a mother in maryland who some said would never leave her children vanished more than 20

years ago. >> tonight that woman has been found. 34-year-old christine jarrett vanished from her home in elk ridge, maryland in 1991. after a startling discovery howard county police now believe she's been there the whole time. jackie bensen has our report from elkridge. >> reporter: friend and neighbor cindy friar has always believed 34-year-old christine jarrett would have never willingly left her young sons. >> hopefully, her sons will know she didn't desert them. and that i think, you know, she loved them. >> reporter: and it now appears christine jarrett never did leave the tidy home on claire drive in elkridge that she shared with her husband and two little boys. last night, acting on unspecified new information, howard county police found what they believe to be her remains, encased in concrete, under the floorboards of a shed in the home's back yard. they arrested her husband, 57-year-old robert jarrett, who had been living in the home with his second wife until they separated recently.

on january 5th, 1991, when he reported christine missing, he told police she'd walked away from the home after an argument and never returned, something neighbors found difficult to believe. >> it was just a feeling that something was wrong. it didn't work out. you know, she would have never left those boys. never. >> after all these years, my heavens. >> reporter: as to why it took so long to find christine jarrett, there is some question as to whether her husband did not allow officers access to this property back in 1991. reporting from elkridge, maryland, jackie bensen, news 4. metro officials inspected defibrillators at all of its stations today. they did that after a passenger di died. a 51-year-old man suffered a heart attack on a train at the pentagon station. it happened on monday. metro officials say the defibrillator at the manager's kiosk station was used but it

did not have a full charge. the man who skufrd the attack later died at the hospital. the transit agency now is upgrading its defibrillators. >> we have been in the process of replating these older model a.e.d.s with newer generation state-of-the-art a.e.d.s not only to replace what's out there now but also to put a.e.d.s at station entrance that's currently don't have them. >> he says by the end of the month every station entrance will have a defibrillator. the agency is also requiring station managers to inspect those units several times a day. the bowie state university student who's accused of killing her roommate is free on bond tonight. 19-year-old alexa simpson is accused of stabbing dominique frazier in their dorm room last september. she was released on $250,000 bond last week. the two were allegedly arguing over loud music. her attorney says her release signals support of frazier's claim that the killing was in self-defense. as part of simpson's bond she is confined to her mother's

district heights home and she's not allowed any visitors. her trial is scheduled to begin in august. a hyattsville man faces attempted child sex abuse charges tonight after an incident at a d.c. daycare center. police arrested randolph king today. they say he worked at the zion baptist church of eastland gardens in northeast. according to a police report, a woman caught him standing over a 3-year-old boy in the church daycare. king was allegedly exposed, and the boy was reportedly sleeping face down on a cot. his pants had been pulled down. parents of kids who attend that daycare are outraged. >> what do you think about this guy coming in here and doing what he did allegedly? >> it's horrible. he needs to stay locked up. he needs to stay locked up. it's awful. >> reporter: that daycare is currently shut down, but police say it closed for unspecified code violations. the nurse in texas who's accused of killing a woman who steal her newborn child will undergo a mental review. her name is verna mclain.

she was in court for the first time in texas today. she's charged with shooting calla goldman in the parking lot of a pediatrician's office and then taking the woman's three-day-old son. the infant was later found safe, but his mother died at a hospital. mclain is facing the death penalty. investigators say she had suffered a miscarriage and reportedly was desperate to find a child. wildly different accounts are emerging now in the wake of the secret service prostitution scandal. "the new york times" spoke wan unidentified woman who says she and an agent argued at length that night about an $800 fee. but a u.s. official tells nbc news the dispute was actually between two agents and a prostitute, who wanted $60. the incident happened just prior to president obama's trip to colombia last weekend. three secret service members already have lost their jobs. president obama wants to keep his job, and right now he's

leading mitt romney in a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll out tonight. in a head-to-head match-up the president leads the presumptive republican nominee 49% to 43%. but it's not all good news for president obama. romney beat him by six points in the same poll when voters were asked who's more likely to have good ideas on improving our economy. 46% disapprove of how the president is handling the economy compared to 49% who approve. d.c. police want to hear from a man in this surveillance video. he is a person of interest in the recent break-in at the city auditor's office. over the weekend someone stole two laptop computers from that office. it's unclear what may be on the computers. the auditor's office worked for the d.c. council and examines government accounts and operations. it does not do criminal investigations. tonight the d.c. government websites are back up and running again after hackers disrupted service earlier today. softpedia reports that the hackers clogged the system with a flurry of requests so that the

system operates extremely slowly or it's impossible to load. those hackers are part of the same group that attacked new york city's website yesterday. the group says the attacks are an act of protest against the u.s. government. a metro rider decided he would not be a victim of crime. somebody tried to take his ipad the other day. the man chased after his would-be robber, ran after him on and off a train, and around the platforms. derrick ward is at national airport now with a video first seen here at channel 4. >> reporter: well, jim, you remember when the ipad first came out? people would go to extremes to get hold of them. well, it seems that's still the case here. we have a case here at this subway station last friday, the reagan national station, where they risked life and limb to hold on to an ipad. and that happened to a commuter named daniel wanger. as wanger's train neared national airport, someone in the seat behind him reached over and

snatched his ipad from his lap. it's happening less than it used to -- >> in part due to increased public awareness. >> reporter: but it still happens. and in no time the train pulled into the national airport station and the thief jumped off. the doors closing behind him. end of story, end of ipad, right? wrong. it was the beginning of a chase. >> the doors close on the metro train. the guy never left. he stayed right there in front of me but on the outside of the door. >> then the doors opened. you can see the suspect walking away with the ipad. at the bottom of the screen there in the jacket with the white stripe down the front. a few seconds later the victim's in hot pursuit, headed toward the bottom of the screen. he'd already broken his arm swinging at the door just as the doors partially closed again. video surveillance from the station caught most of the action. by now another commuter had joined in. they run onto the train, then off, then on again, then off again. it's tough to make out, but the action moves toward the top of the screen. finally, the most desperate

actions by the thief, he jumps down onto the track bed, crosses the rails, and then gets back up onto the platform on the other side, boarding a train opposite where the chase began. fortunately for him, he never touched that electrified rail. but that had turned out to be the extent of his luck. before the thief could board the other train, another commuter had grabbed the ipad from him and got it back to its rightful owner. the fleeing fleet-footed thief got as far as la enfant plaza station. turns out an off-duty d.c. police officer had seen some of the incident unfold. >> we were able to hold the trains and with the help of an off-duty metropolitan police officer we identified the suspect. he was taken into custody without incident. >> reporter: now, the suspect has been identified as 18-year-old kayvon stoddard of landover. he has been arrested and charged with grand larceny. as for mr. wenger, he says that it was adrenaline that made him run after the suspect like that. he doesn't think he'd do it again. and he wants to dispel notions that because he worked at the

pentagon people were saying, well, maybe he has some sensitive government information on there. he said no, it was sensitive personal information, equally as important to him. live at reagan national, derrick ward. back to you. human remains found two years apart in fairfax county belonged to a pair of brothers. the dna matches manuel mireiles garcia and jesus mireiles garcia. they were reported missing from prince william county two years ago. detectives say their bodies were found within a mile of each other. the first discovery was made in july of 2010, the other about a year later. nobody has been arrested. a man allegedly stole a police cruiser and led troopers on a wild chase through northern virginia today. a state trooper and arlington county officer stopped 37-year-old dexter gibson as he walked along interstate 66 this morning. police say gibson punched the officer and then stole his cruiser. the trooper chased him to centerville. investigators say that when gibson stopped he grabbed a shovel from a nearby truck and started swinging. he is in police custody tonight.

gibson faces several charges, including carjacking and assault on a police officer. the space shuttle "discovery" is now on display at the smithsonian institution. it was a ceremony today as nasa turned "discovery" over to the air and space museum. it took only minutes for crews to pull the spacecraft into its new hangar. the thing weighs 200,000 pounds. "discovery" replaces the shuttle "enterprise" which looks different because it's never been in space. astronauts and museum officials report, though, that "discovery's" appearance is because of its 39 missions. >> it was certainly a vessel that took care of us, got us up into a very difficult place to reach, and brought us back safely. >> it's a big deal. it's an important piece of history to see. >> the "discovery" display is open to visitors at 10:00 tomorrow morning. the "enterprise" will go to a

a cheese vendor in wisconsin is accused of scraping mold and fungus off wheels of cheese and then reselling it to customers. four people are accused today of ignoring food and drug administration orders. the company involved allegedly distributed more than 110,000 pounds of contaminated cheese. the cheese is from mexico, but it was distributed in you will i will, indiana, michigan, georgia, and texas. some of it contained salmonella, e. coli, and other potentially harmful bacteria. a federal prosecutor in chicago says that cheese was resold despite a recall back in 2007. starbucks is getting rid of a certain type of red dye used in some of its food and drinks. the dye is made from the juice of tiny beetles and is commonly used in products like cosmetics, yogurt, and shampoo. starbucks says it will reformulate its strawberry, raspberry, and red velvet flavored items.

the company says that process should be complete by the end of june. very lucky break for a man in belarus, and it was caught on camera. watch for the man in the orange vest up the road. he stumbled right into traffic recently. the mercedes missed the man's head by inches. the man gets back up and goes back to paint the fence along the road as if nothing had happened. police are investigating the incident. according to local media reports, a preliminary investigation found that the man was drunk. down in newport news, virginia police say that quick thinking by a bus driver helped save a teenager from an attack by a dog this morning. a 13-year-old boy was waiting for his bus when a pit bull charged and knocked him to the ground. the boy was able to kick the dog away, but it chased him down the street. police say the boy wan into an empty school bus outside a house. the bus driver saw what was going on from her porch. she instructed the boy on how to close the bus doors while she lured the dog away in her

direction. >> the dog was on his heels. the dog was right there on his heels. i was saying, come here, boy, come here. >> an officer shot and killed that dog. the owner of the dog said it had never been aggressive before. he apologized to the teenager's mother. that boy's being checked out now inasmuch as the dog had not been vaccinated. northern virginia commuters may be facing another fee. the virginia department of transportation wants to start charging ez pass users a dollar a month for their toll transponders. that's on top of planned toll increases. transportation officials say they need to make up for rising zrin administrative costs. other states including maryland already charge a mthly fee for the transponders. if the proposal goz througgoes through, v-dot hopes to start imposing the fee in july. >> more money. >> indeed. veroni veronica's got more details on

what's going on with our weather. kind of a mix but it ended up being pretty nice. >> it did. it's a little cool out there now. we've been talking a lot about the weekend weather. >> tacking about weekend weather. >> it's true. and that's because it looked like we were going to get a lot of rain this weekend. but throughout the day today it's been pretty consistent. some of the guidance that i've seen that we could salvage part of our sunday. and saturday is not going to be wet either throughout the entire day. let's first talk about what's going on here right now. we've got cool conditions throughout many neighborhoods. take a look at our storm 4 hometown weather. temperatures, hollywood, maryland, 52 degrees. andrews ars force base at 53 degrees. germantown, maryland, montgomery county, 50. one of our cool spots in fredricksburg, virginia. 57. just a little higher, the temperature. but by tomorrow morning look at that. seasonally cool through the area. sunrise at 6:24. we'll be in the 40s to about 50 degrees. and while the radar right now is not showing anything, look at this.

we've got two storms gathering here. one over the midwest, big storm just west of chicago. another one over oklahoma and northern sections of texas. both of these moving eastward. but one of them is going to stay far enough off the coast where i think that's what's going to give us a little bit of clearing skies for sunday and the promise of at least salvaging a good part of our weekend. sunshine for tomorrow. there's the weather front coming in. a southerly flow. we've got some thunderstorms to deal with on saturday. mainly after about 2:00 and 3:00. storms continue until about 7:00 p.m. so here it is, early in the morning. we get the showers. 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 or so. some thunderstorms coming through. and that's what's going to give us the heavy rain. some inch totals throughout the area. haven't seen that in a long time since the end of february. so why not get some good beneficial storms out of this for the weekend. a element bit of fog, cool, 47 to 55 degrees. by the afternoon, delightful. 73 to 76. sunshine throughout the area.

over the shoulder of tim thomas. capitals take a 2-1 lead. second goal of the playoffs. less than a minute later, boston with an opportunity. milan lucic at the bottom of your screen. holtby with the kick save. look at that, scorched through the legs. he gets to it just in time. 9 1/2 seconds to go, but the clock doesn't start right away. it was really weird. apparently the clock operator was trying to communicate with the refs to no avail. but it doesn't matter because braden holtby was there to get the final save right there. gloves it. 44 saves on the night. the capitals tie up the series at two games apiece. and this was a game they had to have. >> they came and fore-checked us hard. we turned the puck over a few times. and holts was very good. you know, he stood tall and kimd out a lot of rubber tonight. >> that goes to show how thick his skin is to be able to bounce back after four goals last game. and people are saying maybe the

floodgates are open. and obviously he did a good job. that's a very veteran-like response the way he played. >> all right. so game 5 in boston on saturday. that's 3:00 right here on nbc. and right now they're thinking that game 6 here in d.c. at verizon center going to be at 3:00 on nbc as well. back-to-back games. you've got to go to boston and then you have to come back. not much time in between games. >> that's kind of rough, man. >> that's the way they're going to do it in this series. they've been playing well. things have been going great for the nationals. they were due for a letdown. they have 162 games. tonight they had one. starting pitcher edwin jackson unable to duplicate his complete game. jackson only lasted five innings and got roughed up a bit. this was not a night that edwin jackson would care to remember. top of the first, already down 1-0. pitching to brian bogusevic. yeah-e laces one to right center. this one off the scoreboard. gets away from jayson werth. a run comes in, and here comes

the relay. we have a play at the plate. wilson ramos can't hold on to this one, though. and bogusevic ends um at third base. astros with three triples in the first inning. they take a 5-0 lead. bottom of the third. ryan zimmerman at the dish with two on. he doesn't have a home run all year. until now. big shot here. into the bullpen in left. and that's a three-run home run. the nationals right back in the game. they're down 5-4 now. fast-forward to the top of the sixth. it's a 7-4 game. bases pull for jose altuve. he uncorks on this one. that's not going to go out, but it's going to go pretty far. off the wall, two runs come in to score. astros put up 11 on the nationals' pitchers. 11-4 is the final. o's against the white sox in chicago this afternoon. top of the fifth, 3-2 orioles. adam jones facing gavin floyd with one on. and jones has been in the flow all season long. gets good wood on this one. his fifth home run of the year.
