good morning, and welcome to snoous midday, i'm barbara harrison, it's friday, april 20th, 2012. breaking news in prince george's county. police are at fairmont heights high school, investigating a stabbing involving a student. the school is in the 1400 block of nye street in capital heights. rescuers took one teen to the hospital. news4's megan mcgrath joins us live at the school now. megan, can you tell us what happened out there? >> reporter: well barbara, yes, there was some sort of a stabbing here this morning. students reported for class, i should mention that the students here at fairmont high have been held in their classrooms ever

since this happened. and we've actually seen several parents arrive here at the school to pick up their children. they heard what happened and they wanted to get their children to make sure they're safe. this happened as students were arriving here at school this morning. kids we spoke to say that there was some kind of back-and-forth on twitter yesterday, involving the girls involved with the stabbing. that there was some sort of trash talk that made tempers flare. it aapparently turned into the argument inside the school and things heated. when one of the girls stabbed the other in the chest. >> it was a regular day. people just walking, minding their business. and then arguing. and after arguing, people, gathering people and then everybody oh, and then everybody runs. everybody locked down in their classroom. whatever class you was in, they put you in a class and you can't leave. and you have to stay there until they say you could leave. >> reporter: school officials say the student who was

established has nonlife-threatening injuries. she was taken to the hospital. the other student involved has been taken into police custody. reporting live from fairmont heights high school, megan mcgrath. >> thank you, megan. right now, george zimmerman is in court, waiting to learn if he'll be released on bond. he's charged with second-degree murder. zimmerman admits he killed 17-year-old trayvon martin, but says the shooting was in self-defense. nbc's jay gray has been following developments in court and has more now from sanford, florida. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. it has already been an explosive morning in the george zimmerman bond hearing. george zimmerman himself, addressing the parents of trayvon martin from the stand, saying that he had no idea how old the young man was and that he was sorry for this loss. that comes after his parents testified in this case by phone. saying that they feared for their safety. but telling the court that they did not believe george zimmerman is a violent person. his wife also testifying in this

case. it has been a contentious bond hearing to this point. both prosecutors and the defense trying to drive home their points here. it continues, hanging in the balance, whether george zimmerman will walk out of the seminole county jail. that's the latest from florida, now back to you. a deadly crash is affecting traffic heading toward dulles airport right now. the accident happened just before 7:00 on the dulles access road near wolf trap. police say one person was killed in a single-car crash. two other people were taken to the hospital. their names and conditions are not being released at this time. the two westbound lanes are still closed. we have no word on when they will reopen. but let's check in now on the traffic with danella sealock to see what she knows about what's going on out there. >> good morning, barbara. that's true if you're trying to take the dulles access road, from the beltway, that's where the closure is. and you're not going to be able to continue as you make your way past the accident. which is in the wolf trap area.

however, you're traveling 267, regular mainline lanes westbound are open, same with eastbound, they're unaffected. but the access lanes is where there's the problem. 66 eastbound inside the beltway at glebe, no issues to report at either direction, your travel speed is a little under speed, 49 miles per hour as you head eastbound from the beltway to gw parkway, the trip taking 12 minutes at this time. i'm back with a look at the traffic in a little bit. back to you. >> turning to the weather now, sunny skies out there. beautiful morning here in the nation's capital. storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. >> it's a gorgeous morning. after a cold start, it was only near 40 degrees around dawn. we have warmed up, look at this sky, here's another view of the sky looking to the north, into montgomery county. and you can see just a few puffy clouds and a blue sky. absolutely gorgeous. now camera panning over toward loudoun county on the horizon. and now looking toward tyson's corner, you can see the high rises of tyson's corner on the

horizon there. and beautiful morning across fairfax county, that's american university in the foreground. and the sky watcher camera now looking toward rosalyn and arlington, some high rises in the foreground there along massachusetts avenue in northwest washington, a gorgeous day, temperatures just past 11:00 have reached the 60s, now 65 at reagan national. it's just beautiful. 60s just about everywhere. a little breeze off the bay, it's cooler, near 60 arps, down to pax river and along the bay, on the eastern side of the bay. a few clouds to the south and west and partly cloudy around most of the region now and later today, we'll have a partly cloudy to mostly sunny afternoon. light breezes, temperatures climbing to the mid 70s. overnight tonight, it looks like a beautiful evening. we'll talk about that and some big changes for the weekend. we'll talk about our chances for storms on saturday as well as some much cooler weather moving into the weekend. >> see you in here shortly.

metro is installing new defibrillators al at all of its stations. it comes as a device failed when a rider was having a heart attack. a 51-year-old man was on a train approaching the pentagon station on monday. metro said the battery on the defibrillator wasn't fully charged and didn't work properly. the man died later at the hospital. metro says it finished inspecting current defibrillators and is also upgrading the devices at every station kiosk. that process should be finished by the end of the month. the transit agency also will now require managers to inspect defibrillators several times a day. well expect some delays on the rails this weekend. three stations on the metro's busiest line will be closed. the tacoma, fort totten and brookland stations on the red line will be shut at 10:00 tonight. free shuttle buses will run between the silver spring and rhode island avenue stations to get you around the work being done. buses will replace trains between the ross lin and pentagon stations on the blue

line. on the orange line expect single tracking. all work should be done by monday morning. and starting tomorrow, it's going to cost you more to take a cab in d.c. fares are going from $1.50 per mile to $2.16 a mile. that's a 44% increase. the fare hike is intended to bring taxi cab revenues and average prices for riders to levels similar to those before may 2008. when the district moved from a zone-based fare system to a meter-based system. after nearly three months in the hospital, a prince george's county firefighter could finally be going home today. kevin o'toole was one of seven firefighters injured while battling a blaze at a vacant home in riverdale back in february. that fire was later ruled an arson. o'toole is suffering from second and third-degree burns to about half of his body. fellow firefighters from his station plan on being on hand for his release today. o'toole will leave the burn unit in the same ladder truck that he

rode in the night that he was injured. the bowie state university student who is accused of killing her roommate is free on bond now. 19-year-old alexis simpson is accuse of stabbing dominique frasier in their dorm room last september. she was released on $250,000 bond last week. the two were allegedly arguing over loud music. her lawyer says her release signals support of simpson's claim that the killing was in self-defense. as part of simpson's bond, she is confined to her mother's district heights home and not allowed to have visitors. her trial is scheduled to begin in august. it's eight minutes after 11:00. coming up, more people could be out of a job today in connection with the secret service sex scandal. plus, a local rapper shot and killed just two days after christmas, this morning, police are conducting a new search, and are not looking for the suspect now. we'll tell you what they are looking for. this crash. the military says bad weather likely played a role in a deadly u.s. helicopter crash in afghanistan. four american troops were killed when the army blackhawk went down in the helmand province, which is in southwest afghanistan. defense officials say the crew was responding to a suicide attack at a police checkpoint. the military has not ruled out the possibility that enemy fire also contributed to the crash. and we're learning more about one of the secret supervisors forced from their job in the wake of the agency prostitution scandal. his name is david chaney and he was assigned to protect sarah palin during the 2008 election. police kept reporters away from chaney's home yesterday and greg stokes is also out of a job. the attorney says neither man left involuntarily. lawmakers say more people connected to the scandal could step down or be let go today. meanwhile, the white house is standing by the director of the secret service, mark sullivan.

election day is less than seven months away now. and president obama holds a sizeable lead over mitt romney in the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. the president leads the presumptive gop nominee 49-43%. the news isn't all good for president obama, though. romney leads him by six points among voters who were asked which candidate was more likely to have good ideas on improving the economy. and president obama will welcome members of the wounded warriors project. soldier ride. at the white house today. the four-day annual cycling event began earlier this week with rides in ashburn and annapolis. the washington, d.c. soldier ride will take place tomorrow. one veteran of the ride says there is a lot of healing power in the camaraderie that comes from events like this. well, it flew 39 missions to space and today, space shuttle "discovery" begin as new mission -- greeting you as a museum visitor.

"discovery" officials opened to visitors about an hour ago. nasa turn over the shuttle to the udvar-hazy center in chantilly yesterday. it took just minutes for crews to pull the 200,000-pound aircraft into its new home. "discovery" replaces the pristine-looking shuttle, "enterprise," which never left earth's atmosphere. "enterprise" will head to the air and space museum at the "uss intrepid" in new york city next week. and tom joins us with a look at the forecast on a beautiful day. but he says some changes are coming. >> what a week we've had, monday afternoon we got to almost 90 degrees. and then this morning, it was only 40 degrees. we had a 50-degree range in temperatures throughout this week. and then we had the beautiful weather for the discovery arrival on tuesday, that chilly rain wednesday, then for the ceremonies yesterday. welcoming "discovery" to the uz uz cent udvar-hazy center. and then a chilly start this morning, there's the sunshine over the potomac, capitol hill,

reagan national just to the right down river is at 65. there's a light breeze coming in out of the south there. and around the hometown network, we have temperatures well into the 60s. right there in chantilly at the udvar-hazy center, it's 66 in chantilly. in fairfax county, gaithersburg, montgomery counties at 65. andrews air force base, prince george's county at 66 fredericksburg, spotsylvania county, up to 68. all of the areas in green are in the 60s, including west virginia, virginia, maryland, eastern shore. a beautiful spring morning under way. all around the region. there's the view from space. now we did have some stubborn fog that's been hanging in through virginia this morning. but a lot of that is breaking up now and we will have lots of sunshine there as well. but the fog is generally from nearby fredericksburg west towards the blue ridge, and it will be breaking up. farther west i'm watching a developing frontal system. this one will be moving in on saturday. it could intensify as it gets

closer to the atlantic seaboard. we could get some strong storms from this front on saturday afternoon. it looks like late afternoon, perhaps into early saturday evening is the timeframe for that. right now, and let's go forward over the next 48 hours. it will show you, we'll have lots of sunshine this afternoon. but then a few clouds developing overnight tonight. these little patches of green you see moving in from the west. that's along the front that's going to be moving in on saturday. and that front will be moving toward us by saturday afternoon and evening. this whole yellow zone is the zone of potential thunderstorms. some of these could produce damaging winds and hail late saturday afternoon into early saturday evening. then it breaks up as it moves off south and east. but an area of low pressure forming along the front will come up the atlantic seaboard and bring us some rain for sunday and much cooler weather. so up and down we go. sunny, mild afternoon, into the low to mid 70s this afternoon. with a southerly breeze, just a delightful spring day. then overnight tonight, if you're heading out this friday evening, sunset at 7:50. a beautiful evening, near 70

around sunset. near 60 by midnight. a light breeze, just a few clouds coming through. then by dawn tomorrow, the mid 50s. a little sun on saturday morning, then clouding up in the afternoon. we could get some of the strong storms late saturday afternoon and early evening. into the 70s before then. then the much cooler weather moves in on sunday, some chilly rain, some blustery winds, highs only low and mid 50s sunday into sunday night and monday. and scattered showers throughout the time. we could pick up a couple of inches of rain. then we dry out and as we get into tuesday, wednesday, thursday, still cool. a pattern showing only highs near 60 degrees. now earlier this week, i travelled to fairfax county's springfield estates elementary school in franconia. talked to the second graders there, in fairfax county, they've got a unit on weather for second graders. which is terrific. because they love weather and we love talking about all different types of weather. they really wanted to know about severe storms and we talked all about and snowstorms, too. i want to thank the teacher just to the left of me in back,

with arrival of spring and earth day tomorrow, it's a perfect time to get out your clippers and shovel and get your children to help you in the garden. gardening is a great way to teach kids the virtue of patience and the true meaning of the old adage, the fruits of one's labor. our garden expert, david martin joins us with some advice. welcome. >> good morning, thank you. >> happy earth day. >> happy earth day to you. >> a lot of folks are talking about getting outside and you want to tell us why it's a good idea to try to get your children out there as well. >> it's one of the things we talk about a lot. here's a periodical called "today's garden center." and are today's kids good for the garden center. and the statement i have is kids are good for the garden and the garden is good for the kids. >> but you mention that they're so busy with technology, they're not getting their hands dirty. >> kids aren't going outside as much as they used to. and the garden is a great way to do that.

and the first way to introduce kids to the garden is through foods and scents. this is a butter the popcorn plant. if you crunch the leaves and give a little sniff to, it smells just like movie popcorn. >> unbelievable. it smells exactly like popcorn. >> it's not edible, but it's great to have things in the garden that kids can relate to. another thing that we want to talk about a lot is that easy things to grow that are going to give you food. we're not talking about growing food because you're going to save money. we're talking about introducing kids to the idea that where food comes from. a great way to start with that is with a strawberry plant. strawberries are great because they actually produce fruit in the first year. if you look at this, this plant is in this little plastic pot. it already has strawberries on it. >> that's amazing, fairly easy to grow. >> very easy to grow and all kids love strawberries. this is a strawberry pot in front of you. if you see this in this nice green. if you look at this, it has lots of holes in the side,

strawberries like to run. you fill a little dirt and you put plants in through the holes and you put more dirt and by the time you're done you've got a nice pot here that's going to produce a lot of strawberries. i would say you'll probably get about four quartz of strawberries out of this pot. >> it's really neat. >> another thing to do is herbs, you have a mint, variegated mint and rosemary, chives, other things like that. you can introduce kids to the garden with herbs, you can taste them right off of the plant itself. just take a leaf and take a taste of it. >> and tomatoes. >> the better boy tomatoes, that's a tomato that's going to get large and it's really nice because it produce as lot of fruit. kids just love to see things grow. when you get the fruit and it starts to come on, it's great for them to be able to go out and pick things off of the tomato plant. >> i never had liked radishes until we grew them at my school in the first grade. i was so excited when they came

up, we loved to eat them. >> that's one of the great things about the garden, there's something that's immediate about it. then one of the things that's really great also is introducing kids to the idea that wildlife is really dependant on plants as well. i brought a few plants here that are great for bringing different creatures into the garden. this here is a heliotrope. it's a really neat plant. it's a beautiful purple flower and it smells just like baby powder. >> it does. >> this is a plant that butterflies love. you'll see butterflies all over this in your garden. this is a guarden meister fuchsia, it has this long, orange, tubular flower. you'll see lots of hummingbirds around. and it also grows well in the shade. along with this firecracker begonia. anything with the long tubular flower in the oranges and reds will be really attractive to the hummingbird. >> let's take a look at other things you say to get children involved. get them gloves.

right now, on "news4 midday," breaking news from the bond hearing of george zimmerman. a judge has set bail at $150,000 for george zimmerman, who is charged in trayvon martin's death. zimmerman cannot consume alcohol, he cannot be around guns, he'll have a curfew and must be in touch with authorities every three days. the judge says details need to be worked out between zimmerman's attorney and law enforcement over protection. zimmerman is not expected to be released today, however. prince george's county police say one teen is in the hospital and another in custody, after a stabbing. investigators say two teen girls got into a fight at fairmont heights high school in capital heights. and one stabbed the other. a student told news4 the fight stemmed from comments made on twitter. and this morning, montgomery county police are asking for your help in solving a deadly shooting before the case gross

cold. the victim was killed just after christmas. now police are back at the scene, conducting a new search. news4's tracee wilkins has more on the investigation from white oak. >> reporter: montgomery county police are looking for a witness who they believe can help them to solve a murder case. and today, they were back on the scene, searching for that witness. >> we're still trying to get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: just before 6:30 a.m., montgomery county police were back at the scene of a murder that happened this past december. >> it's not a cold case yet. but without the help with the community, of the community and unable to locate this witness, it could very easily develop into a cold case. >> reporter: 24-year-old franklin amobe was found shot to death here on the street in the 11,400 block of stewart lane in white oak. >> we believe he was shot across the street and then he ran across stewart lane and he fell at the bus stop. which is right here. >> reporter: it happened on december 27th, around 6:30 in the morning.

witnesses who have talked to police heard shots, but didn't look outside soon enough to see the shooter. but one of those witnesses told police he saw a woman who may have seen everything. >> once shots occurred, another witness approaches a, the front door of his apartment building and observed the witness had possibly saw the shooting, back up towards some dumpsteres. >> reporter: police say the woman, who is only described as an older hispanic female, then boarded the bus that left the scene before detectives arrived. now we're trying to find her. >> we would like to speak to her. if she speaks spanish, we have translators that could translate in spanish, to find out as much information as possible. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: the rapper, also known as frank diggy, was a local rapper with a strong following and serious potential in the music business. for some who knew him, seeing the police back in this neighborhood begging for help to find his killer, just reopened

old wounds and stirred up anger. >> anybody that knows him, and can come out and speak to him because he had a mother, he had sisters, he had a little brother. he had nieces. they need to say something. >> reporter: montgomery county police are now offering $10,000 for information that can help to lead to an arrest in this case. and they're also reminding the public that they need tips. they're saying that so far, they're not getting a lot of help from the public and they're going to need that help in order to solve this case. in white oak, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. today in new york city, police and fbi agents are tearing up the basement of a manhattan building, to find leads in a decades-old missing child case. etan patz disappeared in 1979, when he was only six old. the case started a campaign to find missing children and featured their pictures on milk cartons. detectives would not say what

led toem thhem to the site. law enforcement officials said an fbi dog recently detected the scent of human remains in the building. today is the 13th anniversary of the shooting massacre at columbine high school, two students shot and killed 12 students and one teacher before taking their lives on april 20th, 1999. investigators later discovered that the gunmen, eric harris and dylan klebold had been planning the attack for a year. the incident remains the deadliest shooting ever at an american high school. well it seemed like d.c. government websites were loading a bit slowly yesterday. and it wasn't a problem with your computer, if you had that problem. hackers apparently disrupted service, according to the website softpedia. the hackers clogged the system with so many requests, it operated extremely slowly or was impossible to load at all. the hackers are part of the same network that went after new york city's website on wednesday.

group says the attacks are an act of row protest against the u.s. government. take close look at this video, d.c. police are hoping it will help them find the person who stole two laptops from the city auditor's office. from the office on 14th street. police and city leaders aren't saying what was on those computers. the awed et ir's office works for the d.c. council and examines government accounts and operations, but it does not handle criminal investigations. and let's head out to the skies again and talk to tom kierein about this day and what we can expect from the weekend. tom? >> should put you in a festive mood this friday. gorgeous weather, looking toward the northeast into northeast washington, takoma park and the middle distance in the horizon is prince george's county, now camera looking into northwest washington, there's the national cathedral in the foreground. you can see the washington monument there behind that. to the right and there's the bend of the potomac river. now camera panning over toward

this laser of a shot by alex semin turned out to be the game winner as the caps tied up their series with the bruins, with a 2-1 win. marcus johansson got the scoring started early with a goal a minute into the game. but the big story is rookie goaltender, braden holtby. he stopped 44 shots on the night, just four shy of a caps' playoff record. >> just goes to show how good he is, how thick his skin is to be able to bounce back after four goals last game. and people saying that maybe, maybe the floodgates are open and obviously he did a good job and that's a very veteran-like i think response to the way he played. >> the caps will look to take a lead in the series on saturday in boston. the puck drops tomorrow at 3:00. and you can enjoy a hotdog with your real dog if you go to tomorrow's nationals game. that's because tomorrow is the first of four pups in the park games for this season. it's a chance for to you enjoy a

longer, they want to look vital. >> describe a traditional facelift for us. i assume that they're still doing the traditional facelift? >> very few. the traditional facelift was pull, pull, pull. pull it tight. modern facelifting is less about pulling, more about filling and pulling. it looks a lot more natural. because some of aging is gravity. but an equal amount is atrophy. so we need to fill and then we lift. it looks more natural, and it lasts longer. >> when you say fill, it's an interesting before and after. >> you see filling the cheeks and the chin, we're going to talk about chin implants, it's popular. it adds bone structure, it adds volume. >> you can't make this happen just by lifting? >> lifting won't do. and lifting looks done. this looks more natural. there's a good example. chin, cheeks, minimal lifting. >> and will the filling that you put in, last as long as the lifting will last? >> well these are implants, so they last forever.

but fat will last the longest, it's the gold standard. no, sometimes people need to come back in for maintenance filling. >> what kind of implants are we talking about? >> they're made of soft silicone rubber. >> and where do you put those? >> cheeks, chin. >> we want to talk about the chin implants, we just got -- word recently that that has become the fastest-growing plastic surgery trend a lot of people are getting the chin implants, who and why? >> well men particularly. men look better with stronger chins. i did one study, they checked all the ceos of the fortune 500 companies and 80% of them had strong you know, chins. so it's a sign of strength and masculinity for men. but for women, too, it gives a better neckline, a better bone structure. it lasts forever. it's reversible if you patients don't like it and it's easy to
