scandal. two fires in five days force metro to make a drastic decision tonight for your safety. plus, a dazzling display above the nation's capital and the pageantry's not over yet for "discovery." first of breaking news, a four-alarm fire raging 12 miles west of new york city at this hour happening in elizabeth, new jersey. fire officials say the flames started in that three-story row house tonight and quickly spread to adjoining buildings. the entire block has now been evacuated. fire hoses stretch as far as six blocks and contributing to the danger for firefighters, live electrical wires. so far, no firefighters have been injured, but several residents treated for smoke inhalati inhalation. what will happen if bars and clubs make last call later? jackie benson reports the decision could be made before summer begins. >> reporter: this was the scene

at adams morgan after closing time on a summer weekend. depending on who you talk to, d.c. mayor's proposal to extend bar hours, a revenue-raising measure in his 2013 budget will make this either better or worse. >> according to the chief kathy lanier, won't be any problem, we'll be fine. there'll be plenty of officers to handle any issue. >> reporter: the proposed measure would extend bar hours from 2:00 to 3:00 a.m. on weekdays and to 4:00 a.m. on weekends. >> they park in our neighborhood, they slam their car doors at 3:00 in the morning. it's very disruptive. sometimes it gets out of control. >> reporter: ward one council member jim graham talked about the possibility of compromise. >> the idea of letting advisory neighborhood commissions say they don't want the later closing is an intriguing one. >> reporter: some believe it comes down to a battle between older, more established d.c. residents and the younger often international residents pouring in. >> at some point, we either

adapt and become a great city or somebody going to do it for us. >> reporter: the full city council is scheduled to voten o the budget, including the proposal to extend bar hours some time in late may. reporting from adams morgan, news 4. metro buses are bursting into flames and that prompted the transit agency to yank nearly 100 buses off the street. this morning, a bus caught fire on route 50 near buie, the second bus fire in five days. another bus caught fire on i-66 in fairfax on thursday. there were no injuries in either incident. both buses are models known as the o'ryan six. they have pulled all 94 orien buses. they are working to minimize the impact on passengers. >> we're going to spend the afternoon hours reconfiguring, rebalancing our bus fleet. so if everything goes according to plan, customers should not notice much of a difference at all.

>> buses first hit the streets in the d.c. area in the year 2000. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is lashing out after the senate in virginia failed to reach a budget deal over the dulles rail project. democrats want $300 million to extend the -- to help keep the toll road rates down while phase two of the rail project is being built. republicans are offering half that amount. the current budget is set to expire in just over two months. and without a new deal, the virginia government could partially shut down. >> this is a historically disappointing day for our commonwealth. to still hold the budget hostage for an 11-mile railway at the very last minute is just not responsible. >> rail to dulles is going to be an economic bonanza because of the job growth that it's going to bring. and yet somehow there is no money available for it.

>> there is a small chance a budget could pass tomorrow, but vdot has already been warned that construction projects could be stopped in 60 days. did you see it? stopping traffic and pulling people out of their homes and offices, the shuttle discovery provided a spectacular backdrop today. a spectacular scene in the skies over washington as it readies for retirement. and the old shuttle proved it still had one more amazing mission left. >> as soon as you tell me you can break out. >> reporter: a perfect touchdown for "discovery's" final flight referred to as the workhorse of nasa's shuttle program. "discovery" first lifted off back in 1984, flying 39 missions in 27 years. the most by any spacecraft ever. >> it was a spacecraft in which the first african-american was the pilot. fred gregory was the first space shuttle in which a woman was a

pilot, eileen collins. it delivered some of our most famous scientific payloads, including the hubble space telescope. >> thousands gathered to watch as discovery made several victory laps riding on the back of a boeing 747. spectators oohed and ahhed. >> it's wonderful. it's great to be there and see it's wonderful, yeah. >> to actually see the flight on top of the 747 air carrier, that was pretty cool. >> reporter: discovery will now be ready for display at the smithsonian space and air museum at dulles airport. nasa hopes in retirement it continues to inspire a new generation of space adventures. >> vehicles with names like orien, dragon, and dream chaser are being built today all across the country that will continue to expand on the space shuttle's

many accomplishments. >> what a day. now tomorrow night, crews begin the careful process of removing "discovery" from the back of that jumbo jet.xpected to take hours and involve two separate cranes. "discovery" moves into the new home on thursday. a grandmother used a toy horse to fend off a robber successfully in her home today. she moved here to take care of three grandchildren last year after her daughter died in a bizarre garage fire. she said one of the children spotted the intruder in the house this morning, saw the burglar with an armful of the family's belongings, so she grabbed the hobby horse and confronted the guy. >> and i held my hobby horse up and i said you aren't going. he grabbed my hair and pulled my neck -- pulled my head over. and shouted obscenities at me. and i recovered and said, now,

put the stuff down. >> she was able to push the man out of the house, police found him hiding behind a car around the corner and that's where they arrested him. there are new details tonight in the scandal rocking the secret service. and as more and more comes out, the worse things get for an agency charged with life and death missions. angie goff is here with the latest. >> reporter: doreen, allegations of prostitution, drinking, it's salacious in every sense of the word. but on capitol hill, it's another "s" word, security that has officials increasingly concerned. nbc news has learned the woman at the center of this whole thing complained to local police after an argument over money with two agents in colombia according to a source in the colombian government, the prostitute wanted each agent to pay full price for her services. but the agents wanted to split the bill. the dispute last wednesday night led to a call to the u.s. embassy and fast forward to today and we now know 11 secret

service agents and officers went to a strip club where they brought at least 20 women home with them to a hotel. the head of the secret service sent officers to colombia to interview the women in question. on capitol hill, senators and congressmen worry that this is not the first time this has happened. and representative peter king of new york said it's too risky to accept that national security was not compromised. he said historically, prostitutes have been used to infiltrate and get information. and congress is debating whether to call official hearings. but members of the house and senate say they are getting regular updates from mark sullivan, the secret service director who for now remains in charge of the embattled agency. jim? >> president obama wants congress to help him bring down gas prices. the president's calling for a crack down on oil speculators who manipulate markets by buying up oil and creating a perception of a shortage. he wants tougher penalties and more money to enforce them. even with his plan in place, the president admits it won't be easy.

>> none of these steps by themselves will bring gas prices down overnight. but it will prevent market manipulation. and make sure we're looking out for american consumers. >> house speaker john boehner calls the president's plan unnecessary. gas prices have fallen 2 cents over the past week according to aaa. overall, they've jumped more than 20% since december. billionaire warren buffett will undergo treatment for prostate cancer. the 81-year-old head of berkshire hathaway revealed his diagnosis today. he says he will begin daily radiation treatments in july. aside from less traveling, he expects his work schedule to remain about the same. he says his doctors say his condition is "not remotely life threatening." if you haven't filed your federal taxes, oh, you'd better hurry, folks. you have until midnight tonight. some post offices are open late to accommodate procrastinators.

a warning about this video coming up. shoppers were inside a grocery store near daytona, florida, when a car came smashing through the front doors. ten people in the store were hurt, two of them with serious injuries.

the 76-year-old driver of the car was not hurt. he's been charged with reckless driving. police say alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. fire crews are working to figure out what caused a blaze at the haunted monster museum in natural bridge, virginia. crews had to drive their tanker trucks through the wooded area last night. the fire spread and burned about 5 acres before it was put out. damage to the building is described as heavy. here came the bride all dressed in white beaming with pride and ikea on her side. it was a ceremony never before seen. and as shamari stone reports, it was a dream. >> reporter: they joined together in holy matrimony in ikea in college park, maryland. >> look at my bride. i can't be nothing else but happy. >> reporter: how are you feeling? >> this has been so much fun. >> reporter: this fun-filled

ceremony in the furniture-filled store featured rose petal-covered floors, a cake, red and white chairs for family and friends to witness the first of its kind wedding. >> as long as we both shall live. >> reporter: these love birds attended the same high school in washington, d.c. >> graduated and didn't see each other again for 30 years. >> reporter: until they met up again two years ago today in ikea's restaurant. love was in the air. >> we ended up having dinner here. >> reporter: it was on meatball tuesdays. they geazed at each other's eyes over meatballs. >> all we wanted was a quiet ceremony in the corner with a couple of plates of meatballs. >> the guests ate meatballs and had a ball in the cafeteria. ikea calls itself the life improvement store. it hopes it improves the lives of these newlyweds. >> where will you have the honeymoon? the furnishing department? >> well, actually, we do plan to go to new york and visit the brooklyn store.

chilly by tomorrow morning. 56 in college park, maryland, rockville, maryland, now at 56 degrees and andrews air force base at 59 degrees right now. and sun's up tomorrow at 6:28, dropping to 46 in frederick, 52 degrees in fredericksburg, virginia. oh, you're going to need a jacket. and rain develops too. we're probably going to start to see more drops. i think after the sun comes up, 8:00, 9:00 or so. right now, radar, storm 4 radar. you can see where the rain activity is, light showers there. but the bulk of the rain is going to come tomorrow afternoon. and it's going to be pooling right along this front and moving eastward through the area. here's the way it goes, folks. let me take you through it with our future weather. early tomorrow morning, again, rain moves in by tomorrow afternoon, more showers overspread the area. it's going to be mainly light showers. we're going to see the whole system start to push its way eastward with a lot of rain

moving northward right up along the mountains. and i think that early thursday, we still could see a few lingering showers around the area. for tomorrow morning, we're mostly cloudy, chilly, you'll need your jacket, you'll need your umbrella heading out the door. 46 to 52 degrees, light wind at least starting out and throughout the day tomorrow. highs, upper 50s to low 60s. again, big change from that 90-degree warmth that we had at the beginning of the week. we're back to 70 degrees on thursday. friday right now, 76, then for the weekend, something that we haven't seen since the end of february. and that will be the possibility of some thunderstorms and more importantly more than 1/2 inch of rain. yeah, it's been that long since we've seen that around here. so right now we've got 1/10 inch, maybe a quarter coming tomorrow and maybe over an inch for the weekend. >> we could sure use it. >> yeah. coming up next in sports, we've got breaking news about

a nasa satellite captured some incredible video of this so-called solar prominence.

it happens when plasma on the sun's surface becomes unstable and bursts. nasa says such eruptions are often associated with solar flares. it did not happen on the side of the sun that faces the earth, so it won't cause any radiation storms that could interfere with satellite, radio signals, ipads and all. in case you're wondering, nasa has two spacecrafts that can see the surface of the sun that's turned away from the earth and the entire globe has been visible for more than a year. >> and i was wondering that at 6:00, and nasa answered
