degrees at last hour. if you're wondering how that falls, we missed the record high. as you take a look at the next graphic here, by about four degrees in most locations. the exception? baltimore, maryland. last hour the temperature was 89 degrees. 90 is the record and from all locations that was set back in 2002. so we're in the 80s right now and talking about cooling off and talking about getting some relief from the pollen today, which is almost double from last week. i'll have more on that coming up. >> all right. thank you. and now to the cleanup in the midwest. experts say 75 tornadoes touched down over the weekend in several states. one of the hardest hit areas is woodward, oklahoma, where the warning sirens didn't go off because they were damaged by a lightning strike earlier in the day. still, the early warnings from forecasters allowed many people to be ready for trouble. we'll have more on the deadly storms from the weather channel's eric fisher. he is in oklahoma. that's coming up in about ten minutes. it is a day of remembrance at virginia tech today as the

campus marks five years since the shooting rampage that took the lives of 32 people. while the community is still healing it is also celebrating the unity born out of the tragedy. julie carey has more now from blacksburg. >> reporter: this year is the first time classes have been held on april 16th since the shooting occurred but it's far from an ordinary day here in blacksburg as students, faculty, and alumni find ways to remember the 32. at the memorial, there was a steady procession. the emotions stirred by memories of april 16th, 2007 still clear to see on some faces. this woman added her own flower to the displays placed there by the university. this virginia tech senior who came to pay her respects says she thinks of the victims every time she passes the memorial. >> it feels like as if i knew these people and we still shed the tears for them as a community. >> reporter: the five-year mark did not bring all sadness, though. a community picnic was set up on the drill field, a chance for

hokies to celebrate the unity and resolve that helped the campus keep going. stamped on many a hand, we remember. this sophomore, whose grandfather taught at virginia tech, knew three of the victims of april 16th. >> it's a sad day, but i think this event especially is a good thing because it kind of is more of a celebration of, like, the community we have here. i think that's the thing we want everyone to remember is not the negative parts of it but that virginia tech has such a strong knit community and that, you know, we want to share that with people. >> reporter: for the first time this year a special gallery was set up to display some of the artifacts of support sent in from across the nation. visitors also made their own contributions, writing messages on rocks and placing them in a spiral. this tech alum whose daughter was on campus in 2007 says she has come on april 16th three of the past four years. >> i'm a true hokey, and love my school, love the hokey nation,

and just my way of honoring the victims and the survivors. >> reporter: thousands are expected to gather on the drill field tonight at 7:30 along with governor bob mcdonald for a candlelight vigil. then at midnight the memorial candle will be extinguished until next year. in blacksburg, julie carey, news 4. in addition to the 32 virginia tech victims today advocates gathered on behalf of the 32 americans who they say are killed by gun violence every single day. virginia tech survivor collin godard was among the dozens who spoke out on the hill today. he was shot four times on this day in 2007. he and others including virginia congressman jim moran said discussions on passing stricter gun laws are long overdue. >> if today the fifth anniversary of the worst shooting in our country's history is not the time, if tomorrow when 32 more americans will be killed from gunfire is not the time, which day is the

time? >> activists are campaigning against two senate bills which they called the george zimmerman vigilante act. they could make it easier for some gun owners to carry concealed weapons in public places. the sex scandal involving secret service members may involve more people than first thought. nbc news has learned that as many as 20 agents and five members of the military are under investigation for misconduct in colombia. they're accused of bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms and holding wild parties while preparing for president obama's weekend visit to that country. the president and congress are angry and they're demanding answers. >> unbelievable. anybody who's watched a spy movie knows you go in with the girls. you plant the bugs. you compromise the agents. what were these guys thinking? >> we're embarrassed by what occurred in colombia though we're not sure exactly what it is. >> the agents involved are now on administrative leave and the

agency has revoked their top-secret security clearances. a bitter end to a sweet 16 party at a prince george's county home. police tell us two teens were stabbed after a group of people showed up uninvited and a fight broke out. it happened saturday night on poplar ridge road in brandywine. darcy spencer has our report. >> reporter: police say it was a sweet 16 birthday party that was crashed by some uninvited guests. how did they know about a party here in a remote area of prince george's county? police say it was through social media. it was 10:30 saturday night here on poplar ridge road in brandywine. teens were at the home for a party. the crashers showed up. police say they stabbed two teens, leaving them in critical condition. >> some type of altercation occurred where we ended up having two juveniles stabbed and three others that sustained some injuries from the incident. the two were transported to local hospitals at the time they were in critical condition. they have now been released from the hospital. >> police say the crashers

learned about the party through the social media site twitter. they say it's a situation parents need to look out for. >> we want parents to be aware of social media. that seems to be the big thing today that a lot of parents are not aware of. they're not aware of the different types of social media out there. and it's definitely a learning experience. >> reporter: police say the teens' parents cooperated and there was no alcohol at the party. they're still investigating to see if the attackers knew the people in the home. >> i got two sons, 21 and 20, and two twins 5 years old. >> okay. >> and i would be really upset about it, you know what i'm saying, if that happened to my kids. >> they should have monitored everyone coming into the house. if the parents were there, but most of the time when they have parties if the parents are not on the scene, something like that might happen. >> reporter: so far no arrests have been made but police say they do expect to close this case quickly. in brandywine, maryland, darcy spencer, news 4. right now events are going on to mark the 150th anniversary

using that to rebuild the breasts. >>is is'm sure they'll have the details for your chart. >> reporter: as a nursing professor laura taylor is used to teaching others about scary diseases like cancer. when she was faced with a breast cancer diagnosis two years ago she was shocked. >> i just wanted to sit back and contemplate it first. i was concerned about lymph nodes, i was concerned about metastisis. i was concerned about what approach i was going to be taking moving forward. >> reporter: after taylor underwent a double mastectomy she knew she didn't want breast implants but was unsure about her other options until she met diop tins hospital plastic surgeon dr. aerial rad who told her she was a perfect candidate for a newer procedure that could take fat from her love handles and make new breasts. i was like, yes. that's me. i'll do a transplant of my fat

and create breasts that are me. and that was very important to me. >> this is a technique that rebuilds the entire breast from a patient's own tissue. so the way it -- what i tell patients is that once they're finished with their reconstruction they're finished forever. they're done with surgery. they don't ever have to worry about the -- any problems that you might have with implants. >> reporter: dr. rad is one of just 30 surgeons in the world doing this type of surgery. he says it can be complex and can take up to ten hours because the area around the love handles is so delicate. usually patients need about three surgeries to complete the tissue transfer and make sure the body is sculpted perfectly. >> they last forever. i mean, that's the beauty of this technique. the fat is theirs. it doesn't turn into breast tissue so there is no worry about breast cancer down the road of the reconstructed

breasts. >> it was painful. >> reporter: laura taylor had her last surgery in august and says there is still some scarring around her buttocks and breast but rad is working to min immunize it. in the meantime she says she loves her new body. >> i am thrilled with my body. thrilled. for 48 years old, i feel wonderful. >> she looks wonderful. you have to be happy for her. laura taylor says she actually had to go up a dress size because her top is bigger than it was before. not a problem in the eyes of many women i don't think. but she added that to feel so great about herself after dealing with the cancer diagnosis and everything that goes along with that it really is an amazing thing. barbara, jim? >> all right. thanks. >> great story. in other health news tonight salmonella fears prompt a bagged salad recall today. here is what we know so far. dole fresh vegetables is recalling more than 750 cases of dole seven lettuces salad. the bags have a use by date of april 11.

no illnesses are linked to the salad but salmonella was found in a random sample test in new york. the salads were sold in 15 states including maryland and virginia. it was a salad kind of day today, so hot out there. >> yes. >> what is the temperature now? >> warm weather. you want to eat something light and make sure you stay hydrated. upper 80s to around 90 degrees. that is the kind of weather when it comes up like that, when it hits you really fast, you know, from cool to really warm, when you're like, oh, wow i didn't see that coming. you start doing stuff outside, you know, if you're not hydrated right you can -- it doesn't feel good. let's head outside to see what's going on right now. we have a lot of sunshine and plenty warm. we expect a very warm evening, too. of course, we're in the upper 80s right now. the dew point temperature is at 55 degrees. once it gets into the 60s that's when you start to feel sticky and uncomfortable. so we got the july type heat today minus the july type of humidity. it sure wasn't bad. it was a little breezy at times too. our wind gusting currently at 22

miles per hour. out of the south at 16. that of course has been the reason that it's been so mild. that southerly flow bringing in the warm air. so at 5:00 we're down to 85 degrees. 80 at 7:00. short sleeves for sure here for the evening. sun sets at 7:47. a few clouds around during the overnight but a lot of clouds will be moving out as well. on radar we don't have anything to report in the immediate area on storm 4 radar but as we open it up and expand it out you can see some showers coming through west virginia. little thunderstorm there. then we've got more storms down to the south. it's all ahead of the weather front that brought the severe weather to the plains and the midwest this weekend. on saturday 135 reports of tornadoes. much less yesterday. only 13. let's go now to eric fisher who is in woodward, oklahoma with more on the storms. >> reporter: here in woodward, oklahoma a mix of emotions. we have great survival stories but, unfortunately, this was also the site of the only deadly

storm from the weekend. six fatalities confirmed here in the town of woodward. you can see the power of the storm behind me. huge piles of debris. this pile was actually part of a house that was right over here. there are three people in that home and they all got out without any major injuries. unbelievable that they managed to survive n this home we had a family that waited the storm out in their bath tub. they, too, managed to walk out afterwards after the storm so just for these people there weren't smiles today. you can replace the home and belongings. you can't replace people. that is the sad side of these types of outbreaks. what we're looking at today, fema is on the ground assessing the damage. the national weather service has rated this ef-3. that means winds could have been as fast as 165 miles per hour. veronica, back to you. >> thanks a lot. that is eric fisher from the weather channel. on the other side of the storm, some cooler air and that snow on our radar there around marquette, ironwood, some light snow, even some freezing fog up in that area, too. so cooler air is going to be

moving in. we need the rain. so far we've only gotten 4.87 inches the average at 10 abnormally dry through so much of virginia and maryland now, moderate drought coming more and more into the area. unfortunately this weather system when it comes through not going to get much at all. really more cloud cover than rain. it will be partly sunny tomorrow. then watch what happens on wednesday. that rain stays well south of us across southern maryland and the northern neck. probably only getting just a few sprinkles, some very light showers. not anything substantial. your evening, we're clear, warm. 70 to 78 degrees. then by tomorrow morning 55 to 63. big difference from today. right? yeah. the temperatures tomorrow 72 to 78 degrees. so it will be much cooler and breezy compared to the upper 80s to around 90 degrees today. wednesday will be the coolest day out of the work week and probably the best day where we could see again a little bit of rain around the area. then 70s for the end of the week. from july back to spring, right?

fast 4 ward through the headlines. today marks five years since the massacre at virginia tech. a bell rang out 32 times this morning in honor of the victims. today was the first time the university held classes on april 16th since that tragedy. nbc news has learned of at least 20 secret service agents and military officers who are now under investigation for misconduct in colombia. that's more than first thought, more than the agency first announced. the agents are accused of bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms and holding wild parties while they were preparing for president obama's weekend visit to that country. police in prince george's county are searching for the suspects who stabbed two teens at a sweet 16 party this weekend in brandywine. police tell us a group showed up at the party uninvited through social media. an argument escalated into a fight and the teens were

potential risk for riders. >> the weekend was tragic to say the least. >> the first crash happened around 10:00 am saturday on joplin road near the intersection with park headquarters road. police say a driver was attempting to make a u-turn when he crossed in front of a motorcycle. >> the collision occurred and the driver, the operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: the motorcyclist has been identified as 34-year-old christopher capeo of dumfries, virginia. the following day about 7:00 p.m. about eight miles away another crash again involving a motorcycle and a car. this one happened near the intersection with aden road. >> the motorcycle operator crossed over the lines into oncoming traffic and into the path of a vehicle. >> reporter: the motorcyclist has been identified as 22-year-old darren mitchell kirby of stafford, virginia. he die at the scene of the crash. joplin road is popular with motorcyclists. >> there are bad, nasty hills and curves, so you really got to watch out on that road. >> reporter: john simpson suited

up and took us for a ride from a two wheel perspective, a road with little margin for error. crash scene investigators returned to the scene of sunday's crash. it wasn't too far from a crash last summer where a motorcyclist lost his life. while the road has a reputation that motorists do well to heed, police say it's not the road. it's the people on it. >> people who know this area, know joplin road, tn's windy and there are hills on the road and it narrows down a little bit in certain spots. but there are warning signs all along the road. there are safe, posted speed limits on the road to warn drivers. >> reporter: and now there is yet another tale of carnage, of lives lost, to ride with those who ride joplin road. >> you're driving for two on a motorcycle. you watch everything around you intensely. it's about paying attention. >> reporter: derrick ward, news 4. police don't believe speed or alcohol were factors in either of those crashes. >> a warning tonight from police about a robbery scheme where

victims are lured from the safety of their own cars by a staged accident. police in montgomery county tell us they're situating at least two incidents that happened this month here on jones lane in potomac. the first happened on april 3rd. investigators say a woman was rammed from behind. she called police and the person that hit her drove away. last week there was a similar incident. police say this time the man got out of his car. >> in the second incident the man who was struck got out of his vehicle to confront the suspects and he instead was confronted by two masked men who then duct taped him and put him in the trunk of his own vehicle. >> reporter: police say the victim was driven to atms and force today take out money and was released at a nearby church. the car that hit him is described as a white truck or suv with maryland tags. the search is on for a man who shot a rite aid employee in a botched roobary attempt last friday. the man seen entering the store is accused of shooting an

employee at this pharmacy on rhode island avenue northeast. the employee was left with critical injuries. the suspect is wanted for assault with intent to kill. security has been increased at that store since the shooting. new information on the university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. a judge announced today formal sentencing for george huguely will be on august 30th. huguely was found guilty in february of second-degree murder and grand larceny in the death of yardley love. a jury recommended a 26-year prison sentence but a judge will get the final say. he can either accept the recommendation or reduce the sentence but he cannot give huguely more time behind bars. some agriculture department employees had an unexpected day off today. an overnight electrical fire and gas leak shut down the usda south, whitten, and reporters buildings downtown. megan mcgrath was there when some people who reported for work were turned away. >> reporter: a lot of folks

could be seen standing outside the usda this morning because they reported for work only to find out that everything is closed due to an early morning fire. it came as a surprise to many at the usda. they arrived at work this morning to find their co-workers standing out on the street. >> i came over around the side of the building off the bus and there are some people outside. i'm like oh, that's a bit strange. then i go up and there is a security guard and she is saying, no. can't go in. the building is closed. >> the usda, south, and whitten buildings are closed today. the problem? an overnight electrical fire. the agency posted an update on the employee information line but word of the closure didn't reach many. they arrived at work only to be turned away. for those who took vre or the marc train getting home proved to be a bit difficult. >> all here trying to arrange rides home because for me i come in on a train, the first train

for discovery's final flight and it is expected to be a crowd pleaser. the shuttle will arrive here on top of a giant 747 jet tomorrow morning flying over many of d.c.'s historic landmarks. erika gonzalez has a preview of tomorrow's festivities. >> it's time. it's done its job. >> reporter: after 39 successful missions, the space shuttle discovery is making a big entrance into the smithsonian. tomorrow it'll make its way atop a boeing 747 from the kennedy space center in florida to the national air and space museum in chantilly after being retired. >> we're going up. >> reporter: the observation deck is where cure rater dr. valerie neil says will be one of the best places to see discovery fly low at just 1500 feet. >> the planes come in from this distance and they come in right over these trees. they will touch down on that

runway and then they're going to tow it across the airports. >> reporter: it'll then take the next two days to get discovery off the 747. but in order to make room for discovery, some things will have to go. >> this is the enterprise, the very first space shuttle that was built. >> reporter: if you want an up close and personal shot of discovery you have to get here early. 8:00 a.m. to be exact. or when the doors open here at the smithsonian tomorrow and they'll close on wednesday and reopen the doors at 8:00 a.m. on thursday for the grand procession ascent price gets wheeled out and discovery comes in. >> how big is this? >> this is huge. >> reporter: the 122-foot-long orbiter will go to the intrepid sea, air, and space museum in new york. it will be gently tugd out of the hangar on wednesday. the 57-foot-tall tail will have to go through here. you're just going to take out the one spot there in the middle? discovery will be escorted down
