temperatures held 30s and 40s in the high spots, and culpepper, down to 34. frederick, maryland, down to 32. and in town, inside the beltway, temperatures mid to upper 40s. not much going on on doppler around here. the air mass around us is extremely dry so i don't think any of the drops will make it into our forecast. a pheubgts of clouds and sunshine. more clouds than sun by far. mild. yesterday we made 65, and today i think we will be closer to 70 degrees with the sunshine out there. and then by tomorrow clouds increase, and then my monday afternoon and evening, a couple quick showers are a possibility. but easter sunday, looks like a winner indeed.

mass on easter sunday and the pope said technological progress in the absence of god and moral values posed a threat to the world and he talked about the dangers of materialism. today he will hold another mass and deliver a speech from the balcony of the basilica. and the navy jet crashed into an apartment building shortly after takeoff on friday afternoon. the two pilots ejected before impact and they with five others went to the hospital with injuries but have since been released. the reports are coming out that civilians helped the pilots after they ejected. >> we believe a miracle has occurred here with us not having any victims. >> it was a display in virginia

raise taxes on those that make more thanked $100,000 per year. senate negotiators are considering lowering tax exemptions for those that make less than $100,000 a year. the general assembly must approve the budget plan before it adjourned on midnight on monday. and there's a measure to bring 1,000 slot machines to the harbor, and table games would also be there. maryland's gaming expansion bill would allow table games but not slots. any final bill needs state-wide voter approval before becoming law. and then in annapolis, sewer bills would go up from $30 to $60 a year. money would pay for upgrading

water plants and restore the plant in chesapeake bay. governor o'malley is expected to sign the legislation. he proposed the increase to help fight pollution. it will be determined if zimmerman should face any charges and meanwhile protesters are continuing the call for justice. yesterday, there was protests that began. the protesters say the trial needs to happen not only to bring justice for trayvon martin, but to help other young men that suffered the same fate. gay students from bringam

will, and apparently that worked. >> we talk about redistricting, and redistricting could hurt the republicans because there will be more democrats to vote for the new ticket. the game is not over yet. he won against seven other republicans on the other side. >> it will be a question of will the national party get behind bartlett on this one or will they see the handwriting on the wall and say it's not worth the fight because of the way it's redistricting. that's why it's not over yet. i think it's a question of seeing how the r and c decides if they want to protect bartlett or throw him under the bus. >> yeah, delaney already has

the senate felt that carton had not paid enough attention to african-american minority issues, and people think by raising the issue he did a good thing. and maybe he will have a chance in later elections. >> there's a battle that is too close to call, because there are a few thousand absentee ballots to be counted. closer than you guys thought it was going to be? >> yeah, i thought vincent would have a problem with this particular election because, number one, if you drive through ward three, you talk to people in ward three, and some of the community meetings, and ward three and four -- if you look at d.c. elections, those are the two wards you want to be on the

list of, because those are the heavy voting populations. so bittle is giving a run for the money. what we are going to decide in the final week or so it could be a big question mark for vincent orange. >> well, bittle had the backing of the powers that be, and was appointed to the post and then lost to orange, and a lot of people thought he had a good shot in retaining it and now it's close. while he did do better in the upper scale town districts, but seven and six, there's a lot of support for vincent orange down there, although there is a cloud over his campaign because of the links that contributed to the council. it's the big where did the money come from?

was bundling improperly done? there's concerns about all of the council members, and orange and bittle suffered -- >> orange did not suffer. it was mccartney that said throw the bums out, d.c. says no. >> but i will tell you what has really disappointed me more than anything as a d.c. voter, that there was only a 7% turnout. a 7% turnout! 93% of the voters did not vote. nobody could say they didn't know about the election. it was widely covered. folks got robocalls and peoples got flyers in the mail, and we were talking about this -- and we want to be a state?

an obligation to operate a safe place and make it clean. let's move on and stay in the district. we have alarming reports with respect to d.c. taxis and several assaults against women primarily. >> again, here we go with laxity, and not only the government but the taxi commission. you could write a book and fill the shelf in a new york library on stories about the d.c. taxi industry. but we find taxicabs now that are still number one not only assaulting women or people, but taxicabs that won't stop for african-americans in the district of columbia. i am not pointing fingers but telling the truth. a lot of people -- drivers don't have a understanding as to how you really respect and treat people.

not be racially motivated. one of the victims said the suspects asked for directions before opening fire. d.c. police are searching for the people that shot men playing a game of dice. it happened in northwest washington yesterday afternoon. one person shot was just 15 years old. each are expected to recover. neighbors say robbery was the likely motive. police identified the toddler hit and killed by a van in prince georges county. investigators say 2-year-old guzman ran out into the street and was hit by a van. witnesses to the accident say the driver stayed on the scene and likely did not see the toddler until it was too late. >> the guy in the van was coming

out of the parking lot and he turned in and the kids were playing on the sidewalk, and the ball kind of bounced off the sidewalk and went across the street and the little kid just darted after it in front of the van and didn't look or anything. >> prince georges' investigators are re-creating the zaccident. a unattended candle sparked the candle in lorton. take a look at the scene, a girl up the hill said she saw smoke, and her father banged on the door and then rushed inside and told everybody to get out. his quick-thinking saved three people and a dog. firefighters had to call in extra help to help put out the flames but fortunately nobody was hurt. metro riders can expect to pay more to ride but not as much as they thought.

the ceo said next year's operating budget will need $16 million less than they originally anticipated. that means the metro board will look at smaller fare increases. right now the operating budget is $35 billion. they will expect budget changes later this month. and now the state's general assemb assembly thought fantasy sports was gambling, and the measure will be in place by october. right now we are just three minutes away from 6:40.

back in the hospital and these are difficult moments over the course of the weekend. that is going to weigh on him. as he gets closer to the pennsylvania primary, he has to take a hard look at the prospects there. the poll something tightening up. in 2006 he lost in the state so badly for re-election, and there's a feeling in the campaign saying, look, do you want to jeopardize what you have done thus far, which is lose your own state and have the sting of that. >> and it looks like romney is already considering himself the nominee and taking shots at the general election and at president obama,and what is the difference here? >> anytime you get to the general election you start to reset and think about your message between now and november. he has been focusing on president obama for a long time and he wants to position himself

numbers through our seven-day forecast, and that brings us to april 14th, and that's next saturday. through the first 14 days of april, we will be 2 1/2 degrees colder than the month of march. i can't say we will be able to hold on to the differential through the month of april, but nonetheless it will be a rare treat. it will be only the second time. the only other time, 1907, and that was not only a blazing hot march but a chilly april as well. that's just climate kheuter chatter. and sun is just now coming up in the eastern sky. it's going to be a gorgeous day outside. and i can see the first rays of sunshine bouncing off the east side of the jefferson memorial. there is the national shrine in the northeast. and there is the old post office pavilion right there.

message. is a relevant message today and if so how relevant. our guest this morning is pastor of metropolitan church here in washington, and charles pope, and thank you all for joining us. on this easter sunday, does easter mean the same today as it used to mean? >> i think easter will mean the same today, and will always be the same. the way we carry the message may be different, but it never loses its meaning. >> how has the carrying of the message changed? >> i think that we really emphasize today new life, joy, and being alive in christ jesus. when i was a young child there was more of a regimented rules and we focused a lot on sin, and we still do, and that's what we are saved from, but we try to

emphasize more of just being alive and experiencing the new life and over all the negative forces in our life. >> reverend, the message and the method of carrying the message? >> i would concur the message remains the great gift god has given us through jesus christ that comes to us today and i think the sharing of the message, i think we have important opportunities to look at how do we connect with the world today that is different from what it was even decades ago. i think it's always trying to make it relevant to where we are. >> so the message has not changed. that's what i heard you say. but does easter mean the same thing to the christians who celebrate it? to the ones sitting in your pews, reverend braxton?

>> yeah, the message is about new life. the death on friday, and this resurrection today lends to us, gives to us a great gift of new life. and that's the whole easter, the whole spring piece. new -- new clothes the children wear, and there's blossoming of the tulips. everything is new. a budding up of the grass. it all surrounds new life. for those who come to our pews today, this is their hope, even in their communities that are depressed or owe pressed, the open is new life. whatever their conditions are, they come on this particular day, you know, craving this newness. >> is it just a hope even though

it may not be a reality for many? >> no, in fact, and this is always at the heart of the christian message. it's not just a hope or an idea. we proclaim and experience and as a preacher of the gospel, i am sure both of these pastors would agree with me, we have to breach from our own experience, i am seeing sin put to death and seeing new life and new confidence and new joy and new doors are opening. it's not just an idea but a proclaimed experience of the khur skpfp a shared experience, and i will tell you the parishioners work with us, and there's the call and responses going forth to celebrate the experience and not just the >> does it mean the same to the generation as it meant to our parents and grandparents for whom their faith was the foundation of the living? >> that's an important question

to ask for those grappoling with the experience today. people are not experiencing faith in the same way as their parents and grandparents. it's less of a, i would say, if you grew up in a neighborhood and been the to a community church, less so being connected to that way of experiencing faith. young people now, i think, feel and believe that they have lots of choices and lots of options. and i think that my parents' generation and grandparents would not have looked at it that way. they would not have looked at choosing jesus or not as a question in how they would proceed with life. so i think that the gift of the time is that there are a lot of things that are open for question, and the challenge of the time is for spiritual leaders. how do we convey the story of

jesus, the dying and the rising? and how relevant is that story to my life today? >> reverend, what would your response to that be? >> i think she is right. i want to go back to father's position, because for me, the easter message does provide the great hope for all of our lives. it is -- it contained in that message is the hope that our young people can rise out of their despair, rise out of their violence. how older people still carry the same -- our struggle in the church is how do we share the mess edge across generations so that we give to those who are our age, that keep reviving the same hope, and also how do we in

twitter or facebook, and are you sending out the mass direct e-mails? not just sending mail through the post office anymore to the congregation? >> no, facebook and twitter, and right now we are beginning to post our worship service, sending it out so that can you get it in your ipad or cell phone, so when you come to worship, you don't need paper, you just flip through. they even have me preaching from my ipad. it's -- this is a generation where communication is so fast, and how young people receive it so fast. if we are slow in giving out the message, then they leave us and goes somewhere where it is at a

race where they can receive it. >> you have to keep up with the short attention span, so to speak. >> yeah, we have a tkpwhraug that we do, and every day a word goes out. i will say this, though, i think as far as effectively reaching people, faith is powerfully handed out person to person. at some level, all the techniques in the world are necessary, but it all comes down to this is all very good news, and they say it's sounds like good news and how do i know it's true? i have to say, look at me, and my life is changing and to have that be a credible statement, and then if you are a mess, but to be able to preach kredbly, we have to be able to say not just

parents, look at me at how i receive from the lord and this church. >> how does that translate on facebook and tweets and blogs? >> i think what monsignor is talking about, he is talking about relationships and this is a movement in sharing the gospel. in some ways the young people around me would say i screamed a little bit as i have gone to believe that can you connect a little over social media, and i think we can, but what i am discovering myself, i played a lot of sports in school and at some point i knew i had to up my game, and i had to up my game on this because there are people making a judgment on whether the christ that i preach is relevant to them or not by how much i participate and how i engage. that's a whole thing that i have been working on, and in some ways this lent season on myself,

and also that i can trust that somehow god is in this, that god is in this time, and also offering us opportunity to share our experience of christ made real in our new lives and our own resurrection experiences in a new way. that way i find it very exciting. it's very daunting, because i feel very behind on some of it. that's why i rely differently on young people, young adults around me that teach me. >> i am reminded on a u.s. census report that says 2.7 million church members are falling into inactivity every year. are they staying home and just reading their computers or washing their cars or are they not interested in more in this faith that you are talking about? >> i think they are staying home, but i have a sense that they -- what they are doing with their computers, and their televisions, and what have you,

right now a large crowd is at the lincoln memorial for an early-morning easter celebration. this is the 34th year for the sunrise service at the national mall. capital church is hosting the event. organizers expect more than 6,000 people to show up. everybody missing in the virginia beach fighter jet crash is accounted for and safe. the two pilots and five others injured in the crash have left the hospital with minor injuries. it's believed a mechanical failure caused the crash. and a senate committee approved a bill to bring table games and slot machines to the national harbor. the house approved a similar version that did not include slots. now back to "viewpoint." we are talking about easter and the easter message and its relevance today. we were just talking a moment

ago about people staying home and having their services, worship services at home. how has it impacted our communities, monsignor? >> i think as we were talking about the internet approach, one of the dangers for faith and every dimension of life is we end up creating our own world, our world that affirms our own premise, but community, you are interacting with real people that sometimes throw up a penalty flag or teach you how to live. we have to live in a wider world where there are challenges. that's what i think showing up on that a sunday and knowing real people and being in real struggles with them is essential for us. >> is that a danger in general? it's not just that people are having church or worship services at home, but if they

are disconnected from the world? >> well i think when we look carefully at jesus' message, he was engaged in the world and for the world, and part of our faith is to trust that god is present in all people in some way. when we narrow down our worlds, we narrow down our view of god. i think that that that's part of the spiritual challenge that we live in in these times. finding a way to somehow make a new way between this that we have everything available on our little smart phone, and in some ways we don't have the flesh and blood of jesus that jesus kept putting us into over and over. what is the new way between those two in some ways desperate understandings of how we move together in the world.

>> let me ask you another question. we live in a very diverse country, and a time when there are so many issues that people are grabling with in their personal life styles. what do you say to those who believe the lifestyles conflict with the teaching of jesus, reverend? >> the message of jesus always found itself originally conflicting with society. and it is no way -- the message is the same today, and there is no way for the message of christ, even in this new life, not to be in conflict with society. and so if you embrace christ, you embrace conflict. if you embrace christ, you

embrace his suffering and his message of hope. but it does call for a discipline in living. so christ never -- the message of christ was never you are free to do everything or anything. it is a message of discipline, of control, and there's just no way to get around it. >> how do you pwhraf christians should approach the tough issues of birth control in the catholic church, abortion, which, of course, has always been a challenging issue, and same-sex marriage? many christians say christ is love and if christ is love then we should embrace love in its various forms. >> well, speaking from a very specific catholic point of view, we are not simply free in the catholic tradition to start tearing pages out of the bible or recasting what was handed on

to us in the biblical tradition. we have to keep, i think, calling people back to the fundamental message, and that's going to cause some people grief and anxiety and anger. as reverend braxton was saying, christ did not end up on the cross because everybody agreed. >> is that being exclusive, reverend? >> i think that the lutheran tradition that i come from has moved the evangelical church in america has moved to being an interpreter of scripture that

takes into account the changing soerb logical understandings of our day. so for issues around gay and lesbian, and gay marriage, and we are a place where we do hold gay weddings and i have done multiple weddings at church and in peoples' homes, and i think that where i have landed up as a pastor and being supported by my bishop is that it's standing on the side of love. that's where i ended up. we live in a time of long-term commitment of healthy relationships are often at a premium. i want to be part of how those are supported in the world today. i have found that many of my members, who are gay and lesbian are very strong examples of that. i have had a change myself in that over time, but also because i had the opportunity to be part

welcome back to "viewpoint." reverend you wanted to address the issue, and here's another question, can the church speak with one voice on all of these issues? >> i don't think the church can speak with one voice on all of the issues. i think there are many issues where the churches speak with a common voice and one voice, and that is the suffering of humanity. and that's the love of christ for all people. now, how we are processing that, there's another voice. but i think there's no division on christ and the suffering of humanity. we all speak on the same voice.

the love of god in christ jesus, we all speak from the same voice. and so on these principled issues, if we go back to the resurrection story, go tell my disciples, and it is -- he is alive, he's alive. and he was not alive just for his disciples, but for all of creation. that's the same message that we all carry. wouldn't you agree? >> oh, yeah. i think what reverend braxton has done so well is the link of good friday and easter, that they go together. when we slide one way or the other way, we are missing some things about what god is doing in the world and to have them both together i think are the message that we do have in common and we may sit at

different places in the table, so how that message is lived at or enacted publicly, and perhaps it takes a variety of ways for that to happen in our country and world. >> according to the recent article in "the new york times," more americans are undecided about god and many are turning to nonchristian faiths and i believe they are known as the nuns. what do you believe is behind this transition, monsignor? >> well, again, this is a time that we live in of questioning. there are so many -- even here in traditional news formats -- >> i should say nons meaning n-o-n-s, and not nuns. >> we have to be more clear in distinguishing what is the christian community, and we have

to understand why christ is superior to any other message. i am a christian because of all the things i explored, it makes the most sense and has the most to offer me. >> i think the pendulum keeps moving both ways. and even in my own ministry, 45 years i have seen it go one way to the god is dead theology, and then move back to, you know, he has risen theologies. it has its movements. final word, quickly. >> i think we have a great opportunity today. things changed. outside world has changed and what does that mean for church in the easter mess sing where -- message is where we are at. >> thank you all. >> thank you. >> happy easter.

while easter has many up early on this sunday morning, one of the larger celebrations is going on now at the national mall. derrick ward joins us live from the service. >> reporter: indeed the sun has risen, and the service that is going on, they are in the sermon phase of the annual event here at the lincoln memorial. it's being resi being resided o. it gone under way back in 1979. it was march of that year when a pastor was taking a walk down by the reflecting pool around sunrise, and he was inspired and wanted others to share with that experience and wanted them to bring in easter that way. there are about 300 people the first year. this year, every bit of 6,000 folks here. we did speak to one of those who

the navy jet crashed into an apartment building friday afternoon. the two pilots ejected before impact. they and five others went to the hospital with injuries. they have all since been released. reports are coming out civilians helped the pilots after they ejected and made sure neighbors were okay. >> we truly believe a miracle has occurred here with us not having any victims. >> it was an amazing display in virginia beach of what citizenship means. >> the navy is investigating the crash. they believe a mechanical failure caused the accident. virginia governor, bob mcdonnell, says a special victim's fund will help those impacted in the crash. and then a crew in arizona was practicing near yuma when the problem occurred. everybody is expected to be okay. a navy spokesperson did not reveal more details only saying something went wrong with the

training exercise. she said the navy will investigate the accident. a budget battle is one of several issues maryland lawmakers are trying to settle in the next few days. lawmakers are trying to reduce the deficit of more than $1 billion for the necessary fiscal years. senate negotiators raises taxes on those that make more than $100,000 a year. senate negotiators are also considering lowering tax exemptions for those that make less than $100,000 a year. the general assembly must approve the budget plan before it a it adjourns on monday. table games and the gaming expansion bill would allow the

sixth casino in the state. friday a bill was approved but will need voter approval before becoming law. sewer bills could go from 30s to $60 a year. money would pay for upgrading waste water plants and restore the chesapeake bay. the senate gave preliminary approval yesterday and the house passed the bill. governor o'malley is expected to sign the legislation. around the country, protesters hit the streets calling for justice for the murdered teen.

everybody has the full sunshine. quantico, virginia, you are in the 30s right now. you will be up near 72 degrees by 4:30 this afternoon, and by the time your sunday evening is coming to an end, the temperature back down to 64. and the startoff temperatures are in the low 50s. meanwhile for your easter sunday, everybody, a good-looking day ppl temperatures in the 50s in the next couple hours. plenty of sunshine, but again, that west and northwest wind will blow between 15 and 20 miles per hour. the air mass over head is really dry, so the rain drops are evaporating on their way down. we will have a beautiful easter sunday today with a little breeze. the cold front will slide through late today and another one on its heels come sliding through tomorrow. maybe a few sprinkles in the mountains tomorrow. better chances for a few scattered showers tomorrow
