? according to yahoo finance, 42% of the people asked say they're

going to put their tax return money toward credit card debt. experts say if you get a tax return of more than $3,000, you should adjust your withholdings. that means your pay checks would have a little more in them, which in turn would help you eliminate your debt earlier. >> if you're getting anything higher than that it probably means you're paying the irs too much out of every single paycheck. that way you can actually save and pay off debt throughout the year rather than waiting once a year to get your lump sum and, you know, have at it. >> another interesting part of the survey, 84% of women say they would rather have $10,000 bucks in the bank than have jennifer aniston's body. tot is voluntarily recalling its bicycle carrier seats. children's fingers can get caught in the hinge and mechanism and get cut. the company says it has received

from the pollen? >> no. >> i'm really suffering. i feel like they're -- >> it is really, really bad out there. and the only thing that's going to help us is we're talking about how dry we'll be again and i don't see any good chances for rain for at least the next week, maybe the next two. it's the kind of pattern that we're in and unfortunately it doesn't help with the pollen. however, if we did get the rain then the pollen would be worse a couple days later. so it's kind of a catch-22 this time of year. you know you'll be dealing with it. out there right now take a look at the blue skies. it is just beautiful. there is the reason for all the pollen. it's the trees out there right now. pollen levels very high today. they will be very high tomorrow. they may come down a touch on sunday but once again don't expect any relief across the area. temperature right now 61 degrees. dew point of 22 so a very dry atmosphere. winds out of the north at 17 miles an hour gusting to 25 and even close to 30 miles an hour across the area. that's making things feel a little bit cool.

this is zetterbergy little. he is gaining a lot of popularity online for making a marathon look like a walk in the park. the 25-year-old runner is called the ridiculously photo genic guy. the photo was taken during a 10-k race in charleston, south carolina. everyone around him looks tired and sweaty but he is sporting a care free smile barely popping a sweat. the photo has been viewed more than a million times on flicker. >> maybe he just cut in there five seconds before. >> i don't know how it is that he looks like that after running marathons. a british columnist is facing back lash for her article about beautiful women. samantha brick says other women hate her because she is so

police in moorhead decided to return the tip to stacy nutson after she sued. she says a customer told her to keep a take out container left at the restaurant where she worked inside. it was 12,000 bucks. at the time she told police they said she could keep it if no one claimed it in 60 days. the time came and went and then police said she couldn't get the money back because it was part of a drug investigation. well, all that changed according to her lawyer. whether it was unaware as she believes or i believe or it was some citizen who gave her the money or they lost it the fact of the matter is justice has been done. some wonderful people have done the right things. >> nutson believes her customer left the anonymous gift because her family has been facing a financial hardship. stay right there. we're coming right back on news 4 at 4:00. a child's emotional letter to the victim of an accidental

the applause of the hospital staff who saved her life. a great day for the 9-year-old when she traded in her feeding tubes for a little soup and would later walk a few steps. >> this is a photo taken in the operating room when they were fixing your elbow. >> reporter: after five separate surgeries totaling 16 hours on the operating table and the bullet casing still lodged near her spine. and when she got home, this was waiting for her. a child's handwriting on lined school paper. the first lines, dear amina i'm sorry i hurt you because i brought a gun to school. the 9-year-old boy's own words says his uncle and legal guardian patrick cochran. >> absolutely. he wrote every word of that himself. that is exactly how he feels. >> reporter: and you believe what he wrote? >> absolutely. >> reporter: wasn't writing it for effect? >> not at all. >> reporter: the rest of what he wrote, i did not mean for anyone to get hurt. i wish you were out of the hospital playing basketball and going back to school. i wish everyone was okay. i made a bad choice. for amina's parents her father an ish war vet it had been a terrible vigil as she fought through the devastation of a bullet that shattered her elbow

and tore through her body requiring the replacement of her entire blood supply. sheench the boy pled guilty in juvenile court admitting that he dropped his book bag where he had hidden the gun and it went off. he said he'd taken it during a visit to his mother's house. she is an ex-con and along with her boyfriend has now been charged with assault and firearms charges because of the school shooting. they both pled not guilty. along with counseling and a year's probation writing a letter of apology was part of the boy's sentence. amina's family lawyer says it counts for little. >> it's not going to help her walk. she is barely walking. it's not going to help her go back to school. it's not going to help her get the physical rehabilitation for her shattered arm or the infections and problems she'll have in her abdomen from the bullet wounds. >> reporter: but the boy's reaction seeing amina on tv leaving the hospital? >> he was crying. he was happy. he also cried because he has a lot of guilt about what happened
