experience. >> it was a real showstopper. thousands of people across our area stopped what they were doing this morning and watched the space shuttle "discovery" on its final flight. good afternoon. everybody. i'm angie goss in for pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. breaking news out of montgomery county where a massive fire destroyed a barn in poolesville. >> this is off of whites ferry road. the fire started around 1:00. fire officials said when they started to put watt other the fire the straw and hay inside the barney rupt erupted. looking up, did you see it? the historic flight began down in florida on the back of a 747 jet. wound up at dulles international airport where the shuttle will be moved to its retirement home at the smithsonian. >> before making its final landing it took a few laps

around the area. soaring above the washington monument and the white house in a salute to the nation's capital. >> as chris clackum reports, it was an emotional moment for those of -- those of you and us who witnessed it today. >> reporter: retired space shuttle "discovery" took off at day break tuesday leaving the kennedy space center for a final time. people lined beaches nearby. but "discovery" dazzled when it aarrived mid morning over d.c. >> it was amazing to see it like it is. >> what kind of picture did you get? >> actually really good! look. >> reporter: there was a dramatic flyover over the national mall. the sight framed by the capitol's iconic monuments and crowds gathered below to watch the aerial parade. >> just being able to see something so historic, it is --

wonderful. >> reporter: "discovery" is headed to the smithsonian's air and space museum for a permanent display at dulles airport near washington. that's where another crowd awaited the arrival. >> fantastic. cane believe it flew right over us. it was the most amazing experience. >> like right there. like it was -- amazing. >> reporter: the smithsonian hangar where it will reside is just off the runway where it had its final touchdown. >> she will provide a platform for inspiration for young children and citizens everywhere. >> reporter: with 39 trips into space over 28 years nasa used shuttle "discovery" is the most flown spacecraft in history. chris clackum, nbc news. >> what was so meet is all the detail you could see on the plane. you could see nasa, the tiles on the underbelly. very cool sight. >> quite a piggyback ride. across our area, folks

latest weather system? what about the next one down the line? you are going to like it. >> now to the president's race today. president obama addressed a possible threat to his re-election bid. high gas prices. he said speculators are driving up the price of gas and urged congress today to crack down on oil markets. but republicans are waging their own war for votes. they say that the president is to blame for gas prices. here is steve handelsman with our report. >> it is an election year move by president obama to take the side of the nation's suffering drivers. fuel prices are dropping a bit but still average lows to $4. and republicans are still blaming the president. >> no matter how obama spins it gas costs too much. >> reporter: today the president in part blamed illegal pricing. >> speculators artificially manipulate markets by buying up oil and creating the perception of a shortage and driving prices

higher. only to flip the oil for a quick profit. >> host: me wants tougher penalties, more oil cops on the beat than higher tech tools to track fuel prices. demanded congress go along. >> the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: since three weeks ago republicans refused to cut taxpayers' subsidies to big oil companies. >> here's a chance to make amends. >> reporter: republican house speaker john boehner accused the president of looking for a scapegoat. boehner today endorsed mitt romney. >> i think mitt romney has a set of economic policies that can put americans back to work. >> reporter: in a backyard in pennsylvania, romney says new obama environmental rules drive down domestic energy production. >> wants oil, gas, coal, nuclear, wind, sole a yet, as you point out he makes it harder and harder to take advantage of the resources that are actually below the ground. >> reporter: the president says that he wants to make it harder

for speculators to take advantage of u.s. drivers. >> the white house insists nothing any politician can do would cut fuel prices in the short term. steve handelsman, news4, capitol hill. an investigator has arrived in local about a to interview hotel staff and anyone else who may be connected to the prostitution scandal involving the secret service. they brought at least 20 foreign women to the hotel where they were staying. the hotel is less than a mile from where president obama would stay during his weekend visit to the country. there's concern whether those women posed a security threat because the agents they were with had hard copies of the president's schedule. congress may hold hearings on the matter. as americans rush to get their taxes in, lawmakers on capitol hill are demanding answers on wasteful spending of tax dollars.

welcome back. i'm jim hand. >> i i'm angie goss in for pat lawson muse. thousands in our area had their eyes to the sky to witness the final flight of the space shuttle "discovery." the "discovery" arrived on the back of a 747 after making a few victory laps around the area. it will be housed permanently at the smithsonian museum. a fired gsa official said he did not know taxpayers would be build $2,000 for a party in his hotel suite. he says he will pay the money back. today marked the second day of congressional hearings on the lavish spending at a gsa conference in vegas in 2010. an investigator arrived in colombia to interview hotel

last night on "the voice," she sang "set fire to the rain" by adelle and received very positive reviews across board. in fact, christina aguilera was somewhat complimentary which is these days seems to be less and less for some of these contestants. but you know, a lot of times the judges as well said that she gave a really strong performance. again, it was adelle. some of the judges said that adelle is just -- she is one of those artists that's very hard to sing because her songs are so unique and so strong. erin willett made it through the instant elimination and let's take the look at blake's elimination now. >> finding out there was going ton abinstant elimination was a jaw dropper and threw everybody off kilter a little bit. but i think that it is important to kind of be red write for things thrown your way

ago jesse was the front-runner. adam levine calling him the one to beat. at 42, jesse campbell is the oldest competitor here at "the voice." he was very disappointed. but nonetheless, a bit of a shocking elimination. on blake's team, of course, your local favorite, erin is safe. jordis was eliminated. she said she was very sad. she said she understood, a couple of weeks ago he was the save that blake made. america did not vote her through. she said she felt like it was fair. she was sad but still is rooting for team blake. >> an emotional mighnight. >> another biggie tonight. angelina jolie taking on a new role offstream as special envoy for the u.n.'s refugee agency. spent the past decade as goodwill ambassador. her new position will address large-scale crises driving
