involving secret service in colombia. good afternoon, everyone. i'm barbara harrison in for pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. today the scandal is widening. nbc news is learning that more secret service members are under investigation for misconduct than first thought. misconduct that allegedly includes soliciting prostitutes in colombia. >> those agents are now on administrative leave but as brian mohr reports the white house and congress are demanding answers. >> reporter: as many as 20 members of the secret service are now under investigation for what they did when they were not preparing for president obama's weekend summit trip to colombia. the allegations include alcohol, hookers, and a wild party in a five-star hotel. >> unbelievable. anybody who's watched a spy movie knows you go in with the girls. you plant the bugs. you compromise the agents. what were these guys thinking? >> reporter: members of congress are demanding answers and so is the president, whose summit agenda was over shadowed by the

reports of the secret service shenanigans. the agents involved were not part of the elite presidential protective division but some reportedly were part of what is called the counterassault team. five members of the military were also caught up in the scandal. >> we're embarrassed by what occurred in colombia though we're not sure exactly what it is. >> reporter: while the secret service is promising a full investigation the agency, itself, is facing scrutiny. again, back in 2009 the secret service was under fire after a reality tv wanna-bes the salehis crashed a white house state dinner, but this is different. >> there is no question this is the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service and these agents could have been blackmailed by these prostitutes to let a terrorist in. >> they're out there and representing a lot more than just the secret service. they're representing america. >> reporter: allegations of a

wild night threatening to taint the name of the secret service. members of congress are talking about the possibility of hearings and looking at broad problems with the management of secret service. on capitol hill, brian mohr, news 4. well, we've had a real summary kind of day out there today. >> yeah. meteorologist chuck bell is outside in it on the front lawn. was it my imagination, chuck, or did we have a little humidity out there today? >> just a little. it's like a presummer hint of humidity coming our way. dew point temperatures, which is the real way you measure whether it ae's humid, we had the dew points cross the 60-degree line and by summer time standards 60 is when you start to notice the humidity and 70-degree dew points are when you start complaining inconsolably about the humidity. today not so bad. toasty warm. 88 degrees now at national airport with a very stiff south breeze and 20 miles per hour. because of the high heat now we've been able to mix our dew points back down into the mid 50s so our relative humidity is only 32% now. it was a little bit higher a few

hours ago. the other half of the equation, of course, from the suffering standpoint is the pollen count which is off the charts again today. 1,228 drains of pollen every minute of your life that you breathe in during the outside. very, very bad pollen for today. unfortunately, no rain on the radar. we are dry, warm. we need the showers. there are rain drops across southern and western parts of west virginia. i think about 99% of those rain drops will dry up as they try and come up spine of the appalachians. not much of a rain chance over here. overnight lows on the mild side for sure. back down to the upper 50s and low 60s. mild and dry evening. a super day for the space shuttle. flying into town tomorrow we'll talk about that part of the forecast and any rain drops anywhere on the seven-day forecast to help with the pollen situation? we'll talk about that in a couple more minutes. back into the air conditioned but pollen free studio. >> all right. thank you, chuck. an aerial assault across the

central and southern plains on saturday. about 100 tornadoes ripped through the midwest killing at least six people. dozens of others are injured. jay gray reports. >> reporter: monday began with more tragic news in woodward, oklahoma, a city already struggling. >> almost no words over it. >> reporter: the office of emergency management reporting another victim of the storms died overnight. that brings to six the number of people killed by the violent twister that ripped through the community, including a father and his two young daughters. >> they were grandma and grandpa's girls. and it's just going to be hard without them. >> reporter: 89 homes were destroyed in woodward alone. curt and andrea raymer were huddled inside their bath tub when the twister sheared off their roof. >> i saw the tornado come up over the toch the hill and hollered in at andrea asking her to get to the bathroom as quick as she could.

>> i wrapped my arm and legs around him and said please don't let me go. please. just hang on to me. and all of a sudden it was just that sound of wood being ripped away from wood. >> reporter: the raymers like so much of woodward right now are cleaning up with the help of volunteers. more than 100 tornadoes ripped through the heartland this weekend. >> boom. and that's all we heard. >> reporter: yvonne tucker and her son are alive today they say because of a shelter inside their mobile home park. >> it saved my life. >> reporter: their home was not saved and there was little left to be salvaged. >> found some pictures of family members. other than that i don't think we can keep any of this stuff. >> reporter: so many across the plains will continue to sift through mounds of debris for a long time as they also try to heal from the latest devastating blow from mother nature. jay gray, nbc news, woodward, oklahoma. afghan leaders say a militant network is behind this

weekend's series of brazen and coordinated attacks in kabul. the militant group has ties to the taliban and al qaeda. the attacks lasted for 18 hours and targeted western embassys. government buildings and nato bases there. three civilians and eight police officers were killed when militants used suicide bombers and rocket grenades to bombard the buildings. 36 insurgents were also killed. the taliban says the attacks were in response to nato commanders calling the taliban weak. the man accused of plotting to blow up new york city's subway system went on trial today. prosecutors say he discussed bombing movie theaters, grand central terminal, times square, and the new york stock exchange before the subways there were two other accused plotters but they all pleaded guilty in the case and plan to testify and implicate matajonin in the deadliest threat since 9/11. the three went to high school together.

it's a solemn day of classes at j virginia tech university as the campus marks five years since a shooting rampage took the lives of 32 people there. we have more on how students and faculty are still healing from the tragedy. >> reporter: the drill field here at the heart of the virginia tech campus is both a place to remember the 32 who were killed and to celebrate the whole community that helped the campus get through the tragedy that hit april 16th, 2007. this is the first time classes have been held on the anniversary since the shooting but many students are still taking a detour today to stop by the memorial at the center of the drill field. some of them are simply pausing for reflection. others are adding their own flowers to displays put there by the university. a community picnic is also giving students, staff, and alumni another place to come together. students picked up we remember stamps on their hands and even freshmen will tell you it is their duty to honor the 32 who

died. >> you have to remember those 32. we're a community and will always prevail and remember no matter what just sets the tone. even though it was in the past, it still affects the future. >> virginia governor bob mcdonnell is coming here tonight and he with thousands of others will gather here on the drill field for a candlelight vigil that starts at 7:30. an emergency landing injured 15 people and stopped all air traffic in and out of london's gatwick airport this morning. a virgin atlantic plane headed for orlando was forced to return to the airport. air traffic was stopped for about an hour and a half while crews figured out the technical problem. airport officials say that created a ripple effect, which created delays all day long. republican presidential candidate mitt romney is moving ahead as the presumptive nominee and part of that process includes selecting and vetting possible running mates. romney has chosen long-time

adviser beth meyers to manage the search for a vice president. meyers served as romney's chief of staff when he was governor of massachusetts. she has worked with him for ten years and she as senior adviser on his presidential campaign. her duties have included overseeing romney's preparation for the republican primary debates. the so-called buffet rule is expected to fail a key procedural vote in the senate later today. the rule is named after billionaire investor warren buffet and would require americans who earn more than $1 million a year to pay income tax of at least 30%. president obama is urging the senate to pass it. the latest gallup poll shows 60% of americans favor the rule while 37% are opposed to it. republicans say the rule is an effort to distract voters from the overall economy. it's a day of celebration here in d.c. as the district marks emancipation day. a parade was held on pennsylvania avenue today to mark 150 years since president lincoln officially ended slavery in the district.

the signing of the d.c. emancipation act freed more than 3,000 slaves. a street party and concert took place on freedom plaza today after the parade. d.c.'s emancipation day events will wrap up with fireworks on pennsylvania avenue and 12th street at 8:30 tonight. some agriculture department workers had an unexpected day off. an overnight electrical fire and gas leak shut down three usda buildings in downtown d.c. today. those who reported for work found the whitten, south, and reporters' buildings closed. the closures were announced on the usda employee information line but not everyone got word. the usda says employees should keep checking the hot line to find out about their building status for tomorrow. the number is 1-800-932-1902. the verizon center will be noisy tonight. >> game three between the bruins and caps starts at 7:30 tonight.

but a huge, hundred-foot halogram life-sized on stage with snoop and dray performing. it was without question the most talked about part of the music festival. everybody tweeting about it. jerry ferreira from entourage said i'm backing off twitter until this dies down. a big deal. so nice they'll do it twice. cocella festival is now two weekends in a row so the whole thing happens this coming weekend as well. if you missed it, you can hop on a plane, come out and check it out while there is still time. >> we got to see it. the papparazzi has dumped pippa middleton, everybody loves her, they've dubbed her, her royal hotness. they say she is in hot water right now. tell us about that. >> over the weekend she was in paris with some friends. she was at a fancy dress party, a big to do she gets invited to and she was in a car, convertible with three guys and the guy in the front, i don't know if it was a fake or real, certainly looks real, papparazzi

trailing them obviously trying to get a shot of pippa. the guy turns around and he points the pistol at the papparazzi. look, if it's a real gun, the guy faces up to seven years. if it's a fake it's up to two years but she is sitting alongside with him so is implicated as well and could be in some legal trouble. right now as of now the papparazzi have not filed a complaint. no witnesses are pressing this with the police so they're leaving it alone. back to the glorification of her rear end and the huge star it and she became at the royal wedding, you know, this is not the kind of light you want to shed especially in the queen's diamond jubilee year celebrating 60 years on the throne. as they say in musical theater, you know, what is the trouble with maria? how do we solve a problem like pippa? is she now, you know, a little bit of an issue? i say give her a job. give her a job in buckingham palace. you can keep your eye on her. >> keep her busy.

five guitars that belong to the band were stolen from a southern california sound stage where the heart breakers have been rehearsing for an upcoming tour. the band is offering a reward of $7500 bucks with no questions asked. for information at least for the return of the instruments. two of the stolen guitars belonged to petty, himself. a gibson and a vintage 12 string rikenbocker. no one can get out of paying taxes not even big named celebrities. when they don't pay it makes headlines. california tax authorities say pam anderson is on the state's list of biggest income tax delinquents and claim she owes more than $524,000. meanwhile, e-online reports lionel ritchie owes the federal government more than a million dollars. sources say he has been issued a warning that his assets may be seized if he doesn't pay in a timely manner. coming up on news 4 our local singer gets ready for another live performance on "the voice" and we'll go live to los angeles at 4:30. >> this is her night.

i told you earlier it felt like august out there today at noon. >> no kidding. we've made it to 88 degrees now which is one of our highest average high temperatures. late july, first week of august our average high temperature is the hottest time of the year for us. 88, 89 degrees. that's where we are today. so a little preview of august. minus the summer levels of humidity. it was a little touch humid outside early this morning but has turned into a very nice afternoon. albeit on the toasty warm side. plenty of sunshine and a very strong south to southwesterly breeze. winds out of the south right now. 20, gusting to 26 miles per hour. current temperature at national airport, hottest day of the year so far. 88 degrees already. and that's back-to-back 80-degree days in a row. we made 83 yesterday. we're not the only ones enjoying the warmth. look at this. winchester, virginia, congrats. 90 degrees out there. i talked about it all weekend. i said, somebody somewhere in virginia might touch 90 degrees today. winchester, you're the big winner. petersburg, west virginia up in the mountains, 92.

cumberland, maryland 91. 89 degrees in waldorf and la plata. overnight tonight with a mostly clear sky. temperatures will fall back but only into the upper 50s and low 60s. not really a cold start in the morning at all. storm 4 radar has nothing on it around here just yet but there are showers fading away. as they do they're coming up into parts of south central west virginia now. unfortunately, you can sort of get a sense as they're coming northbound and eastbound they're losing a bit of aerial coverage. the deeper moisture is well down across parts of the south. georgia, alabama, mississippi down toward new orleans and houston. heavy thunderstorms in and around houston. if you have friends or relatives or flight plans that change in houston, could have some delays there. and heavy weather just not too far from the atlanta airport as well. and on the other side of the system? well, we're 90 degrees. ironwood, michigan 19 degrees. with a north wind and ice and fog and snow. 19 degrees in april? burr. for us, what we need is some rain. average rainfall to this point in the year 10.5 inches.

so far we haven't had 5 inches of rain this year. we really could use some rain showers. this little weather front coming through, not hardly enough moisture along it to bring us much of a rain chance. a few scattered shower possibilities coming up on wednesday but that's it. this evening clear skies and warm. evening temperatures mid to upper 70s. tomorrow here is something you're going to want to do tomorrow. get down to the national mall somewhere along the potomac, national harbor, between 10:00 and 11:00 tomorrow morning. the space shuttle discovery flying into washington, piggybacked on the back of a 747. they're going to do a nice low and slow loop around the national mall so everybody can get a picture and so discovery can take a look at congress which defunded its programming. for the rest of the day tomorrow after that's done it's going to be a gorgeous day. nowhere near as warm as today. a 10-degree drop in temperatures tomorrow back to the mid and upper 70s. this is the warmest day of the week by far. tomorrow we bring in the cooling trend and there is talk of rain chances closer to the weekend. >> we could use it with this pollen. >> 1228 was the pollen count

welcome back at 4:30. i'm jim handly. >> i'm barbara harrison in for pat lawson muse. nbc news has learned that at least 20 members of the secret service are now under investigation for misconduct in colombia. that's more than first thought. the agency first announced. the agents are accused of bringing prostitutes to the hotel rooms and holding wild parties while they were preparing for president obama's weekend visit to that country. congress and the white house are angry and demanding answers. six people are reported dead. dozens of others injured from a series of deadly tornadoes that swept through the midwest on saturday adding to the trouble in woodward, oklahoma. the early warning sirens didn't go off because they were damaged in the storm earlier in the day. a bell rang out 32 times at virginia tech this morning as the campus remembers the 32 victims killed on this day five

years ago. when a mentally ill student went on a shooting rampage. today was the first time the university held classes on april 16th since the tragedy. governor bob mcdonald is expected to address the campus during a vigil tonight. it's a mixed day for stocks on wall street with the dow reanr reacting to positive retail sales for march and the nasdaq being dragged down by apple and google both losing. the s&p 500500 was down three points on the day. 16 performers at "the voice." this week we will see eight performers hit the stage among them your hometown favorite erin willett. we'll see team blake and team christina. there are also a few surprises in store tonight including an instant elimination. before we get to that let's talk about what happened a couple weeks ago when your hometown favorite, again, erin willett, hit the stage. erin has been very popular in this competition. two weeks ago from team blake america saved erin with jermaine paul and ray lind. we caught up with erin and talked about her experiences so far here on "the voice" and her chance of moving forward. >> i think i do have a place here and i have a fan base now which is weird to say and now i remember i had a talk with someone about it's not so much me going out there and proving myself. it's me going out and making my fans proud now. you know, to say like, i've supported her from the beginning. so that's really cool, to say

that there are people behind me pushing me, driving me to get on the stage and deliver. incredible. >> reporter: all right. so here is what we can expect tonight. here's how it's expected to go down. each team coach, blake and christina, will get up and perform with their four remaining contestants. then we'll see those individual performances from the eight remaining singers. at the end of the night both blake and christina will have to send one singer home so that leaves three singers. at that point america will cast their votes and tomorrow we'll learn which top vote getter america saved and then we'll see the remaining two will have to do a sing off for survival. each coach will then pick one remaining and they will send one person home. that is how it's all expected to go down. excitement begins hours from now right here on nbc. >> we'll be watching. we also hear speaking of coaches it's a big night for adam levine. what has he got up his sleeve? >> indeed. we talked about a couple surprises. we are going to see a

performance from maroon 5 tonight singing a hit single off their latest album. that should be really good of course as well. >> all right. >> looking forward to it. >> she is doing us proud. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> sure. musician jack lite of the white stripes fame is kicking off his first solo album with a concert streamed live online. the esent is set for friday, april 27th at 9:00 p.m. the first installment in the third season of the unstaged series that pairs top musical acts with renowned filmmakers. white is being paired with english filmmaker and actor gary oldman. next tuesday white is releasing blunder bus, the first solo album from the former white stripe. some of baseball's heavy hitters could be in the lineup for potential witnesses for the roger clemens perjury retrial. clemens is accused of lying under oath to a congressional committee about whether he ever used performance-enhancing

drugs. jury selection got under way today. prosecutors say they may call former players barry bonds, jose canseco, also defense attorneys could be calling teammates paul o'neill and jorge posada. the first trial ended in a mistrial you'll recall last summer. the first time also a bust for a colorado man trying to become the denver broncos first male cheerleader. >> his name is sasha hepple. he joined 200 women yesterday to participate in open trials held by the team and called the chance to perform his routine amazing. >> i'm going to try out to be the first male broncos cheerleader. ever. it's huge. i'm excited. totally thrilled. no male has ever made it through auditions. i don't even know if a male even made it to the auditions. >> afterwards hepple admitted he messed up a few times. the judges agreed and cut him from the competition. hepple says he is disappointed but undeterred. he plans to keep practicing and

will try out again next year he says. >> they lost tim tebow, toochlt the broncos are hurting all around. >> try out for another team. i thought he looked pretty good. the world's tallest dog gets his notice on the "today" show. >> giant george is 7'1". from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. on the other end of the spectrum from beyonce a diminutive dog grabbing the headlines for her small size recently so the folks at the "today" show felt it was fair to get the big guy some glory, too >> he runs and almost gallops like a pony. it's incredible for a dog this big to see him running the way that he does. he is very active. his legs were sprawling all over that twin sized bed and we had to bring it up to a queen sized bed. >> look how big he is. >> enormous. the great dane lives with his family in tucson and weighs in, get this, 245 pounds. that's about 100 more than your

today is pope benedict's 85th birthday and the celebration had a bavarian theme, his native land. the children dressed in traditional bavarian clothing danced and recited a poem. the pope's brother and bishops from bavaria were also on hand to mark the day. there will be more celebrations thursday when he marks his seventh anniversary of election as pope. there was a huge dance party in north korea to celebrate what would have been the 100th birth dave the nation's founding president kim il-sung. men in white shirts and ties and women in colorful gowns swirled across the square named for him and the event included a fireworks display and remarks from the nation's new leader kim jong un. green is universal week at nbc 4.

surgeons finds the chin is in. >> more people are getting chin implants than ever before. doctors say video chat technology may be behind this boost. erica edwards reports. >> reporter: lizzette stevens as project manager for a software company and spends most of her day talking to executives and clients via video chat. >> they've noticed that i was not happy with the profile of my face and the way it projected on video and pictures. >> reporter: her solution was a chin implant. >> this is the kind of operation that whispers. it doesn't shout. >> reporter: plenty of people are talking about it. more than 20,000 americans had the procedure done just last year. >> chin augmentation has increased approximately 70% in the last year. that's an astonishing number. >> reporter: dr. derrick antel a spokesman for the american society of plastic surgeons says a strong chin not only improves the patient's self-esteem but may also boost their bottom line. >> 90% of the ceos had chins that were larger than normal or

some women are going to extreme measures to look their best on their wedding day. >> they are turning to a controversial procedure by eating through a feeding tube to lose weight. amy robach has our report. >> reporter: the invitations have been sent. the gown has been chosen. but for some brides to be there is still one thing left to check off their wedding-to-do list. shed those unwanted pounds. studies show that 70% of engaged women want to be about 20 pounds lighter for their big day. and now some are going to extreme measures to reach that goal. >> people want to be perfect in this country. >> reporter: at his clinic in bay harbor island's florida dr. oliver dipietro has been offering brides the k-e diet a
