we won. >> the mystery is over. the final megamillions winners have claimed their prize today. they are the only ones who did it publicly. good afternoon. on a busy day in the news i'm jim handly. >> i'm angie goff in for pat lawson muse. >> we begin today with breaking news in the entertainment world. legendary television and radio personality dick clark has died. >> clark is the famous producer and host of dick clark's american band stand and the game show pyramid. clark is also the founder and chief executive of dick clark productions, which produces the american music awards and golden globes. tmz is reporting that clark died this morning from a heart attack. dick clark was 82 years old. turning to our weather, we finally saw some rain today, but was itnything substantial? >> meteorologist veronica johnson is in storm center 4 and we're talking about the big "r" word aren't we? relief. finally. >> right. relief from the pollen.

right? and because our water table, our ground water tables need that rainfall our streams and rivers were starting to get a little low around the area so, yes. we did get, you know, enough around here, anywhere between 0.1 and 0.25 inch. we'll talk about the next big storm coming up. this is an nbc news special report. here is brian williams. >> good afternoon from new york. we're coming on the air to let you know a true american original has left us. dick clark has died at the age of 82. he first burst on the scene for most of us as the host of the saturday afternoon staple "american band stand" and that's how we first saw so many musical groups of the era. from then dick clark went on to host just about everything, became a super successful host of a megaproduction company, and always hosted new year's eve from times square. we saw him as recently as this past new year's eve, still

struggling to communicate after his last stroke, but he was there and in the game, nonetheless. the man who for so many years was called the world's oldest teenager, dick clark, dead at 82. we'll have more on him tonight on "nightly news." i'm brian williams in new york. back on news 4 at 4:00 this afternoon we will have much more on the death of dick clark throughout the evening and more reaction as well. >> in other news, it was a captivating sight in the skies yesterday. the space shuttle "discovery" coming to the smithsonian continues today. workers continued initial preparations to move the shuttle into the museum yesterday loosening the prongs that connected the shuttle with the 747 plane. tonight at 8:00 crews will get back to work and news 4's erika gonzalez will have a live report as "discovery" heads into its final resting place, coming up at 5:00. and the lucky winners, a retired couple living in southern illinois. we're talking about the lottery.

>> they will get their share of the record $656 million jackpot drawn nearly three weeks ago. we finally got to see a face, what a winner looks like. they were introduced at the ceremony in the tiny farming town of red bud where they bought the ticket. >> jay gray reports on what they plan to do with all that cash. >> reporter: the $218 million question has been answered in illinois. merrell butler says he found out he was a megamillionaire watching the evening news the night of the drawing. >> it was 2, 4, and the further i went the more they matched. >> reporter: a perfect match. >> after i looked at it for a couple minutes, i turned to my wife, who was right there with me, and i says, we won. and she kind of looked at me funny. i said, no, we won. and then she started giggling. and she giggled for about four hours, i think.

>> reporter: three weeks later the retired computer analysts are still laughing. it seems with the lawyers, the financial advisers, and planning, winning the lotto has become a full-time job. >> no, i'm not looking for sympathy. i'm just saying that it's a bit of work to set this all up. >> reporter: the butlers say they may take a vacation at some point but other than that there are no lavish plans. the life-time residents of tiny red bud, illinois, where the ticket was purchased, say they don't plan to take their new found fortune anywhere else. >> we're staying here and it's not a matter of -- we know everybody in red bud just about. i grew up here. so it's 3700 and it's nice, comfortable fa, family oriented community. >> reporter: with a brand new millionaire. jay gray, news 4. >> that's what a winner looks like. the winners in maryland and kansas claimed their prizes anonymously as allowed by law. now to a horrific story out

of texas today. a 30-year-old woman is behind bars accused of gunning dune young mother then snatching her newborn baby from her arms and running off as the mother lay dying. verna mcclain was arrested in her harris county home and charged with capital murder. witnesses say she shot cala golden several times outside a pediatrician's office before driving off with the victim's 3-day-old son. he had just left a routine checkup with his mom when the shooting occurred. after golden was shot she reportedly screamed "my baby, my baby." police just wrapped up a news conference and speculated on a motive. >> our information is she did have a miscarriage. she needed to justify having a child to her soon-to-be fiance.

>> there are reports the suspect was a nurse. police believe mcclain acted alone. she dropped off baby keegan at her sister's home where he was later found unharmed. defense secretary leon panetta is strongly condemning photographs that have just come to light. they show u.s. soldiers in afghanistan posing with body parts of dead insurgents. this time the 82nd airborne is involved. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: the 18 photos are so graphic we're showing just one, cropped. the remains of a suspected suicide bomber and u.s. troops closing in 2010. the los angeles times says it got the images from a soldier and published just a few, refusing a request by defense secretary panetta not to print any. >> this is war. i know that war is ugly and it's violent. and i know that young people sometimes caught up in the moment make some very foolish

decisions. >> reporter: panetta apologized, promised an investigation. but nato secretary general said he is sure the violations were not typical. in 2010 or today. >> i consider them an isolated event, so, obviously, i hope that there would be no spillover. >> reporter: spillover. officials worry western troops could face reprisal attacks. six americans died after u.s. troops mistakenly burned korans in february. a u.s. soldier allegedly murdered 17 afghans in march. in january a video surfaced of u.s. troops urinating on afghan dead. u.s. secretary of state clinton said the real afghan story was last weekend. local troops trained by the u.s. and nato beating back taliban attacks. >> the transition is ontrack. the afghans are increasingly standing up for their own

security and future. >> reporter: and all u.s. combat forces are still said to be out of afghanistan in 2014. tonight with the 2010 photos out, u.s. commanders say they're ordering special precautions to try to protect american forces from any back lash. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. according to "the los angeles times" the soldier who leaked the photos served with the 82nd airborne in afghanistan. he told "the times" he released the photos because he believed they indicate a breakdown in leadership and discipline that threatens the safety of u.s. troops. the judge assigned to the george zimmerman case in florida may step down before the end of the week. zimmerman's attorney asked judge jessica recommendationsideler to recuse herself because of a possible conflict of interest. her husband works with an attorney providing legal analysis for a cable news network. there is also word she may step aside today or tomorrow before zimmerman's arraignment. that happens on friday. zimmerman faces second-degree murder charges in the death of

unarmed florida teen trayvon martin. new details have emerged about the secret service scandal. several agents and military personnel are accused of hiring prostitutes in colombia. as nbc's mark potter reports, it was a fight over money that first triggered the investigation. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell nbc news this strip club known as the play club located in an industrial section of cartehena is where members of president's advanced security detail went last week and hired prostitutes. residents say at night it's crowded with international tourists. a u.s. source says 11 u.s. secret service agents took prostitutes from the play club to the hotel where they were staying. the source also told nbc news national investigative correspondent michael isikoff that one of the prostitutes was shared by two agents who afterward got in a heated dispute with her over the fee she demanded, less than $60. >> she wanted to be paid for

both of the agents. they wanted to split her price. she complained to the local police. the local police went up to the agents' room, banged on the door, and when they weren't satisfied, called the u.s. embassy. >> reporter: residents say the legal sex trade there is a booming business, with women and customers out on the streets long into the night. meantime, on tuesday the scandal widened to include ten american servicemen now under investigation. u.s. military officials tell nbc news they include five from the army, two from the navy, two marines, and one from the air force, all of them connected to the secret service advance team. >> residents here say prostitution is widespread and that americans are frequently seen here traveling to this area specifically for sex, drugs, and alcohol. mark potter, nbc news in colombia. back to you. an independent government investigator is now in colombia to interview women who can

tom petty and the heart breakers. their stolen guitars have been recovered. >> that's right. five guitars were stolen late last week from a sound stage in southern california, where the band was rehearsing for their new tour. two of the vintage guitars belonged to petty and tmz reports he scrambled to replace them, dropping some big bucks on nearly identical replicas. but now he doesn't need them. the police arrested a security guard at the sound stage after he pawned one of the guitars. all of the instruments have been recovered. ♪ a little proud mary making us proud, d.c., erin will et from gaithersburg, maryland singing for her life on "the voice" last night and her performance paid off. coach blake shelton decided to save her over the other singer. erin will now move forward as

again is moving through our area, a slow moving system and another slow moving system for the weekend. we're at 54 degrees right now. as far as the evening goes, temperatures will be holding steady, dropping very slowly. 53 degrees by 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. sun sets at 11:49 so that rain doesn't shut off until 3:00 or 5:00 a.m. in the morning. it is low pressure along the stalled out front. that front right through north carolina. by tomorrow morning, that area of low pressure makes its way to southeastern virginia and here we are at 1:00 a.m. so around 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. the rain moves out and by 9:00 a.m. it's sunshine in here. so skies are going to quickly clear the area tomorrow. easily said. mild conditions for friday. we'll go from 70 for a high tomorrow and then about 75 for a high temperature on friday. as far as the evening goes, it's going to be cool. you'll notice some fog forming. patchy fog. temperatures in the 50s.

spinning a new record or ringing in the new year, america's oldest teenager was a beloved figure of music in television. in fact, dick clark was just a teen when he began his long career, first in radio, then tv. in 1956, clark hosted a variety show called "band stand" where young people would dance along with rock 'n roll records. when the show went national, clark changed the name to "american band stand" and broke new ground by introducing not only white artists but african-american musicians as well. soon teenagers all over the country were listening to the latest music while practicing new dance moves like the stroll and the twist. >> once again with a song called "lonely boy" here is paul anka. >> reporter: clark was known for his youthful looks and also his business savvy kept him on the

air for six decades. >> everything in my professional life i owe to that show. >> reporter: for many years he also presided over the festivities in times square for his annual rockin' new year's eve broadcast until a severe stroke sidelined him in 2004. >> it's going great as usual. >> reporter: he returned to the broadcast as the nation welcomed him in 2006, re-establishing his credentials as an american icon. bruce hall, nbc news. >> what a legacy. you know, it's nice to see all that footage because it is all documented on video from all his shows in black and white and color and through the years. he never seemed to age. >> no he didn't until of course he had a stroke and then he made a few appearances after that but he surely will be missed. >> sure will. a picture has been worth far more than a thousand words for prince william's sister-in-law, pippa middleton. >> now that photo of her making global headlines is worth a big apology from one of her friends. "the sun" published this photo

over the weekend next to a friend who pointed a fake gun at the papparazzi in paris. today french fashion designer arthur de soltray who was also in the car at the time apologized and defended middleton and says pippa had no idea their friend was going to use the fake gun as a joke and that pippa did not find it funny. an airline traveler in portland, oregon took off a lot more than his shoes while going through airport security. john brennan stripped naked in protest. it happened last night at portland international airport. brennan is 49 years old and he said he took off his clothes to protest tsa screeners who he claims were harassing him. when he refused numerous requests to put his clothes back on he was hauled off to jail. >> i heard nothing so this was my next action. i know that nude but not lewd in oregon is a protected speech and

so i chose that option. >> despite that brennan was charged with disorderly conduct and indecent exposure and, yes, he missed his flight to san jose. tsa released a statement saying when a passenger chooses to be disruptive, police will be notified. >> don't want to sit next to that on a plane. forget drive through. one fast food chain is going to start driving to you instead. today burger king deployed food trucks that will be out in 40 cities. though it is not entirely clear which cities will see the trucks, cnbc found one in l.a. today handing out free samples. the formal rollout of the trucks will begin on monday. the goal is to get people to sample the new menu items and win customers back. burger king lost its number two status last year to wendy's. a north carolina teenager is now a youtube sensation. listen to him speak and you'll understand why.

a florida woman is charged with careless driving after her car slammed into a grocery store. take a good look at this. the video seen here was captured by surveillance cameras. police tell us the 76-year-old was pulling up to a stop sign when her car accelerated, crashed through the store's front doors. ten people were injured in the accident. no one was killed. a baby who was hit is expected to be okay. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. a woman drove her car off a bridge, fell 200 feet, and survived in austria. police say the 41-year-old woman was driving dangerously close to the side rail when she veered off the bridge yesterday. she reportedly had a blood alcohol level of about 1.6. police say it was a miracle she survived. they say after her car hit the ground she managed to climb out and get help. she was taken to the hospital with some bruises and broken bones. no word on any charges she may

face. a professor in the netherlands has just published the first dutch insect cook book. the book contains an assortment of recipes intended to promote insects as a source of protein. not surprisingly, the author is a professor of entomology. he says insects provide a good alternative protein source that can meet the needs of a rising population in a shrinking world. to mark the book launch, dutch students tried to seat record for making the world's largest grasshopper pie. they're into cupcakes there, too. ooh, those look like worms. >> they do. even stink bugs i hear are good. stink bug tacos. >> no, no. >> stink bug pate. >> there goes dinner. if that thing starts moving around i'm moving out. up next a dangerous game that could have deadly consequences. >>
