11:49 am
warning signs can be picked up in kids as young as six months old. >> what would that be? >> at six months old, you should be able to get eye contact with your child, maybe do peek-a-boo and have the child respond to your smiles and seem to be interested in you. kids who go on to have an autistic disorder don't do that. other things, kids up to the age of one, if they're not babbling or pointing for things, that can be an indicator that they may go on to develop this disorder. certainly kids should be using one word spontaneously by the age of 16 months. kids should also respond to their name by about ten months of age. so if you call the child's name and they don't look to you, that's a problem. also if you point to something and your child doesn't follow your eyes, and follow your finger to point to something, all of these things need to be taken seriously as potential warning signs that your child may be developing an autistic spectrum disorder. >> a lot of people just think that speech is the one thing that they are looking for.
11:50 am
do autistic children lack the ability to speak? >> well kids who have autism lack -- they have language delays. so some of them will actually go on their whole lives and never be able to speak. some will be able to speak, but they have a great delay. kids with asperger's, which is thought of as a more mild form of autism. those kids have normal language development. but at some ages they may show some of these signs. >> what should a parent do if their 6-month-old is not relating to them, following their finger, playing peek-a-boo? >> they should see their pediatrician, particularly if their child is a boy. autistic spectrum disorders are five times more common in boys. so be aware. take it more seriously if you have a son. the other is don't allow your pediatrician to take watch-and-see approach. say, look, this is something i'm very concerned about. what should the next steps be. i think you need to be especially if you have had family member with the history of an autistic spectrum

disorder. you want to jump on these things early. get a referral to a facility that specializes in early diagnosis of autism. >> there has been some controversy surrounding the proposed changes in criteria for diagnosing autism. what do you think about that? >> it remains to see what the final criteria would be. what's in the plans is that they may make the criteria more strict so that some of those kids who are currently described as having an autistic spectrum disorder will soon no longer meet criteria and that has some serious implications for a lot of people and families. in that if they don't have that disorder, they won't get funding within the school for the services they currently may be receiving. >> dr. winert, thank you so much. i want to remind people, that next wednesday dr. winert is going to be answering your questions, he is a psychiatrist and can answer a lot of different questions, a wide range from treating depression to parenting advice and help with a troubled relationship. so if you have a question, email us at news4midday@nbcuni.com.
