new virginia home. on exhibit soon for all to see. good afternoon. i'm jim handly. >> i'm barbara harrison in for pat lawson muse. two days ago we marvelled as discovery arrived at dulles airport on the back of a jumbo jet. today another tremendous sight. >> "discovery" and its sister shuttle "the enterprise" sitting nose to nose on the tarmac part of the four-day celebration to welcome "discovery" to the smithsonian museum there. as megan mcgrath reports now, because "enterprise" has to move out to make room for discovery it's also made for an emotional farewell. >> the shuttle enterprise all shiny and pristine was towed out of the museum early this morning. a piece of the hangar wall had to be removed to make room for its tail. enterprise has been on display at the center for nine years so it's with sadness the museum staff said a final good-bye.

>> i came down about 10:00 and spent 15 minutes with "enterprise" saying good-bye. we've had a wonderful time being the care taker and steward of this orbiter and it will be sad to see her go. >> reporter: enterprise was a prototype and never flew into space and is headed to a museum in new york. discovery flew 39 missions and is considered the work horse of the shuttle fleet. >> it's really once in a lifetime. the fact i'm standing here and it is kind of surrealistic i'm looking at it. >> reporter: michael worked with the shuttle program and came up from houston for this. >> it's been part of my life. i've wanted to be an astronaut since i was a kid and so my entire adult life the space shuttle has been the space program. seeing the first one here at the smithsonian is kind of like the end of this chapter of my life and now looking forward to what comes next. >> the experience did not disappoint. discovery flanked by its former commanders and astronauts was towed on to the museum grounds

i'll give you the rest of the details coming up. as far as today goes we started out with clouds and fog early part of the day and have been seeing clearing, sunshine, a big area from central pennsylvania right on down to central virginia. but look at areas west around minneapolis, around chicago, it is stormy there and it is there over the central part of the country that at least one part of our upcoming storm system is organizing. more on that coming up later. but oh, what a fantastic day it's been. 72 degrees the current temperature. north wind, light breeze out there out of the north. that dry breeze for us. we've got laytonsville and wheaton at 68 degrees. glendale and green belt in prince george's county at 69. fairfax city and vienna coming in currently at 67 degrees. so a very nice evening it will be as temperatures drop to 66 by 7:00. again, a clear sky for us. it's going to be a very starry night. we'll drop to 54 by 9:00. 62 degrees or actually that should be 52 degrees by 11:00

changed the face of entertainment. stephanie stanton, nbc news, lang. we're following developments out of the gulf of mexico where a small plane went down this afternoon. the pilot is now missing. fighter jets started tracking the plane after it took off from slidell, louisiana this morning. they failed to get any response from the cessna. it crashed shortly after noon 120 miles west of tampa. aviation officials say the pilot was the only one onboard. there is no sign of him at this hour. three secret service agents have already lost their jobs in the fallout from the scandal that began unfolding ahead of the president's trip to columbia last week. nbc news has learned that more resignations are expected in the near future. mark potter has the latest now. >> reporter: as investigators continue to sort out the varying accounts of what happened here, at least two versions are surfacing publicly about an argument that occurred at this

hotel which caused the scandal to blow up. the "new york times" reports that an unidentified woman who says she will not be talking to authorities claims she was with a man she later learned was an agent and that they argued vehemently over $800 escort fees later whittled down to $225. but in a second version a u.s. official tells nbc news the argument was between a prostitute and two agents she was with that night. she wanted a double fee somewhere in the area of $60. two wildly different accounts. investigators are here for both the secret service and the u.s. military trying to determine exactly what did happen and who was involved. mark potter, nbc news, colombia. back to you. >> and the woman who spoke to the "new york times" said the men never mentioned they were in colombia to protect the president. she described them as very discreet. a new judge has now taken over the case against george zimmerman. the florida man accused in the shooting death of unarmed teen trayvon martin judge kenneth lester was appointed to the case

yesterday. the previous judge stepped down because of a potential conflict of interest. her husband works with an attorney who is providing tv commentary about the case. the new judge will preside over zimmerman's bond hearing. it's set for tomorrow morning. new polls out today show the race for the white house is very close between president obama and the presumptive nominee mitt romney. the economy continues to dominate voters' concerns. today congress got involved. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: in the battleground state of ohio, mitt romney went to a closed factory to blame the president. >> needs to sit down with folks and understand how difficult these years have been and take responsibility. >> reporter: just yesterday president obama campaigned in ohio and michigan, touting his economic record. >> i place my bets on american workers. today gm is back on top. 200,000 new jobs over the last

welcome back. at 4:30 i'm jim handly. >> i'm barbara harrison in for pat lawson muse. right now the retired space shuttle "discovery" is being rolled into the smithsonian's hangar near dulles, airport where it will be on public display starting tomorrow morning. it is replacing the shuttle "enterprise" which sat in the annex for nine years. we'll have a live report coming up. more secret service agents' careers are on the line in the fallout over the prostitution scandal. the controversy erupted last week when agency employees allegedly brought hookers back to their hotel in colombia while setting up security for president obama's visit. three people involved have already lost their jobs so far and a top lawmaker says more firings are imminent either today or tomorrow. >> people around the world and

across the entertainment industry are remembering dick clark. clark is credited with bringing rock 'n roll to the main stream and launching hundreds of careers through his show american band stand. clark died yesterday of a heart attack. he was 82. >> when george zimmerman appears at his bond hearing tomorrow in florida he'll face a new judge. judge kenneth lester was assigned to the case after the previous judge stepped down because of possible conflict of interest. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the death of unarmed teenager trayvon martin. more disturbing details are emerging today in the case of a texas woman who killed a mother and kidnapped her baby. verna mcclain appeared in court today. >> authorities say she may have committed the crime to hide a miscarriage from her fiance. >> reporter: in court thursday, verna mcclain charged with murdering the mother of a newborn so she could claim the babeas her own.

>> you understand you have been clarnlgd with the offense of capital murder. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: mcclain is accused of waiting outside a pediatrician's office in a suburb of houston tuesday waiting for young mother kala golden and her new baby boy keegan to emerge. >> the suspect shot kala several times then took the child from the pickup, put him in her car knocking kala to the ground as she left the scene. >> reporter: police say kala golden was randomly selected, that mcclain had had a miscarriage recently but never told her fiance. >> she told him she was pregnant and had given birth to a child. >> reporter: baby keegan was to be that child. authorities found him unharmed at mcclain's sister's house a few hours after the shooting. he has since been reunited with family including his father who is devastated by the loss of his wife. >> i love you. i wish you were here to help me through this. >> reporter: after her court appearance the district attorney already called it a death penalty case.

the website reports that someone involved with casting the commercial says the skin tone restriction was in their words because lighting and special effects would get tricky. in the meantime the grio has published a statement from acura which reads in part we apologize to anyone offended by the language on the casting sheet. the statement also says we are taking appropriate measures to ensure such language is not used again in association with any work performed on behalf of our brand. a mcdonald's employee was arrested in south carolina accused of spitting in customers' drinks. police say 19-year-old marvin washington was working at the drive through this weekend when a mother and daughter ordered two sweet teas but once the women got their drinks they realized it was unsweetened. police say the customers then went through the drive through again and got two new teas but those were also unsweetened. so the mother and daughter went home deciding to add their own sweetener. that is when they found the

brewing in hartford county, maryland. >> it is a situation that's ruffling a lot of feathers and forcing city leaders now to review laws regarding the type of pets home owners can have. jane miller has our story. >> reporter: those aren't grasses on the other side of the fence blowing in the breeze. they're peacock feathers. need a better look? wait till dusk when the peacock ascends to the roof and fans them out. and then comes this. [ peacock calling ] >> what i really want to talk to you about is the peacock on your roof. >> petey? >> reporter: lisa mcnair and her family own petey a male peacock and other peacocks. they are a permanent fixture in the bynum overland community of abingdon. this is a pretty compact residential neighborhood. >> the county law says i can put anything in my law i want but a chicken. >> reporter: some neighbors as you might imagine aren't too pleased mostly because petey is noisy. i mean that is really loud. >> it is and it's only during the breeding season. >> they squawk all night long.

>> reporter: one neighbor who chose not to be identified said sleeping is the issue. >> at first it was pretty. it was really unique and i took pictures. but i get up at 5:00 a.m. so it's not pretty anymore. when evening comes he starts calling to let everybody know that this is his territory. >> reporter: does he think there are owe peacocks in the neighborhood that he has to worry about? >> there are other animals in the neighborhood. >> reporter: hartford county inspectors have responded to complaints about the peacocks, limited by county law for private property. hard to tell with the peacock -- we counted eight birds all together but any under six months old aren't affected by the limit. he is going to try it again, phil. go block him off. i don't want him out of this yard. >> reporter: there he goes. last evening we watched as the mcnairs tried to keep petey at home. not an easy task. how do you keep a peacock on your roof and not everybody

else's? >> that's why the kids are chasing him. >> reporter: the county prevents the mcnairs from caging the peacocks because the houses in the neighborhood are so close. >> if people would stay out of my business my birds would be penned but zoning said come and release the birds. >> reporter: the county considers the peacocks domestic animals albeit noisy ones. >> reporter: so is your plan to keep them here? >> yeah. they're my pets. >> try putting a leash on one. on tuesday hartford county officials considered a plan that would increase the number of animals property owners can have and, yes, that would include peacocks. they decided to table the bill. i guess they were chicken, huh? >> i think five is enough. >> yeah. i'd say so. they're big and they are noisy. >> certainly noisy. coming up on news 4 we'll explain how a chihuahua ended up nursing kittens. >> and the would-be burglar who just couldn't figure

a burglar tried to break into a pharmacy in texas but he had trouble getting past the front door. security cameras were rolling as the man picked up a rock and tried to throw it through the front door. didn't work though. and the would-be burglar got frustrated and gave up. police are trying to figure out if he is responsible for other recent pharmacy break-ins in that area. an abandoned chihuahua and two abandoned kittens were put

together at an animal shelter in fort lauderdale, florida. >> then something unusual happened to something very special. >> hey. >> the dog named marcy began nursing the kittens. here is the story. someone dropped off the newborn kitties at the shelter a couple weeks ago. the next day animal control called and said that they had a lactating dog with no puppies so they decided to put the animals together. marcy has been nursing the kittens ever since. >> they're doing very well. and i can't believe our luck that we actually had a lactating dog that could feed the kittens. it's wonderful. >> i think the mother instinct just takes over and she's got babies and her heart's full and her life is full. >> we're told the dog and cats are doing so well healthwise they will likely be available for adoption soon. >> all right. too cute there. >> they're a team now. >> yeah. next, the unexpected phone

>> reporter: 79-year-old bobby berlin might want to play the lottery because her luck seems too good to be true. on monday night berlin was at home sleeping with no idea she was slipping dangerously into diabetic shock. at the same time, pollsters from marist college in poughkeepsie were conducting a public opinion poll about mayor bloomberg. the computer program used in polling makes up random phone numbers using new york city area codes. out of millions of possibilities, berlin's phone rang. >> hi. my name is jason. i'm calling from marist college. >> reporter: when berlin answered the college student on the other end of the phone sensed something wasn't right. >> something just sounded off. are you okay? >> reporter: another student might have hung up but this one called in his supervisor, danielle carter. >> hi. are you okay? >> no. >> do you need us to call
