a navy fighter jet crashed into an apartment complex in virginia beach today.

there are currently three unaccounted for. however officials believe they may have been traveling. the f-18 suffered what is called catastrophic mek ck mechanical malfunction. two navy pilots. student and instructor dumped fuel and ejected just before the jet careened into the apartment complex. we have team coverage on the dramatic jet crash tonight. >> we begin at the scene right now, shamari stone is in virginia beach now with more on what happened down there today. >> reporter: people in virginia beach say it is remarkable no one was seriously injured. the navy jet fighter crashed on the other side of trees over there causing five buildings to catch on fire. the scene was terrifying as black smoeshke billowed out of buildings. moments after a navy jet fighter on a training mission crashed. it took off from nearby air

station oceana. >> i looked up. i could see the plane going straight up with no sounds of engine and pitch over and go down. >> reporter: there are three people unaccount ford tonight but not classified as missing. investigators haven't been able to make physical contact with them at this time a round, 40 apartment units are damaged or destroyed. wreckage was scattered throughout the courtyard. take a look at ejection seats. both pilots. instructor, student got out in time before the crash. only receiving minor injuries. this man rushed to help one of the pilots. >> he had blood coming out of his -- nose. make sure he didn't have any broken bones. he apologized for, for -- crashing into our complex. and i -- chuckled and, told him don't worry about it. we're alive. we'll get you out of here fast as we can. >> the navy said the jet is assigned to strike squadron. >> initial indications are that the aircraft suffered a

catastrophic mechanical malfunction. >> reporter: a few residents had minor injuries. in a written statement, virginia governor bob mcdonald says -- >> reporter: investigators have a lot of work to do. they will examine the scene and try to figure out what caused this failure. in virginia beach, shomari stone, news 4. >> jim handley continues our coverage. jim. >> reporter: as bad as the scene looks emergency personnel say it could have been a lot worse. witnesses saw fuel being dumped from the jet before it went on un. jet fuel found on vehicles and buildings in the area. that step may have prevented an even bigger explosion. and more importantly, saved countless lives. the jet that crashed has had problems in the past, the same model f-18 crashed in '08 in california. the crash killed a family of four and destroyed two homes.

no one has been injured. the incident also has the the eastbound lanes of university boulevard near 23rd avenue completely shut down. the family of a man who shot, was shot and killed, while handing out pizza fliers unnortheast d.c., is telling news 4 that man should not have been out there alone. the murder happened in february. it is still unsolved. jack gee bie benson with more. jackie? >> at the time of hiss murder there had been a series of armed street robberies in that area. now this crime has so unnerved fellow papa john's employees that some of them have quit. >> this 19-year-old, frankie, died for a $14 paycheck. carlos rivas says that's how much his brother earned handing out door tag fliers for papa john's pizza the day he was shot in the head near 10th and

gallowton, northeast. police think the crime may have been attempted robbery. >> heap just started working for papa johns. so he worked in, the pizzashop, making pizzas. some times out to promote. he was passing out door hangers. >> a witness described the young man being marched down the street with his hand behind his head like a captured soldier followed by two men. a gunshot rang out. carlos rivas says his brother, a graduate in prince george's county was working to help support his beloved baby son. >> we don't want him, the sich wau situation to be forgot any body else's brother, kid, father. >> the rivas family will be at the scene of the murder, 10th and gallowton streets, north east. 6:00 saturday evening. they hope to talk to people in the area. there is a $25,000 reward for

information in this case. reporting from d.c. police headquarters, jackie benson, news 4. back to you. >> jackie, thank you. the man believed to be behind a large drug smuggling ring into dulles international airport got a 14 year prison sentence today. 62-year-old edward mccauley orchestrate the the scheme, convicted of sneaking $800,000 worth of heroin past security. recruited people from ghana who lived in the u.s. to act as curry errs. the smugglers tries various ways to get drugs through security. they built compartments into their carry-on luggage and underwear. one person sewed two pounds of heroin into a wig. hearings under way in florida to review the controversial law at the center of the trayvon martin case. george zimmerman's lawyers say his killing of the unarmed black teenager is covered by the stand-your-ground law. it allows someone to use deadly force legally if they think they're in imminent danger.

a stand your ground task force has been listening to testimony on the law from concerned citizens. lawmakers will decide whether to repeal the law as early as the next week. no one has been arrested in connection with the february shooting of trayvon martin. >> there was mixed reaction from ward 8 residents after council member marian berry called asian businesses in ward 8 dirty shops. councilman barry made the comments on primary night. yesterday he apologized. while many people in the asian community were offended, one business owner we talked with today says, barry has the a legitment argument. >> if you look in front of the stores, there is not too many stores being swept, the windows are dirty, if you look on the ceiling tiles, take a picture of the ceiling tiles you can see mold, dust. >> councilman barry says while he apologizes for singling out asians he feels that all businesses in ward 8 can do better to keep their businesses

top manager. >> things returning to normal for sports department at howard university. all of the student athletes who have been declared ineligible to compete have been reinstated. spring sports teams will participate for the rest of the season. university withheld an unknown number of athletes from the games last friday. it was part of an, internal investigation, of possible violation of ncaa rules. maryland's house of delegates sharing its plan for a new national harbor casino. the plan in the house wad lou table games at newt casino. no slot machines. casino operators would get 85% of the revenue. the state would get the rest at the new national harbor facility if there is one. the state's share would go to prince george's county. the state senate is now -- trying to rework its version of the bill. lawmakers are hoping to pass a bill, before the assembly adjourns on monday. even if it does pass though, voters would have to sign off on

beautiful night. all across the area. temperatures are falling. but not very quickly. and that's some good news for all the people that were out and about tonight. temperatures in most areas in the 40s and 50s. high temperature today, 62 degrees. low this morning, 42 degrees. today, the first day this month, actually, below average. even though we are at 62,average high is 63 degrees. freeze warning tonight. yeah, freeze warning, encompasses a large area to the west. still 54 out there. and this is why. we still have a little bit of wind, wind out of the northeast at 12 miles an hour. any time you have that wind it just keeps that air moving. and it does not allow it to cool quickly. although the dew point is 23 degrees. that tells you right there, dry atmosphere will allow things to cool when wind die down. they're expected to over the next cup hours. 41 in frederick. 48, manassas. 48 in culpeper. culpeper, 39 two hours ago. little wind. that wind, mixed the air up a little bit. bringing it up to 48.

we'll continue to see temperatures cool. as a result, that's why we have the freeze warning in effect. fairfax, montgomery. south and west. some areas will get close to the freezing mark. and below. maybe 30 degrees. talking about one of the coolest mornings we have seen in quite some time. satellite, radar, showing clear skies across the area. we are seeing nothing out there in regards to rain. once again wreshl, we need to s. boston, jacksonville, back to saint louis, chicago. 100% clear. no rain at all. i don't see any real chances for rain. and the pollen sufferers need to see rain. i don't see a good chance of it for well over a week. we have a couple chance for showers. no real good chance for rain. we saw plenty of sunshine today. cool temperatures. tomorrow, however, the mild air returns. i think we will see temperatures back into the mid to upper 60s tomorrow. and then on sunday, with plenty of sunshine. early. we will see nice warm temperatures, as a cold front makes its way toward us.

that cold front will bring in a few more clouds in the afternoon. it will allow many of you to warm up to 70 degrees. after the cold front moves through. monday looking good. but then we will see changes during the day on tuesday. maybe a chance of a shower on monday. right now. most of the day. should be on the dry side. tomorrow morning. clear skies. cold start. get out the coats. 29 to 38 degrees. tomorrow afternoon. take a look at these numbers. 61-67 degrees. plenty of sunshine. still a little bit on the breezy side. wind of 10, 20 miles an hour. that will not hurt temperatures sunday. look at that. 68, might as well go 70 sunday. monday, 67. 59, tuesday. wednesday also in the 50s. looking at a fairly cool pattern. maybe one of the cooler patterns that we have seen, in about the last month and a half to two months. >> get out there. >> about the color of the first spring flowers. the pink flowers. >> exactly right, doreen. glad. >> is that what -- >> my facebook page. >> that's it. got it right off your face book
