and now from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 midday." breakings news to begin "news4 midday," a teenager is at the hospital, after getting hit by a train in gaithersburg. it happened around 8:30 a.m. near the washington grove station. that's where news4's megan mcgrath joins us live. good morning, megan. >> reporter: well, good morning barbara. investigators say a 17-year-old boy was walking in this gravel alongside the eastbound tracks here. just prior to the washington grove train station. at about 8:30 this morning. that's when a csx train carrying a load of gravel began to approach him from behind. the train saw the teenager

beside the tracks, according to witnesses, the engineer sounded the horn. trying to get the young person to move out of the way to give a little bit more of a berth. unfortunately, though, according to investigators, the teenager was listening to music. he had ear buds in at the time. the music was too loud, he didn't hear the horn, did not realize that there was a train coming up from behind him. and his right arm was clipped by the passing train. >> the train was approaching the station as per standard policy. he aired the air horn to let people know they were approaching. they did that, the juvenile was wearing ear phones and was unable to hear the train at the time. therefore he got hit. >> reporter: the teenager was conscious when transported to the hospital. his injuries primarily to the right arm that was clipped by the passing train. now service was shut down for about two hours this morning. the train did leave the area right around 10:20. now we have normal service in the area. the boy is being treated for his

injuries. reporting live in gaithersburg, megan mcgrath, news4. thank you, megan. let's find out if this is affecting the rail service out there, danella sealock joins with us the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning, barb raxt earlier we did see a delay on the m.a.r.c. train. but right now things are running back to normal. now let's get over to the roads. i-95, if you're making your way southbound at 216, connecting to the beltway, you're at 64 miles per hour. only a nine-minute trip at this time. over to i-66, in delays here, a live look at cedar travel east and westbound on i-66, you're clear. travel speed, 58 miles per hour, 11-minute drive to get from fairfax county parkway to the capital beltway. barbara, back to you. thanks, danella. right now the united nations security council is discussing north korea's failed rocket launch. the rocket disintegrated over the yellow sea yesterday. the u.s., britain, japan and others are calling the launch a

violation of u.n. resolutions. the white house calls the launch a quote provocative act. north korea says the rocket was on a mission to send a satellite into orbit. but that mission did fail. and now to a developing story in new hampshire. a small community is mourning the loss of its police chief shot and killed during a drug raid in the town of greenland. four other officers were injured in the shoot-out last night. police say the suspect and a woman also died. they're still trying to determine if it was a murder-suicide or a double suicide. a police robot found the bodies inside the home around 2:00 a.m. police chief michael maloney had 26 years of experience in law enforceme enforcement. >> our thoughts and prayers go out to police chief maloney and all the friends and loved ones of the officers that have been injured. and all of the friends and family of the greenland new hampshire police department. and the new hampshire law

enforcement community. >> the 48-year-old police chief was set to retire in less than two weeks. prince george's county police want people to use a popular, who use a popular trail in maryland to be on alert after three women are attacked there. police say the women were abducted then sexually assaulted along the northwest branch hiker trail, that's near the west hyattsville metro station. news4's tracee wilkins has more on these attacks. >> reporter: police say that since january, they have had reports for at least three incidents of rape, sexual assault or attempted assault happening on this trail here near the west hyattsville metro station. now they're asking the public to help them catch the man they believe to be responsible. police say a woman was taken by knife-point and raped here on the northwest branch hiker/biker trail behind the west hyattsville metro. they say it happened on tuesday march 27th, just before 10:00 p.m. police say it's the third sexual

assault case reported in this area. and on this trail since january. two composite sketches drawn by two different artists were released by the maryland national capital park police this week. both sketches show strong similarities, although police don't know for sure if they're only looking for one attacker. in the most detailed description, police say their suspect is a hispanic male in his late 20s, early 30s, between 5'5", and 5'7", weighing about 160 pounds. the witness told police her attacker spoke spanish, with an accent she believed to be a salvadorian. his weapon of choice? a seven-inch kitchen knife with a brown handle. the women we talk to who use the trail say they were not aware of the attacks, but will be more cautious now that they do. >> i walk here every day to go home. and now i'm very afraid that something could happen to me or to another woman. >> it's disheartening because

this is an area where there are a lot of children and as a woman it's frightening because you shouldn't have to fear for your safety in your own neighborhood. it's unfortunate. >> reporter: until this rapist is caught, police are urging women who use this trail or go to this metro station, to walk in groups. and if they see anything suspicious, to call 911 immediately. in hyattsville, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. this morning, george zimmerman is behind bars, a place his attorneys say is safer right now than if he were free on the streets. zimmerman had his first court appearance yesterday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of trayvon martin. his attorney won't ask the judge for a bond hearing until he can find someplace safe for zimmerman to stay. a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors claims that zimmerman profiled martin because he was black, chased him and then shot him in the chest after a struggle. zimmerman maintains he shot martin in self-defense. he'll be back in court at the

end of may. meanwhile, trayvon martin's mother is clarifying some comments she made during yesterday's interview with the "today show." when asked what she would say if she could talk to zimmerman, she said that she seemed to suggest that she thought the shooting was an accident. listen. >> i believe it was an accident. i believe that -- it just got out of control. and he couldn't turn the clock back. >> fulton is now clarifying comments, saying she was referring to the chance nature of the confrontation between zimmerman and her son. she told the "associated press" quote, their meeting was an accident. that was the accident, not the actual act of him shooting him. that was murder. they were never supposed to meet. kids in fairfax county may soon have a little more time to get ready for school. the school board approved a resolution to push back the start of high school classes until 8:00 in the morning, right

now classes start at 7:20. meaning some students have to get up as early as 6:00 a.m. or be on the bus that early. the county will look at how the changes would impact other school divisions before a final vote is taken in june. taking a look outside right now, it looks petty nice out there. still on the chilly side, though, let's find out from storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein what we can expect for the rest of the day and into the weekend. >> a beautiful among, it's fresh and cool, bright sun and a blue sky. and we've cleared out as high pressure has been pushing in over the last 12 hours. we had a little cloudiness this morning, it's long gone, all around the region, plenty of sunshine pouring down. temperatures now just past 11:00, all of those areas in green, they're in the 50s. a few spots there in the blue, in the highlands of west virginia, western maryland, still in the mid to upper 40s there. closer to washington, it's into the 50s now. at 58 at reagan national. richmond now up to 60 degrees. and it's beginning to warm up just a little bit with the strong april sun. in the suburbs, and rural areas,

west and north of washington, we're in the mid 50s now. soust and east in southern maryland around the bay, northern neck, eastern shore, it's climbing to the mid to upper 50s. fredericksburg is 59, culpepper, manassas, 57. charlottesville as well. it's cooler right near the pennsylvania border. the low 50s now. and later this afternoon, we should be warming up nicely. i'll have the latest on that and a look at the forecast in detail for the weekend and into next week. and i've got good news for allergy sufferer, a look at the latest pollen count coming up. new today, newark, new jersey's mayor, cory booker, is talking about his heroic efforts to save his neighbors from a fire. booker came home last night and noticed his next-door neighbor's home was on fire. the mayor and two of his security guards ran in to help, even going inside the burning home to get them out. rescuers later took booker to the hospital along with a woman that he rescued. and the news conference just minutes ago, booker said he did

reflecting that royal blue sky. we have greened up beautifully. that is a live picture from our city camera. can you see there's not much wind. not much of a chop on the potomac, just a perfect spring day, if you like crisp, cool, invigorating weather weather. right now, reagan national is at 58. bright sunshine, but it's very dry. dew points only at 30. and because things are so dry, we've had a few small fires popping up. because of people flicking cigarettes out of their cars. driving along. we've had some small fires popping up because the ground is so dry. we still even though things are greening up, we still have much of the vegetation is, is very dry. so it can easily get a fire going. so watch out for that. and we've asked you to send in your photos of your spring scenes, right? well look at this, isn't that a beautiful dog? and the tree is pretty nice, too.

58. suburbs and rural areas in the mid 50s. just to our west and north, upper 50s southern maryland, northern neck and through central virginia, near 60 degrees there. shenandoah valley, mountains of west virginia, into western maryland. there it's in the low 50s. so a little bit of a chill still in the air there. now for the afternoon, lots of sunshine throughout the entire region. we'll be warming up to around 70 degrees just to our south from fredericksburg over to culpepper, warrenton, manassas, leesburg. closer to washington, mid 60s. a little cooler along the pennsylvania border. southern maryland, northern neck looking beautiful. for the metro area for the afternoon, 63-67. lots of sunshine and a lighter wind. and then overnight tonight, we'll have a clear sky, we'll have our temperatures dropping from near 60 around sunset, to around 50 by midnight. with a light southwesterly breeze. and if you're heading out for some friday night baseball, to nationals park, it's going to be a cool evening, so dress accordingly. there at nationals park, we'll

have our game time temperature, first pitch, 7:05, right around 60 degrees, it will be cool, under a clear sky. we'll be dropping back through the 50s through the game and by dawn tomorrow, down to the upper 30s, near 40, a beautiful day on saturday. we'll have afternoon highs into the mid 70s, the big cherry blossom festival parade is tomorrow. perfect weather for that. feeling like summertime, almost beach weather, sunday, monday, into the 80s. morning lows, 50s to near 60. then a front comes in tuesday, might trigger some scattered storms. after that, wednesday and thursday, it should cool down. now the big story on tuesday, is the space shuttle discovery flying in piggyback on a big 747. they may have to adjust the arrival time because this could be some storms around as we get closer to the day, they may have 0 to postpone that. >> too bad it's not coming on sunday. that would be the best day. >> why don't you tell them. >> it would be a weekend. thanks a lot, tom. let's check on the midday

a heart-breaker for the caps in their first playoff game last night. the bruins scored the only goal of the night, a little over a minute in overtime to take the first game of the series, 1-0, it was a stellar game for braden holtzby in his first-ever nhl playoff game. he stopped all 29 shots he faced. the caps will try to even up the series tomorrow in boston. you can catch that game here on news4 starting at 3:00 in the afternoon. an online video documentary is putting pressure on mexican officials to make some changes and it's also creating controversy for showing kids in adult situations. in northern virginia on monday to headline a women's only event at the home of a prominent republican fundraiser in mclean. montgomery county's controversial ambulance fee, which was shot down by voters seems to be showing signs of life. congressman liggett wants reinstate the fee. he said patients with health insurance would be covered. those without insurance would have to pay unless they fall below a certain income level. liggett estimates the fee could bring in as much as $17 million a year. maryland governor martin o'malley says he's planning to sit down with lawmakers to discuss a special session. the governor told wbal radio that he'll meet with house speaker michael bush and senate president thomas mike miller within the next several days. however, he says an agreement as well as trust and understanding are needed first. the general assembly failed to reach a budget deal, triggering a so-called doomsday budget that cuts spending by half a billion dollars if no deal is in place

by the 1st of july. a cbs manager in montgomery county is accused of helping a robber steal from the store. police say he was part of an inside job and they say they have proof of that. take look at this video. police say man robbed the cvs on tuckerman lane on potomac twice in several days, the same manager was on duty both times. police say they got suspicious when the surveillance video shows the robber forgot the bag of money. the video shows the manager walking out with the bag of money and leaving it outside the door for the robber to get it. police arrested the manager, 35-year-old fenton graham in silver spring. his girlfriend, michelle allison, who is the daughter of the robbery suspect, 53-year-old michael cook, was also arrested. and we're going to check again on our forecast now. let's talk to tom kierein about just how soon we're going to see the warmup begin, tom? >> it's going to begin here in the next couple of hours. right now it is still quite cool. beautiful blue sky over washington, live view from our sky watcher camera.

300 feet above northwest washington, looking into downtown washington. all splashed with sunshine now. and all around the region, we're in the 50s. upper 50s now in washington, and areas just to our south. to the north and west, temperatures mostly in the low to mid 50s now. but by later this afternoon, we should be hitting the mid and upper 60s throughout much of the afternoon. sunset today is at 7:44 and by then we'll be back down to near 60 degrees. and then a clear night tonight. we'll be down to near 50 by midnight. near 40 by dawn on saturday. another gorgeous sunny day tomorrow, it should be warmer with a southwest breeze, we should make it into the mid 70s tomorrow afternoon. on sunday, mid 50s in the morning, and feeling like summertime, sunday afternoon, a lot of high clouds coming in, but it's going to feel like a summer day, into the mid 80s it looks like. and that's going to repeat on monday. though more clouds around monday. near 60 in morning. afternoon highs mid 80s. then on tuesday, we could have some afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

passengers. the transportation security administration is showing off some new machines at dulles international airport. that can electrically verify passenger boarding passes. right now, tsa agents check each ticket to make sure it's valid. a process that's open to human error of course. the tsa says the new boarding pass and identification system should make it easier for them to spot fake documents. metro fares are a step closer to going up by as early as this july. the transit system's finance committee approved a thik that will raise fares on the rails by about 5%. that means you could pay as much as $5.75 during peak hours. bus riders will see a ten-cent increase and you'll pay 25 cents more to park. the biggest change is for riders who use paper fare cards. they will now pay $1 surcharge for every trip that they take. there will be two new passes, a $14 all-day pass, that won't have any time restrictions. and for the first time, a 28-day pass that will run you about

we've been looking at the top five cosmetic surgeries over the last year. today we focus on a technique designed to rejuf night the eyes and make them look less tired. we're going to let dr. steven hopping tell us what it is. the scientific name you call is blepharoplasty. from the greek. but eye lift is much simpler. >> so if somebody is interested in this, that's what they call and ask for. tell us exactly how the surgery is performed? a lot of people don't know exactly what they do to lift the eyes. >> well 13 million cosmetic procedures, about 200,000 were eyelifts in 2011. basically, eye lift surgery is do make our eyes look less tired. people who show up at work every day had a full night's sleep and

everyone says, you look so tired, didn't you sleep? i hear that story all the time. so people want to look natural, they just don't want to look tired add. >> does it aim from taking the puffiness under the eyes. >> the lower eyes, it's the bags and loose skin. upper eyes, it's hooded skin. >> let's take a look at some results. here's -- >> this is showing diagrams where the incisions are in the crease of the upper eye. just below the lashes of the lower eye. and. >> you take skin out there and lift it up so that -- >> and the interesting thing, there's very little discomfort with eyelid surgery but there's certainly bruising with the eyes for ten days to two weeks. >> this is a good example how again, tired on the left, refreshed on the right. we don't want to look operated. we want to look refreshed. >> so do you actually -- >> again -- >> take skin or fat? >> skin and fat. it's mostly skin and fat. but again, on eyes, less is best. so you want to be very

conservative. >> there's a real big difference. >> what are some complications from this surgery? >> eyelid surgery. there are a lot of problems with eyelid surgery. that's why you really need to be conservative. we don't take fat out any more. we move it around. we limit how much skin we take off the upper eyelids, because we want to make sure the eyes can close after the procedure. we want to avoid roundness, we want to make sure no one has eye problems beforehand, like glaucoma, dry eyes. because sometimes the surgery can aggravate these situations. so you need to find these things out in advance. >> does it often happen that people can't close their eyes after you take out the skin? >> its been described. and again that's a complication that we work hard to avoid. that's why you need to put yourself in the hands of someone who does a lot of eyelid surgery. >> what age person i guess, it doesn't really matter? >> this is the kind of thing people do in their middle age to beyond. 40s, 50s, 60s. men and women.

a lot of men do this. they're between jobs, they want to look sharp and look young. they don't want to look tired. the eyes, they know all the eyes tell all. so eyes are really important. >> so are there any tips that you would give people who are interested in this, what they should look for when they're looking for a surgeon to do it? >> i think eyelid surgery is technically one of the more challenging things we as cosmetic surgeons have to do. so find someone who does a lot of eyelid surgery number one. make sure they're board-certified number two. ask to see before and after pictures. if they don't have before and after pictures, they're probably not doing the surgery very often. ask it see patients who have done it and get an eye exam beforehand. if you have glaucoma or dry eyes, think twice about doing surgery. >> has it ever happened that somebody would come out with eyes looking different? one looking different from the other? with a droopy lid or anything like that. >> it's been described and that's a potential complication. fortunately it happens in less than 1% of cases and can be
