clinton. detectives tell us it was an accident. there were several adults inside the home here on oarbutus lane. the child is in extremely critical condition. we'll have an update as soon as we get there. very windy weather caused trouble out on the tidal basin today. the wind blew some people in paddle boats up against a bridge. a rescue boat helped them get back to shore. three employees who work at the paddle boat rental station also ended up in the water while trying to bring the boats back in. one is taken to the hospital but no one was seriously injured. another developing story of this hour, reagan national airport where a united airlines flight blew two tires while landing about 11:15 today. it was flight 1075 from houston, texas. the plane was towed to the terminal. united says no one was injured. we'll have a live report from jane watrel tonight on news 4 at 5:00. good afternoon on this very busy monday in the news.

i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the special prosecutor investigating the death of florida teen trayvon martin will not send the case to a grand jury. >> as jay gray reports now prosecutor angela cory says she will be the one to decide if george zimmerman faces charges for shooting and killing the unarmed teenager. >> reporter: a handful of protesters, most of them students, marched to the sanford police department today, blocking the front doors and for a short time actually closing the office down. as the protest over the trayvon martin shooting continues, special prosecutor angela cory announced she, alone, would determine if charges would be filed in the controversial case. she spoke briefly today by phone with the protesters. >> whether a grand jury or special prosecutor we just want justice for trayvon martin and his family. >> reporter: in a brief, written statement cory said she would not present evidence to a grand jury set to convene tomorrow and that, quote, at this time, the

investigation continues and there will be no further comment from this office. >> anything that gets this case to the courtroom the right way i think is what we all want. >> reporter: martin family attorney benjamin crump released this statement after cory's decision. we are not surprised by this announcement and, in fact, are hopeful that a decision will be reached very soon to arrest george zimmerman and give trayvon martin's family the simple justice they have been seeking all along. it's been 45 days now since martin was shot and killed by community watch volunteer george zimmerman. his legal team continues to insist he fired in self-defense. >> when you're getting your head slammed in the ground after your nose has been broken it's a pretty good reason to have fear of imminent injury that you're entitled to use force including deadly force to protect yourself. >> reporter: now with so many people watching and weighing in on the case -- >> we need to go ahead and move forward. the wheels of justice have moved far too slowly in this case. >> reporter: after today's decision, the only one who can make them spin any faster is the

special prosecutor in the case. now, many legal observers say they expected this, that cory has rarely used the grand jury as a prosecutor. they are also quick to point out as she was that this does not have any bearing on what her ultimate decision may be. in sanford, florida, jay gray, news 4. bond is set at about $10 million for two white men accused of shooting five black men in tulsa, oklahoma. three of the men died. two are injured. the suspects are 19-year-old jake england and 32-year-old alvin watts, who police say chose their victims randomly. meanwhile, investigators are trying to determine whether the shooting is a hate crime. >> it's preliminary to determine what the motivation was behind this. if the evidence supports that, and we believe that we can prove those elements of the hate crime, that will certainly be considered at the appropriate time. >> on england's facebook page, there were postings about the two-year anniversary of his father's murder.

england believes a black man was responsible. >> people who lost their homes and belongings when a navy jet crashed on friday in virginia beach are getting compensation now from the navy. a legal office was opened today at the virginia beach law enforcement training academy. payments for individual residents start at $2300. more money is being given to people with families. dozens of apartments were destroyed when the navy jet crashed friday. people aren't allowed back into the crash site until cleanup is complete. >> jury selection is under way in the trial of the man accused of killing jennifer hudson's family members. the star's estranged brother-in-law william belfour allegedly murdered her mother, brother, and 7-year-old nephew in chicago in 2008. today a judge is trying to see if potential jury members can set aside their sympathy for hudson. it's expected to last at least two to three days. the oscar winning actress and singer is expected to be there for every day of the trial once testimony begins april 23rd.

belfour faces a maximum life sentence if convicted. a bill to help police and community groups work together when a child disappears is on its way now to governor martin hoechlt maly's desk. both the maryland house of delegates and senate passed the measure known as phylicia's law named in memory of phylicia barnes who disappeared while visiting family in maryland in 2010. she was later found dead. it will require officials to publish a list of missing children and a list of groups and volunteers who could help with the search. there were big losses on wall street today following a slump in hiring last month. some in the political world are blaming those economic numbers on president obama. as steve handelsman reports, it could shape what happens next on the presidential campaign trail. >> reporter: stock prices fell at the opening bell, a reaction to the bad news on good friday. hiring down in march after three

until may 29th but while romney and santorum battle on, the president is about to get hammered by a feared republican operative, karl rove and his american crossroads super pac. they have a war chest of $200 million. they're sure to hit hard on the economy and on gas prices, in tv and web ads, blaming barack obama. the president tomorrow kicks off another push to change the subject to hiking taxes on the rich. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. a brush fire spread and caught a commercial building in northeast d.c. on fire this morning. crews quickly put out the blaze in the 600 block of rhode island avenue. this happened right next to greater mount calvary holy church. everyone inside of the building got out safely. at least 25 homes are threatened by this large forest fire in burlington county, new jersey. the blaze began early this morning and has now spread to

more than a thousand acres. dry and windy conditions are fueling the fire. because of that, a red flag warning is now in effect for much of the mid-atlantic region which includes the washington, d.c. region as well. the warning is issued when dry and windy conditions increase the risk for potential fires. the public should be extra careful when doing things like camping and grilling outdoors. well the wind is also kicking up a lot of pollen out there today. it is still whipping. >> yes, it is. storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson tells us when the winds will die down. nice day today. >> yeah, nice day. we've had a fair amount of sunshine around the area but boy oh, boy that wind as you said really blowing around the pollen. blowing around a lot of trash. and the trees have been swaying back and forth. easy to see why. take a look at some of the current wind gusts. those winds gusting currently between 25 and 30 miles per hour. as high as 39-mile-per-hour gusts in baltimore and 36-mile-per-hour winds right now in annapolis, maryland in anne

arundel county. we expect to see breezy conditions so the winds are going to start to diminish a little bit but still breezy for the evening. that's all because of a big area of low pressure up toward the north and high pressure off to the east. we've got some clouds, more cloud cover off to the west around west virginia, and you can see those clouds actually producing a few rain showers right now. very, very light showers and/or sprinkles around portions of our area. right now we've got 67 degrees. the temperature at reagan national airport. northwest wind at 17 but gusting up to 26 miles per hour. so overnight, the wind will diminish somewhat but then we'll pick up right again tomorrow those winds. and our temperatures right now running in the 60s from 67 degrees in d.c. in spots around morgan and anacostia to 70 in fredericksburg. today the warmest day out of the week. we have a cool week to talk about coming up and of course our lack of rainfall and when we could get maybe the next significant rain around here. i'll have all the details in a

we're live over rivera beach, maryland. this is in anne arundel county where they're still dousing a brushfire that was there a couple minutes ago. again, we mentioned that at the beginning of the broadcast. under a red flag warning until 8:00 p.m. and that of course means fire danger is elevated because of the real dry conditions that we have around here as well as the gusty winds. we've got 67 degrees for a temperature. no problems with temperatures. as a matter of fact, today probable it warmest day out of the work week. so we are going to be cooling down. our winds out of the northwest at 17 miles per hour. gusting up to 26 miles per hour. we're going to see that wind of course diminish as we go through the afternoon and evening hours. the other thing that's blowing around of course the pollen. it is high today. over 1200. some of the main contributors? mulberry, oak, sycamore pollen has been blowing around. hopefully you haven't suffered too much. we've got two more windy to breezy days to deal with this week. coming up tomorrow and the day

after. 64 degrees the current temperature in mount airy, maryland. 67 degrees in anacostia. 67 down in la plata and waldorf and 70 in fredericksburg. then 50s off to the west. off to the west in some of the high spots there could be light snow coming up over the next two days. this is storm 4 doppler as we push it forward here. over the last two hours you can see the blobs where there are light rain showers around waldorf, leonardtown and south of fredericksburg. these are moving off to the east. we do have a chance to see some of that spotty, light showers and sprinkles for the next couple of hours. a lot of it because the air is so dry, is dry up on its journey down. but don't be surprised over the next few hours if you've got a sprinkle or two happening in your neighborhood. 59 by 9:00. 55 degrees by 11:00 p.m. on your good night wakeup forecast. then we keep some of the cloud cover around right through the overnight and to start tomorrow. your sun will come up at 6:38

now. >> reporter: with a handful of ticks a veterinary entomologist at the university of georgia is caught off guard by so many so early. >> back in february people started sending me ticks and i was a little surprised. quite surprised. >> reporter: she isn't the only one. vets nationwide are worried the early arrival of ticks and mosquitos will cause outbreaks of pet diseases like heart worms. >> we are talking about cats and dogs because both are susceptible to heart worm. >> reporter: chris carpenter and byron blackburn are both with the companion animal parasite council and both say the exceptionally warm winter is to blame. >> we anticipate we'll have more mosquitos and of course since heart worm has moved from an infected dog to a noninfected dog by the mosquito, the mosquito plays a pivotal role. >> reporter: so the council set up a free website. pets and parasites.org where you can look at a county by county, monthly update on frequency of pet diseases.

smokey didn't have a microchip but somehow mrs. richardson tracked him down and picked him up this past weekend. queen elizabeth bestowed a new honor on the duchess of c n cornwall today. she has been appointed to the highest female rank of the royal victorian order. she is now a dame grand cross of the royal victorian order. that title is given to people who have served the queen in a personal way. the announcement coincides with the couple's seventh wedding anniversary. facebook is expanding its online social media empire. the company is spending a billion dollars to buy the photo sharing software company instagram. the deal comes just days after instagram started offering a version for android phones. facebook founder mark zuckerberg issued a statement saying the deal will help them offer users the best possible experience for sharing pictures. more las vegas tourists are spending more money on shopping than gambling. according to the 2011 las vegas

visitor profile study spending was up on shopping by $129 and drinking by $275. the survey shows that 77% of visitors said they gambled while in sin city. that's down from 84% in 2007 and 80% in 2010. as far as the profile of the typical vegas tourist goes, 77% said they were married and the average age of responders was 49. >> it's branded as the company for women and now a new woman is taking over at avon. today's sheryl lynn mccoy was announced as the next ceo of the struggling cosmetics company. she is leaving her long-time job as an executive with johnson & johnson. avon sales had been slipping in north america over recent years. last week the company rejected a $10 billion takeover bid from beauty product maker coty. more to come.

we are parched and the wind isn't helping. >> we're looking at dry conditions or deficits since we started this year. how much rain have we gotten? take a look at the graphic here. 9.79 inches for the year now looking at a four-inch slightly over four-inch deficit. that is for folks in northern virginia, for most of maryland, and for eastern maryland, too. we're abnormally dry. getting over into delaware and eastern maryland and we're even worse there. we're moderately dry there. same thing all the way for southeastern virginia. abnormally dry conditions and,

yeah, the last time we really had any substantial rainfall around here over a half inch in a single day was february 29th. it's been a long, long time. and as far as this week goes it doesn't look as though we'll get anything substantial. we've got a few light showers out there right now coming through areas of southern maryland, leonardtown, calvert beach pushing toward cambridge. we've got a little bit more in the way of some light moisture, probably not reaching the ground here around beaver dam and ashland right down 1 and off to the west, too. leesburg might get a sprinkle or two. on the future weather some of those sprinkles come through during the evening hours. we're breezy to start the day tomorrow with some sunshine and clouds mixed and then we're windy again for the afternoon so that fire danger is going to stay high. only a few light showers coming through. i think we've got a better chance for actually getting some rain in here wednesday and that i think will be mainly during the afternoon. starting out tomorrow morning a bit of a chill in the air again. 47 d.c. 39 in frederick,leesburg.

manassas and warrantton a high tomorrow just shy of 60 degrees. boy, that is chilly. certainly today the warmest day out of the work week and we've got this cool spell that will continue through the week the next four days. in the 50s to, well, mid 60s rising on friday as we get in more sunshine but our best chance of rain is wednesday and then we have another chance with this abnormally dry condition so across the area another chance on monday after the weekend. and look at that. we even see the temperatures fight maybe to 74, 80 saturday and sunday. >> wow. all right. really hot. >> break out the shorts again. >> why not? >> all right. well, team adam and team cee lo take the stage tonight for live performances of "the voice." >> nbc's stephanie stanton joins us live from los angeles. stephanie, it's going to be a big night. >> reporter: it certainly is. the excitement definitely in the air here. rehearsals are going on right now in the sound stage behind me. now, last week we saw team blake

flights. pilots plan to walk off the job fridays and mondays from now until july 30th to protest the creation of a low cost airline called iberia express. pilots fear the new airline could lead to lower wages and threaten their jobs. more than 150 flights have been canceled so far. negotiations on an agreement to include the new airline have so far failed. agent 007 james bond is known for his women, sense of adventure, and his drink of choice. the vodka martini. but now james bond is a beer man. in the next bond movie sky fall starring daniel craig 007 will be seen taking a swig of heineken. it's part of a bigger advertising campaign featuring craig, heineken is reportedly paying, get this, $45 million, pat, to be in this movie. that's an expensive beer. i hope they make it up at the box office. >> he'll take a swig of anything for that kind of money.

with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour. right now at reagan national our winds are gusting to 26 miles per hour. the temperature is 65 degrees. on the chilly side with the clouds that have moved in in some neighborhoods and with that wind as far as what we're seeing through other neighborhoods, to the north gaithersburg around olney, maryland your temperature just 61 degrees. we have 68. annapolis, maryland. 66 hunting town. 70 down to the south in warranton. today the warmest day out of the work week. look at your morning start with temperatures in the upper 30s to 40s throughout the area so a bit of a chill with partly cloudy skies around the area. those warnings that you see are freeze warnings. along and just west of i-81 from cumberland to petersburg down to west of charlottesville in rockingham county. so more of a chill, even in fact cold out there. we'll hit a high tomorrow of 59 degrees right in d.c. a tad warmer down to the south. manassas and culpepper and you folks around fredericksburg and

even pax river seeing highs in the low 60s tomorrow. that of course a bit of a chill for us running a couple degrees below our average high. here is a look at the rest of the work week. we'll get better but friday the high is 65 with some sunshine. until then a bit unsettled with clouds coming through the area. some sprinkles. maybe even a better chance of a shower on wednesday and definitely breezy to windy the next two days. back to you guys. the city of philadelphia is mourning the loss of two firefighters killed while battling an early morning blaze at a warehouse today. this was the scene around 4:00 this morning as flames tore through the four story structure. two firefighters were killed while inspecting a furniture store next to the warehouse. the roof collapsed on top of them. strong winds also blew embers on to the surrounding neighborhood forcing evacuation of at least 300 homes while firefighters doused them with water. now breaking news. a 6-year-old shot in clinton.

>> we have breaking news off the top tonight. investigators in prince george's county say a 6-year-old child is dead from an accidental shooting. let's gethe latest from jackie benson live at the scene >> reporter: wendy assistant police chief kevin davis called this a parent's worst nightmare and that is certainly what it is. we are told the little 6-year-old boy did not survive what was apparently an accidently self-inflicted gun shot wound. you can see the scene down here on arbutus lane in clinton. investigators, homicide investigators, prince george's county police detectives here on the scene. a short time ago we heard from assistant police chief kevin davis. here is what he had to say. >> this is a tragic, tragic incident. >> can you tell us what, is there a penalty in maryland for having -- it sounds like this was an unsecured firearm. >> there are several. and that's what we're sorting out right now with ourom
