6:03 are gone. >> pierre: guys are digging deep now, doc. this was a robust game to start. obviously very even. you look at the shot clock, 32 shots for the bruins, 29 for the washington capitals. 1-1, both goalies have been stellar and face-off play, pretty equal. it's just within been one of those hard games to play. >> mike: a couple of guys sprawl. puck out of play. neutral ice face-off to come from this. >> pierre: usually, doc, when you have so many fatigued players, it's a mental mistake, not a physical mistake, that gets you in trouble. still early enough in the first overtime that you can see it and even sense it now. guys are starting to drag. everything's going just a little bit slower. >> mike: forced on back off of rolston. thought that was offside. but anyway, jammed around now. rolston is able to one-hand it to center. so it's academic.

bergeron wedged there by backstrom's reach. taken to the outside. drive by seguin is blocked off. carlson able to step to that one. and he shoves it on out to semin at center. knocked away by chara. handed right back up the wing again. they hold. seguin, a shot. swatted away by holtby. cranked right back in again by chara. handed right out in front it came, to be handed by backstrom on. and just away from semin near the end of his shift. set up now for kelly. kelly able to take it right back ahead. kelly rips one into the catching glove of holtby and he hangs on with 11:01 to go in the first sudden death period. >> pierre: patrice bergeron, brad marchand, tyler seguin making some things happen. quick shot on goal. marchand just can't get to it. the bounce is out of the catching glove. watch bergeron. taps it out of the air. makes a quick toe drag on holtby. alzner's down.

four weeks ago, holtby was in chocolate town playing for the hershey bears. is he under the brightest of lights right now. krejci chased out of the face-off. beagle will be in. peverley directing the linesman on how he wants it. won't make a difference. and beagle pushes it to the corner. and this one bounces toward thomas who's able to shovel it away. work in traffic. chimera gave it on to beagle. oh, and a save by thomas on jay beagle! >> pierre: thomas had to be so careful when he went to play the puck because the puck's rolling. you see him laughing with greg zanon. he doesn't want to put that puck up and out of play or it's a penalty. and good pressure by the capitals.

and beagle with a quality opportunity and thomas says no again. chimera with the quick feet and the quick stick. laid out to beagle. what a play by tim thomas. >> mike: you figure alexander semin in the shooting hole here? backstrom will try to win it directly back? >> pierre: exactly. >> mike: see if he can do it from kelly. he does. semin, a shot. skittered in on thomas who turns it aside to ference. ference banks it safely out to center. dragged back in. now by peverley. krejci has it. centered one again. carlson cut that one off. it's finessed back on by backstrom and geared out to center. 9:20 to go, first overtime period. they gain the zboen zone and play it back. ference able to bank one on to lucic. canceled out and a good, effective move by carlson. semin gave it across.

johansson brought it in. shot, turned aside by thomas. lucic can't get by. dropped on back deep. the defense can play and rattle it on around where safely it is played by johnny boychuk. circle to circle on over to ference. more changes in lines for the capitals this time. knifed one away for a quick tip back in by lucic. swatted around by mike green. second effort, hopped one along that is off the shelf and handballed away to troy brouwer at center. >> pierre: seidenberg, chara, ovechkin on the ice. >> mike: this is zdeno chara marching ahead. troublesome pass for bergeron. handled by green. laid on for ovechkin. it kicked to seidenberg. jammed it on the backhand there. and it is tipped on out for marchand. and a diving play made by mike green. marchand again centered one just off the stick of seguin who had to knife it out of air. back comes ovechkin. defended away. swung away to the corner by seidenberg. rattled back up the boards and

it's marchand again. devils back and is able to play it on. bergeron gains the zone. four caps in on him. caps are able to march out of their own zone. aucoin shut down there. wideman punched it ahead. chara has it there. gives it back on for the stash back in by rolston. holtby sets it up for schultz. nearing 7:30 left in the first sudden death overtime period. rifled ahead and ward has it. ward shoveled one that is jabbed away by tim thomas to the corner. skidded around behind where it can be played on by zanon. hunted down by ward. kept alive by alzner. off the back of the cage and again with it is corvo. in front. a save by thomas and a big scramble there. along it comes and alzner trying to brush it along. thomas back to his feet in the cage. floated to the shelf in the corner. squibs on for zanon. back up the boards. read by mathieu perreault.

dealt it back to ward. slammed one on thomas and the outside of the cage. to the back again, carlson, good keep for washington. thomas scurries out to play that one. back to carlson. shoulder there had by rolston. played in traffic off rolston. jammed on now and can be held and then lifted on back. alzner's shot grabbed and held by thomas. and play has stopped. 6:42 to go. >> pierre: ward and perreault couldn't get to the front of the net. great aggressive fore-check. aucoin getting a quality chance against thomas, a loose puck and they just couldn't corral it. karl alzner puts it on goal. you see his head up. they couldn't get bodies in front. you see the job done by zanon and also corvo to deny the washington capitals a slot area presence. >> mike: the best draw man in the series, bergeron, and in the league during part of the year. on the tie-up, came up high

there on perreault. all a part of competing for the stanley cup. and they are having words. but it is thrown back out again. skipped across bergeron. run into by perreault. bergeron and perreault go back at one another a little bit. can't do too much. tossed to the front of the net and holtby decides, thnt this isn't working well. so he stops play. >> pierre: perreault thought he was caught on the play. but he's not. doesn't look like it. he's going up to his mouth. doc, you have that saying, they let the players decide things, i think we're at that moment right now. and we have been for a while, actually. >> mike: everyone stays place here in their seats screaming.

here it is, peverley and beagle. beagle wins it again. reverses back to carlson and on ahead. ference goes back to retrieve. 6:15 left in the first o.t. weavings his way on is ference. escaping up the wing was krejci. that went off of him and can be played out to center by boychuk. slugged back in deep. will it be icing? no. they are motioning it's a delayed offside. the arm comes down as the caps go on the attack. thrown back in by johansson. ference rammed by johansson. bounced off that. it is krejci finessing it back now for the play to be made by lucic across. johnny boychuk storms ahead. seguin with him. plops it back in. decides not to go after that.

seguin will take care of that. the puck came toward the front. holtby decided enough. 37 shots by the bruins. 36 by the capitals. it's 1-1. >> pierre: composure with the puck also matters. look at the poise right there by milan lucic on his backhand to johnny boychuk, utilizing the defenseman to break down the fore-check of the capitals. excellent composure. you learn a lot when you get to the stanley cup final as a player. i think lucic learned a lot in terms of refining his overall game. >> mike: that's a lot of work there on that face-off for no puck drop. the lecture is given. they'll try again. this time, dug out by marchand. handed to the back and over to chara. his shot is held by holtby. moving screen in front of him, hamrlik and seguin.

>> pierre: face-off win, he just missed that puck. >> mike: these are the team's two best going at each other, beagle and bergeron. they're pretty anxious. and bergeron is waved out. marchand come in? no. it's going to be seguin. beagle prevails on the seguin. scaled out to center where it's lobbed again by chara. that one squibbed through holtby. 5:10 to go. seidenberg with that. jammed it back up. on back again to seidenberg. through the legs of chara. over by ovechkin and carried on

for the drop over to brouwer. brouwer with a backhander that went wide. came back over to green. tried to hurry one in front that was blocked off by kelly. green's stick is broken. hamrlik able to hoist it on his backhand and chara steered it across. seidenberg there away from ovechkin. decided to play it around behind to chara. laid back on to pouliot. marches up the wing. shot by rolston. it popped out of play and the signal is the face-off will remain still in the washington defensive end. gregory campbell will take the offensive zone face-off for the bruins beagle went another one of these. and then schultz.

jammed on out. beagle, the bottle-up now comes from ward. over to zanon, through paille and back down. this will be an icing. >> pierre: certainly will. gregory campbell's really good in face-offs. nick backstrom has been phenomenal in face-offs all series long, through two games. this is a big opportunity for washington. gregory campbell's got to bear down here, doc. good win. solid win. >> mike: out of this scrap, handed across. zanon steers back up now to paille. paille hit there by mike green at center. got him a little high, too. played back on by backstrom. everybody knows what the deal is now, so no problem. back for semin.

started up by lucic. lucic drags, nice pass through. thornton, a shot. save made by holtby. follow-up by krejci. krejci gave across. boychuk, led up the wing. another shot. out in front again. bounced away from peverley and it's shaken back down by the caps. 3:30 to go in the first o.t. hurried ahead to lucic. taken away by backstrom and handed on the wing now for brouwer to gain the zone. he's got ovechkin. shoots one over the glove hand of thomas off the glass. yanked on by boychuk. the bruins go on the attack again. nudged up the wing for a drive. save, holtby. and the rebound came careening back out to center. troy brouwer motors ahead. shakes away from bergeron. gave it up the wing. held there by laich and a shot. it's deflected up into the mesh. and thomas angered about something at the front of the cage. >> pierre: he's angered at troy brouwer going to the net. great opportunity.

david krejci shoots this along because he knows he has lucic gone. lucic is gone. but holtby gets the puck just past him. you see troy brouwer right there. tim thomas, not in my house, don't want you there. >> mike: laich and bergeron. bergeron won it. but it's taken on by brouwer. held up by seidenberg. help came from bergeron. up the boards, carlson. punched it on back and chara read that one. so seidenberg, 2:45 to go here in the first overtime period. marchand brought it ahead. tapped it back in deep. carlson there, stymied a bit. played back by brouwer and given back to center where chara lobs it back in. the bruins pour out and circle right back. a change as bergeron comes to the bench. seguin and marchand are out there right now.

kelly up front with chara and seidenberg in back. carlson gives back over to alzner. thomas blocked that one away. ovechkin comes to the bench with laich. beagle remains out. handed over to chara again. perreault is out there as well as chimera up front for the caps. they change for hamrlik and green on the defense. green tries to reach. moves in. jostles there with pouliot. spun by kelly and a save made by holtby. turned around behind again and it's kelly with it once more. run into by hamrlik. chimera tries to work it ahead. it's dealt back in deep by paille. pouliot left it behind. yanked back on. pouliot losing to green. and then rolston menacing. then pouliot. wanted it for campbell as the bruins continue to make changes here. rushing on back and guiding it across, corvo. then to zanon. in the last 1:22 of the first

overtime. this one ladled back out. zanon has some trouble with it now but is able to get enough space. then he shoves a pass that is off campbell and then on back to green. circling with this now is backstrom. led it back up the wing. trouble came there for johansson. and then johansson took care of zanon. back up the boards and peverley has it. final minute of play of h first overtime. fed back across to paille. and the shot was deflected to the corner by wideman. more sparring at the half boards, taking it behind is backstrom. nicklas backstrom in only his fifth game back from missing 40. sees wideman hand it on across an get the return pass. schultz led it ahead. spiked back in by brouwer. boychuk to get that twisted on to ference. half a minute to go. lucic able to flip it back out. played back up the wing. trying to shake by is krejci.

hey, everyone. welcome to your subway intermission report. liam mchugh with mike milbury and keith jones. after 80 minutes of action from boston, all tied at 1. we have witnessed over 140 minutes of ice time in this series. two goals so far. alexander semin can be a dynamic talent. he can be a frustrating talent. word associated with him, at least might be gritty, a gritty alex semin? >> a tremendously gritty performance from alexander semin. outstanding job by the

washington capitals' forward that can score with the best of them but is not known for this. defensive, hard work, winning battles, diving right there in overtime to take the puck away from milan lucic. watch him here. this is what we know him best for. misses the net. he must be exhausted because of all the work he's doing in his own zone. blocking the shot by zdeno chara. coming up with the puck battles. he's back, mike green, beautiful. diving play. both players, green and semin, get questioned about their responsibilities defensively. both guys, a big reason why the capitals are still in this hockey game. >> coming into this series, we spent a lot of time talking up the match-up between zdeno chara and alexander ovechkin and probably rightfully so. but as these series evolve, other one-on-one match-ups emerge. are we seeing another excellent one emerge here? >> we are. when you see a coach like dale hunter take over, you're going to look for nasty, gritty play. we saw it with semin and with green.

you're going to see it with everybody on the washington capitals team. mathieu perreault is not known for his grittiness. but he goes man to man with patrice bergeron throughout this game and it makes for some interesting stuff. interesting moments. but this was -- right off the draw, you can see the cross-check, bergeron could be lady byng or selke or whatever, not known for that. but right back at you comes perreault. this is the stuff playoffs are made of. expect this to continue. what's at stake now is not getting etch, it's getting the win tonight. and the caps need it. >> and neither guy really known for that type of hockey. bergeron's got some grit to his game. it's underrated how tough he is. perreault not known for that type of hockey. that's what hockey is. they bring guys like perreault up another level f. you're dale hunter, you're pleased to see him battling like that. >> this season in the nhl, pekka

rinne, henrik lundqvist, jonathan quick on the list of vezina candidates. if you have to pick -- it is tim thomas. he was right on top of it in this overtime session. talk about competitive. he wound up hacking and whacking around there. but nothing seems to rattle this guy. and there's no situation that he doesn't seem to have an answer for. got a little lucky there because the puck squirted through a couple of capitals. but it may be over if not for tim thomas being as focused as now experienced he is, now committed to winning another championship. this is a great period for thomas. good news for bruins fans. >> tested more than braden holtby in that overtime session. give the capitals credit. generating offensive opportunities. but if you're holtby, you're sitting in that dressing room, just saw tim thomas make three or four "a" quality saves, it has to get in the back of your head just a little bit. >> so far, braden holtby has
