a vicious dog attack, snarling animals trap two teens

on the roof of a car. we'll hear from the man who risked his life to save them. a marine accused of stabbing another marine to death, reportedly hurling a homophobic slur before he did it. good evening, everyone. i'm chris gordon. we start with the weather. tonight's showers were just a taste of the big change coming tomorrow. meteorologist chuck bell is in the storm center. >> good evening, everybody. first round of rain showers with a few rumbles of thunder has moved through the area. the rain will be taper off over the next hour or so. but that's not the end of your rain problems because tomorrow, near washout conditions tomorrow afternoon. temperatures right now a far cry from where we were early. we're down to 58 degrees with a little light rain falling in around town and down south as well.

but there's a whole lot more moisture down to the deep south. it is coming our way. and monday morning, sunday night into monday morning, the possibility of some snowflakes flying in southern maryland and pennsylvania. we'll detail that coming up in the forecast. now to a vicious dog attack in northeast washington. caught on surveillance video, a warning, the video is pretty graphic. it shows two teenagers trying to get away from two dogs who just wouldn't let up last night. not even the top of a parked car was safe. it took several neighbors with weapons to fight the dogs off. news 4's darcy spencer talked to one of those men who was severely injured in the fight. >> all of a sudden, kids started running and jumping on cars. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows two dogs aggressively going after children who literally hop on cars to avoid being bitten. at one point, one of the dogs jumps on the roof of the car and the kid takes off.

do you believe the dogs were going to hurt these kids? >> yes, yes. >> reporter: but they didn't, because andre intervened and got attacked. both arms and hands bandaged because of serious bite wounds. >> i got stitches there. i've got three big holes with meat coming out. >> reporter: it happened friday night in the 1200 block of queen street. andre just returned home from his job when the commotion began, when we saw the dogs chasing the kids. >> i sacrificed myself. so automatically, i just ran out there. >> reporter: before we knew it, both describes he described as pit bulls were attacking him. >> when i fell, i fell down so both dogs were coming at me. i was trying to protect my face and my neck. >> reporter: he and his son were able to injure the dogs and they limped away leaving a trail of

blood. >> the owner should be more careful about letting the dogs out. >> reporter: he says there were about a dozen kids being menaced by the two dogs. do you regret doing this and getting hurt? >> no, not at all. no. i don't regret doing it. if i've got to do it again, i'll do it again. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. >> we are told police and animal control officers were out in the neighborhood today trying to find the owner of the dogs. andrew says he's now getting rabies shots and has a doctor's appointment to see if he hand has nerve damage. a u.s. marine is in custody accused of killing another marine. 20-year-old michael joseph poth has been charged with murder. police say he stabbed philip bushong after an altercation this morning. police are trying to determine whether a remark made during the

fight prompted the stabbing. >> one witness heard a homophobic slur used by the suspect during a verbal altercation which preceded the stabbing. >> bushong is from camp lejeune in north carolina. a car with a manual transmission foiled a carjacking early this morning. it started in columbia heights in the district and ended just over the maryland line in fairmont heights. police say a man and woman were thrown into the trunk of a car. but the kidnappers couldn't drive a stick shift. so they ordered the man to drive them around. eventually the driver jumped out of the car and ran for help. the suspects fled before police could get there. the woman eventually freed herself. both victims only suffered minor injuries. george zimmerman, the man charged with murdering trayvon martin is having problems posting bail. a florida judge set zimmerman's bail at $150,000 yesterday. but attorneys say zimmerman's family hasn't been able to come

up with the money to get him out. zimmerman is also worried for his safety once he is released. >> i think there's still a lot of emotions wrapped around the case. we're worried that some of those emotions are still negative and that may play out against george. >> o'mara says he hopes to have zimmerman out by the middle of the week. experts believe zimmerman needs to leave florida and avoid going out in public to stay safe. a three-month-old baby who went missing for several hours yesterday is back with her mother tonight. police say the girl's mother left her in the care of 19-year-old chabria murphy yesterday morning. officers say murphy was supposed to bring the infant back in the afternoon but didn't show up. the little girl's mother called police and officers say murphy eventually returned the girl to the station at 1:40 in the morning. investigators have not said if charges will be filed. one of the key figures in the watergate scandal died

today. charles colson helped run president nixon's reelection campaign when it hired men to burglarize the committee offices in 1972. colson spent several months in prison for trying to discredit the man behind the pentagon papers. after his release, he founded prison fellowship. colson spent the remaining years of his life helping ex-inmates. he died after surgery to fix a blood clot. charles colson was 80. coming up tonight, a guy who hates speed cameras so much, he pulls out a gun. why doctors say miley cyrus might be sparking a risky fad. and the

a man gets mad at a mobile speed camera in new mexico and goes to extremes to get even. this video shows a man pulling up to a van with a speed camera inside and firing a gun. the man also appears to be wearing a nightgown, oh, yeah. police are now working to identify him and to arrest him. a san francisco restaurant once known for having the world's rudest waiter, might be forced to shut down. the health department says sam wo's restaurant in chinatown has a, quote, filthy kitchen and the building is no longer up to code. the restaurant became popular in the '70s when a rude waiter would verbally abuse patrons and slam dishes down on the table. the waiter died in 1984. the restaurant owner will meet with city officials to make all necessary repairs. up next, chuck tells us when the worst of the thunderstorms will hit us this weekend. and why doctors say m

today, nbc 4 employees rolled up their sleeves for comcast cares today. 500 volunteers from nbc and our parent company, comcast, pitched in at langley middle school in northeast. they spruced up the newly renovated building and added murals to the walls. comcast cares is one of the biggest corporate day of volunteerism in the country. miley cyrus is grabbing attention lately for her dramatic weight loss. after rumors that she had an eating disorder, cyrus decided to speak out praising her gluten-free diet.

now some doctors are worried about the impact on her fans. nbc's renee chenault-fattah has the report. >> reporter: she's come a long way since "hannah montana." this doctor would like miley to stick to her day job. cyrus recently tweeted fans that she suffers from a gluten and lactose allergy. she wrote, everyone should try no gluten for a week. the change in our skin, physical and mental health is amazing. you won't go back. >> a gluten-free diet is incredibly difficult to follow and is typically only used for people with a certain disease. a lot of what she's saying doesn't make a tremendous amount of sense and isn't supported by

any scientific evidence. >> reporter: he believes cyrus' advice is misguided. >> if people did it for a long period of time, it could potentially create health problems. >> reporter: gluten is found in wheat, barly a lley and rye. allison green has been eating gluten-free when she was diagnosed with the disease when she was 2 years old. >> this could stop me from having children. >> reporter: ironically green says anyone who tries the diet shouldn't expect much of a weight loss. >> no, i struggle to stay thin and healthy on a gluten-free diet. >> there's no evidence that i'm aware of that suggest people lose weight on this diet. >> the market research firm

just dropping below 80 degrees. and the winds out of the south at 20. now a north wind at 12. that wind is going to drain much colder air and it will be in place tomorrow as the rain moves back in. 60 degrees in fredericksburg. planner for tomorrow, plenty of clouds and dampness around in the morning. not much rain to get your day started. however, the rain will move in by late morning. and by early afternoon, rain becoming moderate at times and heavy and stormy around here around the second half of the day tomorrow. light rain falling in the district. southern montgomery, much of prince george's down into parts of maryland county. heavier showers across the virginia/north carolina state line. but look at this mother lode of

pressure. jet stream energy is going to energize this system as it comes up the coastline. it's going to intensify very, very rapidly. a classic nor'easter. the rain's easing up for now. but it returns first thing tomorrow morning by about 9:00, 10:00 in the morning, the rain becoming moderate at times. tomorrow night, heavy rain. the colder air settles in as the storm races up the coastline. colder air, cold enough to change the raindrops back to snowflakes across southern parts of pennsylvania, northern maryland. far western maryland, maybe 3 to 6 inches of snow on the ground by monday morning commute to work and school. overnight tonight, not much. here we are at 10:00 tomorrow morning, there comes the rain showers back into the area. 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, almost an inch of rain down on the ground by then, with moderate rain pushing into the area by 8:00 tomorrow night.

for the caps, it's a quick turnaround. >> yeah. play today and you have to play tomorrow. the good news is, as long as you get channel 4, you can watch the game from home because tomorrow just like today is going to be on nbc. the caps, a team that barely made the playoffs, now one game away from knocking off the second highest scoring team in hockey. and oh, by the way, the defending stanley cup champs. now the caps have a chance to close out the series at verizon center tomorrow afternoon, 3:00 right here on nbc. nicklas backstrom back on the ice after his suspension. the capitals light the lamp twice in the second. dennis wideman's shot is stopped. alex semin's is not. nifty goal for semin. capitals up 1-0. three minutes later, jay beagle

getting in on the scoring action. he gets his first goal of the playoffs. you can sense the bruins are a little bit frustrated. but boston's good and they tied it up in a hurry. third period, joel ward with the puck. he shoots. mike knuble gets the rebound. pokes it back in. and the ex-bruin makes it 3-2, capitals. but here come the bruins again. this time on the power play. johnny boychuk blasts the one-timer past the rookie and we're tied. late in the third period now, it's the capitals on the power play. troy brouwer at the top of your screen. doing what he does, scoring game-winners. 4-3 is the final. the td garden crowd was stunned. the capitals now lead the series 3-2 and have a chance to close out the series at verizon center tomorrow afternoon. >> it's the ideal situation to be playing at home tomorrow. got to go hard, use all the
