inside a home where the carbon monoxide levels were 100 times higher than normal. it's a silent killer that has devastated a prince georges county community. i'm jim handly. and a faulty pipe is blamed for this tragedy. the victims, three men and two women were found this morning in a home on the 700 block of shelby drive and oxen hill. pat collins is live at the scene now with the very latest. pat? >> reporter: pat, if you look down this street, you can see friends and family members of the victims'. they have been here all day long. this is the worst carbon monoxide incident in recent history, in prince georges county. five people found dead inside this house, two women, three men, the only survivor, a pet dog. now it happened around 10:45

this morning, a relative couldn't reach anyone by phone, so he came to the house, made the discovery and then called 911. fire officials say the house had a faulty furnace and no carbon monoxide detectors. >> i've got to say, though, there is no indication of anything other than a tragic loss here, a tragic accident. no indication of that whatsoever. >> reporter: at 5:00, more details about the incident. at 5:00, more information about the victims. i'll be back at 5:00. pat collins live in oxen hill. >> in response to this deadly carbon monoxide tragedy today, some reminders on how to keep your home safe. the consumer product safety commission has some tips on preventing co poisoning. the first thing to do is make sure your home has a carbon monoxide detector. you can pick one up at your local hardware store. and if you have one, be sure the batteries are working. next, have your heating system

professionally inspected every year to make sure appliances are working properly. and never operate a portable generator or any gas-powered tool either in or near a garage, house, or other building. coming up tonight right here on "news 4 at 5:00," liz crenshaw will join us in the studio with more on carbon monoxide safety. turning now to the weather, we've had a warm-up today. is it a sign of things to come? >> veronica johnson has your first weather word. how about it, veronica? >> well, we're going to be moving in the direction more like for late april around here. how about today? we're ten degrees higher than we were yesterday at this same time. up to 60 degrees now, our wind out of the southwest at 8 miles per hour, but it has been another breezy day for us. we're getting some current gusts through the area at 20 miles per hour. those winds are going to start to settle down very slowly for the late afternoon and evening hours. we're at 62 degrees currently in rockville, maryland, montgomery

county. good afternoon to you, college park coming in at 63 degrees right now. it's 64 in warrenton, virginia. so across the area now just running a couple of degrees below average today. and not a bad day with more sunshine throughout the area. that big area of low pressure that produced all the nasty weather through the weekend and even that snow yesterday up north, that area of low pressure just north of new york now. you can see where the cloud line is just over the border of maryland. so we were really lucky today getting in on the sunshine. as far as your good night forecast, temperatures will drop to the mid-50s by 9:00. again, expect a few clouds to be around the area here for the late evening and early part of the night. breezy for us, dry and quiet to start your wednesday. we'll take a look and see how unsettled we may be for the coming days for the rest of april, in fact. we'll take a look at that. back to you. >> all right, veronica. a revealing day in the john edwards trial. a former aide andrew young took the stand for the second day.

he testified that edwards instructed him to solicit money from rich friends to help hide edwards' pregnant mistress. the testimony is at the center of the prosecution's case that the former presidential candidate illegally used campaign money to hide his affair. jay gray has more now on today's developments from greensboro, north carolina. >> as john edwards returned to the federal courthouse in greensboro, he returned to the witness stand. >> this case is no longer about the united states versus john edwards. it's clear from the opening statements this case is about john edwards versus andrew young. >> reporter: young outlined a complex system he said was created by edwards to collect money from rich friends including bunny mellon to help hide his then pregnant mistress rielle hunter. he testified that he said begin giving hunter an allowance in 2007 after threatening to expose their affair. >> andrew young described

edwards' role as the director of this entire operation. that it was john edwards' idea ultimately to ask for funds that could wind up supporting rielle hunter, that edwards knew about and gave guidance on how the money flow should take place in order to cover the tracks. >> reporter: when discussing the intricate plan that funneled money through he and his wife's personal bank accounts, he told the court, "it was crazy, we felt extremely uneasy about it." in an explosive moment, young talked about confronting edwards with news that hunter was pregnant. edwards responded by calling hunter crazy and using an expletive. harsh words that analysts say could come back to haunt the defense if jurors believe edwards, in fact, spoke that way about the mother of his child. another key element of young's testimony today, which some believe will ultimately benefit the defense, he repeatedly said that edwards, an attorney himself, insisted there was nothing illegal about their plan.

jay gray, nbc news, greensboro, north carolina. >> andrew young has immunity from prosecution. he will not be cross-examined today by the defense. that'll happen tomorrow at the earliest. singer and actress jennifer hudson is back in a chicago courtroom for the second day of testimony and the trial of her former brother-in-law. william balfour is charged with killing hudson's mother, brother, and nephew in a jealous rage four years ago now. today hudson lowered her head and closed her eyes when a police officer on the witness stand described finding the victims. hudson took the stand yesterday. she has said she plans to attend every day of the proceedings. the trial's expected to last about a month. five states are holding presidential primaries and mitt romney is looking to lock up the republican nomination. meanwhile, romney and president obama are laying the groundwork for their fall campaigns and both are reaching out to what may be a critical block of voters. college students. brian mooar has that story.

pay off those loans. he's looking to put away newt gingrich who is making what looks like a last stand in delaware. >> i was hoping we would do well here. carry it or come very, very close. >> and then you'll have to reassess. >> then we'll have to reassess. >> reporter: 331 delegates up for grabs, mitt romney's hoping this is the last turn on his road to the nomination. >> the latest polls show president obama has an edge with younger voters, but his challenge is getting them excited enough to vote. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news 4. >> and as part of that effort to reach out to younger voters, president obama will appear tonight on nbc's late night with jimmy fallon. the main suspect in the 2005 disappearance of natalee holloway may be brought here to the u.s. to face extortion charges. joran van der sloot faces those charges in alabama. prosecutors there say he tried to bilk $250,000 from holloway's mother in exchange for

information about what happened to her daughter. an attorney for van der sloot says they're evaluating the request to expedite the dutchman. he says he believes he'll be extradited in the next three months. he's serving a 28-year sentence in peru. the head of the pentagon is weighing in on the secret service prostitution scandal in colombia. meanwhile, there are more agents involved now. nbc's mark potter has our report. >> reporter: as defense secretary leon panetta arrived in bogota for previously scheduled meetings with colombian officials, a senior u.s. defense official said the number of american military personnel being investigated in the prostitution scandal has risen to 12 and that security clearances have been pulled. >> my biggest concern is the issue of security. and what could possibly have

been jeopardized by virtue of this kind of behavior. >> reporter: the pentagon says the latest target is an army soldier who worked for the white house communications agency where military personnel set up and maintain equipment. meantime the white house announced it has done its own investigation and cleared its staffers. >> there's no indication that any member of the white house advance team engaged in any improper conduct or behavior. >> reporter: in the meantime, a source says the colombian police have been very helpful to the u.s. investigators who have interviewed all the women identified as being part of this case. mark potter, nbc news in colombia, back to you. >> at least one lawmaker isn't satisfied with the investigation into the white house staffers' involvement in this scandal. last night, iowa senator chuck grassley asked the white house to provide more details by thursday. when we come right back on "news 4 at 4:00," we're going to talk about baby news for megan

that at the u.s. naval academy is likely the man on campus right now. take a bow. he got that unforgettable smooch from katy perry. the singer called him up on stage at the concert on friday. perry said she wanted him to help her recreate that iconic 1945 photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in time square. before the kiss, perry warned the shipman she was sick and flew with a fever but didn't want to cancel the show. he said he didn't mind one bit. >> now they're both sick. >> in love maybe. who knows. hey, congratulations to megan fox. >> a source close to fox confirmed to e! news she is expecting. this will be the first child for the star of the movie transformers and her husband brian austin green.

up a little controversy. >> she's good at this, isn't she? o'donnell is in a feud of sorts with actress lindsay lohan. lohan is set to star as elizabeth taylor as the lifetime tv movie. o'donnell criticized the casting of lohan. lohan was arrested a couple of years ago. you'll recall for a dwi. she recently finished probation for a jewelry theft case. >> i feel very sorry for her. i think she needs a lot of help. she needs a lot of time away. >> is it a good idea to cast her in this movie? >> no, because she's had a lot of trouble doing every single movie. including snl. i think she's not in a place to work. >> ouch. well, for her part, lohan's publicist told e! news, "i think rosie should focus on her own career and stop worrying about everybody else's." ouch. o'donnell's talk show on the oprah winfrey network was canceled this month after five months on the air. so don't be throwing those rocks

well, we're not talking about snow today. >> no. >> we're talking about warmth today. >> do we want to talk about snow anymore? not really, no. >> not here in this studio, we don't. >> he did a fantastic job. we are talking about warming up. we added 10 degrees to yesterday's temperature, that's where we are today, feeling a bit better. we'll add another 10 degrees to today's temperature to get to tomorrow. right now, a few clouds have come into the area. those clouds will continue to increase. remember, with milder conditions around here, the warmer air leads to a higher pollen count. today at 167 grains per cubic meter. this count was taken this morning, likely to be higher now for the afternoon and we'll be climbing until we get our next chance for rain. and grass pollen is coming along

too. satellite and radar from the early part of the day. not much in the way of clouds, but this area of low pressure, yeah, that nasty low is still up there north of new york right now. the spin, there it is. still some clouds coming right through areas around the maryland-pennsylvania border. some clouds rotating through, and a few clouds coming into the area later tonight. as far as temperatures throughout the area, bristow, virginia, good afternoon to you, 67 degrees, montgomery county, gaithersburg at 61, leesburg, virginia, and reston, virginia. breezy and gusty conditions yet again. winds between 20 and 28 miles per hour through the area. again, those winds will settle down once the sun sets which happens to be today just before 8:00. a chilly start to your day tomorrow. we'll go from the 50s to the low 40s early tomorrow mortganing. and going to have a partly sunny

start throughout the area. but a good deal of sunshine. as we talk about that warm-up, take a look at the conditions here through the east, 64, raleigh, durham, north carolina, and look at the high temperatures through the plains. there's been a lot of high heat here, record high temperatures, that heat will expand to the east over the next couple of days. a chilly start to the day tomorrow. here's your partly sunny sky. the warm front, yet another one moving through that will give us a little bit of rain thursday of this week. 46 to 54 for your evening. we're cool but nice. for tomorrow morning, clear skies and a chilly start anywhere from 33 in the far northwestern suburbs to 43 degrees in town. then your high temperature for tomorrow 65 to 70 degrees. again, adding about ten degrees to today's temperature. here's a look at your four-day forecast. next chance of rain and it's showers and storms that could likely start early in on the day on thursday and go right through the afternoon. that's coming up on thursday with a high of 70 degrees. we'll take a look at the rest of the weekend in a couple of

welcome back to "news 4 at 4:00." i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. at 4:35, people were found dead in an oxen hill home this morning. all apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning. a woman, her sister, her husband, and two renters. the exhaust pipe from the furnace had holes in it which allowed that deadly gas to escape into the home. we'll have more in a live report and team coverage at the top of the hour. a former aide to john edwards says the former presidential candidate knew he was using campaign funds illegally. in court today, andrew young describes how edwards' allegedly directed him to get money from rich donors and give it to edwards' pregnant mistress. edwards is charged with six criminal counts relating to campaign finance violations. he pleaded not guilty. singer and actress jennifer hudson is attending the trial of her former brother-in-law who is accused of killing three members of her family.

today hudson bowed her head and closed her eyes when a police officer on the stand described finding the victims. she testified at the trial yesterday. there are presidential primaries in new york, pennsylvania, connecticut, rhode island and delaware today. newt gingrich has invested heavily in delaware and told nbc news last night that a poor-s w showing there would prompt him to reassess. ♪ give me a sign hit me baby one more time ♪ >> he hit the competition and the judges with a britney spears cover yesterday. tony lucas' performance was the surprise of the night on "the voice." >> and there's christina. let's head out to stephanie stanton live in l.a. for more on last night's performances.

stephanie, tony sang "baby one more time" we remember it. the classic single by his fellow mickey mouse club alum. what was christina's take on it? >> i'd say he hit the jackpot with that performance. even christina said it was good. you'll recall a couple of weeks ago christina didn't have any kind words for tony. she called him one-dimensional. so he put his head together with adam. they came up with the plan to sing the britney spears song. he came out swinging essentially knocked it out of the park, rocked the house, got a standing ovation, and i would say i'm going to guess here but i would say this solidifies tony's moving forward in this competition because he is number 21 on the itunes top 100 charts. and remember, each itunes download counts as a vote. >> another memorable performance came from juliette simms. she had an elaborate costume

with feathers, stage make-up. how do the judges like the singing, though? >> she did. she's also a fan favorite. and the judges again really liked her performance. they like the singing. she's an indy rocker, she's got a gritty voice. she came out, you know, again wearing these big feathers, she had feathers at the end of her performance and really the song was really strong, very powerful. juliette simms also impressing in this competition and she hit number 32 on the overall itunes download. juliette and tony gave very strong performances in this competition. >> hey, stephanie, our hometown favorite returns to the stage on monday and she had this to say about making it this far in the competition. let's take a listen. >> especially for me, i think getting this far and it does make you a little bit nervous, but you kind of have this air of

on the fate of a vintage diner in d.c.'s trinidad neighborhood. crews hauled the capitol city diner away. it shut down in january, and the former owner sold it on ebay. the new owner is the edens retail group. they're renovating it into a food destination known as union market. and that's where the diner will reportedly wind up. it's still not clear what's going to be on the menu when the diner opens. but -- >> bet there'll be a line. bet there'll be a line outside that diner. >> always is. there's more to come on "news 4 at 4:00." >> a teenage girl walking along when out of nowhere, the sidewalk gives way beneath her. it's incredible video. plus, dion sanders' wife is out of jail. she's accused of attacking him, but she says everyone else has

breaking news out of hollywood right now. "keeping up with the kardashians" is staying on the air for another few years. they just signed a three-season deal with e!. tmz reports it's worth $40 million. that's the most money ever for reality tv. e! is owned by comcast, which is the parent company of nbc 4. veronica joins us now. and april is turning unsettled on us. >> yeah, i've got the pattern kind of what we're going to be in for much of the rest of april here. it's going to be unsettled. we're going to be for the most part running around average, but at least for the next two days, we're talking about a warm-up and again, a little bit of some rain that's going to come back to the area. take a look at this. this is the pattern, the weather pattern that we were under on monday. the jet stream that really does so much in controlling our weather. it was deep down through the south yesterday. of course it was chilly and wet for so many locations throughout the northeast and the mid-atlantic states.

while the west coast was seeing the warmth. in fact, they had record high temperatures. not just through the u.s., but up into canada, calgary canada up in the upper 70s and low 80s around that area. idaho, 86 for a high yesterday and las vegas, nevada, 99 degrees. so our pattern is going to change for the next two days for wednesday and for thursday. we're going to see that jet stream rise. so anything on the north side of the jet is cool on the south side warm. and all that warmth then now today in the central plains will be making its way eastward. so we'll see a little bit of a warm-up. 70 to 75 degrees. maybe a tad warmer the day after. but 68 degrees, that's where we'll be tomorrow. then into the mid-70s. and look at the 80-degree warmth down south. then we're going to see the pattern change again for the weekend. in fact, the stubborn system will be giving us quite a bit of rain for both saturday and sunday coming up. we're chilly for tomorrow morning starting out in the 30s.

keep an eye on this video shot in china last month. an unsuspecting girl was walking

down the street and suddenly fell through the pavement. a cab saw what happened and immediately pulled over to help the girl. he even climbed into the hole. the hole turned out to be about 20 feet deep. emergency crews eventually arrived on the scene and they were able to pull both of them out. the girl was visibly shaken, but she was fine, she was alive. authorities say water apparently eroded the ground beneath the sidewalk. and that's why that happened. >> well, there wasn't much of a warning around it, cell phone or not. >> yeah. a confusing street sign led to a really bad decision for a driver making his way around paris today. >> yeah, take a look at this. the man was looking for a parking garage when he accidentally drove down the steps of a metro station. he managed to stop before going all the way down. no one was on the stairs at the time, and there were no injuries. police were able to pull his car out undamaged. the 26-year-old driver says there was a sign for a garage above the station and he just made a mistake.

dion sanders' es stranged wife is accused of breaking into his room and attacking him. she says she's innocent and being treated unfairly because her husband is a former nfl star. but sanders claims his children witnessed the whole thing. ellen goldberg from our sister station in dallas has the story. >> my kids just saw that, they're scarred for life. they saw two women jump their dad in their own house, in his room, in my room. sad, man. >> former dallas cowboy and nfl hall of famer dion sanders was visibly worked up after he said his estranged wife walked into his bedroom and attacked him inside their home. >> right now, is somebody going to die and it's going to be me before the courts do something and get this woman out my house, it's absurd.
