quickly spreading fires. and it made for a busy day for local firefighters. good evening, everyone. i'm chris gordon. dry brush and high winds create dangerous conditions tonight for quickly spreading wildfires. jane watrel is live in prince george's county where fire crews stayed busy running on dozens of calls. >> we're at the college park fire station which is just one of many places where firefighters were out running on calls from brushfires in brand wine to downed power lines. two days of powerful winds and low humidity have created critical fire weather conditions. a red flag warning that has not gone unnoticed by prince george's county firefighters. >> we've been busier than normal. nothing outrageous but we've responded to numerous calls that probably involve some type of red flag incident, whether it be a brush fire or wire being knocked down by the high winds and igniting brush on fire.

things of that nature. >> reporter: the dry, windy swl to blame for an 18-acre fire. up to 100 firefighters battled the five-alarm blaze that tloed the evacuation of 60 nearby homes in the joppa town area. residents were allowed to return after the all-clear was given three hours later. in bowie, a family's easter cookout turned into a nightmare when the grill ignited a tree near the family's home. >> they were grilling out in the driveway. with these dry conditions, the heat transferred over to that cypress tree, went up very quickly. extended into the roof of the garage to the house and eventually into the house causing anywhere between 50,0$50 and $100,000 in damage and displacing the family. >> reporter: those windy, dry conditions are being felt in virginia as well. in warren county, a controlled burn went out of control burning three acres before firefighters brought it under control.

reporting live in college park, i'm jane watrel, news 4. >> well, storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us with an update on that red flag warning that most of our area is under. >> no doubt about it, chris. you can see on our map all the highlighted counties here are the red flag warning counties. that's pretty much all of the metropolitan washington area out to the shenandoah valley into pennsylvania and out into the eastern shore as well. high fire danger. no rain anywhere on storm 4 radar right now. it's a very mild sunday night in progress. so more breezy weather ahead for at least tomorrow and tuesday. some needed showers coming our way, at least for most of us. and it may actually feel more like march than april this week. i'll talk about that and show you the seven-day forecast coming up in a few more minutes. >> okay, chuck. see you then. a family in prince william county says their neighbor is a hero. he got them out of their burning house yesterday. this fire broke out down the

street from bill kim yesterday and as soon as he saw it he rushed into the home and he yelled for the people inside to get out. turns out they had no idea their house was on fire. kim says he was happy to help his neighbors. >> i don't really feel that i'm a hero. it's just, you know, something that you do like if you see an elderly person trip and fall. you kind of help them. it's just, you don't think about it. i'd want the same thing from somebody if that was happening to me. >> the roof of the home caved in just minutes after everyone got out safely. fire investigators say the cause of the blaze was an unattended candle left just outside the home. a call for a domestic dispute turned into the arrest of an international fugitive today. police in spotsylvania county responded to the call this morning. when they arrived, the discovered the man involved in the dispute was wanted in

georgia on weapons charges. and by federal officials for charges in mexico. he ran away from police, but a police canine eventually found him hiding under the deck of a nearby home. local authorities are work with immigration officers to sort out the charges me may face. he made newsmakers break out in cold sweats. and tonight, the grand inquisiter, "60 minutes" legend mike wallace is dead. he died last night in connecticut surrounded by friends and family. his television career spanned more than six decades. he interviewed countless presidents, world leaders and celebrities alike. wallace is widely known as the man who made barbra streisand cry. his last interview was with baseball star roger clemens in 2008. clemens was trying to fight off accusations of steroid use. wallace's go for the throat interview style led him to attempt suicide after a $120 million libel suit. in 2005 he told the late tim

russert he wanted his epithet to read tough but fair. mike wallace was 93 years old. crews in virginia beach spent this easter sunday digging through the wreckage of that fighter jet crash searching for the jet's flight recorder. now the navy is hoping it will help them get some answers as to what caused the f-18 to crash. the jet slammed into an apartment complex on friday just minutes after takeoff. the pilot safely ejected from the plane and miraculouslyio ngo one on the ground was badly hurt. dozens of apartments were destroyed. one man who was forced to move into a hotel said today he doesn't blame the navy. he says they've always been a good neighbor to him. well, revenge may have been one of the motives behind a shooting spree that left three dead and two injured in oklahoma last week. police believe one of the men arrested for the crime was trying to avenge the killing of his father at the hands of a black man. all five of the victims in friday's shootings were black.

charles hadlock has the latest. ♪ ♪ he's been good so good to me ♪ >> reporter: a somber easter sunday service in tulsa. >> some folks don't have their family members with them right now. some folks are not enjoying this easter as we are. because their relatives have gone on. >> reporter: for nearly 48 hours, neighborhoods in north tulsa were gripd with fear, until today when police say they captured two men allegedly involved in a shooting spree that left three people dead and two wounded. >> it sickens me it angers me. this is not what tulsa, oklahoma, is about. >> reporter: the suspects were roommates, alvin watts and jake england. both charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. >> our investigation always includes social networking sites. >> reporter: on a facebook page appearing to belong to england taken down this afternoon there was a status update posted hours

before the first shooting. referring to the two-year anniversary of his father's murder in tulsa. though it's unclear what it means, another entry posted friday says, in part, if something does happen tonight, be ready for another funeral later. police say the victims of the shooting spree did not know each other and while all were african-american, it's unclear what, if any, motivation there may have been. >> i've heard questions about hate crime. folks, this is where the really tough work starts in an investigation. it is very premature to talk about hate crimes. we have yet to analyze all the information. >> reporter: keshia harris rushed to the aid of one of the wounded. >> it was really calm in disbelief. they couldn't believe they got shot. just happened out of nowhere. >> that was charles hadlock reporting. court records show that alvin watts was charged for assault and battery in 2009, but that those charges were dropped.

he also paid a fine for a domestic violence offense in 2006. well, on tuesday, a florida grand jury will be tasked with deciding whether to charge the man who killed trayvon martin. george zimmerman maintains he shot martin in self-defense this past february in sanford, florida. martin was unarmed and many believe zimmerman's decision to shoot martin was racially motivated. dc delegate eleanor holmes norton will host a forum tuesday night that folk uss on the perceptions of black men in society. it runs from 6:30 to 8:30 at the d.c. armory. north korea is set to launch what they are calling a communications satellite into orbit. the government says the launch is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of north korea's founder kim il-sung. the u.s. and other nations believe it is a cover-up for a ballistic missile test. they have urged north korea to cancel the launch. north korea has tested two

. a massive gasoline fire on a california highway gave the appearance that the road stefl was on fire. it happened overnight when a car slammed into the back of a gas tanker truck. the truck hit a guardrail and overturned. was carrying 9,000 gallons of gas. it took two water-dropping helicopters and some 150 firefighters over an hour to put out the blaze. officials shut down two freeways but both have since reopened. there were no major injuries. the driver of the car that hit the truck was charged with driving while intoxicated. gas prices are rapidly rising across the country. the average for a gallon of regular is up to $3.93, and it's even higher locally. and you pay even more if you have a car that takes premium gas.

that has lots of drivers considering switching to regular to save money. but experts say there are a few things you should know before making the switch. first thing is to check your owner's manual. if your car says it requires high test gas, then you have to put it in. if it recommends it, then they say you can try regular. >> as long as your car does not ping, it doesn't start knocking under acceleration. that's the biggest difference between the different grades. >> experts say you may get poor gas mileage with a lower grade of gas so any savings at the pump could be lot of on the road. metro fares are still going up, but not as much as lots of riders thought. metro's ceo richard sarl says next year's operating budget will need about $16 million less than they originally anticipated, thanks in part to reductions in spending. and improved ridership outlook. that means the metro board will

look at smaller fare increases. right now the 2013 operating budget is around $1.5 billion. the board will meet later this month to discuss the fare changes. the trial of the man charged with murdering jennifer hudson's mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew starts tomorrow. the presiding judge plans to start questioning would-be jurors one by one. the judge wants to weed out jurors who could be swayed by hudson's star power. prosecutors say william balfour shot the family in a jealous rage after learning his estranged wife was seeing another man. court officials say jennifer hudson is expected to attend the trial every day once testimony begins. she is also on a list of witnesses who might testify. well, easter sunday brought out thousands of people for two yearly traditions here in washington. a chilly morning did not discourage the 6,000 people who came to sunrise service at the lincoln memorial. that tradition started in 1979,

and those who got up early were not disappointed. they witnessed a spectacular sunrise. across town, thousands filled the washington national cathedral to capacity for easter services. and the first family walked from the white house through lafayette park to easter services at st. john's episcopal church. and the obamas are gearing up for a yearly tradition. strm the annual white house easter egg roll. this year's special guests will include julianne moore and forrest whitaker along with olympians dominique dawes and michelle kwan. d.c.'s blue high school band will perform. more than 35,000 people are expected to attend. this is the 134th white house easter egg roll. it started back when rutherford b. hayes was president. it's a great time. kids love it. what kind of day are they going to get? >> good day tomorrow. will not be raining. any rain chances tomorrow look like they'll be holding off until much later in the day.

25-mile-per-hour range. it will be a fairly stiff breeze tomorrow. temperatures right now mid to upper 50s north and west. upper 50s to near 60 around town still. and still low 60s across parts of central virginia. it's going to be a mild night. off to a mild start tomorrow morning. upper 40s and low 50s first thing in the morning. just a couple of clouds around. plenty of sunshine nearly the day. clouds come in later on in the afternoon. breezy for sure. i think any rain chances hold off until late in the afternoon and into the evening time frame. here it is on storm 4 radar. nothing to worry about tonight. dry tonight and dry for your work and school commute in the morning. this area of low pressure over the canadian maritimes, that's going to move southwestbound and that's going to keep a pockest cold air aloft. that's an important part of our forecast because the cold pocket of air put a little sunshine into the mix. we'll bubble up some clouds tomorrow and a chance for showers as well. so not too chilly to get your day started. breezy for sure.

monday morning sunshine. but monday afternoon clouds, maybe a few passing showers through here late tomorrow afternoon. here we are at midnight tomorrow night. then dry tomorrow night into early tuesday. but then another little trough of low pressure with that cold pocket coming back in. could bring a few showers just to our north on tuesday. and another better chance for some showers right here where we need them. get some of the pollen out of the air coming up on wednesday. most of the upcoming week looks cooler than average. overnight, partly cloudy. not as chilly in town or bayside. overnight temperatures mostly in the 40s. one or two spots might reach down below 40. then for tomorrow, highs in the mid to upper 60s with morning sunshine and afternoon clouds. and a chance for some showers in here late in the day tomorrow. plenty of clouds tuesday with maybe a spritz or two of rain. better chances of rain on wednesday and then dry it out, staying cool through at least thursday. highs in the 50s, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. back into the 60s friday and early next week, sunny, warm and dry. >> that is good news.

this week taking a trip back in time. experiencing what it was like to be on board the "titanic" 100 years ago. the passengers will spend 12 nights traveling from the uk to new york. the ship will follow the same path as the titanic. to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the disaster. among those on board, relatives of some of the victims and survivors of the "titanic" along with a bunch of history buffs. the ship has been decorated toy is zresemble early 20th century life. and despite "titanic's" huge success at the box office the first time around, the re-release came up shord. titanic 3d brought in $17 million. but the top spot for the third straight week went to "the hunger games." the film raked in another $33.5 million and in second place, "american reunion." coming up after the break, a
