we know it involves prostitution, and now, members of the u.s. military. good evening, i'm chris gordon. we begin tonight with with a developing story in the midwest. a massive storm has spawned more than 70 tornados, including one in western kansas. the national weather service calls it life threatening weather. storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell has the latest. >> the the tornado count continues to climb, now above 80 reported tornados just today alone. the high risk area for severe weather continues as we go into the late night hours here, big thunderstorms here. lone supercell thunderstorms roaring across southern kansas right now. that's about 600,000 people. the tornado sirens are sounding this is a tornado producing supercell thunderstorm headed up on to the south sides of wichita, kansas. more big thunderstorms here in northern parts of kansas, and

that severe weather line goes into parts of iowa, have their hospital take a direct hit from the severe weather out there. all this is marching into the great lakes. we'll tell what you this means for us coming up into the forecast in a few minutes. we head to jay gray in oklahoma city. >> that's a funnel cloud. no doubt about it 37. >> getting intense now. >> reporter: the storms began popping this evening. multiple tornados on the ground in oklahoma. >> big debris cloud. >> and more storms ripping across kansas, early on more than 60 twisters reported across at least four states. and it's only the beginning of what could be a dangerous night. >> the atmosphere and the way it's set up, we're expecting widespread outbreak for severe thunderstorms. extremely large hail, and very damaging long track tornados. >> reporter: the national weather service has issued a rare high risk warning for the central and southern plains,

prime conditions in place for what they call strong to violent tornados. the early twisters were wide and moving quickly. >> the multiple vortex. >> reporter: leaving a path of twisted metal and splintered wood and a growing fear that more are on the way. many striking after nightfall. >> that's really what we're concerned about, if we get into these long track tornados during the nighttime hours. >> the concern is what many may find in the morning light, as the violent system continues to cut across the midwest. jay gray, nbc news, oklahoma city. now to the new developments rocking the secret service. 11 agent s have been placed on administrative leave. several members of the group are accused spending a night with prostitutes, while preparing for the president's trip to columbia, now members of the military are under investigation as well. kristen welker has our report. >> according to u.s. officials,

the allegations involve at least 11 members of the u.s. secret service and five u.s. military members here in colombia. they're alleged to have brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms there, was a dispute over a payment, which was brought to the attention of authorities. according to the defense department, the service members are confined to quarters here. the secret service says their personnel were sent home before the president's arrival and replaced with others. >> the president was made aware of the incident in question yesterday. the white house was informed thursday evening. >> representative peter king chairman of the house homeland security committee has been briefed on the evolving scandal. >> two of the 11 were supervisors, i did not ask if they were march rid or not. >> this really is the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service. >> ron kessler who wrote in the president's secret service says the incident could be indicative a larger problem within the

agency. >> what the agency needs is an outside director who can come in and clean house. change the standards. >> now the alleged misconduct occurred at this hotel, which is about five minutes from where the president is staying. the secret service says it will launch a full scale internal investigation and we should say that prostitution is legal in some parts of colombia. traveling with the president in colombia, kristen welker, nbc news. dick cheney made his first public appearance since his heart transplant three weeks ago. he had that surgery. today he spoke for well over an hour at the wyoming republican party convention in cheyenne. people say cheney seemed strong and walked on stage without any assistance. an anne arundel county police officer is being questioned after fatally shooting a man during a domestic dispute call. it happened last night in the 800 block of cross valley lane.

when police arrived they heard a woman screaming. authorities say one of the officers, a four-year veteran of the department web with the inside and was confronted by gary pettry. pettry was eventually shot in the upper body. a female was taken to the hospital. she's expected to be okay. fire destroyed a home in herndon today. the flames broke out around 3:00 p.m. one person was home at the time. he got out safely, but his three cats are still missing. the cause the fire still under investigation. red cross will help the two people who lived in the home. another turn in the battle to redevelop alexandria's waterfront. the city council called on the city attorney to leave its legal fight to rezone the waterfront as recently approved. yesterday the board of zoning appeals ruled the council wrongly denied a protest petition. those who oppose the plan worry that new parks, hotels and

dangerously close to them. animal shelter volunteers have named the dog grace. she will now be put up for adoption. the space shuttle discovery rolled out of its hanger at the kennedy space center for the very last time this morning. discovery will piggyback on a modified 747 to washington on tuesday. the shuttle will fly low over the national mall beforehanding at dulles. it will be placed on display at the national air and space museum in chantilly. a big celebration for the founder of resten, virginia. robert simon turned 98 years old last tuesday. he spent his life as a major power player in the northern virginia real estate market. today the town honored simon on the ninth annual founders day. there was lots of music, food, a treasure hunt and cake. resten was founded in 1964. happy birthday, resten, virginia. next, a titanic anniversary, how the disaster was re-created

meanwhile, big severe weather continues to explode across parts northern oklahoma, kansas, nebraska and roaring across parts of eastern iowa and western parts of illinois. we won't need to worry about severe weather around here. just passing sprinkles during the overnight hours tonight. that will be gone before you get up in the morning. clouds to start, but afternoon sunshine with a nice southwest breeze setting up shop for tomorrow. quiet weather tomorrow night and feeling oh, so summer like as we get into the day monday. temperatures somewhere in virginia may touch 90 on monday. for overnight tonight, cloudy skies, one or two sprifrpg els, that's about it. overnight lows holding into the 50s. then tomorrow, cloudy skies in the morninging turning mostly sunny and toasty warm. tomorrow's highs generally in the low to mid-80s. monday will be the warmest in the bunch with high 80s.
