teenager in the middle of the afternoon. good evening, i'm chris gordon, first we begin with the weather. after a mild winter, we may have a cold start to easter. some of us may see frost. chuck bell is in storm center four. hi, chuck. >> good evening to you. good evening, everyone. clear skies, bone dry air in place and a fading breeze for what has set the stage for a very cold start on your easter morning. the weather service has posted freeze warnings now for locations essentially along to the west of i-81. it includes carroll county and much of the shenandoah valley. temperatures for now are holding in the upper 40s and low 50s as of the 11:00 hour, with a few mid level clouds coming in. if you care about it, could beer

it up. we'll talk about the 7-day forecast coming up in a few more minutes. >> all residents are accounted for and everyone is out of the hospital after a fiery fighter jet crash in virginia beach. the navy plane slammed into an apartment building shortly after takeoff yesterday. the two pilots ejected before impact. five others on the ground suffered minor injuries. we're hearing for the first time about how civilians came to the pilot's rescue after the crash, pulling them from the dangerous flames. >> it's like a miracle has occurred here with no victims. >> it was an amazing display in virginia beach of what citizenship really means. >> a mechanical failure is believed to have caused the crab, they're still investigating. 40 apartments were damaged or destroyed. the navy is dipping into a special fund to help residents. governor mcdonald has promised

aide at the state level. a good neighbor sabed three people from a burning home in fairfax county today. the fire started just before 9:00 p.m. in the 9200 block in reporten. a girl in a neighboring home saw the fire and told her father. his name is bill kim. mr. kim web with the to the house telling everyone to get out. two adults, a child and a dog were inside the the time. they escaped just moments before flames engulfed the front door. an unattended candle outside the home probably started the fire. d.c. police are searching for the men who shot three young people playing a game of dice today. it happened in the 100 block of o street near florida avenue in northwest washington. one of the victims was just 15 years old. as darcie spencer reports, a woman who lives in the neighborhood says the victims don't cause the trouble but she believes their gambling makes them a potential target.

>> how many shots do you think you heard? >> nine or ten shots. >> on this warm, sunny, saturday afternoon, a group of young people were gambling with dice in this courtyard area behind the apartment buildings in the 100 block of q street. that's when a group of men approached, at least one with a gun and opened fire. three victims were shot, one was just 15 years old. >> 10:00 after 3:00, it looks like we had a group of kids here playing craps. we had four suspects that came out in dark clothing. >> this woman says she knows some of the victims, they're neighborhood teens who don't cause trouble but their gambling makes them a potential target. >> people know they're out here gambling, so they fry their hand. >> you think it was probably a robbery? >> probably. >> reporter: neighbors say they want police to do more about the

gangbling and the trouble it attracts. >> you've seen them playing craps out here before? >> you would think this is charlestown, the casino. this is every day, 24-7. >> do the police need to do more? they need to do more to break it up. police comb the area for evidence. a canine was brought in in the help for potential suspects. this man called 911. >> i came out, i looked across here, i seen people laying down, you know, like some people limping and what not. i just give somebody some assistance. >> reporter: all three victims were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. they're all expected to survive. in northwest washington, darcie spencer, news 4. police have identified a toddler hit and killed by a car in front his house today. ethan guzman was playing outside

his home on 85th place in new carollton. he was hit by a car around 3:00 p.m. the driver stayed on the scene and likely didn't see the child when the accident happened. >> the guy in the van was coming out the parking lot, and he turned in and the kids were playing open the sidewalk, and the ball bounced off the sidewalk and web with the across the street. the little kid darted after it. >> the child was taken to the hospital where he later died. the department's collision analysis team is investigating. a push to bring gambling to national harbor got backing today in the senate. table games would be allowed there and at the five authorized maryland casinos. yesterday the house approved an

alternate bill that would allow table games but not slots. any final bill would need statewide voter approval before becoming law. those sands gathered in vatican city for an easter vigil mass celebrated by pope benedict. the service took place at st. pete er's basilica. the service started in complete darkness. the pope sang a hymn announcing the meaning of easter. coming up tonight, a shooting spree in tulsa. five people shot and random. but one thing all the victims had in common. plus, the youtube video that has students from byu making national headlines. we'll tell you what sparked a massive pillow fight on the national mall today.

we are trayvon martin! >> protesters held a million hoodies march in d.c. today. it was one of several around the country calling for an arrest in the killing of unarmed florida teen trayvon martin. d.c. protesters began with a rally before marching from malcolm x to the plaza.

george zimmerman says he shot trayvon martin in self-defense. on tuesday a grand jury meets and could ultimately decide whether to file charges. a killer is on the loose in tulsa, oklahoma tonight. the gunman shot five peoples all within three miles of each other. three of the victims died. police believe the shootings were random. all the victims were black, right now, it's not clear whether this was a hate crime. at this time all police have is a big description from one of the victims saying, a white man driving a white pickup truck. students from one of the nation's districtest religious universities are taking bold moves to help prevent teen suicide. >> it gets better. even on this campus. >> this is a video posted to youtube by 22 gay students at bringing ham young university. their messages seek to inspire young mormons who feel depressed

moon just starting to wayne just a bit. it remains very mild outside here on a saturday night. 11:00 temperature at reagan national airport. still a relatively balmy 58 degrees. dewpoints are way, way down into the teens and 20s. so as a result, the clear skies in this fading breeze out here, temperatures will fall very quickly. i think we'll hold in the low 40s around washington. most of the western suburbs, where temperatures are still relatively mild now. i thinkp of the valley will be back down in the mid-30s by startoff time tomorrow morning. one our hometown forecast locations, front royal virginia, 48 degrees right now. by sunrise time tomorrow morning, flirting with with the upper 30s, and tomorrow afternoon, bright sunshine and temperatures hopping up into the mid and upper 60s. the freeze warning west of the blue ridge the panhandle of west

virginia, that freeze warning goes until 9:00 tomorrow morning. as soon as the sun comes up, things will start to improve nicely. nearest raindrops, just about 300 miles away. any of the showers that try to make it over the mountains will evaporate over the hill. stronger thunderstorms across parts central texas. for us, will be a dry and cold start tomorrow morning. courtesy of high pressure. high pressure heads for the eastern seaboard, our cold start will turn into a beautiful easter sunday around here. plenty of sunshine, maybe a spotty shower or two. cold front number one. cold front number two brings a little better chance for a spotty shower or two. not just to the mountains but even toward metro washington as we head toward monday afternoon. a nice big cooling trend coming our way. clearing and cold, freeze warnings, west of the blue ridge. startoff temperatures mostly in the 30s, 40s in town. a beautiful day after that cold start will warm up very nicely.

clearer tonight? >> a lot clearer. we didn't know what was going to happen. after tonight the capitals they jumped up, they jumped up one spot to the seventh seed in the east with tonight's 4-1 win over the rangers. washington will face the bruins now, in boston for the first round of the nhl playoffs, which will start next week. most likely going to be a thursday game. the caps string of four consecutive division titles, however, does end tonight as the panthers lock up the southeast with a 4-1 win over carolina. there he is, alex ovechkin looking for their fourth win in five games. he scores his 38th goal of the season. just 32 seconds into the game. caps already have a 1-0 lead. caps up 2-0 on the power play. john carlson fires and scores, caps 3 gomes on their first

seven shots. seventh period, three on two. niklas backstrom nets his first goal since returning from concussion. as for the man in the net. braden was on fire. filling in for the injured michael neuvirth. 35 saves, just one goal allowed, caps take a 4-1 win. so take a look at how the first round matchup will look. dale hunter and the crew headed to beantown to take on the number two seed bruins. that game as i said, most likely will be thursday, the caps are 3-1 against boston this season. that's good news, including that most recent meeting just over a week ago. the caps were a 3-2 winner in the shootout. to the masters after 54 holes in augusta. phil mickelson is one stroke off the lead heading into tomorrow's final round. lefty put on a short game.

unbelievable 30 on the back nine today. he trails peter happensen who is playing in his fourth major while mickelson is going for his fourth green jacket. mickelson all pars on the front nine, and after the turn, he surges. 13th hole, a 25 foot putt for eagle. gets the break. and drains it. moves phil to six under, he's pumped, in the zone. here's 18, a chance for birdie to move to 8 under par. and you bet, mickelson cards a 6 under 66. he's in second place, one shot behind this man. the 34-year-old swede playing in just his second masters. had a round to remember. 15th hole from the fringe. and this right here would put him in front. the solo leader, that birdie moves him to seven under. here's 17. a long birdie for hanson. breaking right and in the cup.

eight birdies on the day. he cards a 7 under 65. he is your leader at 9 under par going into sunday's final round. to baseball, geo gonzalez making his nationals debut against the cubs. adam laroche giving the new pitcher a little run support. deep to right off matt garza, off the foul pole, nats up 2-1. gonzalez could not hold on to the lead. bottom of the 4th. joe imaginer shoots one to left. that brings in reid johnson. gonzalez only went 3 2/3 innings. chad tracy up with the bases loaded. nats are down 1. but not any more. that one gets through to right. ryan zimmerman and adam laroche score. the nats scored five runs in that inning. they go on to win 7-4. they will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon.
