vicious attack in d.c. are dead. one of the dogs was apparently shot while going after a police officer. good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim hanley. those dogs, we're told, were found and euthanized in prince george's county. it's the end to a horrifying ordeal caught on camera. we must warn you some may find this video disturbing. last friday night the dogs attacked children here on queen street in northwest washington. one of the dogs even jumped on the car trying to get at the kids. at one point neighbors came out and beat the dogs away. today police say they believe someone drove those dogs to maryland. people who witnessed the attack had been living in fear that the dogs would come back. news 4's darcy spencer visited the neighborhood tonight. she'll have much more in a live report at news 4 at 5:00.

a major development in the presidential race. newt gingrich is suspending his campaign. nbc news learned he'll make the official announcement here in washington next tuesday. a senior campaign source tells nbc that gingrich decided to end his campaign after a four-hour meeting with advisors. the former speaker of the house is expected to endorse mitt romney's campaign. gingrich's decision appeared all but inevitable after romney's strong sweep last night of the five nominating contests, in new york, pennsylvania, connecticut, rhode island and delaware. >> you have to be honest about what's happening in the real world as opposed to what's happening. governor romney had a very good day yesterday. >> gingrich added that he believes it's clear that romney will ultimately be the nominee for the republican party. he said he would do everything he could to help romney win in the fall. the trial of the five men accused of the south carolina street shootings -- south

capitol street is officially in the hands of the jury. the defendants are accused of killing five people and wounding several others in a series of related attacks back in march of 2010. prosecutors say it all began over a missing fake diamond bracelet. the jury is expected to deliberate until 5:00 tonight. firefighters and paramedics are going door-to-door in prince george's county checking carbon monoxide detectors trying to prevent another tragedy after five people were over come by fumes in their oxon hill home yesterday. those five died. news 4's melissa mollet has more on the outreach effort. >> reporter: prince george's county firefighters walking the neighborhood where five people died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning tuesday warning residents about the gas, answering questions, handing out information sheets in spanish

and english and checking smoe detectors. >> is it all right if we come in and check them? >> yes. >> reporter: family and friends mourned outside the house tuesday and more family arrived early wednesday morning. all five victims were from el salvador. they were found outside the house in the 700 block of shelby drive, a married couple, the woman's sister and two representers lived here. fire officials say levels inside the home were 100 times the acceptable limit and a broken exhaust pipe on the furnace might be to blame. the company is now donating 200 carbon monoxide detectors to the county for them to hand out as needed. >> coming around to check to make sure your furnace is okay, yes, i think they should after that. that was tragic. >> reporter: this is not the first time in the south lawn neighborhood. they've been on four other calls in recent months but say that's not uncommon when you're dealing with older homes. the fire department says everyone should have a carbon monoxide detector. >> i didn't sleep very well last

night. i don't think any of the people that were here that responded slept very well last night. it is troubling any time we lose a resident to any type of fire or in this case hazardous materials type of situation. but in the end, this is what we do and we're here today to try and avert another one. >> reporter: the gas can be generated by any appliance that burns coal, wood, charcoal, gas or propane. firefighters say installing a detector is the only way to sense the presence of the odorless, colorless gas. but they also recommend annual furnace and chimney inspections. carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are similar to symptoms of the flu. >> it's a sad situation, really sad. >> reporter: if you have a concern about your home, firefighters here in prince george's county say that will come to your neighborhood. all you have to do is call the number on the screen, 301-864-safe. in the meantime, the fire chief here says he wants legislation

that would require carbon monoxide detectors in all oxon county homes. there is an effort underway to help the victims' families pay for the funerals. we'll have more on that on news 4 at 5:00. the man accused of killing jennifer hudson's family appeared to break down and cry at his trial in chicago today. prosecutors showed graphic images of the youngest victim, hudson's 7-year-old jeff few. today was the first time william balfour showed any emotion. balfour pleaded not guilty to first degree murder in the direct of hudson's mother, brother and nephew. hudson was not in the courtroom when prosecutors showed the pictures. for a third day today, jurors in the neds trial are hearing testimony from andrew young. he's a former aide and friend of the one-time presidential candidate. he's also a key witness for the prosecution who are trying to

prove that edwards illegally used campaign funds to hide an affair. jay gray is outside in greensboro, north carolina, with the latest. >> reporter: for 2 1/2 days andrew young described at times an intricate detail, a plan implemented by jerry edwards to hide his his tres rielle hunter from his wife and the public during his run for the white house. today the defense got their shot at the state's star witness in the high-profile case. >> there's no question that there are opportunities for the defense to impeach andrew young's credibility. >> reporter: but they will have to tread lightly after several comments during the first two days of testimony that could actually help the defense. young has said that money from rich el bunny melon was given to edwards for his personal use and she expected nothing in return. he also indicated that edwards didn't believe he was doing anything wrong. >> every time andrew young questioned jerry edwards about the lawfulness of it. he said i've thought about it, i've looked into it, it's

perfectly okay. >> for the first time in the trial, andrew wife's young sherry was seen walking into the courthouse. she's been a central figure in his testimony. >> andrew young made it clear in his direct testimony that sherry young, his wife, was in charge of the young family finances. >> reporter: finances that he says were funneled to hunter through their family bank account, something sherry young could be asked to explain in more detail as a potential witness in this case. sherry young could be the next witness for the prosecution, though most believe the defense still has at least a day's worth of questions left for her husband during cross examination. andrew young testified today his relationship with edwards began to crumble around the time edwards dropped out of the '08 presidential campaign and rielle hunter gave birth. he said he got tired of living with hunter and pretending he was the father. turning to the weather which

homeland security secretary janet napolitano was questioned on the investigation. nbc's brian mooar has more on the developments. >> reporter: homeland security chief janet napolitano tells congress president obama's safety was not compromised when members of his secret service and military advance detail partied with prostitutes in colombia. >> the first question i posed was was there any breach to the president's security. the answer was no. >> she said there could have been a risk. eight secret service members are out. one lost his security clearance. three more fis administrative punishme punishment. >> the likelihood this was the first and only time that such behavior occurred, do you think that's great or not so great? >> reporter: napolitano says investigators have already examined almost 14,000 trips and found no similar misconduct. senators are alarmed by this quote from an agent in "the

actions should not detract from what the rest of the agents do. we all look much the same on the inside. but new research indicates race and ethnicity matter when it comes to managing diseases. dr. jackie is here to explain this. this is an intriguing topic. what do race and ethnicity have to do with medicine? >> an awful lot. just to clear this up. as doctors we really don't look at race which is a man-made sociology term that has to do with looking at people's facial features and trying to group them together. what we look at is genetics. we look at where people come from and their share a common bunch of genes. >> let's talk about how race matters for asthma patients, starting with a medication you prescribe all the time, albuterol. >> it's used as a rescue medication. what's known about this is if you inherit a particular gene from both your mother and father and you get this, you will actually use albuterol and your

asthma will get worse. that gene type is more common in african-americans. so if you're using a rescue medication and your asthma gets worse, it could be due to your genetics. >> so the medication can actually make them sicker. >> make them sicker. this is why you really need to know your family history and where you come from. >> what about another drug, ceravent. >> it's a common medication used in add veer which is a maintenance asthma medication. what was seen in those medications is there was an increased rate of death and those deaths were more commonly seen in african-americans. not in africans, but african-americans. the gene pool that makes up african-americans. >> what have they discovered about codeine and hypertension drugs. >> these two medications have to do with the way the genes play with the medications. in codeine, if you don't have a certain gene, you can't actually get any benefit from the codeine. that gene sadly is more common in whites and in a particular type of high blood pressure

medication, if you don't have the gene to make the drug work, the drug is not going to work and that's more common in blacks particularly with a type of high blood pressure medicine called an ace inhibitor. >> the same phenomenon applies to testing, not just administration, but testing. >> whenever we take care of a patient, we have to be able to establish a baseline. what i do, you want to be able to know what's their baseline lung function. if i compare an asian patient to a caucasian patient and they're the same height and the same age, that asian patient is going to have smaller lunges than that caucasian patient. i need to know that ahead of time so i don't end up overtreating that patient trying to get them to a number unrealistic for their gene type. >> is it all about genes? are there other factors like environment. >> this is the question i get asked every day. parents will ask me, we've come from another country halfway

across the globe. when we arrived here in our family history we never had anybody with allergy or asthma. how did this happen that we certainly have a child with a food allergy or asthma. what commonly the explanation is something called the hygiene hypothesis which is that the child got exposed to -- get not get exposed to lots of infections that may have been back in the old country and that instead here their gene type was able to actually express itself. the allergy gene came out. that gene was always there. it was always in the family. nobody ever noticed it because the immune system was too busy slugging it out against really big diseases like malaria or tuberculosis. so the gene was always there. now it's being manifested here. >> fascinating. thank you. >> people need to realize you need to know your family history, where you come from. and make sure your doctor recognizes it. when we come right back,

we shouldn't have put our umbrellas away. >> that's right. the morning rush tomorrow is looking wet. outside right now we only have a few clouds out there. temperatures, plenty mild. we're at 70 degrees right now with a wind that's gusting to 24 miles per hour. so it has been a breezy afternoon for us. take a look at the winds throughout the area right now. gusting anywhere from 20 to about 24 miles per hour. lease berg, d.c., gusting do 20 miles per hour at pax river. our storm 4 radar is dry throughout this area. you don't have to go too far over into areas of west virginia, around parkersburg, around charleston. the leading edge of some showers that will be moving in tomorrow with a warm front. so for 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. this

evening, just some clouds around the area. clouds will be on the increase. temperatures not too bad, rather mild, in fact. upper 50s by 11:00 p.m. tomorrow morning low to mid 50s throughout the area with again showers, but could be some pockets coming up around 9:00, 10:00 a.m. of moderate, perhaps even heavy rain. there is the possibility of thunder tomorrow. there's the warm front. columbus, ohio, charleston, west virginia, down toward roanoke, with the warm front it means warm air and temperatures tomorrow that will be even higher. take a look at the timeline behind me. here is 3:00 a.m. thursday, wind chester, culpepper, fredricksburg getting showers. 8:00 a.m. pockets of moderate rain showing up, maybe a little thunder down through the south. i think a better chance of us getting the thunderstorms as we get the break around midday. with that break in the first batch of rain moving through with the warm front, we'll have the cold front approaching the area.

you can see pockets of more moderate and heavy rain breaking out with the thunderstorms probably after, i think 7:00 p.m. and lasting up until about 11:00 p.m. or midnight as that front pushes east. these numbers that you're looking at, this is the rainfall amounts that we could get through out the area. we got good rain with the last system. i think this next system will deliver about a quarter to maybe just around an inch of rain in some of the higher spots west, but generally between a quarter and about a third of an inch of rain coming up with this next weather system that will be, again, the rain ending sometime late tomorrow. for this evening, a few clouds, a nice evening. 57 to 63 degrees. we'll be breezy. tomorrow morning, soggy morning rush, 46 to 54 degrees. get that umbrella for the morning rush and keep it handy i think even for the evening rush. temperatures though will be mild. so you're just going to need a rain jacket for tomorrow. not any heavy coat. we'll see highs in the mid 60s for fridays with sunshine. take a look at the weekend because that's when we'll have

welcome back everybody at 4:30. i'm jim hanley. >> i'm pat lawson muse. breaking news this hour, the two dogs caught on surveillance video in this vicious attack in northeast washington on friday are now dead. police believe somebody drove the dogs from d.c. to shef lee, maryland and let them go. one of the dogs was shot after trying to attack a police officer. both dogs were euthanized. newt gingrich is suspending his campaign. nbc news has learned he will make the official announcement

parents in portugal. >> nbc's tazeen ahmad has more on efforts to reopen the case. >> reporter: a new age progression image of madeleine mccann as she would be age 9 has been reloosed to day. it was prepared in close collaboration with the mccanns and an expert in human identification and forensic art. the mccanns are said to be pleased with it, especially because it reflects the family resemblance. >> today why we're here is specifically to appeal for information around her being alive. >> reporter: british police also said today they have 195 new leads they're now investigating. they say they are bringing together the work carried out by themselves, the portuguese police and the work of the mccans' private investigators. this means working through 40,000 items including 100,000 documents with a 37-strong team of police staff. the key aim is to persuade the portuguese police to reopen the case and get some closure on

madeleine mccann's disappearance. tazeen ahmad, nbc news london. british police say there's been no reliable indication of what may have happened to the little girl despite reported sightings from all around the world. a high school in western tennessee last weekend. one student couldn't get in to the prom because of the dress she was wearing. it wasn't too short, wasn't too revealing. it resembled the confederate flag. she designed the girl herself. school officials told her it was offensive and unappropriate. edwards and some of her classmates disagree. >> it was wasn't done to offend anybody. >> i don't see the point of not letting somebody in the prom over that. it's their one and only prom. >> other people wear stuff to

school every day that has that symbol on it. they don't get kicked out of school. >> it was heritage, not hate. she didn't go in to make nobody upset. >> edwards says the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. last year she wore a camouflage dress to the prom. they were doing a double take in detroit. rush hour traffic came to a standstill in the city when drivers spotted one man jogging down the street. check it out. he was buck naked as they say. a driver snapped this photo. then police spotted him. the man took off running to get away from the officers. police say the man was high on meth. they had to use a taser to get him to stop, then they covered him up with a sheet until an ambulance showed up. one driver said the naked runner is a lesson to stay away from drugs. >> you hope you never see another naked guy running. >> i hope not. >> some things you just don't need to see. >> i just hope i stay clean. >> a good lesson. okay. the ambulance took the man to

motherhood apparently agrees with beyonce. "people" magazine just named her the world's most beautiful woman. the 16-time grammy winner and actress is described as a style and beauty icon. beyonce told the magazine she feels more beautiful than ever since she's given birth. she adds that she never felt she had such a purpose on this earth. her little daughter blue ivy with husband jay-z was born in january. next month she'll perform in her first concert since giving birth. imagine getting to meet the president of the united states. >> big deal indeed. the pressure is on. now imagine getting to meet the president and accidentally spilling yogurt on him.

examined nadya suleman's home on tuesday. they say they received a phone call from someone claiming her 14 children were living in filth. tmz says the caller was suleman's hair stylist. she became known as the octomom after giving birth to eight babies back in '09. turning to the weather again, it's back. >> driving in to work, i could see the car -- my car included, coated with a thin film of pollen again. so that's what's back. we'll put the cab bash on it. we've got rain that's going to be moving in. let's talk about it. the pollen count has gone up from today. it's 175 grains per cubic meter. that is tree pollen making up more than a hundred grains of that count that you see there. sycamore is the next highest on the list. as far as temperatures, in the mid 60s today. mid 70s for tomorrow.
