thanks. ♪ okay. what's your secret? [ male announcer ] the united mileageplus explorer card. get it and you're in. there's breaking news tonight. five police officers have been shot. at least one of them is dead.

there is a standoff still under way between police and a gunman in the small new hampshire town of greenland. it's about five miles from portsmouth. sources tell our nbc affiliate in boston that the chief of greenland's police department was killed. he was ten days from retirement. two of the other officers that were shot are said to be in critical condition. sources say a drug task force may have been trying to serve a warrant when all that shooting began. and we're covering breaking news closer to home in green belt. that's where a huge search of a national park took place tonight after somebody spotted a gunman. jackie bensen is live on the ground there. jackie? >> reporter: dorene, the 911 call came from a motorist who spotted a man in camouflage right here where the park borders good luck road. now, at that point it caused a fast response by u.s. park police. they were assisted by maryland state police officers armed with semi-automatic rifles. they set up a perimeter around

the park, and they also brought in helicopters with nightvision capabilities. we can tell you it caused quite a stir at the church just across the street here. >> somebody say they have a rifle, they've got a rifle. when the police come they run out. we didn't see nothing now. but we're okay here. we just tried to get safe, and that's what we're about. reporter: we're told a tracking dog did track a path into the woods but at about that same time police received a call from a motorist on the other side of the park who said they saw a man come out of the woods and get into a car and drive away. we do not know at this point for what reason the man was in the woods and if he had a gun. back to you. >> thanks, jackie. a big two-alarm fire at a recycling ware nohouse in gaithersburg has been put out. large bundles of paper provided plenty of fuel for that fire. nobody was injured. take a look at these flames shooting out of a metro bus in

the westbound lanes of i-66. somebody driving by caught the fire with his cell phone camera near nutley street in vienna. metro says no passengers were on board when it happened, but this did cause big back-ups for drivers. the white house tonight is condemning north korea's failed attempt to launch a rocket with a communications satellite. north korea insists it was a peaceful mission. but the u.s. and other countries believe that mission was a veiled attempt to test a long-range missile. u.s. officials say that rocket fell into the yellow sea before it fully launched and it never posed any threat. the role of stay-at-home moms is now center stage in the race for the white house. a democratic strategist who made comments about mitt romney's wife did apologize this evening. but the fiery debate she sparked is far from over. even the president and vice president have chimed in. hilary rosen said ann romney "never worked a day in her life." mrs. romney is a stay-at-home mom who raised five sons. rosen's words were meant to be

an attack on the romneys' wealth and his lower approval among women voters. she wanted to imply that romney was detached from working-class americans. but instead stirred up emotions about motherhood. >> my career choice was to be a mother. and i think all of us need to know that we need to respect choices that women make. >> this is not about stay-at-home moms versus working moms. i think your husband needs to stand up for women's economic struggles. >> i think this was an ill-advised statement by somebody on television. it's not something that i subscribe to. and moreover, my general rule is you don't talk about the spouses of elected officials. >> the first lady, who's been both a career mom and a stay-at-home mom, tweeted "every mother works hard and every woman deserves to be respected." tonight for the first time the lone survivor of a fiery crash in chevy chase is speaking out. it was a teenager.

he was one of four in a car that crashed during a police chase last month. he told our shomari stone that the shock of that day changed his life. >> reporter: this crash was an inferno. the teens were coming around the circ circumfrns of the chevy chase circle right here and slammed right into this tree. you can see the charred bark right here, shattered glass from the car. tonight the only survivor told us he blacked out at the point of impact. >> i don't remember the night that clearly. >> reporter: in an exclusive phone interview 18-year-old rico richardson says it's a miracle he survived the fiery crash that killed three of his friends. take a look. a police pursuit ended with the car bursting into flames three weeks ago. >> thank god every day wake up and i'm still alive. >> reporter: rico richardson's grandmother told me he's currently in a group home for allegedly violating probation on the night of the fire. montgomery county police say he was sitting in the passenger seat in the stolen toyota echo. >> that's all i was thinking

about, is coming home, where i should have been at. >> reporter: 16-year-old emmanu emmanuel, 14-year-old kyrie nelson will never go home again. the two cousins burned to death in the back seat. the fire quickly overpowered the police officers, forcing them to back off and wait for firefighters to put out the blaze. police were able to rescue richardson and the driver, 16-year-old reynard osmond. osmond eventually died on march 28th. >> i wish the other kids, you know, was alive. >> reporter: richardson's grandmother wipes away tears, hoping he makes better choices. and she holds on to faith. >> and i still pray for him and everything. >> reporter: back out here at the chevy chase circle you can see a ribbon now pays trinibuteo those teens. richardson's expected to come home from the group home this weekend, and his grandmother plans to have a long talk with him. in chevy chase i'm shomari stone, news 4. d.c. police confirmed today the discovery of a meth lab in

an apartment building in adams morgan. office y officers went to a building to serve a warrant. when they found the lab, one man was arrested on cocaine charges. it's not clear if he'll be charged in connection with the meth lab. a woman and a 6-month-old baby were also in the apartment where the lab was found. it's the second meth lab found in northwest in recent months. george zimmerman will remain in jail for the foreseeable future. after facing a judge for the first time today, zimmerman entered a not guilty plea on a charge of second-degree murder in the killing of trayvon martin. a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors claimed zimmerman profiled martin because he was black, chased him, and then shot him in the chest after a struggle. zimmerman will be held in his own jail cell for now. but the defense will push for him to be released once they feel he's safe. >> i hope to have him released on bond, and by that time i hope to have a place for him to be safe. >> i feel as though he needs to be locked up and just prepare himself to be held accountable for what he did.

>> zimmerman's formal arraignment happens may 29th. a big step forward tonight in the effort in fairfax county to start the school day later in the day. the school board approved a resolution tonight in an effort to push high school start times back to 8:00 in the morning. right now school starts so early that some kids get on the bus before 6:00 in the morning. it is not a done deal yet. the superintendent must now study other school divisions with the latest start times and then report back to the board in june. at high schools in montgomery county the debate over sexual orientation is back. the group parents and friends of lesbians and gays handed out 50,000 flyers across high schools this week. the flyers tell students that being gay isn't a choice. they are in response to flyers sent out in february saying homosexuality can be treated with therapy. >> if p. fox goes around telling people, well, you really don't have to be gay, you can be straight like everybody else, if

you just took therapy and try hard enough and they try these therapies, which lead to depression, even suicide. >> a montgomery county board of education committee is thinking of banning flyer distribution beginning with the next school year. up in boston tonight overtime for the caps and the bruins in game 1 of their playoff series. and a heartbreaker for washington. what happened up there? >> this is a tough one. some great hockey for 60 minutes, scoreless hockey, but this one was an absolute goalie battle. the young goalie played very well for the capitals. it all came down to who scored first in overtime. unfortunately for the caps, it was the bruins. and it happened just 1:18 into overtime. right now dan hellie is talking to the players in boston. he'll join us live later in sports with reaction. but no question, a tough loss to swallow. goalie making his stanley cup playoff debut matching up against the veteran tim thomas.

and hopy did not disappoint. 29 saves over three periods including 17 in the second period when the caps were outshot 17-2. as for thomas, the vet also doing his part. 16 saves over three periods. and we go to overtime and a scoreless tie. just over a minute o.t. marcus johansson's shot saved. and boston would go the other way. counterattack. chris kelly beats holpe. 29 saves but he could not get to 30. bruins win 1-0 in overtime. afterwards head coach dale hunter was asked about his young goalie. >> he'll be fine. he has lots of confidence. you know, it's one of those shots that right inside the post. not too many goalies would have had it. we're fine. it was a chess game out there and we battled hard and unfortunately it was a perfect shot that won the game. >> he should not hang his head. he had a great game. next up game 2 saturday night in boston. coming up in sports we're going to hear from dan hellie, who will be live in boston. he's talking to caps players.

you can't think they're going to be too down, though, because of the way that they played. game 2 could go well. coming up tonight, a couple of robberies at a drugstore. police say not only were they inside jobs but a family affair. it's one of the coolest exhibits in the city, and it's on the outside of a downtown museum. wendy rieger gives us a look. and celebrating the reopening of the 102-year-old howard theater. doug? >> a cold night tonight.

temperature swing? my forecast coming up. surveillance video led to the arrest of a cvs store supervisor. he's accused of helping a robber steal cash from the store twice. police say fenton graham was on duty both tames that the cvs on tuckerman lane in potomac was robbed. surveillance cameras show graham throwing a bag of money out the door when the robber apparently forgot it. tonight both men have been arrested along with fenton's girlfriend who happens to be another suspect's daughter. more than $100 million. that's the value of a stolen painting recovered overnight. police in serbia found "the boy in the red vest" hidden in the inside panel of a car. the painting is one by french impressionist paul cezanne. it was stolen from a swiss museum four years ago. the robbers that day also got away with a degas, a van gogh, and a monet.

the degas, still missing. when night falls, something really remarkable comes to life at the hirschhorn museum here in d.c. it's a cinematic experience that is stopping people in their tracks. wendy rieger reports. ♪ i only have eyes >> reporter: at first you're not sure what you're seeing. flashing lights, patterns, silhouettes looming large. and you can't take your eyes off it. and that's the point. artist doug aiken is using the museum's round facade as a screen, creating the first 360 degree convex cinema experience, a new version of theater in the round. and it's wild. the images are accompanied by various haunting renditions of the 1934 pop classic "i only have eyes for you." this installation is called simply "song one." and it's something the artist is known for. having done similar cinema

outside new york's museum of modern art. he likes transforming these buildings into what he calls liquid architecture. people gather at the hirschhorn at sundown. some lying on the grass. others just simply stopped in their tracks. this woman was driving by when it seized her. >> and i asked them, i said what is this? what's going on? so they told me it was art, isn't it beautiful? i said yes, it is. because i heard music. >> the images move around the hirschhorn's round structure, motivating you to walk around it as well, to see what's on the other side. and the side just beyond that. anywhere you can see the hirschhorn you can see this visual happening. that's why it's so cool. it's like something is alive in the midst of the washington night. it's here every night. every night from sunset till midnight. but only till may 13th. and after that it will all disappear from view. wendy rieger, news 4 washington. a plump pooch in burtonsville's getting a lot of attention as he tries to shed

some pounds. or at least his owners try to get him to. fluffy pork chop is a shelter dog. the corgi cocker spaniel mix was rescued by a group in delaware, then taken in by foster mom marilyn kesinger. when she took fluffy in, he was 42 pounds. that's twice his ideal weight. but fluffy has started to shed those extra pounds with some exercise and diet change and the help of a vet. >> i told her the food i went and found the amount of calories or the vet found them, and we compared and she said yes, that's a good food. feeding him twice a day is better than feeding him once a day. >> fluffy's progress is being tracked online. once he loses more weight, he'll have to undergo some surgery for eye, teeth, and joint problems. kesinger will then put him up for adoption. glad he's making progress. a lot of us are trying to lose a few pounds as the weather gets warmer. >> fluffy pork chop? >> yeah. go figure. >> okay. just wondering who.

okay. yeah, you know what? and that's the way it's going to be, doreen. if you've been one of those people that's been trying to wake up early in the morning to get up for that early jog, you know it's been a little bit on the cold side. but that's not the way things are going to be later on this week. out there right now, a pretty nice night. but yes, it is on the cool side. temperatures around where they should be this time of year, though. at least for now. we will be right around average for the low temperature overnight tonight. the high temperature today got up to 63 degrees. that was three degrees below average. and so far for rainfall we're 4 1/2 inches below average for the year. that's about an inch a month, more than an inch a month. we really need to see some rain. i don't see any out there anytime soon, though. 54 degrees the current temperature right now with winds out of the northwest at about eight miles an hour. current temperatures 43 in winchester. already 49 in culpepper. stanton at 47 degrees but still 50 in baltimore and 45 in frederick. the wind's still trying to calm down. you still have a few clouds out there left too.

but you aren't you are going to see those temperatures cool. as we look at the clouds you can see the clouds trying to reform across our region. that will be here early and then they'll get out of here by early tomorrow morning. that will allow the temperatures to fall fairly quickly and that's why the national weather service has issued a frost advisory from montgomery county, howard county to the north and west and then through parts of virginia. west of i-95 for the most part does not include fairfax or prince william county but just about everybody else along i-59 you're under some kind of frost advisory or freeze warning back to the west. you want to make sure you cover up those plants overnight tonight. cool weather in here for tonight. high pressure dominating, though. and anytime the high is to our west, that's normally the cooler side. so we're going to be nice tomorrow but we're still on the cool side of the high. as the high shifts off toward the east now we're starting to get on the reverse flow, that southwesterly flow. and on saturday the warm air is going to be right upon us. i think we get into the 70s on saturday, and on sunday the high moves farther down to the south and east. we are on that southwesterly

flow, and we see our numbers skyrocket into the 80s. some areas tonight could be around 34, 35. and on sunday they could be around 84 or 85. that's that 50 degree temperature swing in just a couple of days. take a look at the numbers here. 60 degrees today. a little bit earlier by saturday. look at washington by 75. the 80s down to the south around jackson, mississippi at 86. but then here comes sunday. 84 in raleigh and 85 in the washington, d.c. area. and hey, look at monday now. monday the latest computer model. i didn't go this high, but it went all the way up to 89 degrees. could we get there? it's a possibility. we'll have to wait and see. as far as our forecast goes tomorrow morning, tempetures on the cool side as you step out tomorrow, you'll need the jacket. but by late in the afternoon you'll be able to put it away. temperatures 34 to 43 degrees. 64 to 70 tomorrow. and really a fantastic friday under mostly sunny skies. here's the next couple of days, showing 85 on sunday. right now i'm going 83 for monday. we could always warm that up. and we stay in the 80s on tuesday. before we start to see a chance

it was tough. there were penalties. there were great penalty kills. both goalies were unbelievable in this game. braden holtby had 29 saves. he shut out the bruins through regulation. and then he let in the heartbreaker in overtime. just a couple of minutes in. let's take a look at the highlights in this one. braden holtby making his first playoff start on the nhl level. first the hitting we were talking about. in the second period alex ovechkin and dennis seidenberg. hard to tell who got the best or worst of this one. ovie all smiles, though, afterwards. as for holtby, he was all smiles, too. the caps were outshot 26-7 through two periods. holtby stopped all 26 of those bruins shots. tim thomas also on his game. third period the b's turn it over, but thomas stopped nicklas backstrom. scoreless after regulation. we're going to overtime. and this was the heartbreaker for the caps. they're on the attack.

and here's chris kelly, beating holtby after 29 saves. he lets that one in. the capitals fall 1-0. yes, holtby was fantastic. the second star of the game. but that goal was costly. >> we hay chance at one end and then they came down the other way. and i guess he just made a good shot. but you know, our goaltender played great. i thought holts was awesome. his first, you know, nhl postseason game. and i thought he was -- i thought he was tremendous for us.úcz) >> all right. but when -- you know, when the game is on the line like that, i want to be better. but there's parts of my game tonight that needed to be better. but there was also some positives. >> it's a tough time of the year to lose. but you don't win the series in game 1. there'sbo lot of hockey resu we play. we like -- i g =ñ#< % the penalty box.
