11:14 pm
salary gap between men and women continues to shrink. but in the long run, men are still getting the bigger paychecks. nbc's chris sanchez takes a look at why that gap still exists. >> when young people first enter the workforce, their paychecks will look about the same for the same job. but as time goes on, men's paychecks will go up much more quickly. last year that difference meant that women earned 16 cents per dollar less than male counterparts doing the same job. the chair of shoon say state's economic department says there is one very big reason -- biology. that women spend less time working and, thus, less time building up their salaries. >> when you are in the labor force continuously, you are earning skills, you are showing longevity. and women if you look at labor force participation rates, still leave the workforce more often than men. not for as long a period of time as it used to be, but more so than men. and that accounts for some of

the discrepancy. >> reporter: ortega says the fields women choose also account for part of the difference. like teaching, which doesn't pay overtime. or retail where, as the candidate pool grows, the salaries drop. even consumer preference as in professional sports. but a political science professor says those aren't the only reasons. >> i as a professor know there's discrimination in colleges and universities where men and women in the same departments with the same qualifications, same experience, men make more. you can't explain that by choices because we're doing the same job and we have the same degrees. so it's both. and we shouldn't try to explain it all away. >> reporter: while the economics professor says that only the market can bring parody, and only in time, the political science professor says legislation can prevent some of the wage inequality. >> when employers know that it is possible that they would be sued if they engage in discrimination, then we encourage parody.
11:16 pm
>> that was chris sanchez reporting. according to the american association of university women, washington, d.c., actually ranks best in the nation for pay equality. on average, women have an earnings ratio of 91%. maryland ranks sixth and virginia comes in 19th. spoiler alert. following an advertising and marketing showdown, another celebrity got the boot tonight on "celebrity apprentice." tonight, the team had to create a macy's display and slogan for donald trump's new fragrance success. aubrey o'day as project manager won the challenge earning $40,000 for her challenge. but an unpopular slogan created by penn jillette earned him the infamous phrase, you're fired. >> i wasn't sure how penn would do without his silent partner teller, but he was fantastic. absolutely fantastic. next week you don't want to miss seeing what don jr. walks in on when he visits both teams and
11:17 pm
you may be surprised by who i decide to fire. >> there are now just six contestants left. celebrity apprentice airs sunday nights right before this broadcast. well, despite the weather, lots of people put on their ponchos and headed to the national mall to celebrate earth day. the event included d.c. mayor vincent gray, the reverend jesse jackson and the band cheap trick. it also included lots of demonstrations on how to be energy efficient. and help save the environment. and that soaking rain we got today had to be helpful as well. >> just what the doctor ordered for us. we were more than five inches behind in rainfall for the year before the weekend started. and just when we needed it the most, we got what we needed from mother nature. plenty of rain. not a whole lot on your saturday. but today is added up to well over an inch by the washington area. some folks in southern maryland ended up with several inches of rain. on a sunday night, it is still light rain here in washington. it is cloudy and it's cold and
