i looked up and i could see the plane going straight up with no sound of engines, and then i seen it pitch over and go down. >> a navy fighter jet falls from the sky and crashes right into a virginia apartment complex. this morning we're learning that crash could have been a whole lot worse. thanks for starting your weekend with us. i'm richard jordan. >> and i'm angie goff. welcome on this saturday, april 7th. straight to our top story. a catastrophic mechanical malfunction is how the navy describes what caused a fighter jet to crash into a virginia beach apartment complex.

>> seven people were hurt. it happened in the hampton roads area which has a large concentration of military bases. the impact sent balls of fire through the apartment complex. the f-a-18 crashed virginia beach on a training exercise. a student and instructor both ejected from the jet just with before impact. one man rushed to help one of the pilots. >> he had some blood coming out of his nose. i made sure he didn't have any broken bones. he apologized for crashing into our complex. and i chuckled and told him, don't worry about it. we're alive and we'll get you out of here as fast as we can. >> the navy is trying to determine exactly what went wrong. this morning fire officials are trying to find three people still unaccounted for from that navy jet crash. investigators don't believe they're missing but rather may not have been home at the time

of the incident. the impact set five on fire. it scattered throughout the court yard. fire officials said some 40 apartment units were damaged or destroyed. some people heard the jet go down. >> when i heard the first boom, i thought it was like they were breaking the sound barrier, but they don't do that here. and then it sounded like something was cartwheeling. what the heck? >> and all of a sudden i saw stuff start to fly off the plane and i realized at that point it was a catapult top, and then all of a sudden i heard had it real loud crash. >> fire officials say the jet dumped most of its fuel right before the crash and that likely prevented a larger fire. virginia governor bob mcdonnell expressed his thoughts on the crash saying, quote, i live just a couple miles from the site of that crash also in the flight path. you know the great pride our

tonight handing out fliers and looking for think information in his murder. back in february he was shot to death at 10th street while handing out fliers for pizza. police say it was part of an attempted robbery. revis' brother says frankie was working his job to help support his 2-year-old son. >> and the whole situation be forgotten because this could be anybody else's kid, anybody else's brother, anybody else's father. >> in addition to frankie's family canvassing the area tonight, there is a $25,000 reward for anyone with information about the crime. today protesters will gather in sanford and around the country including d.c. to demand justice for trayvon martin's murder. it's part of the million hoodies march which calls for the arrest of george zimmerman. they will meet at malcolm x park at noon. meanwhile, a new defense lawyer for zimmerman offered a new

explanation for his client's actions. he says zimmerman may have suffered injuries similar to shaken baby syndrome because of martin. there are reports he broke his nose and slammed his head on the ground and zimmerman was acting in self-defense. >> building a metro line to dulles may cost northern virginia drivers more money. the dulles rail project is moving into phase two but lawmakers interest richmond have slashed half of the fund iing f it. $300 million intended to keep tolls down was recent ly pulled from the budget. virginia governor bob mcdonnell told house and senate negotiators he'd stick to his pledge to fund $150 million but no more. state senator mark herring says the move could sway over governments to turn away from the project. >> the decision reveals an alarming lack of division about transportation and i'm concerned that it seriously puts the ro je project this jeopardy.

>> why would people want to work here? live here? we will be killing our communities with this. >> this is how it breaks down. without the funding tolls could reach $4.50 by 2014. now right now drivers pay $2.25. tuesday the fairfax county board of supervisors is scheduled to vote for its support of the project. the house and senate will vote on the virginia budget april 17th. maryland's house is scrambling to put a plan together to bring table games to the state. a current proposal would allow table games across the state including at a new casino at national harbor. that location, however, would not have slots. casino operators would get 85% of revenue. the rest would go to the state except where the county would get the state's cut. the senate and house have little time to settle l differences. the general assembly ends monday and even if if the bill passes, voters would have to sign is off on it in a statewide referendum.

it may take maryland's highest court to decide if maryland's same-sex couple can get a divorce. they want the legal separation in maryland though they got married in california. it is not technically legal there yet. news 4's jane watrel has both sides of the case. >> reporter: lawyers for the same sex couple told maryland court of appeals it would be unprecedented for the state not to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere and deny their clients a divorce. >> couples who have marriages celebrated in states of the union where they have been deemed valid by law, where they've been accepted by law, because otherwise what you have is a hodgepodge. >> reporter: in 2008 jessica port and virginia ann cowan married in san francisco. two years later they decided to seek a divorce. a prince george's county judge refused to do so saying the california marriage isn't legal in maryland so no divorce could

be granted. >> emotionally it's hard, hard to be tied to someone when you parted ways and can't move forward with your life. >> we are one maryland. >> reporter: the case comes on the heels of legislation of same-sex marriage in maryland of next year. but first it must survive a november referendum which voters. lawyers for the couple told the seven-member court this is a separate issue. >> i feel like the judges really focused in on the key legal issues here, and i think they really understand what we are asking them to do and what we're not asking them to do. we just want them to apply the same rule to this couple they apply to everyone else. >> reporter: they are hoping the junction will issue a warning by june and end the couple's legal limbo. in annapolis, jane watrel, news 4. six states and the district of columbia currently allow gay couples to marry. >> that's a hot topic. a lot of people watching that one.

it's a case of good news/bad news with the latest jobs report. the unemployment rate did go down slightly from 8.3% to 8.2%. close to 100,000 fewer jobs than expected were added. president obama says this proves the economy is still a long way from completely recovering. >> it's clear to every american that there will still be ups and downs along the way, and that we have a lot more work to do. >> republican leaders slammed the president on the low number of jobs created. mitt romney called the report weak and that the unemployment number dropped because so is many people simply stopped look ing for jobs. there's also good news for the housing market in our area.

the national association of home builders says the washington metro area has shown measurable improvement for at least the past six months. the group looks at employment levels and home prices, both of which are on the rise. our area hasn't recovered as quickly as others but experts say any kind of improvement is a good thing. a new poll amongst super delegates shows mitt romney will win the republican nomination. despite romney not being close to the number of required delegates, it appears he'll win the nomination anyway. a new associated press poll asked 114 of the 120 republican national committee super delegates who would you pick? in the latest survey romney grabbed 35 endorsements, more than the other three candidates combined. the republican nominee needs 1,344 delegates to secure the nomination. rick santorum's aides insist their candidate, though, is staying in the race. the former senator is taking a break from the campaign trail this weekend, and he has not

made any major media buys going forward. he is unincreasing pressure to drop out of the race before pennsylvania's primary in two and a half weeks. he trails in most polls in pennsylvania which is his home state. santorum's advisers say he has a busy week of campaigning ahead of him. they plan on releasing a schedule of those events very soon. two occupy d.c. sites could become one. according to "the washington post," protesters at freedom plaza are considering joining the demonstration at mcpherson square. it could happen in the next week or so. a spokesperson with national mall and memorial parks told "the post" a perfect miss for occupy d.c. at freedom plaza expires april 29th. other groups have is reserved the space for spring and summer events. protesters say they might have is an information at the plaza. spring sports are back in swing at howard university. the number of students sus is pended for violating ncaa rules. those students have since been

reinstated and games have resumed. hu would not say how many students were suspended. the university plans to continue with an internal investigation into other possible rule violations. one of the winners in the mega millions jackpot has claimed their prize but we may never know their identity. the winner in kansas came forward to collect their share of the $656 million jackpot. kansas law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous. the executive director for the kansas lottery said the winner chose to stay private because they don't need the publicity. the winner took a single cash payment of $158 million leaving them with only $110 million after taxes. only. >> only. and you can tell by that pac-man hat if it was a girl or a guy. >> it's anonymous. another part of the super rich, super elite. they need a little privacy. >> what about the mcdonald's woman who says she lost her ticket? >> oh, let's not give her the time.

a japanese ghost ship that drifted across the pacific to the coast of alaska now lies 6,000 feet under water. the u.s. coast guard fired heavy ammunition at the ship. four hours later it sank. the ghost ship was supposed to go to the scrap yard when japan's deadly earthquake and tsunami hit last year. the coast guard says the ship was causing problems for other ships in the area because it had no lights and was floating in high traffic shipping lanes. we're following some breaking news out of pakistan. rescuers are searching for as many as 100 soldiers buried in an avalanche. the avalanche smashed into a pakistani army base on a himalayan glacier on the border with india. there are no reports of any deaths or injuries at this point. we are working to learn more about the rescue and will bring you more details as they become available. as millions celebrate the beginning of passover by gathering around the sadr table they were joined by the first

family, they hosted it at the white house last night led by jewish members of the obama administration. it took place in the old family dining room. passover lasts eight days and commemorates the story of exodus in which the israelites were freed from slavery in egypt. and for the first time in 50 years cuban catholics are able to celebrate the easter weekend. cuba ended religious holidays after the 1959 revolution that put fidel castro in power. the good friday and east wrer declared government sanctioned holidays this year after a request by pope benedict xvi during his recent visit to the island nation. cubans filled the streets of havana to act out the stations of the cross. a mass was also broadcast on state tv and christmas was not reinstated as a holiday until 1998 at the request of pope john paul ii. a church sermon isn't is usually described as a blockbuster event. >> but this sunday a texas

with sunshine today, 100% sunshine, as andrew was mentioning. highs climbing up into the mid-60s for a time. tomorrow also looks very nice and a touch warmer as well. no rain anywhere nearby. in fact, the nearest rain showers to us are a long, long way out into the middle of the country. central parts of oklahoma and kansas heading 0 out to omaha and kansas city this morning. that's where the showers and the thunderstorms can be found, but they're nowhere close to us and they won't be think where near her for several days to come either as high pressure is in charge. so today we have a north to northwesterly breeze. 24 miles an hour this afternoon, overnight tonight clear skies. the wind lays down a little bit so another chilly start on your easter sunday morning but another beautiful day coming tomorrow. a moisture starved cold front could bring a few spotty showers to the mountains of west virginia late tomorrow afternoon. maybe into parts of southern pennsylvania as well. i think we'll remain rain free here in the washington area. so for today mostly sunny. abc huetly delightful day to get outside. a bit breezy at times, though.

welcome back to news 4 today. i'm richard jordan. >> and i'm angie goff. taking a look at this morning's top stories, the navy is investigating what possibly malfunctioned causing a fighter jet to crash into an apartment complex in virginia beach. seven people were hurt including the two pilots. no one, thank tli, though, was killed. emergency officials say they found all but three people. investigators believe those unaccount unaccounted for may not have been home at the time of the crash. today family members of a murdered maryland teen are asking for help in solving the crime. back in february frankie rivas was shot to death in northeast d.c. while handing out fliers for pizza. his family is pleading for witnesses to come forward. there's a $25,000 reward for anyone with information about the crime. maryland is trying to push a table games bill through before the end of the general assembly. the latest version would put table games throughout the state but no slots at a new national harbor casino.

it also gives operators 85% of the revenue with the rest going to the state. lawmakers have until monday to pass the bill. the fallout continues for marion barry's comments about asian storefronts in ward 8. the d.c. councilmember and former mayor called the businesses dirty. we found some people who disagreed but at least one resident who says barry has a point. >> reporter: the residents of d.c.'s ward 8 and the business community caught in the controversy over a comment. the neighborhood's stores and restaurants, many with thick, bulletproof glass and loose ceiling tiles called dirty. ward 8 councilman marion barry said that. >> we have to do something about these asians coming in opening up businesses with dirty shops. they ought to be. i'll just state that right now. we need african-american business people to be able to take their places, too. >> reporter: the comment upset some in the asian business community, but there are others who say the remark was right on. >> they all are dirty.

>> reporter: donnie operates a mobile phone store. the shop was recently renovated but he says many of his neighbors fail to keep up. >> if you look in the front of the stores, there are not too many being swept. the windows are dirty. if you look on the ceiling tiles, if you take a picture of the ceiling tiles, you can see mold, dust. >> reporter: he points to the restaurants right up the block. >> i've been to some of these restaurants, and order food from those closest to me. yes, i wonder sometimes. >> reporter: the workers there take offense. >> yeah, it's wrong. >> reporter: the owner says the appearance speaks for itself. >> i don't want to eat there just for the look of the store, the mold, the cracked ceiling tile. >> barry says while he apologizes for singling out asians, he feels all businesses in ward 8 can do better to keep their businesses clean. a candidate for d.c. city council is also calling out barry for his comments. biddle who is still fighting for

the at-large seat responded to the comments on the kojo nnamdi show on wamu's "political hour" and down played a potential race split this his race for a council seat. >> i think those comments are unacceptable. we have an increasingly diverse city, and when you begin to make comments like that, you only exacerbate it. there's no place for it in our city. >> is there a racial divide? >> so that's an interesting question. i don't know because we don't know -- >> you don't know? >> there may be a racial or class divide as we're seeing in the electorate. i don't know because i'm not actually interviewing each individual voter to find out who they vote for. >> biddle trails orange by 543 votes with a few thousand absentee ballots left to be counted. a "washington post" map shows a geographic and racial split in tuesday's primary with biddle receiving primarily the white vote.

new this morning, prince george's county police are investigating an accident involving one of their own. the accident happened on the inner loop of the beltway near the baltimore-washington exit. lu luckily no serious injuries but the southbound lanes were shut down for an hour while crews careened up that scene. prince william county police say bottle bombs are becoming a dangerous are problem in one particular thabd. two of the homemade explosives recently turned up in the lake ridge area. bottle bombs are often made out of corrosive chemicals that can cause severe burns and permanent injuries. police say anyone caught making the explosives will fade charges and pay for damages and emergency response if needed. the death of an infant left out in the freezing cold back in january is now a homicide. the child was found along channing street in northeast on one of the coldest nights of the year of the she was about a week old and wrapped only in a thin towel. that towel is one of the few

clues police say they have it to work with. they are asking for help from the community in hopes of solving the case. the man believed to be behind a large drug smuggling ring in dulles will spend more than a decade in prison. 62-year-old edward mccollie was sentenced yesterday. a jury convicted him of sneaking about $800,000 worth of heroin past security. prosecutors say he recruited people from ghana who lived in the u.s. to act as couriers. the smugglers tried various ways to get the drugs through security. they built compartments into their carry-on luggage and underwear. one person sewed two pounds of heroin in a a wig. federal officials are trying to decide if an air traffic controller should face disciplinary action for mistaken a pilot's call for help as a joke. listen to a few parts of that call. >> emergency, smoke in the cockpit, roll trucks, please. >> who was that? >> 5912. >> did you hear that?

>> yeah. >> i know that's bs, i know it is. >> you know what? >> united 12. you know united 12 anywhere. >> that pilot was trying to report smoke in the cabin and land at denver international. at one point as many as two minutes lapsed before the control tower responded to the pilot. analysts say the controller misunderstood by simply just mistaking that flight number. >> very complex because we've had these bogus in the past, whatever the controller was doing, he was distracted enough not to hear the 59 but only the 12 and then built a whole scenario around a bogus flight number. >> once emergency crews responded, medics took one passenger to the hospital. the ntsb is investigating as well as the faa. violence is reportedly rising in syria despite a ceasefire that is to begin in less than a week. this video purports to show a village near the turkish border

being bombarded by syrian forces. opposition activists say even though syrian president al asad has agreed publicly to a ceasefire, the violence has only intensified. the deal made by special u.n. envoy cove qui annan calls for syrian forces to with draw from cities and stop using deadly force by thursday. peace talks are again supposed to begin. american painter thomas kinkade has died. he was known for his brush work paintings of landscapes, cottages and churches. kinkade claimed to be the nation's most collected living artist. he had calendars and figurines. at one point he said his work was in 10 million u.s. homes. the artist lived in san fran stran. thomas kinkade was 54 years old. his family said he died of natural causes. the time is now 6:38. a warning for mac users. the virus that's affecting thousands of computers and what apple is doing to keep your computer safe.

look at the waitress. >> okay. this was a scene at an illinois red lobster back in december, all because, get this, of a messed up order. this video just surfaced showing four women attacking a waitress because she brought them the wrong meals. police arrested one woman with two felonies and are expected to file charges against the other three soon. and the server suffered a swollen eye and minor cuts interest that attack. unbelievable. the strange saga of keith olbermann versus current tv took another strange turn. the network filed a counter suit against their former anchor saying they don't owe him any more money. olbermann sued the company saying they owe him more than

welcome back. the easter bunny can apparently make it rain marshmallows. the little puffs came raining down in an easter tradition in detroit and the kids go wild. the baskets in hand, the kids rushed to pick up the marshmallows falling from a helicopter at wayne county park. for every marshmallow they picked up, the kids were able to exchange it for a gift for the easter bunny.
