parts of the country as well as heavy rain and a danger of flooding. nbc's meteorologist bill karins is here with the historic weather. good morning. >> as far as the sounds of breaking tree limbs go, that will be the worst of it today. that's the worst concern, people losing power for an extended period of time. we know how warm it's been this spring. in western pennsylvania and new york the leaves are full on the trees and that's where the snow is now coming down. it's doing to be a heavy wet snow. it started in most areas over the last couple of hours and intensify throughout the day today. all-day snow in the end of april from buffalo, ross chester, down western p.a. it's snowing as far as western portions of maryland and into west virginia. so as far as the areas of greatest concern, we're really here into western new york from the buffalo area out on 8 f to 390 and then back here to pittsburgh and state college on interstate 80 and on the pennsylvania turnpike will be some of the worst drives.

how much snow are we talking? for this time of year, this is really a historic snowstorm. we get snow this time of years but never this much we're looking at 6 to 12 inches. we'll given you the snow totals later in the show. this is really incredible. >> bill, thank you so much. we'll check back in with you in just a few moments. >> first, the former neighborhood watch captain charged with the second-degree murder in the death of florida teenager trayvon martin has been released from the county jail right around midnight eastern time and nbc's jay gray is in sanford, florida, with the very latest. jay. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, lynn. this is where it happened. the waiting game ended as george zimmerman walked out of the jail here in seminole county as you talked about. it happened around midnight. he was carrying a small paper bag. there was a waiting suv, he got in that vehicle and drove away.

there's been a lot of speculation where he may go, what may happen. his attorneys say they have four or five locations where he could go. he will be in hiding basically. he will be out of the public eye obviously. there's still a lot of frustration, a lot of emotions involved in this case. we do know he has an electronic gps monitoring bracelet and sheriffs here tell us that bracelet will work anywhere in the united states, so he's mostly outside the state of florida. that's the latest on this story, lynn. back to you now. >> all right. jay gray for us there in florida. thank you, jay. well, nbc news has learned that investigators have found possible bits of forensic evidence in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old etan patz. dozens of items including strands of hair, a piece of paper and other possible evidence was found by investigators searching a new york city basement. the materiel will now be sent to a virginia lab. the boy's family has been told no human remains were found.

the basement, which was along the route at the time of the boy's disappearance was used as a workshop and storage space. now here's other news making news early today in america. in ohio police used tear gas to break up a crowd near kent state university. officers say an annual block party had gotten out of hand with students fighting and throwing beer bottles. some 3,000 people were on hand. more than 30 were arrested. in the nation's capital, a frightening attack was all captured on video. a pair of dogs possibly pit bulls began terrorizing two teenagers who climbed on top of a kaur for safety. one of the dogs leapt onto the car forcing one of the kids to jump off. a man who came to their rescue was attack by the animals while trying to stop them. police are looking for the dogs and their owners. investigators are looking at a man who opened fire on a police van recording video of

speeding drivers. the gunman who appeared to be wearing a night gown hit the unmanned vehicle three times but the camera did survive. the shooter is still on the loose. and finally it is not your typical late-night snack. kansas university set a guinness world record for the biggest plate of nachos. 80 feet long, 10 inches deep. i think it looks disgusting. 4,689 pounds of chips, cheese, and other fillings helped raise money for a local charity. looks like a tummy ache waiting to happen. >> stop. looking at your weather once again is bill karins. >> you can't put too much sour cream and salt on it because then it gets soggy. you have to keep it warm and crispy. >> how about some weather. >> good morning, everyone. after our soaker yesterday, the rain is moving north. the rain is going to be a dratdic improvement.

and in sports last night in the nhl, the l.a. kings knocked out vancouver's top seeded canucks to move on to round two of the stanley cup playoffs. here's nbc's mario solis with an early look at all your sports headlines. hi, there, good morning. before the stanley cup playoffs began the canucks and penguins were the odds-on favorites to meet in finals and today both teams are done. we'll start in vancouver where the kings needed overtime to take out the best team in the nhl. the canucks with a costly turnover and jarret stoll makes them play. kings send the canucks passing with a 2-1 win in o.t. they advance to play the st. louis in the second round of the playoffs. to filly where the flyers make quick work of the penguins, never looking back claude giroux scores just 32 seconds into the game. flyers up 2-0 after 1. they go on to win 5-1 and eliminate the penguins in six games. >> capitals also had a chance to

breaking news on the roads. the outer loop of the beltway in silver spring is closed due to a serious accident. >> it happened between colesville road and georgia avenue. we want to check in with matt to find out the latest. a real mess, matt. >> reporter: at this point, everything remains shut down on the outer loop. it is past colesville road, 29, a double tractor-trailer there. it looks like this is going to be with us for a while. you can jump off on university, take that over to georgia, georgia back down to the outer loop. that will get you around the problem. a few extra minutes. we are starting says to see the delays form at 29. that's going to be backing up to university shortly. new hampshire before you know it. once again, if you can wade through the mess, stick with university over to georgia, georgia back down to the beltway. and then you will bypass the problem completely. elsewhere, not too much to worry about. no construction at this point on the south side beltway. we've got a good go as you head from van dorn to the wilson bridge. seven minutes at an average of 58 miles per hour. back to you both.
