block of shelby drive. that's in oxen hill, maryland. pat collins is there now with more on the story. pat? >> reporter: jim, the crowd continues to grow here. there's a great sense of sorrow here on shelby drive. after the silent killer claims five lives. >> family, friends, tears in the street today following a tragic discovery at this home on shelby drive. a woman, her husband, her sister, two renters all five dead. all apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning. the only survivor, a pet dog. this is what it was like when the firefighters arrived on the scene. >> there were a total of five victims down in this house. we have one out back. we're working on the rest. we're going to need more medical units.

>> it happened around 10:45 this morning. a relative couldn't reach anyone on the phone. so he went to the house, opened the door, made the discovery, called 911. >> so there is no indication of anything other than a tragic loss here, a tragic accident. >> the intensity. in some places inside the house, the level of carbon mo knonoxid measured to be 560 parts per million. at 30 parts per million, it's considered to be lethal. the cause, the exhaust pipe from the furnace had holes so the deadly gas didn't go up the chimney but instead escaped into the house. >> the reality is, these people apparently were affected very quickly by a large quantity of carbon monoxide and without the detector and without the connection of the pipe, we are where we are. >> as news spread, neighbors

connections to this area and to el salvador. montgomery county firefighters trying to figure out what sparked a fast-moving fire in aspen hill that started on twin valley lane just before 4:00 this morning. the firefighters believed that fire started in the fireplace. part of the roof collapsed as a result. the family was home at the time managed to get out safely. up in baltimore today, a story that's difficult to comprehend. a woman took out a butcher knife and stabbed her 8-month-old daughter again and again in the neck and the chest. it happened up in baltimore inside a social services building. investigators say the woman got upset for some reason during a meeting with a social worker there. >> at some point, the mother became irate, pulled out a long kitchen knife and began stabbing the baby. as it stands, we do have the mother in custody. she's being questioned. >> the child is still alive in a hospital now. they say she's going to be okay. the incident happened at an

office that deals mainly with foster care services. animal control officers have hit a road block. they are trying to find two dogs that were involved in an aggressive attack in northeast d.c. last friday night as you can see on this video. this was a surveillance camera attached to a nearby building. shows the two children being attacked jumping on the roof of a car to try to escape the dogs. the kids were not hurt, but a man who tried to help them was bitten in the hand. he may have some nerve damage it was that severe. tonight, the search for those dogs is at a stand still. >> we have some tips from neighbors about where the dog's owners live. the building that they pointed us to, they have all denied ownership. we don't have any idea where the dogs are located or who their owner may be. >> if the dogs are found, they could be euthanized and the owner could be facing criminal charges. the defense in the john edwards' corruption trial hopes to do damage control when it

gets to cross-examination the prosecution's star witness. today andrew young gave some more testimony against the former presidential candidate. the former senator is accused of using almost $1 million in campaign funds to cover up an affair with his pregnant mistress. young outlined a complex system to collect money from wealthy donors that he said the money was then funneled through personal bank accounts to avoid being traced back to the campaign. there are republican primary contests today in new york, pennsylvania, connecticut, rhode island, and in delaware. in the meantime, mitt romney and president obama are laying the ground work for the general election. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: well, primary voters headed to the polls today in connecticut, delaware, new york, pennsylvania, and rhode island, president obama was in north carolina. he was reaching out to the young voters he needs for reelection and speaki their language. >> the hash tag is "don't tudoue

states and 231 delegates up for grabs, mitt romney's hoping this is the last turn on his road for the nomination. >> the latest poll shows president obama has an edge with younger voters, but his challenge is getting them excited enough to vote. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news 4. president obama's effort to connect with younger voters includes an appearance tonight on the nbc show "late night with jimmy fallon." bob mcdonnell often is mentioned as a possible running mate for mitt romney. today on wtop's ask the governor program, he was asked whether he would accept the republican party's vice presidential nomination. >> i'm not looking for it. i'm not asking for it. i've got a great job as you know. but i think any public servant if the nominee comes and says you can help my party and country, of course you consider it. although i was not aware of the v.d.o.t. brought up. obviously those -- >> governor mcdonnell's

political action committee is planning an advertising campaign to highlight his successes. the "washington post" reports the pac has bought nearly $400,000 of air time in virginia's major media markets. those ads will run on several stations here in washington including this one. well, maryland is now facing a so-called doomsday scenario because the state lawmakers and the governor still cannot reach a budget deal. and if they don't and time is running out, there will likely be deep cuts in services and personnel if the governor doesn't call a special session of the legislature this summer. chris gordon reports. >> reporter: expanding gaming in maryland has become a contentious issue for state lawmakers. as a result, they failed to pass a gaming bill or a budget before time ran out on the legislative session. it was hoped that maryland's legislative leaders meeting this morning with governor o'malley

could reach agreement on calling a special session that could take up the budget and possibly gaming and other issues like funding transportation infrastructure. but the leaders left after being told the governor wants guarantees that they have the votes to pass a budget before he will call a special success. >> i have to take the opportunity to sit down with the leaders of the house. >> governor o'malley left annapolis for baltimore where he spoke at the state board education and later said publicly he favors a special session focused exclusively on passing a budget. >> if we're able to resolve the budget in may and then come back say in early august to resolve the open questions on gaming, that would be enough time for it to be on the ballot in the fall. >> baltimore's mayor sports the idea of expanding table gaming and a sixth casino location in prince georges county. we caught up with prince georges

county executive baker here after his meeting with the mayor. >> i understand the need to want to separate the budget out. but i think the quicker we deal with the whole issue of gaming in the state, the better it is and that's what my conversation to the mayor was about. because here the gaming issue is about revenues. it was about how we closed budget gaps in baltimore city and prince georges county. >> news 4. the lawyer for hall of fame pitcher roger clemens says evidence against his client was manipulated. opening statements began today here in the district. clemens is accused of lying to congress about whether he ever used steroids. the case hinges on the testimony of brian macname. clemens' lawyers say they cannot corroborate those claims and that he manipulated the evidence so he could sell some books.

two days now, we're just about 99% sure that robert griffin iii will be the new redskins quarterback. today rg3 was up in new york city already. that's the site of the nfl draft. he was at a subway restaurant on fifth avenue to unveil a life-size smoke house barbecue chicken statue to announce his official subway famous fan title. the sculpture is an artistic representation or let's say it's a representation of griffin from the chest up. stands approximately 3 feet tall, made up almost entirely of subway smoke house barbecue chicken. dan hellie loves him so barbecue chicken. so he was in the house. >> everything that i've done personally to get to where i am, all the teammates i've had, all the coaches that have worked with me, it'll finally hit me that all that hard work has paid off. made it to the nfl. and after that night, it's up

breaking news tonight. two more secret service employees will be stepping down in the wake of that prostitution scandal that has rocked the agency. we have also learned two agents will be cleared of serious misconduct. all of this came out as the pentagon speaks out on the military personnel also implicated in all of this. nbc's mark potter has more from colombia. >> reporter: as leon panetta arrived in bogota for previously scheduled meetings with colombian officials, a senior u.s. defense official said the number of military personnel

being investigated has risen to 12 and security cleaners has been pulled. >> my biggest concern is the issue of security. and what could possibly be jeopardized by virtue of this kind of behavior. >> reporter: the latest target was an army soldier who worked for the white house communication agency where military personnel set up and maintain equipment. in the meantime, the white house announced it has done its own investigation and cleared its staffers. >> there's no indication that any member of the white house advance team engaged in any improper conduct or behavior. >> reporter: meantime, a source says the colombian police have been very helpful to the u.s. investigators who have now interviewed all the women identified as being part of this case. mark potter, nbc news, in colombia, back to you. u.s. officials believe north

korea could test a nuclear weapon underground as early as tonight. a source tells nbc news the u.s. is 100% certain there will be a nuclear test within the next two weeks. officials also believe north korea may also have already up to several dozen nuclear weapons that could be launched. last month they tested a long-range ballistic missile, but it failed. bradley manning is the soldier accused of orchestrating the biggest leak of military secrets in u.s. history. he leaked hundreds of thousands of classified cables and war documents that were published by the wikileaks website. manning was at ft. mead today for a pre-trial hearing. his lawyers say he -- that the leak material did not harm u.s. interests. they want the government to turn over damage estimates conducted by the cia, the state department, and other agencies. the judge ordered prosecutors to give her the documents so she

can decide whether to turn them over. she also said she will rule tomorrow on a defense motion to dismiss all the charges. the main suspect in the 2005 disappearance of natalee holloway may be extradited to the united states. joran van der sloot faces extortion charges in alabama. prosecutors say he tried to bilk $250,000 from holloway's mother in exchange for information about what happened to her daughter. an attorney for van der sloot says peru is evaluating a request to extradite the jailed dutchman. he says he believes he'll be extradited in the next three months. he is currently serving a 28-year sentence in peru for killing a woman he met in a casino there. a simple stroll took a frightening turn for one teenage girl in china. take a look. the teenager was walking down a city street talking on a phone when she suddenly -- there she goes. falls through the pavement. this happened last month. a cab driver saw what happened, pulled over to help, climbed inside the hole. it was 20 feet deep.

emergency views eventually were able to pull them both out. the girl visibly shaken alive and not terribly hurt. authorities say water erode the ground under the sidewalk causing it to become unstable. >> that's scary. >> that is incredible, isn't it? >> surprise. 20 feet, that's like two stories. you fall two stories? wow, what's going on? what's the story with our weather? >> the story in our weather pattern is this. we've had an unbelievably warm march, and then a very warm first two weeks of april. the last two weeks of april, however, been on the cool side. >> wintery -- >> we're not going to go back to the wintery just yet, but i think we're going to go back to cooler weather and get ready for the umbrellas. we've seen a very dry start to the year, the next week or so i think seems a little unsettled. we had a lot of rain over the last couple of daysment and looks like there could be more rain in the future. and again, maybe a lot more of it. temperatures high today, 64

degrees. we saw plenty of sunshine early in the day, but the clouds have rolled back in now. low this morning, 42 degrees, a very chilly start. most of you in the 30s. today the third day in a row below average. that is only the second time that has happened since the beginning of february. we've been much above average. once again third day in a row above average. i don't think we'll stay there again tomorrow. but the high temperature tomorrow should stay below that average temperature. 61 degrees, the high temperature, the temperature out there right now. dew point is 18. so a very dry atmosphere with a humidity of 19%. winds right now gusting over 20 miles an hour. we do have a few showers out there. but once again with this dry atmosphere, i doubt much of that is hitting the ground. 57 degrees in gaithersburg, leesburg, fredericksburg, and 61 in la plata. again, we're talking about a cool night tonight, make sure you have that jacket if not the coat as you step out and about this evening. storm 4 radar showing a few of

those showers lining up along the potomac between virginia and maryland and back in towards northern faulkner county. if anything is reaching the ground here, it'd be very light sprinkles. that's about it. maybe just enough to get those windshield wipers going. but once again, most of us will stay on the dry side overnight tonight. here's what's going on, we saw the sun early but then that area of low pressure brought back another little piece of energy right across our area. that's why we're seeing the clouds build back up. i do think overnight tonight we'll see clearing skies. by tomorrow morning, we'll see more sunshine as the sun makes its way up there in the 6:00 hour. back to the west, very interesting weather pattern. we've seen incredible warmth along the east coast for much of the first half of the year, but now it's back to the west, 85 in billings, 87 in denver, las vegas was 99 yesterday. and death valley hit 113. the warmest april temperature ever all because of the jet stream. huge ridge out west and that huge trough in the east. the high today, billings, montana, 85 degrees.

miami, florida, 76 degrees. it is warmer in montana than it is way down to the south in miami. we are going to get some of this warmth to move towards the east, but it's not going to be able to move to the north. i don't expect temperatures to be above average for about the next week to maybe next week and a half. don't expect this warm weather to return any time soon. cool weather today with the cloud kor that we're seeing now will be partly sunny for most of the day tomorrow and rather nice on our wednesday and coming into thursday. and look at this rain, maybe some strong thunderstorms here on thursday. as the storm system moves on by thursday could be a fairly wet afternoon. now, temperatures, next couple of days, high of 70 degrees on your thursday if we can get there, we'll see a good chance of rain on thursday, high of 63 on friday, 62 on saturday, and right now, sunday, looking wet with a high of only 60 degrees. some areas could stay in the 50s if this thing kind of comes together the way i think it might. so maybe two weekends in a row

3 of the 5 people who died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in prince georges county today were related. >> all five had connections here and abroad. erica gonzalez spoke with the victims' family and friends today in oxen hill. >> reporter: family and friends of the five victims are mourning the sudden loss of their loved ones all from el salvador. they were found dead this morning in this oxen hill home on shelby drive from what police say were high levels of carbon

monoxide. >> the police department has a spanish-speaking investigator if not on the scene, on the way. >> reporter: marvin chavez tells me he went by his dad and step mom's home this morning. he went in and found them all lifeless. police say it was carbon monoxide poisoning. marvin says he went by his dad and step mom's house this morning and when no one answered, he went in and found them all dead. marvin tells me he had just seen his dad oscar chavez last night. he took this picture of him with his granddaughter. she was heartbroken. she says her mother sonia who was married to oscar worked in the bakery at a local giant. she tells me her 54-year-old mother had just had back surgery. she says the other woman found dead in the home was her mother's sister nora, 57 years old who had come from out of town to help take care of her. the other two were renters.

francisco, 33, and nelson, 44. she was inconsolable when she p found out about her brother-in-law's death. she says he worked at a local car wash to send money home to his wife and their two kids. he was also the praise and worship leader for the oxen hill church. the church pastor came by and told me he was there to support the family and call any of their loved ones back in el salvador. he tells me they take comfort in knowing the five are with god. many in this tight-knit church community say they never could've seen this coming. family members tell me church services will likely be held within the next couple of days. and then after that, the victims' bodies will likely be sent back to el salvador. in oxen hill, maryland, news 4.

singer and actress jennifer hudson back in a chicago courtroom today attending the trial of her former brother-in-law. he's accused of killing three members of her family. today hudson bowed her head and closed her eyes as a police officer on the witness stand described how he found the victims. hudson testified at that trial yesterday. the man behind arizona's controversial immigration law was on capitol hill today testifying. former state senator russell pierce says it's important to defend our border against a national crisis. opponents say the law keeps crime victims from coming forward. that law requires police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is illegal and to detain them until they can show proof of citizenship or a green card. the occupy wall street movement is alive and well and protesting outside a wells fargo shareholders meeting in san francisco today. protesters said they wanted the bank to address issues such as home foreclosures and corporate

taxes. sop even bought wells fargo stock so they could get into that meeting. but police blocked their entrance. the shareholders had to show stock certificate to be let inside. the community activist from falls church, virginia, is on trial now for allegedly molesting his daughter's friends at two slumber parties at his house last year. today, one of the girls who accused michael gardner of abusing her was the first to take the witness stand. >> reporter: michael gardner leaving court after listening to hours of testimony from one of three young girls he's charged with sexually molesting. gardner is a well-known falls church community activist, his wife a city councilwoman and former mayor there. inside the courtroom, the 10-year-old girl wore sparkly sunglasses as she testified. so tiny, her face could barely be seen over the top of the witness stand. but as prosecutor nicole whitman

questioned her, she stood up and confidently pointed to gardner as the man who touched what she calls her girl parts. the fifth grader says she was sleeping in the basement with six other girls when she was awakened. prosecutor whitman. why did you wake up? answered the child. i heard somebody opening my sleeping bag. i looked up to see who it was, and i saw mr. gardner. she went on to say, then he held up the waistband of my pants and underwear and touched my girl parts. the child testified she then saw gardner walk over to another girl before returning to touch her again. that morning, she confided in another young guest because "her girl parts hurt." that girl also said she'd been touched. both girls told their parents when they were picked up later and police were called. but in two hours of cross-examination, defense attorneys underscored inski inconsistencies in the girl's version of events. asked gardener's lawyer, didn't

you tell detective richardson, it was too dark to see who it was? the child replied, i don't remember. showed her a transcript of the earlier statement. what did you tell detective richardson on june 18th? the girl, that he was tall and he was a boy. witness testimony is key to this case. they will also present critical dna evidence showing michael gardner's dna was found on the pajamas and underwear of the little girl who testified today. news 4. it's three months in jail for the man who stabbed brandon banks as they were fighting outside a nightclub in washington in northwest. it was outside the club called the park and it was last february. jason shorter says he fought with banks and a friend and stabbed both men with a pocket knife. banks suffered a collapsed lung and had to stay in the hospital. dozens of chocolate bars and juice boxes were seized at dulles airport because they had

an extra ingredient that was illegal. customs and border protection found more than 4 pounds of cocaine inside a woman's luggage on sunday night. they say she is a legitimate courier from guatemala. the estimated street value of the cocaine at $130,000. people who have witnessed crimes have a new way to report them anonymously. it's a new smartphone app called pipsubmit. the app uses gps to connect to the nearest crime office program or nearest agency. and they can include photos and videos with their tips. tip submit is available for iphones and androids. more cameras now will be watching drivers in montgomery county. ten portable speed cameras and 20 new red light cameras will hit county streets before the end of next year. this -- pardon me, according to the "washington examiner." the county made nearly $10 million from tickets last year.

police expect to announce the new speed and red light camera locations in the coming weeks. the anacostia river got a little more accessible today with a new walkway bridge along the river front. vincent gray and other leaders opening it the river walk trail bridge. it runs to the 11th street bridge on the north side of the river. gray says this is part of an ongoing initiative to revitalize the anacostia river front. he says that trail will improve parkland, water front access and create economic development. the trail serves as the backbone of the anacostia water front and will connect 16 neighborhoods to one another and the anacostia river. >> when it's completed, this will run from the national mall. you can pick it up at the tidal basin and it'll take you to other trails in maryland and virginia. 20 miles of track and it should be completed some time in 2014. well, unemployment among

america's service members is above the national average. those married to military men and women face an even bigger battle. christine watrel reports, dozens showed up at a fair geared toward military spouses. >> nice to meet you. >> nice to meet you, as well. >> military friendly employers are extending a helping hand, no the just to service members, but spouses, as well. this job fair comes as welcome relief. >> it's been difficult. i put my career on hold many times because we've been moving. >> reporter: she's not alone, a typical spouse moves in eight times while supporting a service member's career. reentering the workforce can be tough. >> when you've been out for a while, haven't been working, you forget how to interview. you forget what a resume is supposed to look like. >> reporter: that's why the military officers association of america committed to biannual job fairs matching veterans and their spouses to employers

well, paris is tough to maneuver and figure out where you're going and reading those signs. just ask this man who thought he was parking in a parking garage and accidentally drove down the steps of a metro station. he managed to stop before getting to the train, fortunately for him. and he didn't hit anybody. so it was actually a good day. police were able to pull his car out and they didn't damage it in the process. so the driver who was 26 said, hey, it's not all my fault. there was a sign for a garage above the station and, you know, he's human. a worker at a nearby restaurant said, you know, another driver made that same mistake a few years ago. so -- well, the airline is giving you a chance to pick your seat mate and you can do it through social media. it started what it calls its meet and seat program. gives passengers the chance to

weed through potential seat mates by looking through facebook and linkedin. you'll be able to see who was on your flight and opt to sit next to someone with some common interests. the program is available on several international flights. those long flights to and from amsterdam. if you're interested, klm royal dutch airline does fly out of dulles. >> so there. a really cool dog, dog's nail is axle goes everywhere that hutton goes, including work. his work is to install and repair roofs. and axle, the dog, goes with him. and while axle has no problem climbing up the ladder to get on to the roof, he's not quite so good climbing down. >> oh -- >> he puts him over his shoulder. they've been doing this since axle was 7 weeks old. he weighed a lot less when he was 7 weeks old. that's a man who never has to go to the gym. as long as he's got axle.
