11:28 am
three other adults, all unconscio unconscious, not breathing. after medical consultation, all five have been pronounced deceased. we believe they're members of one family, but not positive of that fact yet. we found levels of c.o. extremely high in the house. over 550 parts per million. when you compare that to a normal healthy atmosphere of anywhere between zero to five parts per million, 550 is extremely high. >> mark, have you been able to locate the source of the carbon monoxide? >> not at this point in time. but one of the sources we're looking at strongly is the furnace inside the house and the stove. officials from the washington gas company are already on the scene with us, helping us in this investigation. >> have you been able to determine how long the five had been deceased? is it something that just happened this morning? >> at that high a level of c.o. in what is a relatively small, confined space of this house, it
11:29 am
would not take long for them to be overcome by the c.o. and then suffer fatal injury. so we're more than likely, it occurred with just over a couple of hour period of time. but all that is currently being investigate. >> do they believe this is something unique to this specific house, nothing else in the neighborhood with this kind of thing going on inside? >> i can't say that we have had other calls in community of south lawn that involved carbon monoxide. we have been through this neighborhood several times, canvassing it and handing out information about c.o. and warning people about the dangers of c.o. so, no, this is -- this is not our first time in the community of south lawn, investigating c.o. leaks. >> so again, mark, you've said you're not sure this is one family or not. have you been able to locate any next of kin to alert them to the deaths that have happened this morning? >> yes, as a matter of fact it was the next of kin that had called 911 after finding his
11:30 am
family members unconscious, he had come to the residence to check on their welfare because he not heard of them and on entering the house he found the unconscious people and immediately notified 911. >> is this a single-family home dwelling? >> no, this is a one-story single-family home. i would say it's about 1900 square feet. making it a relatively small structure. and that allowed the c.o. to build up relatively quickly. >> what would be, do you have any suspicion as what could be the cause of it, mark? >> again, we'd be looking at any appliance that burns fuel. natural gas, we've ruled out any generators or anything like that. that produces high amounts of c.o. so we are focusing on the appliances. the furnace, and the gas stove inside the house. >> so this is a single-family home on shelby drive in the oxon

11:46 am
now. pat? >> reporter: barbara, this is a tragic scene unfolding in oxon hill, we're on shelby drive here. i want to direct your attention to that red brick home down the street. you can see emergency workers are there. that's where it happened. that's where they say around 10:45 this morning, someone came to this house because they were concerned, they hadn't heard from someone inside there. they were concerned about their welfare. when they opened the door, they went inside, they found people unconscious inside and called 911. fire officials got here, they searched the house. and they found five people, five people inside deceased. they include three adult males, in their 30s, one adult male in his 40s. one female in her 60s. now they say normally, carbon monoxide in the air goes from zero to five parts per million. in this house, they say they
11:47 am
found more than 550 parts per million carbon monoxide in the air. they say that is lethal. they say it can be a killer and a very short time. they're investigating the fir n furnace, they're investigating the stove. trying to figure out what happened here. in the meantime, investigators from the police and the fire department are going through the house, trying to identify everyone who is here. trying to see what led to this event here this morning. erica gonzales is here with me now. she talked to some friends of the victims. erica, what can you tell us? >> well i was just speaking to several family members of the people that were inside. they do tell me that they were very close family members. that they all belonged to the same church as well. they're from el salvador. they were telling me that the brother-in-law i believed called this morning because they hadn't heard from them in some time or they called and it was odd that they didn't answer the phone. and sure enough that when they
11:48 am
arrived, five people dead. >> it's a very sad scene unfolding here in oxon hill. we don't know what caused it. we know they think it's carbon monoxide. because the reading is so high, 550 parts per million. that's like 100 times what you would find in normal atmosphere. and i know they're going through the house, they're checking the furnace, they're checking the gas stove. they're trying to figure out what caused this. but little consolation for this family. >> now and what the family members were saying, they were asking me, they hadn't spoken with authorities, either. and when i spoke to them, they said this is the first that we know of this. initially we just thought that maybe they were unconscious and needed medical attention. and i said no ma'am, no, sir, we've been informed by authorities that five people are dead. they were just heartbroken. they say maybe because it was so much cooler last night than it has been in the past couple of days. maybe there was something wrong with the furnace or a gas stove. which is what is still under investigation. but the family members have just found out that they have lost five of their loved ones.
11:49 am
>> i was told they were found in various rooms in the house. some were found in bathrooms, not everybody was found in bed. so this could have happened early this morning when it finally kicked in. >> they said they called this morning, it was odd that they did not answer the phone. which is when somebody came to check on them. a terrible loss for this family, we spoke to two people, both family members and both said these are god-fearing people. they all go to the same church. they're just believing that the lord is going to take care of them. they said this is the first that we hear about it. they were still under the impression that these people just needed medical attention. >> five people found dead inside a home here on shelby drive. in oxon hill. police believe the cause, carbon monoxide. we're talking about four men, three adult males in their 30s, one male in their 40s and a female in their 60s. investigators are on the scene, trying to figure out what led to all this. we're on the scene as well. we'll have more details coming up for you.
