11:00 am
good morning, everyone, and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison, it's thursday, april 26, 2012. and we begin with new information in a wrong-way krach involving three cars in prince george's county. chopper 4 flew over the scene this morning, and we learned that the driver going the wrong way, experienced a medical emergency. it happened in the middle of the morning rush in the southbound lanes of route 4, near route 301 in upper marlboro, news4's megan mcgrath is line on the scene with the investigation.
11:01 am
>> reporter: this happened right around rush hour at the start this morning. 5:30 in the morning and it really snarled traffic for quite a long time. take a look at the video, you can see how violent the crash was, the jeep that was involved is absolutely mangled and ended up on its roof. investigators say the jeep was driving the wrong way on route 4, that they were traveling north on the southbound side. it had been driving the wrong way for miles. police were first made aware of the situation, anne arundel county police, were trying to catch up with the driver. but they just didn't get him in time and that's when the wreck happened. now investigators say that the jeep hit a commercial van, then lost control, and then slammed head-on into a pick-up truck. now why was the jeep going the wrong way? well the driver, who is a diabetic, was apparently having a medical emergency. >> medical personnel said that he had very low blood sugar. he was a diabetic. so he was out of it, didn't know what was going on, disoriented.
11:02 am
>> didn't know he was driving the wrong way? >> he didn't know he was driving the wrong way. spoke to him in the hospital, he doesn't recall anything from the accident. >> reporter: the driver and the passenger in the pickup truck are both volunteer firefighters with ladder company, 37 and they're lucky. the truck that they were in had reinforced bumper rails, and a snowplow attachment on the front and that really helped deflect the jeep and lessen the impact of the head-on collision. four people were transported to the hospital. one by, one by chopper. all of them are going to be okay. we're told, despite all of the damage to those vehicles, everything is going to be okay. we're told they're conscious and they are talking. now there will be charges pending against the driver who was going in the wrong direction. but again, everybody is okay, i should mention that all of the roadways are open, all lanes are open and we're not seeing a traffic impact any longer. reporting live from the state police barrack. metro's board of directors

will vote on the system's first-ever unlimited monthly pass. the pass would allow riders with smart trip cards to ride any time of day, to any location for $230 for the month. metro is also voting on a fare hike, fares are expected to go up 5% and parking fees up 25 cents. there would also be an additional $1 surcharge for nonsmart trip card users. if the plan is approved, the changes will take place on july 1st. two metro employees are on paid administrative leave this morning followed this week's train derailment. that according to the "washington post." the report in the paper did not indicate what exactly led to the derailment. on tuesday night, a franconia springfieldbound train derailed as it tried to leave the rosalyn station. no one was hurt, but the derailment caused significant delays. turning to the weather, and a gray and rainy day out there so far, storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast for midday.

and we now know the two dogs that attacked kids and injured one man in northeast washington will not hurt anyone else. the dogs have been euthanized. surveillance video captured the attack on queen street friday night. a police officer found the dogs four miles away in prince george's county early saturday morning. police believe someone dropped those dogs off in shelfly. the officers shot one of the dogs when the dog tried to attack him. animal control euthanized both of those dogs, because both suffered injuries when neighbors had to beat the animals to get them away from the teens. police are still looking for the owners of those dogs. today, a jury will resume deliberations in the south capital street shootings trial. five men are on trial for killing five people and injuring nine others in a series of shootings in march of 2010. prosecutors say the shootings started all because of a stolen fake diamond bracelet. the jury heard testimony from more than 100 witnesses and saw more than 1,000 pieces of evidence in this case.

they deliberated for about an hour yesterday before heading home. today montgomery county police are holding a crash course in pedestrian accidents, these organized demonstrations help officers figure out what most likely happens before they even get to the scene. news4's tracee wilkins explains. >> reporter: minutes have passed, by the time officer arrive to a scene after pedestrian has been struck bay vehicle. and then the work begins to either investigate the crash or try and save the life of the victim. so today, montgomery county police put together a demonstration showing maryland officers what they don't see. impact. the striking car in this demonstration was only going 44 miles per hour. here's the impact from another angle. the watermelon they used for the mannequin's head explodes. its body parts go everywhere. the car barely has a dent. >> when a car hits a pedestrian,
11:08 am
the car wins every time. and there's very little evidence left behind the pedestrian. >> in this police training class held by montgomery county police, officers from prince george's county and other maryland municipalities have a chance to see what happens when a pedestrian is struck at speeds ranging from 40 miles per hour, to top speed. >> they will be able to study the physics involved. and apply it so that when they come out to the scene, they can relate to what they experienced to the evidence that is found. >> in another demonstration, the car hits a mannequin on a bike. as soon as the crash happened, the officers went to the exact location where the car struck the bike. as you can see, there's not much evidence there. but they already have the tape out measuring and just a few yards away, you see the car stopped there, and the bike that it hit? still under it. >> everybody has a responsibility when they're on the road to look out for each
11:09 am
other. because regardless if you're at fault or not, you lose in this situation. >> reporter: last year in montgomery county alone, there were 399 pedestrian accidents, 11 of those accidents were fatalities, nine of them were at the fault of the pedestrian. montgomery county police are hoping that demonstrations like this one will not only prepare their officers for investigating these crashes, but will perhaps inform the public on how to avoid them. in montgomery county, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. would hospitals be ready if a major catastrophe struck your area? montgomery county is finding out right now. it's holding a mass casualty drill today. county leaders want to test the response at maryland hospitals, the drill will not impact normal operations at county hospitals, it's going on as we speak and runs until 3:00 this afternoon. you may notice a lot of military helicopters flying overhead. that's just part of the exercise. well, it hasn't happened much in the past couple of years, but this morning, caps fans have a
